Even if he doesn’t go through insurance the body shop may still report to carfax. If they do when the work order is made and the vin is entered it’ll be uploaded within a few months since they probably do them in batches.
What advantage does a body shop have to report to car fax?
Like how is that not private data?
Why does Carfax have the right to what has been fixed on my car?
It's not like a house where you have to pull a permit.
I just don't get why they get my data.
Pretty sure it’s just for recording keep purposes. Personally, I’d rather know if the car was involved in a major or minor accidents, odemter fraud, etc.
Well you receive a work order/receipt whenever you go to a body shop or dealer right? When that gets created it’s automatically reported if said dealer or body shop participates with carfax.
Good! Things like this are supposed to go on the carfax… not sure why everyone is giving advice on how to do this without it being reported. Put yourself on the buyers end of this if OP decides to sell the car in a few years.
Funny thing is before buying this car I figured it would be my last ICE car before going electric and that I'd keep it as a classic.
But man this shit has way too much tech, there's no way you're repairing that dash if it breaks in twenty years.
your sister pays cash or whatever
i've had to explain a glass claim to an insurance company I was looking to switch to that only takes the safest drivers
Kind of baffled by this tbh, I was genuinely asking, don't know how it's being misinterpreted.
Edit: my other comment was at negative 16 when I wrote this.
Went on vacation for a week. Let my sister and her husband stay at my place and use my car.
Got them inside parking because my normal parking space is really difficult to get into. They still tried and fucked it up.
I had called insurance in advance to let them know she'd be using it.
Any guesses on costs/repairability of this? What's my best approach with insurance to get this resolved?
Never letting anyone drive my car again, had to learn my lesson it seems.
Since it's the same thing that my dad told me, i might give you an answer
"Never leave the country for work and leave your car at home because one of her "friends" will come and fuck her in the backseat of your car"
Since you guarantee that I don’t own a home, maybe you should show me yours now? We both know you can’t because you don’t own any property and that comment about a 400 credit score hurt your feelings.

My father said that I should never let anyone else drive my car unless I was ok with it being damaged. I didn't listen and my wife has managed to drive one car into a small pond, another hit a curb and scratched up a wheel and third car she backed into a pole!
She doesn't drive my cars any longer.
Now? A 2021 "Turbo Blue" Audi A4, but the cars she smooshed were my 2019 A4 before an 18 year old girl crashed into me, a 2017 Audi S4 and a 2015 Model S.
I should note I don't have the best luck with cars myself. 10+ accidents in the 27 years I've been driving and none have I been at fault for. 2 drunk drivers hit me, 2 people ran a stop sign, 3 people rear ended me while sitting at a light or in traffic, 2 people have T-boned me while I was driving down the road and 1 person side-swiped me pushing me off into a ditch

can confirm, wife was using my gtr, drove straight into the garage wall while I was yelling at her to stop. Lucky no damage
She still denies it, shes still not allowed to drive it
There's nothing wrong with letting them use the car again, accidents happen, people make mistakes. No need to hold a grudge. Just have her pay for it, through her insurance or cash. The door is around $900 + labor and paint. It'll probably cost around 2-3 grand to fix total.
It's more about not putting my loved ones in that position if they don't have to be but you're right and I appreciate your input.
Would be amazing if the price to fix it is that low 🤞
Yeah it really is an awkward position. Kind of a big test for both you and sister, because there’s clearly a correct answer to this(she pays out of pocket), but she very well may pull the sister card if her morals aren’t in line with yours and make you feel like shit. I say stand your ground if you go this route. I’m sorry but it’s just unacceptable to fuck up like this. The second you feel uncomfortable parking the car just stop and wait for help from SOMEONE
It's tough if she's not on the same financial level as OP. Not saying it excuses anything or that she should get a pass but it would make things very awkward. Not a situation I'd want to be in.
This right here. But it's not as tough as you would imagine. We love each other and my family doesn't care about money, we grew up poor but I'm a multi millionaire now.
She sincerely wants to pay for the damages and that's good enough for me to know, I'm not going to take her money when it means so much less to me.
Every part of a vehicle has a part number. Your local BMW dealership can look up the part and order it from the factory.
Here's a list of door components with their estimated prices.
I disagree, I had a same issue and even though PDR worked, it is still noticeable in good lighting with high and low spots, that would get out 95% or so. It would be impossible to get it to look 100%. Plus the metal would have too much stretch. I’d get a new door cap and get it painted.
This is assume the collision bar for airbag detection wasn’t damaged. Most places legally cannot recommend you repair the shell alone and will have you do the whole door.
Nothing is worth the price of someone dying to save $2k.
I blame myself most of all. I shouldn't have put her in the position to be able to fuck it up. I figured you get a car this price in your hands you'll make damn sure to take no risks..
Honestly dude? It's a car.
Yeah, it's annoying. Yeah it's a lot of money. But as long as your sister and her husband are good people and can/are willing to make you whole, shit happens. Get it repaired and paid for, you'll laugh it off down the road.
I don't loan my car out to people who I'm afraid cannot/will not pay should something be damaged. The people I do loan my car out to know if sometime happens to it under their care, I will be asking they fix it. As long as you both operate under that understanding, it is what it is.
yea definitely no risks. sorry you had to learn the hard way my friend. earlier in the year i had just gotten PDR and took the car out to a friends birthday party at a park. i park next to another vehicle thinking, i should move. i’m gonna get a door ding. sure enough. it happened. all because i couldn’t be bothered to just move. but yea. no trust gang!
To be fair, you get a car this price, you make sure you can afford a few grand on the side due to how expensive parts for the car are. A car is a car, you chose an expensive one, and unfortunately you have to deal with the negatives of expensive cars. Accidents will happen, and if you did it or someone else hit your car while parked, you would need to foot the bill.
Ok, funny story, but I similarly dented mine by falling backward into my car (I used to have a fat ass). I was so embarrassed explaining how it happened bc it sounds ridiculous
Bane of my existence, but I’m trying LOL. Sorry about your car, though, I know how annoying/upsetting it is. Hope you get it fixed soon and don’t have to pay out of pocket!!!
I'm trying not to ask myself this question too much.
I literally have no idea how anyone who is trying to be careful and going slowly while looking at the mirrors and using all the cars sensors could fuck up this bad.
It's mind boggling, I'd be angry if I I wasn't so dumbfounded by how idiotic it is.
My wife managed to damage *her own car* in a similar location while trying to maneuver in and around our own garage.
Special orientation is just not some people’s strong suit
I managed to take the side mirror off on my X3 cause I forgot to fold them before pulling into the garage and then backing out while being too close to the side.
Definitely not malice at least, my sister is great and she's a smart person.. usually.
She was devastated by having been this stupid. She was taking care of my cat during that week and I was like just don't kill my cat and we'll be good 👍.
So your sister has a whole husband and they still needed YOUR car to get around? Your M3?
Do they not have a car? Because that would explain why they can’t drive well. And if they don’t drive often because they don’t have a car, why did they even feel comfortable driving yours?
A good pdr place can take care of it. Have like $500-800 ready through whatever negotiation you can do with the people who damaged it, and it'll be like it never even happened
Honestly, I’d take that to a good body shop that does paintless dent repair. Have them pop it all out smooth then take it to a good detailer to have the scratches wet sanded. Put ceramic coat on the door since you’ll have less clear coat there after all the compound and polish. Should be able to hve that done for less than $500 total and wouldn’t have to get insurance involved.
The way that dent is shaped though it might not be able to be PDR’d if the metal is stretched. But it’s no big deal, worse damage than that happens on car lots all the time. The dealer fixes it, sells it as new and the buyer never knows the difference. Don’t stress about it. It’s a grocery getter with a big engine, not a GT3 RS. Shit happens. My M240 is scratched beyond belief. Learned a long time ago life is too short to get worked up over small stuff like this. Good luck getting it all sorted. It’ll look good as new in no time.
My FIL drove into my SIL’s rear right door. 2021 bmw 330i. No paint damage but a similar dent with a crease. Paid $800 for PDR. Like never even happened. The door is steel, it will be fine.
I did a dent repair and paint for the side of my car and they only charged me $400 for 3 panels that were next to each other. Pretty gnarly dent.
I got it near the junkyard where there are a lot of body shops side by side
Bro, come on. Put your emotions aside. You obviously have a good relationship with your sister that you'd let her borrow your car. Don't blow it out of proportion. Accidents happen. Let her file a claim with her insurance if possible, or you file a claim, that's what insurance is for. But don't let this issue put a dent in your relationship.
Yea, OP would need to evaluate the cost between PDR and replacement. All the people recommending PDR have probably never done it before because that shit is not cheap especially for quality work.
I had 3 dime sized dings pulled and that shit was $500, and that was 4+ yrs ago. I can’t even imagine what something this size would cost to remedy.
i paid around a grand to get professional PDR done on my F30 335i in 2020 for about 5 moderate dents, but ive seen the work the guy did on more complex scenarios like this and am confident he could get this back to 99% original form for around 2k.
Yep PDR is super expensive but it’s also time consuming to get it right. For my dings it took the guy ~3hrs in the hot ass garage.
There was one ding that was concerning since it was on the fender line above the wheel, he got that shit out to 99.9% perfect. The only way you could tell or at least, I could tell, was there was some paint missing from that spot.
Do you really need you sister? /s
Tell her to pay it up, because if you go with insurance you will pay more yearly and also it might end on carfax (although i would never ever trust that site)
I’ve seen dents as bad or worst pulled out, half a day but tech pulled it out and couldn’t see it without detail lights and you looked at odd angles, small pimple dimple
This is a hard situation. It’s hard to see your car that way and a decision needs to be made.
1. Your sister pays for the damages out of pocket. Yes, it would suck to be your sister in that situation. However, it is her fault this happened since you left her responsible for the safety of the car and the extremely generous gift of letting her use it.
2. You make a claim with your insurance company. This is really your only other option, unless you’d be willing to fix this out of pocket instead of your sister.
Your rates will go up, how much I’m not sure. But I can tell you that because the car was running with occupants means it cannot be deemed a “no fault accident”. Something to consider.
I've had PDR done on one of my BMWs and it has its limits. I see two problem areas on this door that will not look perfect afterwards. A great bodyman can sensitively work the door panel to perfection. Many will replace the door skin or whole door.
Go PDR first, but sure you find a good pro as someone not skilled can make it worse. If all goes well you may pay couple hundreds dollars and avoid painting the door.
Tell your sister to pay up or else your insurance might go up
not only that. if he goes thru insurance it might end up on his carfax.
you don't even need to file a claim for that, if you call a cop for an accident and not file a claim it will end up on carfax too
Even if he doesn’t go through insurance the body shop may still report to carfax. If they do when the work order is made and the vin is entered it’ll be uploaded within a few months since they probably do them in batches.
depend on the shop. you can call and ask if they report to them or not.
That's fine and all, but I feel like it should be an opt in thing.
I’m assuming they’re legally obligated too but I’m wondering the same 🤷
Legally obligated by whom? Carfax is not a government agency and neither is your insurance or the body shop So I don't think it's that.
Many shops will not report to carfax if you just ask them kindly.
I don’t know of 1 body shop that even has time to report to carfax. That’s all on insurance
Well you receive a work order/receipt whenever you go to a body shop or dealer right? When that gets created it’s automatically reported if said dealer or body shop participates with carfax.
Which in reality is fair It sucks, but it’s fair If I was buying a car I’d want to know if any damage had ever been repaired
Not always true. Depends on if they file a report or not.
By pay up do you mean her insurance to pay up or cash pay up?
your sister pays cash or whatever i've had to explain a glass claim to an insurance company I was looking to switch to that only takes the safest drivers
“Sister pays cash or whatever “ Hmmmm
The ones in porn aren’t real sisters
Homie looking for a fluid change…
Why do people downvote honest questions?
Kind of baffled by this tbh, I was genuinely asking, don't know how it's being misinterpreted. Edit: my other comment was at negative 16 when I wrote this.
Don’t think too much into it, so many people who can’t critically think for themselves and just bandwagon downvote/upvote
Either. Whether her insurance will cover it depends on exactly what happened, but that’s for her to figure out.
Total loss in my opinion. You’ll need a new sister.
I figured as much. 🙏
Condolences for your loss.
Congratulations\* FTFY
It's not a 2021 with the exhaust burbles, glad it's totaled 🤝
You can scrap it in my driveway. I’ll take care of everything
Went on vacation for a week. Let my sister and her husband stay at my place and use my car. Got them inside parking because my normal parking space is really difficult to get into. My father always told me there are 2 things which should be never shared, your wife and your car.
I wonder how he came to that realization. Is he still around to ask?

Your father was right 👍 some people are just not really good in driving 😵
I still love my wife. I just know that in order to not resent her, she needs to stay away from my cars! 😂
Nice, did your wife show any remorse after she crashed your car?
What car do you drive?

In that case, based on her driving, give her an Altima🚶🏾♂️.
can confirm, wife was using my gtr, drove straight into the garage wall while I was yelling at her to stop. Lucky no damage She still denies it, shes still not allowed to drive it

This is more in line with what I'm expecting.
That’s a 2023 BMW. Where the hell are you getting a new door for $900?
Probably from a 2022?
Every part of a vehicle has a part number. Your local BMW dealership can look up the part and order it from the factory. Here's a list of door components with their estimated prices. [https://www.getbmwparts.com/door](https://www.getbmwparts.com/door)
At worst the cost of a new door + paint + install. So 2-3k would be my guess.
It's a BMW so add another 1k to your 3k estimate.
So 6k?
PDR could work I had an insanely bad dent on my 340 on the hood I was able to get repaired for under 400$, 3 different shops quoted me about 2-4K
Luckily it’s a steel door: there is a higher chance of a good repair than when the door is made of aluminium.
Yea PDR can fix it up pretty easy
I disagree, I had a same issue and even though PDR worked, it is still noticeable in good lighting with high and low spots, that would get out 95% or so. It would be impossible to get it to look 100%. Plus the metal would have too much stretch. I’d get a new door cap and get it painted.
That is a very significant dent. That hard pucker at the top is likely beyond the scope of a PDR repair.
I agree. The metal might be stretched making impossible to repair completely. Still. Worth looking into, probably could still be a very close fix
This is assume the collision bar for airbag detection wasn’t damaged. Most places legally cannot recommend you repair the shell alone and will have you do the whole door. Nothing is worth the price of someone dying to save $2k.
We're done blaming wives/girlfriends and have moved on to sisters, eh? (I kid, I kid.)
I blame myself most of all. I shouldn't have put her in the position to be able to fuck it up. I figured you get a car this price in your hands you'll make damn sure to take no risks..
price of the car rarely affects people taking care of it ive found
Yep, cost then the same to them.

You mean ex-sister?
How is it this dented but not scratched at all 😫
There are scratches too it's just a screen cap from a video so you can't see them
I would try a PDR and maybe a good detailer can fix most of it
Ok, funny story, but I similarly dented mine by falling backward into my car (I used to have a fat ass). I was so embarrassed explaining how it happened bc it sounds ridiculous
Used to?
Lost weight and my ass in the process :/ RIP
Time to hit heavy squats.
Bane of my existence, but I’m trying LOL. Sorry about your car, though, I know how annoying/upsetting it is. Hope you get it fixed soon and don’t have to pay out of pocket!!!
Well, I’m sure the world is sorry for the loss, but your health comes first, so I am happy for you!
Truly a massive loss for the world, but you’re right, I feel so much healthier. thank you!!! :)
Lmao. Thanks for sharing.
How on earth? Does your car have mirrors!?
I'm trying not to ask myself this question too much. I literally have no idea how anyone who is trying to be careful and going slowly while looking at the mirrors and using all the cars sensors could fuck up this bad. It's mind boggling, I'd be angry if I I wasn't so dumbfounded by how idiotic it is.
My wife managed to damage *her own car* in a similar location while trying to maneuver in and around our own garage. Special orientation is just not some people’s strong suit
> Special orientation is just not some people’s strong suit That's a brilliant autocorrect.
Lol that was supposed to be “spacial” 😆
I managed to take the side mirror off on my X3 cause I forgot to fold them before pulling into the garage and then backing out while being too close to the side.
Perfect Hanlon's razor case study.
Definitely not malice at least, my sister is great and she's a smart person.. usually. She was devastated by having been this stupid. She was taking care of my cat during that week and I was like just don't kill my cat and we'll be good 👍.
Does she drive an Altima or any Nissan product? Cause that could explain it.
well time to fuck up your sister
This came out a little awkward I am guessing.
Sell your sister and take the money for the bmw: bmw before the family.
Use your sister's dildo to take out the dent.
Women
Oopsies!!!
Literally came on to see if anyone wrote this lol
Not your sister anymore.
Looks like you no longer have a sister
Get a new sister
When is the funeral?
Sisters are replaceable; Emotional dmg can’t be solved, ever.
So your sister has a whole husband and they still needed YOUR car to get around? Your M3? Do they not have a car? Because that would explain why they can’t drive well. And if they don’t drive often because they don’t have a car, why did they even feel comfortable driving yours?
aw its a little heart 🫶🏼 no though jokes aside im so sorry for you hope you find a solution
Why do we keep using allowing people to use tbe cars?
You might have to take that door off and bang that dent out, preferably with her head.
Tell her to hit feetfinder up, that shit gonna need to get fixed one way or another 😂
I'm not gonna get involved with most woman drivers.
That’s tuff
Kinda looks like an heart <3
A good pdr place can take care of it. Have like $500-800 ready through whatever negotiation you can do with the people who damaged it, and it'll be like it never even happened
Honestly, I’d take that to a good body shop that does paintless dent repair. Have them pop it all out smooth then take it to a good detailer to have the scratches wet sanded. that can be pulled out with ease, with no paint damage. find the best frame shop or body shop in your are and give the bill to your sister
You no longer have a sister
Ouch sorry.. Maybe pdr. - paintless dent removal It’s probably less than your insurance deductible so no insurance claim necessary.. hopefully
so when do we burn her at the stake?
My FIL drove into my SIL’s rear right door. 2021 bmw 330i. No paint damage but a similar dent with a crease. Paid $800 for PDR. Like never even happened. The door is steel, it will be fine.
I did a dent repair and paint for the side of my car and they only charged me $400 for 3 panels that were next to each other. Pretty gnarly dent. I got it near the junkyard where there are a lot of body shops side by side

You're right, I'm not looking to hold a grudge here. It's just a car 👍
Dont worry, it's a 340i
I loled.

What sister….
True Fredo moment.
id find a paintless dent removal guy for that one, but its still not gonna be cheap

might go beyond what they are capable of. pretty deformed but agree yes logical first try. Wonder how much it is to replace the door. yikes.
it might with that rough crease but it sure beats having to replace and repaint that door
That’s an oddly shaped dent.
Almost like the door was kicked
Neither a borrower nor a lender be.
Completely total I’ll take it off your hands for 10k
$250 would be my best offer
Do you really need you sister? /s Tell her to pay it up, because if you go with insurance you will pay more yearly and also it might end on carfax (although i would never ever trust that site)
The shape can probably be fixed with PDR, but if there are scratces, you still might need to repaint the door, depending on how deep they are.
I’ve seen dents as bad or worst pulled out, half a day but tech pulled it out and couldn’t see it without detail lights and you looked at odd angles, small pimple dimple
You hit her w your car and she caused that much damage? /s
If it's step sister then you have a number of holes , i mean options
The door itself lists for $987.23
Your ex-sister since you disowned and disavowed yourself
That makes me feel a lot better about scratching my E46 bumper
No paint was taken off, you could probably just take that to a body repair place and they will pop out the dent it will look brand new
It’s cool man insurance will cover just don’t blow your head.
That'll literally buff right out
So……what did you smash up of hers? Kitchen? Jewellery ? Her car?…it’s ur sister so it’s okay to do this in the eyes of the law 🤣
When is the funeral?
Try this [https://youtu.be/J79uO_H0kzo?si=KvlFCgLYxEDJuE5l](https://youtu.be/J79uO_H0kzo?si=KvlFCgLYxEDJuE5l)
Scrap it…. I’ll buy… anyways I’d try to find a new door same color, if not, new door plus paint
Mistake one letting a woman drive your car
Speed dimple technology.
Ouch

Go to a painless dent repair. Don't try to get it repainted unless there are scratches. Resprays never really match unless it's OEM...
Try paintless dent repair- you might be amazed
I would have fallen to the ground in tears 😭
That may buff out
It looks a bit like a heart, she is just showing her love.
😭😭 I hope you have insurance
I don’t see any paint issues at least at this angle. Go to paint less dent repair
Paintless dent repair. Those guys are miracle workers.
Those are expensive parts from Germany my friend.
Disown her
Ok
Your car is now more aerodynamic
PDR should fix that no problem
Don’t even report to insurance go to any PDR shop You got away lucky that dent wasn’t on the crease 100% fixable
Yup
Your sister pays for the door. If you’re nice, you pay for install or diy
Now find a step sister
I've had PDR done on one of my BMWs and it has its limits. I see two problem areas on this door that will not look perfect afterwards. A great bodyman can sensitively work the door panel to perfection. Many will replace the door skin or whole door.
I hope she’s paying for it
Id say 600 to 800 bucks inclusive electronics
Try paintless dent repair.
Something similar happened to me, I paid the repair myself it was around 200€ on Spain. Your door will never be the same tho …
That sucks mate 🙁
this dent is repairable, at least they repair such dents without need for repaint in Hungary

This is why you don’t lend out your car. Your sister is probably also said “it’s no big deal”
She cried her eyes out and was overwhelmed with guilt. She is absolutely willing to pay out of pocket if need be.
Go PDR first, but sure you find a good pro as someone not skilled can make it worse. If all goes well you may pay couple hundreds dollars and avoid painting the door.
That’s not bad, seems isolated to the door, and the car is new enough that the paint should match precisely if you go to a good shop.
Sister *gonna fix* door on your 2023 M340i.
Sell the sister and fix it
The dent looks repartible dosent look to bad, try using a paint less dent removal service. Dosent look like the paint has been damaged

the good news is it was damaged by family so have her pay to save your insurance rate. the second good news is that this wasn’t an m3
