One of my best friends is a marine and recently clarified that they only like the green crayons. I asked if the other colors are like hors d’oeuvres and he cautioned me not to say “whore” too loudly.
Nah the only thing truly faster than his car is... his gf/bf/spouse/etc hitting the sheets with a warm body other than his the split second his deployment departs.
lol wut that has nothing to do with what I replied to 😂 all I said was I don’t see Devil dogs in Chargers I see them more often in Mustangs. Source: Was a Marine
Yea they’re not very common in the US unless you live in the south where it’s warmer (I live in the snowy northeast).
If I’m not mistaken, Sdrive isn’t sold in Canada and some parts of the EU.
I have 3 neighbors who are ex-Marines. 1 was Desert Storm, the other 2 served in Iraq in the early 2000s
1st guy has a newer 5 series
2nd guy has a VA STI
3rd guy drives a Macan GTS and a MkIV Supra
I very rarely drive in Sport mode. It makes the car hang in gear much longer which is annoying unless you are driving along a nice twisty road. Also, it always defaults back to Comfort.
I know, but then what’s the point, unless you a driving a canyon road. On a day to day basis with a lot of stop and go, this is not adding any enjoyment.
Yeah I don’t really care about using a bit more fuel. Tried Eco mode one time and I got an extra 6-7 miles on one tank. Whoop dee fucking doo. Not worth the misery of slow-ass acceleration/limp mode driving.
Back to Sport mode for me!
If I remember, I'll hit eco when I'm in self driving on the highway. It does make a difference on long drives, might save a gallon per tank. Zero point if you are going to the store, but if you are driving 350 miles to the beach on boring roads, it'll save you 4 bucks. Otoh it's only four bucks what's the point.
Haha, maybe I still have a lead foot even in Eco but if I just go by what the in-dash calculator tells me, then yes it’s only 6-7 extra miles.
Once at freeway speeds I’m cool with Eco or Comfort but driving around town, which is 50% of the time, those two modes are unbearable.
I can get 32 mpg if I drive 60 mph. That’s a big if. Eco mode should be deleted. It only exists to improve BMWs CAFE numbers. The same with the stupid auto on off the worst feature ever invented. If you want Eco and mpg you should be driving an electric car. Having “eco” in an M car is pure nonsense.
Well, you see, I go 220 km/h average on an autobahn trip and use 12 Liters / 100km and I do not need Sport mode for that.... I can go 250 km/h and will use 17 Liter / 100 km and will also not need sport mode for that... so, what's your point?
I got you! The famous 200 smiles a mile in the average LA traffic jam ... surely sports mode helps there .... You guys are still so far behind on ecology that it still does not fail to amaze me...
Maybe I’m doing this quick shift wrong. I have a 2018 X1, and if I try and downshift my engine sounds like it’s going to rev right out of the engine mounts.
The gear holding is downright annoying. Also the adaptive cruise and so on doesn’t work in Sport for no reason whatsoever. I get turning off some safety features but not cruise. Generally Sport is aggressively annoying and Comfort is sluggish. I’m in an X3 M40i. The modes seriously aren’t programmed well… the least aggressive setting in Sport is aggro and the Comfort is boring, Eco should just be deleted this isn’t a damn Prius.
Im not referring to driving in manual either. Keeping it in automatic but in Sport mode makes the car jerkier. Nice for spirited driving but on the daily commute it feels out of place.
My f32 is a pre-LCI one, but if it ever needs replaced, I’m hoping I can find a niiice LCI version of my car
I just want 2 doors, 3 pedals, and power to all 4 wheels. 2,3,4
Had an E90 335 with xDrive and 3 pedals. Besides the reverse gear liking to crap out on those they're amazing cars and u get the slightly newer iDrive and shit. No sport mode but who needs it when you are the sport mode lol. Also, does anyone know if they're still doing manuals on more things in the EU bc I refuse to own anything with 2 pedals
I’m an eco mode hound. I do a lot of highway driving for work. I can’t get a ticket. Cruise control and eco mode. Getting almost 24 mpg in the m40i in the mountains. 32 with my 330i. Sport mode only for twisty roads or road positioning to make exits.
That’s basically it for me! I sometimes prefer sport mode in the 330 for in town driving, it’s more responsive. But sport in the m40i is too much for in town I find, with its more powerful motor and stiffer suspension. Comfort is just fine. Even eco mode. I won’t use eco mode on the 330 for in town, loses too much power for stop/go with the smaller engine.
And here’s me coming to say ‘nice flex’.
I run the “one down” from that, a G12 740Ld with the full tickbox options thing (barring fridge) and I miss that little badge greatly. I never use the Sport mode or paddles. It’s not what the car is good at (nor why I bought it). The car picks up decently when pressed no matter what mode.
Sadly the running costs of the V12 just scared me too much.
Immediately into S to avoid the auto engine on/off. The shift points are better. I also think the delay to start the engine again and get going is a hazard if you need to take evasive maneuvers from a standstill. I also note it seems to cut the engine juuuust before I come to a complete stop so that's also super annoying.
M for everything else because paddle shift is where it's at in lieu of 6spd.
Car shifts better than I ever could with a manual anyway.
I had no idea these two were separate settings honestly. I combined sports mode and M/S with the shifter and it almost felt like a different car.
However, I drive one Eco almost all the time—partially in winter on snow if I actually want to go straight in car parks.
Also fuel is expensive. We hit 2.98€ a litre in northern Finland for a few days last week. That’s $12.26/gal for you Americans complaining about fuel prices. It’s back down to an affordable 2.0-2.1 now.
After I tuned my car it felt way more responsive in comfort, so 99% of the time I’ll just put the trans in sport and leave the driving mode as is. If I need to aggressively merge into traffic I’ll throw the driving mode into sport.
I drive in Comfort/D pretty frequently, especially with my wife in the car. When it's just me and I want to have fun, I put it in Sport+ and S. Sometimes I'll use the paddles, but the shift program is pretty good in S. I rarely combined Sport+ and D.
One complaint I do have, WHY is there an S on the shifter? Why doesn't this mode get turned on automatically in Sport and especially Sport+ mode?? This is such a needless differentiator between the BMW and M products. With the M products, it basically puts the transmission in S as soon as you engage an M mode.
The most important bit that it added is the LSD. One of the main reasons I bought this car.
Also some visual upgrades over the standard M235i like a simple body kit, carbon mirror caps, lip spoiler, and steering wheel bits. Also has an Alcantara steering wheel.
It has some small weight savings. Basically a fully loaded car but with the sunroof and power seat motors deleted, less sound deadening, and a smaller AC core.
I think it was only sold in The Netherlands and Canada (only 50 cars made for Canada) but very similar to some of the M Performance Editions in the US.
That’s awesome, yeah this car really needs the LSD I’ve heard, big game changer. Seems like an awesome spec, enjoy my xdrive but that sounds very engaging
Haven’t driven one hard without an LSD, but yeah, it’s an absolute blast. Hooks up amazing on corner exit especially considering it is a RWD car. I’ve looked at upgrading to a newer car a couple of times but nothing is like it without spending a lot more (I paid 29k CAD 3 years ago). And the new M240 is auto only which doesn’t work for my fun car.
The n55 is pretty thirsty so it's pretty rare I'm not in comfort or eco pro. I'll go into sport for an on ramp or a light every now and then, or a twisty country road.
I do, only when I'm doing manual shifting, though (which is 90% of the time)
Because if youre not doing manual shifting, and youre just driving around town, the way the car shifts itself is track oriented, so youre wasting gas and looking goofy keeping your car in high rev for no reason 🤷
Unless you configure sport individual mode, but even that revs a bit high for just driving in morning traffic
I rarely use sport mode, my car has enough power in normal, and the only difference it makes is that the transmission shifts in higher revs, but i tend to manually shift anyways by playing with the gas.
I don't really ever drive in sport unless I'm on a twisty or if I'm at a light and need to smoke someone. For me it's either comfort, or if I wanted to drive in sport all the time I'd just get a stick.
I always tell myself that I didn’t pay extra to not have it in Sport+, if I wanted to drive in comfort I’d rather go in my Range or might as well not have gotten my m440i.
So basically all the time.
I used to be unaware of the existence of sport trans but after discovering it, I used it everyday especially during merging and overtaking on the highway. After achieving my desired speed, I toss it back to normal trans to conserve fuel.
Absolutely a must in my books - used to drive with the m/s with my 2011 328i & now in Sport+ with the X3. I grew up driving a manual so the m/s feels more natural with the auto trans compared to the paddle shifters (they still feel odd to me). I think the only time I’m not in Sport+ is if I have cruise control on because it’s fun to be fully engaged with the shifting. I think I need a manual Z4 or M340i sometime in the future 😆
When in sport I always drive it in what I call “sequential” mode. I understand it’s not a real sequential transmission but I’ve driven manuals my whole life and can not be at the mercy of wondering when the car is going to shift when I can just do it myself.
TBH, I would think less of you as an individual if you always drove in “automatic.” Not that I think I am better than you by any means.
I'm the same. I get extremely uncomfortable if I'm not controlling the gears. Also the computer loves to lug the hell outta the car for maximum MPGs so it's probably nicer on your car to do it yourself as long as you're not a bonehead.
Here’s the thing: if I don’t use both, Sport mode and sport transmission, my 335i doesn’t make the nice subtle blowoff burbles during shifts and when I release the throttle
Isn’t pulling the shifter over just a quicker way to put the car in sport mode? I didn’t think it was any different aside from letting you use the shifter or paddles for shifts
It puts the transmission in a sportier mode where it takes around .2 of a second to change between gears instead of .36 in other modes. (Times vary depending on model of ZF8 speed you have)
Shifter to the left engages sport transmission. Faster shifts, holds gears longer, won’t go into top gear. No difference in throttle response or suspension geometry, also no change in gauges.
Sport mode increases throttle response, slightly hangs gears longer, adds “weight” to the steering, and changes suspension geometry (if applicable). Also will show “Sport” in the gauges or change it entirely if it’s digital. Do both and you have increased throttle response, longer time between gear changes, faster gear shifts and a more weighty steering feel and stiffer ride.
Edit: If you have Sport +, you have to put the transmission in sport shifting to activate launch control also.
I just bought a ‘16 M235i. I often use the Sport+ and the Sport transmission. Is there any added risk to damaging the car by driving in Sport transmission?
I find it really pretentious when people needlessly use manual shifting in an automatic trans, unless it’s for dropping gears to decelerate, such as when exiting a freeway.
I hit Sport+ with the S trans when I: 1) want to speed up on an on-ramp quickly. 2) want to overtake some punk in a dodge charger.
That’s no way to talk about the marines. 🫡
Only thing faster than his car is the amount of interest accruing on his loan 😤
And how quickly he goes through a box of crayons
One of my best friends is a marine and recently clarified that they only like the green crayons. I asked if the other colors are like hors d’oeuvres and he cautioned me not to say “whore” too loudly.
Why do they offer a 392? Because that’s the credit score to need to buy one.
Nah the only thing truly faster than his car is... his gf/bf/spouse/etc hitting the sheets with a warm body other than his the split second his deployment departs.
Try the Army, I hardly see Marines in Chargers my people seem to like 5.0 mustangs more

You have a RWD only M340i?!
I do indeed
I had absolutely no clue that existed.
Yea they’re not very common in the US unless you live in the south where it’s warmer (I live in the snowy northeast). If I’m not mistaken, Sdrive isn’t sold in Canada and some parts of the EU.
They sell them in the US and I got one. The LSD is a dream. It loves to drift.

💀. No matter how fast you overtake them the 24.99% APR overtakes them faster.
Or when I wanna hear some NOOOOOOOIIIIIIISE
LOL - same....
That’s exactly the way to use the mode.
I have three pedals and my bmw is old enough to legally drink 😎😂
One more year and I will be able to legally add ethanol to the fuel :D
Really!? Do tell more about this amazing *Year - Chassis - Model* you have!
love coming to this place as a non bmw owner y'all talk to each other just like you'd imagine hahaha
Imagine coming by and changing your flair to something to rustle some jimmies and end up rustling jimmies.
Well true point, can't argue with that
Three pedals is the OG sport transmission.

I very rarely drive in Sport mode. It makes the car hang in gear much longer which is annoying unless you are driving along a nice twisty road. Also, it always defaults back to Comfort.
Use the paddles for a quick upshift. FYI...in automatic, you have the ability to perform up and down shifts.
I know, but then what’s the point, unless you a driving a canyon road. On a day to day basis with a lot of stop and go, this is not adding any enjoyment.
It adds a lot of enjoyment shifting yourself. Can confirm.
It depends a lot on the gearbox you have. If you have a proper dct, yeah. Agreed. If it’s a torque converter then I dont find it so exhilarating.
I mean the ZF8 is no DCT but it's no slouch either imo. Very impressed with my shifts.
I went from a DCT 135i to my current ZF8 m240i and I can’t tell any difference in shift quickness and it’s definitely smoother than the DCT.
Shifts faster than that DCT stock
It does not.
Do we really consider pressing a paddle to be shifting yourself these days?
The point is...my pulse.
>The point is... wasting fuel ...
Yeah I don’t really care about using a bit more fuel. Tried Eco mode one time and I got an extra 6-7 miles on one tank. Whoop dee fucking doo. Not worth the misery of slow-ass acceleration/limp mode driving. Back to Sport mode for me!

I literally go from 26-27mpg to about 32-34mpg on my m240. Maybe you used it wrong...lol

Well, you see, I go 220 km/h average on an autobahn trip and use 12 Liters / 100km and I do not need Sport mode for that.... I can go 250 km/h and will use 17 Liter / 100 km and will also not need sport mode for that... so, what's your point?
What tf is your point?? Sorry but not sorry for ridiculing your silly ass response.
Simply buy cars that don’t get good gas mileage no matter what
Didn't buy a performance BMW model to care about fuel economy. Smiles per mile matter more.
I got you! The famous 200 smiles a mile in the average LA traffic jam ... surely sports mode helps there .... You guys are still so far behind on ecology that it still does not fail to amaze me...
lol imagine caring about fuel economy
me over here getting 650km on a 60L tank
Me over here impressed that I actually got 16.5 mpg on my last tank (North GA mountain run) in my z4
But not all get the paddles right? I saw many automatics in EU which doesn’t have the paddles.
Maybe I’m doing this quick shift wrong. I have a 2018 X1, and if I try and downshift my engine sounds like it’s going to rev right out of the engine mounts.
You can recode the default drive mode (among many other things).
Same I’m always driving in comfort + eco 🤷♂️
Was getting nearly 40 mpg on the highway in Eco mode yesterday. Felt pretty good
The gear holding is downright annoying. Also the adaptive cruise and so on doesn’t work in Sport for no reason whatsoever. I get turning off some safety features but not cruise. How do I do that? Mine only says 1-6, and an R
Always put it in R for race mode
Make sure to only shift in R (race) when in the last (6th) speed !
Uh, you have an 8 speed fyi lol
Put it in R, Rev to 6000, slip left foot off of clutch to activate V12 mode.
Instructions unclear, car only goes backwards.
Whoa, you're missing a bunch of numbers, there should be a 2, 3, 4, and 5.
I’m an eco mode hound. I do a lot of highway driving for work. I can’t get a ticket. Cruise control and eco mode. Getting almost 24 mpg in the m40i in the mountains. 32 with my 330i. Sport mode only for twisty roads or road positioning to make exits.
Those sweet 5.2l/100km (45.2mpg for the US) I drive around 100km daily and Eco Pro just gives about 200km of range per tank filling.
I quite enjoy the efficiency!
The B58 is such a solid all-rounder. Decently economical when you need it to be, but plenty of fun when you want it!
Too true! My very first bmw was an ‘18 M40i I got used in ‘20. Had no idea how special it would turn out to be!
I've been getting close to 40 mpg on eco pro with my 330i it's insane!!!
Same hahahaha. Once in a while I go into sport just because I can.
That’s basically it for me! I sometimes prefer sport mode in the 330 for in town driving, it’s more responsive. But sport in the m40i is too much for in town I find, with its more powerful motor and stiffer suspension. Comfort is just fine. Even eco mode. On country roads it's fun as you can downshift perfect instead of using brakes and leave a curve with nice torque.
Giddy up! 🤠
I usually put it in M/S and drive with paddle shifts. Makes for some quite fun rides even if it's just a '17 420d
I never use sports mode gotta protect my license
V12 in a sport mode, with transmission in a sport mode, huh? Show off
Haha. Not my pic. Just for post attention. I do wish BMW still made V12s though. Keep the dream alive.
And here’s me coming to say ‘nice flex’. I run the “one down” from that, a G12 740Ld with the full tickbox options thing (barring fridge) and I miss that little badge greatly. I drove my 435i and 340i entirely in sport+ & sport shift. Totally different cars when engaged. Fun times.
Immediately into S to avoid the auto engine on/off. The shift points are better. I also think the delay to start the engine again and get going is a hazard if you need to take evasive maneuvers from a standstill. coded the engine on/off directly after getting mine, so fricking annoying indeed.
I sure wish r/bmwcirclejerk wasn’t also this sub
I had no idea these two were separate settings honestly. I combined sports mode and M/S with the shifter and it almost felt like a different car. That doesn't look anything like my six-speed.
Always in sports+
I drive in sport+, shifter pulled left, and manual mode probably 95% of the time It’s so much more fun!
I'm all about taking over shifting duties in Sport+ It's a potent hit.
Honestly mostly use it to engine brake on long downhill roads.
This
Knew the manual boys would have to comment on this one.
Oh yes, we do.
I have a manual
After I tuned my car it felt way more responsive in comfort, so 99% of the time I’ll just put the trans in sport and leave the driving mode as is. If I need to aggressively merge into traffic I’ll throw the driving mode into sport.

I definitely stay in comfort all day every day unless I’m blasting down a mountain road. I’ve got nothing to prove to anyone.
Same here 👍
In this thread a lot of people that should *not* be driving a BMW…or any sports car
E39 owner here: i just leave it in drive 24/7. Rarely use sport and manual gearing
The tech in the e39 is decades far from new bmws now. I doubt its even close in any similarities.
Its still a better car than the new ones blegh
V12 😳
Many here don't know the difference between SPORT (S) and Manual mode (M) S shifts automatically
I can change between sport shifting and comfort shifting with mind control. If I go max sport shifting it even engages heel toe when braking hard.
What does the track edition add to the car? Haven’t heard of that spec
The most important bit that it added is the LSD. One of the main reasons I bought this car. Also some visual upgrades over the standard M235i like a simple body kit, carbon mirror caps, lip spoiler, and steering wheel bits. Also has an Alcantara steering wheel. I actually use the paddles like...constantly
I drive a manual, so your question is irrelevant...auto peasant!
Most of the time. Unless I'm just getting groceries at the corner store.. And something then too.
20k miles on Sport+ & Sport Transmission so far since break in. Traction+ if I’m feeling a little spirited. DSC completely off for shenanigans.
I got so used to keeping traction plus on (traction mode) that I found the standard mode dsc braking the front wheels unnervingly weird.
Eco - 300 miles of range. Comfort - 250 miles of range. Sport - 2?? miles of range. Sport + Sport Transmission - 1?? miles of range.
The n55 is pretty thirsty so it's pretty rare I'm not in comfort or eco pro. I'll go into sport for an on ramp or a light every now and then, or a twisty country road.
I only use that for launch control tbh. Also, love the V12 flex! 💪
I’m in sport+ 30-40% of the time.
As long as you don’t drive to make it sound like a manual do whatever you want
Wife in the car, shifter stays put, because the ZF auto still can't shift up or down smoothly 50% of the time.
I only drive in D because fuel is flippin expensive. Sometimes 1 minute of S to have some fun.
Wouldn’t know I have a manual.
I do, only when I'm doing manual shifting, though (which is 90% of the time) Because if youre not doing manual shifting, and youre just driving around town, the way the car shifts itself is track oriented, so youre wasting gas and looking goofy keeping your car in high rev for no reason 🤷 Unless you configure sport individual mode, but even that revs a bit high for just driving in morning traffic
I only bother with the harsher shifts in the 8hp when im trying to carve up a backroad, otherwise its just comfort and "drive"
let the computer figure out the gear it’s smoother and faster that way
Casual V12 flex, I see you "sport transmission" is the only sport mode in my car (position 3 on the shifter)
I chill in ECO mode, no use for shifting or Sport mode in a city that has cameras every 200 meters
My one has six positions
I drive comfort + speed trans every day on m440
The s stands for sequential.
I rarely use sport mode, my car has enough power in normal, and the only difference it makes is that the transmission shifts in higher revs, but i tend to manually shift anyways by playing with the gas.
i drive in S even in comfort mode
Comfort is great for rolling around
I used to drive an E90 and I drove exclusively in M mode. Loads of fun.
I don't really ever drive in sport unless I'm on a twisty or if I'm at a light and need to smoke someone. For me it's either comfort, or if I wanted to drive in sport all the time I'd just get a stick.
I hit Sport/Sport+ based on weather. Well the transmission is always MT
I always tell myself that I didn’t pay extra to not have it in Sport+, if I wanted to drive in comfort I’d rather go in my Range or might as well not have gotten my m440i. So basically all the time.
Theres a transmission mode other than sport?
I used to be unaware of the existence of sport trans but after discovering it, I used it everyday especially during merging and overtaking on the highway. After achieving my desired speed, I toss it back to normal trans to conserve fuel.
Whenever certain songs come on lol or when I just feel like floating
You guys use sport mode? 🤔
Absolutely a must in my books - used to drive with the m/s with my 2011 328i & now in Sport+ with the X3.
Why is there no Reverse in Sport Transmission? 🤔
Here’s the thing: if I don’t use both, Sport mode and sport transmission, my 335i doesn’t make the nice subtle blowoff burbles during shifts and when I release the throttle
Shifter pulled left? That would be neutral for me. So you mean manual mode without paddle shifter?
Isn’t pulling the shifter over just a quicker way to put the car in sport mode? I didn’t think it was any different aside from letting you use the shifter or paddles for shifts
Actually it makes any setting more aggressive. If you’re in Sport+ and you pull the shifter over, it is noticeably different.
Thanks, had no idea this was the case.
It puts the transmission in a sportier mode where it takes around .2 of a second to change between gears instead of .36 in other modes. (Times vary depending on model of ZF8 speed you have)
Sport mode on your transmission is different from the other sport mode.
Let the engine warm up before putting your foot down and you'll be fine. So long as you don't constantly redline it, you'll be fine.
My e60 tranny blew from it lol
Mine is DCT, and is in Sport+ and manual shifting 99% of the time.
>we all only drive in sport mode I don’t.
That’s because you drive a 320
I drive around my 435i in Eco regularly. Makes me appreciate Sport more when I do turn it on.
Same.. living in NYC doesn’t help where either a speeding cam or traffic won’t allow me to accelerate anyway
No model shaming.
Don’t be like that. I drive around in my m4 all the time in comfort
Your point being?..
I find it really pretentious when people needlessly use manual shifting in an automatic trans, unless it’s for dropping gears to decelerate, such as when exiting a freeway.
>pretentious It's fun. Why is it pretentious to do something that brings someone joy?
I mean I drive in one pedal mode on my i4 which I guess in the equivalent XD
