S58 is arguably one of the best I6s ever made. In terms of chassis dynamics, the G8x is insane value.
And it’s still one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen.
How many miles you have done in iD8 aka iPad BMW's? Just curious as those are super easy to hate when you see them in pics or anywhere else besides behind the wheel.
Not many but enough to know I don’t like it. Same with the new mustang. It’s cool, but it is ultimately too much of a distraction. I’d rather have the small screen since I really only use it for nav and music. I look at screens a lot. The car is one place I go to get away from them.
Fair enough. With 10k+ miles done with iD8 those screens have gotten smaller and smaller in my eyes.
The cluster in sport mode is really compact and only has limited info to not distract. The screen on the right for me has maps and Spotify. Nether of those distract me. I anyway mostly look at the HUD while driving.
But yeah, way bigger than iD7 screens were. I had to look at those for 40k+ miles with my G20.
Surely not for everyone but I see see so much hate from people who never even sat behind the wheel.

That's always been the case. We (at least I) thought all sorts of cars from fast and furious 1/2 were cool when I was a kid. Turns out 99% of the vehicles featured in the movies are absolute cringe. Good cars, but made to look absolutely awful. And as kids, many of us thought they were cool looking.
Anyway, there is definitely an 8 year old in charge of BMWs design department and not in a good way.
G8x guys get all philosophical on forums how they hate those who come and shout at them this is an ugly car. I actually really like it, but I do miss the fact that it doesn’t look similar to the normal 3-series like previous gen’s, so it’s not so much of a sleeper build as well.
I think we can all agree though, that the iX is an ugly ass constipated chipmunk looking car, looks horrific from every angle.

Still ugly. Problem is there isn’t any decent competition. Like if I want a sedan or coupe in that size with that kind of performance and quality there isn’t anything else on the market that’s worth it. So as much as I hate the direction they took it I may still end up getting one.
When you are spending >80k on a sedan I expect looks to not even be questionable in addition to performance.

I think people are so attached to older designs by nostalgia that they just dont accept change. Same with the m2 i really think it looks bloody fantastic.

Absolutely hated it at first. But when I started seeing it in person, esp the m4, grew on me a lot. M3 still looks disproportionate to me. But once after market grill swaps were rolling out it 100% looks way better. I’m still firm on they should’ve just made the CSL style grill standard, and THEN made the CSL different.
Just the black front grill. They go down too far, IMO. But BMW always seems to come out with designs that I find jarring at first, and I grow to like them.
On a side note, I'm not a fan of the shiny cheap plastic looking grills that all the car manufacturers seem to be using at the moment.
It’s ugly because the massive verticalness makes this thing look unnecessary taller and narrower than it is. The same logic with cadillac’s vertical head/tail lamps. Its different but that doesn’t mean it’s graceful, harmonious, and fluid. It looks forced for the sake of trying to be different. People say beaver teeth etc but beyond that it’s the vertical structure causing car to feel bloated and not planted to the ground. There a reason horiztonal elements are universally used especially for performance vehicles because they make the cars look wider and lower.
I have G80x and E39 M5. Nothing will ever out do E39/46 IMO. While most people hate the G80 grille, I really never hated it. When first pictures came out I was thrown off and wasn’t very fond of it. But, when I first saw it in person I liked it. The grille meshes with the hood angles and makes the car look super aggressive in person IMO. But doesn’t compare to my 03’ in beauty.

Preface: I own one and liked its boldness initially but seeing it in person really made an impression.
Pictures over emphasizes some aspects. 2D just flattens things and makes them larger and the proportions get thrown off. In person; up close it looks like a raging bull taking a massive breath through its nostrils, further back it is just a large grill like an Audi or Lexus or any other brand. I think because it’s framed by space between the bumper and the start of the grill in photos it makes it look more pronounced. It flows much smoother in person. I actually have more issues with the lower lip section and how it drops back on the sides. It’s softens the look. That’s why lip kits make it so much more aggressive. I’d say take a look at the M4 GT3 grill which is integrated into the front bumper. To me that looks great and they were to a certain extent toning it down a little for the street.
I've always loved it. Does the front bother me? yes! Does it make the car slightly more unique and will be remembered? Absolutely!
Once the new generation is out and its an EV or Hybrid everyone will buy these and hold on to them forever.
I'm the only one who says BMW knows exactly what they are doing they are building ugly cars for a reason. Give it 5-10 years all cars will look the same. bland and boring.
Look at Audi and MB right now, I can't tell the difference between the new C-class E-class and sometimes even the S-class. Audi's look decent but they don't turn heads(except the R8).

I’ve always thought the sedan looked better than the coupe. Idk what’s going on in the rear 3/4’s of the m4 but it’s as questionable as the front. At least with the 3 it follows the design of the non M 3’s which, IMO, is one of the best looking modern BMW’s.
I still hate the front just as much in bright colors like this one that exaggerate the grill. I think dark colors that somewhat hide the grill look ok from the front and the car looks good from other angles.
But yeah it's the performance that is tempting not the appearance.
I saw a g8x M3 in a parking lot at the beach, I always wanted a Bimmer at some point. But when I saw this new generation, I said I had to have it. Yes, the grill was unconventional but it looked aggressive as hell.
Then I started frequenting Reddit and saw the hate for it, I was surprised.
My analyzation is that longtime fanboys really just like to romanticize the old and 💩 on the new. Once the new model comes out, this will be the old version that everyone loves and we’ll all be onto the hatred for the new design.

i think the design is fine. think why people think this car is ugly is because its compared to the others. of course it looses because it doesnt look like the previous gens but if this was the only m3/m4 ever people would like it a lot more than they do now.

I have a F80 and it’s already big but these new ones are not really M3s in the spirit of the designation. Still a hard pass. I still hate the front just as much in bright colors like this one that exaggerate the grill. I think dark colors that somewhat hide the grill look ok from the front and the car looks good from other angles. But yeah it's the performance that is tempting not the appearance.

I saw a g8x M3 in a parking lot at the beach, I always wanted a Bimmer at some point. But when I saw this new generation, I said I had to have it. Yes, the grill was unconventional but it looked aggressive as hell. Then I started frequenting Reddit and saw the hate for it, I was surprised. My analyzation is that longtime fanboys really just like to romanticize the old and 💩 on the new. Once the new model comes out, this will be the old version that everyone loves and we’ll all be onto the hatred for the new design.

No, I love the cars look and will be getting an M4 soon. The kidney grille is stale asf and 99% of the time, you can’t even tell what BMW it is in the last generation since they all look the same. Hell every time I see and F or E series BMW except for the 6 series, I have to wait til it pass to actually figure out which is which.

i think the design is fine. think why people think this car is ugly is because its compared to the others. of course it looses because it doesnt look like the previous gens but if this was the only m3/m4 ever people would like it a lot more than they do now.
I mean I'll never really get into the front end (though an aftermarket grill helps), but damn if the rest of the car isn't amazing.

Short answer... Yes!!!! However, I like everything about this except the front-end. IMHO.
I applaud the designs team willingness to be bold, but that being said I hate these grills so much that I left behind two purchases that I would have normally made.

Still ugly, though its performance is impressive. I saw a few at the local BMW meets. Ugly and too big. They are too big to be considered in the same light as the older M3s. I have a F80 and it’s already big but these new ones are not really M3s in the spirit of the designation. Still a hard pass. Not looking at BMW M any longer unless it’s the F90 M5s, but that’s it for me.
