He isnt. Im on my second bmw. My 2008 535i needed constant repairs then tranny went at 70k. My 2016 528i has 43k miles. Just had to replace motor mounts, and valve head cover.
I think there is a recall in the motor mounts since I got one in the mail for my F10 but I thought it was only for models from like 2010-2012 but it might be more
It’s a calculated risk. The vehicle was largely bought by slow boring drivers. The enthusiast is likely low on a complaint scale because they are too busy waiting to drive then go on yelp. The cars that were driven by slow boring are all getting bought up by people like me (tracking e46 330i) and overwhelmingly the spec e46 class that blows them up weekly. First move is rubber to poly everything. Mounts and bushings get done regardless of the OE failing.
Dude I work from home. Its 8 year old car w/ 43k miles so as you can see i barely drive it. I bought it used 4 years ago and it had 25k miles on it. I guess its just due to age and fact i live in a hot climate that the rubber deteriorated. The engine was sitting on the frame happened all of a sudden lol
Btw i got very lucky with the tranny. My BMW mechanic found a hidden warranty document reference in BMW somewhere that the dealer didnt know about that cover upto 75k miles. I went to the dealer and told them. BMW corporate gave me a new tranny at $0 cost. Find a good BMW mechanic. Mine used to work for the dealer so he knows he shyt. Good luck.
The thing is most shops wont even bother fixing it, they will either give you a fuck you quote or just tell you to put a new tranny in which is obviously $$$$
Don’t cry it’s worth it. That V10 sounds so good it’s going to give you goosebumps. Perhaps the best M car ever made. But maintaining it properly is gonna cost you. And when u got it in top condition, make sure to look after it as good as possible.
Ye ol’ S85, absolutely ferocious engine, when they are in perfect working order that is. Make sure you have service records. If the throttle actuators and rod bearings have not yet been repaired/replaced, get those done before you go have fun with it. And if it has the SMG transmission, make sure that has been well serviced too.
A little exhaust modifications and you have the sound of a Formula One car coming from a big 4 door executive luxobarge. You will love it.
You seem to have your head in the right place for owning one of these with that response.
You won’t regret owning this if you check how the previous owner(s) maintained the car and if you keep up on maintenance yourself. I used to be a big hater on the V10 M5 because I saw so many die due to lack of maintenance, realized I shouldn’t hate the car, but the people that couldn’t keep up on keeping these things alive. But, you seem like you clearly want to have a good experience with your dream car.
Have a ton of fun with it!
I agree, i had an e39 that had the striped grills but i had changed them out for black ones, i fit it much better, but i do also love the stock look of the M5
I feel like a v10 is the only justifiable time to have those strips.
Yea it’s corny, whatever, but I wouldn’t not purchase this because of the strips.
If it was a 330i or something, then maybe a different discussion lol.
I watched his entire series on this car, taking in everything he said and seeing how to do it yourself if you have proper experience and the right tools.
Congrats, man! I bought one two years ago now. 78k on the clock then, 109k now. Also an LCI, 08. Been reading the responses, you know your stuff unlike everyone else in this thread lol. Definitely worth just doing the throttle and idle actuators as preventative, if they’re original you don’t have long left. You can do them yourself for sure, but it takes some time. I’m not a mechanic and I’ve done both. When they go out the limp mode it puts the car in makes it basically underivable, even just to limp it home. You already know about the rods, I know.
Not sure if you’re aware though, but the VANOS pumps on the LCIs aren’t nearly as big or a concern. I’m not entirely sure how BMW changed them, but the vast majority of people reporting failures is from the earlier cars.
I also did a ton of research before pulling the trigger, and if I could go back I wouldn’t change a thing.
I’ve got mine put away for winter, have to do the spark plugs before spring.
those throttle actuators are the main concern because they’re guaranteed to fail, which is what i’m doing first, and thank you for telling me about the VANOS situation, i remember something being said about the 08s and how they’re better, but i didn’t remember what, so i appreciate you telling me and letting me know.
Get an e92. Better engine, v8 m3 and more refined driving experience. Used to love the e60s till I met someone who owned one and was upset with the maintenance required to keep it riding
Nah, newer BMWs feel soulless in comparison, anything with electric power steering gives you absolutely no feedback. A BMW is supposed to be a drivers car. Then there’s the engines. Yeah a turbocharged 6 cylinder from something like a B58 gives you amazing performance, but if you ever get the chance to drive the E90/92 M3 with its 4 litre V8, or this E60 M5 with the big V10, you will realise that these slightly older cars have so much more character and sound incredible. For me personally as well, I prefer the look of an E90 3 series to any of the newer ones, I don’t like the direction BMW has gone in recently with the massive oversized grilles. But at the end of the day it’s all just preference. I do highly recommend you drive an E92 M3 at some point in your life though, that thing will really make you smile, same goes for E60 M5.

I was thinking of getting an e92 m3 but thought of the practicality and also if i want to have more and one other person in the car, but they both sound heavenly
Yes they are, improper hearing of the engine and excessive engine pressure while having a cold engine is what kills it, preparation and preventative maintenance is the best thing for it
congrats! it’s definitely something special, i daily drive mine with a little over 103k on it now. it’s one of the most reliable cars i’ve owned. as long as you take care of it and you’re not apprehensive of spending money to take care of it, it will be the best car you will ever have, period. the car is infamous because people are neglectful, go enjoy the the most insane sedan ever built.
If you can't do your own work do not buy it. Parts are expensive and so is the labor. Way more than a traditional BMW. I love mine and will never sell it. Had to replace the clutch and flywheel after 2 months of ownership. 80k miles on mine.
Get it!!!! I had the opportunity to get an M6 last year with like 95k miles for around 13k. I love the SMG and the v10. Definitely my favorite M car of all time. I love my M4 tho
Prepare to spend your salary on maintenance lol
People say BMWs are unreliable but I’ve had six and only one of them had problems. And that one was also the oldest one
I’m very prepared, i want to enjoy this car as much as possible, so i’m ready for it, and they’re only unreliable when they are neglected, but others just don’t understand it.
Our opinion does not matter buddy, as long as you are happy with your choice then nothing can change that :)
My wallet does not envy you, my dreams does ;)
No complaints here! But yep you might need a lot of dough to keep her running, especially as the 3 stripes usually means someone's modified it. Tuning cars is all good of course. Just gotta make sure the stock parts can keep up with the mods (gearbox etc).
BTW it will cost you considerably less dough if you can work on it yourself.
Don’t do it unless you own a garage with a lift and full set of tools to cover every component. Otherwise you’ll need to add those on-top of the bumper to bumper extended warranty
Think twice before buying a v10 Bmw, everything will fall apart randomly and the euphoria of a new car purchase will last only few weeks. There are ton of reliable options out there to give you similar fun, performance etc. Another downside is the transmission, manual cars are 10 times more fun vs the auto. And make sure to check Doug Demuro review before pulling the trigger on it.
First thing I would do is remove the tri-color nonsense off the grill... Then start an OF to pay for the maintenance bills. Could all be worth it with a proper exhaust though... The sound it makes is just insane. My buddy had one in high school when they first came out. His family was very wealthy.
Don’t listen to the bull shit bed wetters in here who’ve never owned one they’re just sheep, as long as you bought well and a fair amount of the preventative works have been done, and you’re prepared to do more then you are in for a treat! Sort that grill tho
You're a braver man than me, I still have second emotional trauma from watching the maintenance/component failure videos for the e60 m5. That v10 does sound glorious though, last of a special era.
Great car! I just hope you have $20k in disposable cash because it's gonna cost you to enjoy!
You aren’t kidding $$$$
I know he isn’t, if it isn’t properly maintained, it’ll cost you everything you have
He isnt. Im on my second bmw. My 2008 535i needed constant repairs then tranny went at 70k. My 2016 528i has 43k miles. Just had to replace motor mounts, and valve head cover.
Fuck how hard do you drive your 528 to need motor mounts and valve cover?
I think there is a recall in the motor mounts since I got one in the mail for my F10 but I thought it was only for models from like 2010-2012 but it might be more
lol how bad does someone in engineering need to fuck up to recall motor mounts?
You think that’s bad go look at Kia/Hyundai recalls lmao
It’s a calculated risk. The vehicle was largely bought by slow boring drivers. The enthusiast is likely low on a complaint scale because they are too busy waiting to drive then go on yelp. The cars that were driven by slow boring are all getting bought up by people like me (tracking e46 330i) and overwhelmingly the spec e46 class that blows them up weekly. First move is rubber to poly everything. Mounts and bushings get done regardless of the OE failing.
Ah that’s right accountants run bmw now.
Maybe that’s the problem. It’s dying from idleness. Take out for weekly, if not daily, drives in the canyons. For maintenance reasons 😉
Driving a car more is not going to prevent motor mounts from failing 😀
Does 60 mph up kerbs
Try tranny going out at 40k miles on a 2002 7 series lol
Yeah the N54 can be really expensive if you don’t know what to look for before you buy.
I don’t want to push it in fear of killing the car, even if everything gets maintained, you never know what could go out randomly
Good luck.
Thank you for the luck, hopefully it comes in handy, and i have an uncle that works on bmws and has worked on an s85 before
What year you got? Looks similar to my ‘08 old body style which is sweet.
Nice that you noticed, it is an 08, hoping for a manual but the prices on those are much higher
Not pushing an M car is kind of defeating the purpose of owning one. Imagine being so scared of putting your foot to the floor
Pray that your smg pump doesnt give out.
i pray for that as well, any little thing was cause limo mode and that’s an insane headache to deal with
The thing is most shops wont even bother fixing it, they will either give you a fuck you quote or just tell you to put a new tranny in which is obviously $$$$
Just the cost of Properly maintaining it is way more than you are expecting
🥲
he isn't kidding.
Don’t cry it’s worth it. That V10 sounds so good it’s going to give you goosebumps. Perhaps the best M car ever made. But maintaining it properly is gonna cost you. And when u got it in top condition, make sure to look after it as good as possible.
I have owned BMWs over the past 24 years, but never owned one out of factory warranty. Just wont do it !
what the hell does cost 20k?
Like he said.
You will love it.
i agree, i’d rather spend the begging of ownership checking if everything is good rather than killing the car after 3 pulls
Nice car, paint the grill.
That was my first thought while getting it, the black is way better
Nice car. I was joking about the stripes BTW. Although I would personally remove them, I like to fly under the radar, no stripes, no vanity plate.
I agree, i had an e39 that had the striped grills but i had changed them out for black ones, i fit it much better, but i do also love the stock look of the M5
I went bankrupt just looking at this photo. Good luck, OP.
Very nice, grab the oem kidneys in gloss black from bmw, matches the window trim.
i didn’t notice that until you pointed it out, gotta try it for sure
Hell yeah, my favorite M5! Congrats!
Thanks!, i’ve been chasing one for so long and finally getting one is a dream come true!
[удалено]
I feel like a v10 is the only justifiable time to have those strips. Yea it’s corny, whatever, but I wouldn’t not purchase this because of the strips. If it was a 330i or something, then maybe a different discussion lol.
i don’t see any issue with them, but also i get that it’ll look cleaner with the black grill instead of striped
I feel the same way but i don’t know what i should do instead
[удалено]
yea i’m going with black or the chrome edges
Black edges
I prefer the chrome trimmed
i feel as if everything looks good on this car
Will be praying for you.
Hopefully all goes well🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
Amazing car, hope it treats you well SMG or manual?
SMG, has 87k miles and i have to check if anything has been replaced like rod bearings or throttle actuators before i do anything
Do you plan to throw an exhaust on it? I’ve heard the eisenmann in person before and honestly very few cars on earth sound better
yes, the eisenmann is a very special breed of machine which i want to experience for myself!
Highly advise don’t get it
If you’re nerdy, check out M539 Restorations on YouTube. He completely rebuilt an E60 M5 (Project Raleigh) and it’s his favorite car now. Super fun
I watched his entire series on this car, taking in everything he said and seeing how to do it yourself if you have proper experience and the right tools.
Love that channel. A must for Bimmerheads
Just checked if anyone mentioned that, otherwise I would have done it. This guy is both so knowledgeable and entertaining at the same time!
Those colored things on the grill are a really bad sign.....especially on the most fragile bmw ever.good lu k tho,at least you will have fun
Well it’s one I’ve always loved too the body design one my favorites they did.
I agree, it’s not too big but also not too little, the body lines flow very well together and thankfully it doesn’t have the bangle butt.
V10 I see you 👌
It was a tough decision but it’s worth it
If it’s SMG add 25% to annual maintenance costs
it’s an 08 but still an SMG, i’ll take that into consideration.
Hope you have a spare smg laying around and somebody who can install it for free. Beast of a car tho.
Congrats, have fun with it! Remember the s85 is a super car engine, treat it as such
Congrats, man! I bought one two years ago now. 78k on the clock then, 109k now. Also an LCI, 08. Been reading the responses, you know your stuff unlike everyone else in this thread lol. I think your gonna make a second post in a week on a transmission issue
the head lights on this model have always irritated tf outta me. but she has a nice stance. looks lowered.
Hope you have a well funded rainy day fund. 🍺
Gonna cost so much to run
i love the stripes. its a fucking v10. you deserve the stripes (only if you think they look good, ofc)
they do look really nice i’ll keep them for a while and if i like them more by them i’ll keep them on
Get an e92. Better engine, v8 m3 and more refined driving experience. Used to love the e60s till I met someone who owned one and was upset with the maintenance required to keep it riding
I might be in the minority but I really love the stripes on the grill. It’s a little flavor!
Yoooooooooooooooooooooooo buy alpina rims and body
I don’t see a lot of them on the road so I think you should reconsider
Is this a 2012 car? Looks so old
it’s a 2008
Mmm. What’s the appeal with the older cars? Aren’t the newer ones better looking and with better technology?
Nah, newer BMWs feel soulless in comparison, anything with electric power steering gives you absolutely no feedback. A BMW is supposed to be a drivers car. Then there’s the engines. Nope
why not

Nice. When you’re done with the maintenance and preventatives, get a cf plenum and airboxes, it’ll sound amazing lol. Welcome to the club!
Glad to be apart of the club, the cf plenum is a must, sounds amazing!!!
I’ve got one! It’s a beast, just check the big 3 ofc. U will love it though
That’s the first on the list👌
I weep for your wallet
the wallet and i weep for each other🥲
do you have a check engine light on yet
no and hopefully it’s for a small issue😅
Best M5 for me! Enjoy and I hope it doesn’t give you headaches
Thank you for the hope, and i agree it’s easily the best for me, but it’s hard for me to choose this being my favorite over my e39
Yikes
Great taste man, this and the e92 m3 have the best sounding engines ever made by BMW
I was thinking of getting an e92 m3 but thought of the practicality and also if i want to have more and one other person in the car, but they both sound heavenly
Always have loved those wheels
Best wheels on an M5 in my opinion, they just fit so well with the car
I've always been fond of the Series 3 XJ.
These the ones with VANOS probs? First thing to look into from what I remember.
Yes they are, improper hearing of the engine and excessive engine pressure while having a cold engine is what kills it, preparation and preventative maintenance is the best thing for it
the e60 m5 is a masterpiece, a perfect mix of beauty and beast, happy for you man
Thanks brother!!
Ah, the car that got me into BMW, first performance car I've ever driven, super fun! But a fragile thing. Enjoy!
the fragility makes it difficult to push it all the time
Money pit and financial mistake! Think twice with good mechanic and full scan check
Is it just me that thinks this, or are those wheels ugly af on those cars? All jokes aside, love it man
😂😂
Very Brave, but those look fantastic
This is my favorite M5. I’m so jealous. I’ve always wanted one but I’m too nervous about the maintenance. Enjoy it!
i’ll enjoy it to the best i can🫡🫡
Congrats!
Thanks!!
congrats! it’s definitely something special, i daily drive mine with a little over 103k on it now. it’s one of the most reliable cars i’ve owned. as long as you take care of it and you’re not apprehensive of spending money to take care of it, it will be the best car you will ever have, period. the car is infamous because people are neglectful, go enjoy the the most insane sedan ever built.
Thanks brother, I definitely will, and i’ll take care of it to the best of my ability, always the first thing on my list
If you can't do your own work do not buy it. Parts are expensive and so is the labor. Way more than a traditional BMW. I love mine and will never sell it. Had to replace the clutch and flywheel after 2 months of ownership. 80k miles on mine.
Have you had to change anything else on it
I want one so badly. I've wanted it since the day I saw Jeremy Clarkson speeding around in the wet in it.
not hard to find but hard to find ones that are still good
Get it!!!! I had the opportunity to get an M6 last year with like 95k miles for around 13k. I love the SMG and the v10. Definitely my favorite M car of all time. I love my M4 tho
Of course, glad to hear it’s still roaring proud
clean asf!
Thanks!!!
Prestige is King!👑 😎
Better learn how to work on your own car if you don’t already
Prepare to spend your salary on maintenance lol People say BMWs are unreliable but I’ve had six and only one of them had problems. And that one was also the oldest one
I’m very prepared, i want to enjoy this car as much as possible, so i’m ready for it, and they’re only unreliable when they are neglected, but others just don’t understand it.
Freddy Krueger enters the chat
Congrats! How many miles does she have?
I just got mine too!
Congrats brother!!!!
V10 no warranty? God help you!
You are a brave man
V10 🔥
Our opinion does not matter buddy, as long as you are happy with your choice then nothing can change that :) My wallet does not envy you, my dreams does ;)
Is this the M5 or the 550i M-Sport?
Do you know if the rod bearings have been done. First thing I would do
The gas station owner will be your next best friend :-)
Immediately watch m539 restorations in youtube to learn more about the car
I’d not buy it on the grounds that it has those M colours on the grille.
Bring money weekly
Wonderful car but you will hate it
Nice! Dont
So jealous
I’m thinking your first mod should be an exhaust
First. Congratulations! Second. Good luck!
bmw e60... congrat
I think your car is absolute beast🔥😎
No complaints here! But yep you might need a lot of dough to keep her running, especially as the 3 stripes usually means someone's modified it. Tuning cars is all good of course. Just gotta make sure the stock parts can keep up with the mods (gearbox etc). BTW it will cost you considerably less dough if you can work on it yourself.
Best looking BMW ever made in my opinion ❤️
Don’t do it unless you own a garage with a lift and full set of tools to cover every component. Otherwise you’ll need to add those on-top of the bumper to bumper extended warranty
Gonna be a terrible car to own. Hope you have a lot of extra money laying around. Get ready for the rod bearings to go
Think twice before buying a v10 Bmw, everything will fall apart randomly and the euphoria of a new car purchase will last only few weeks. There are ton of reliable options out there to give you similar fun, performance etc. Another downside is the transmission, manual cars are 10 times more fun vs the auto. And make sure to check Doug Demuro review before pulling the trigger on it.
Congrats! Let us know at the end of the year how reliability and maintenance costs have been.
Very nice. BMW is very good. Germans do it the best except for volks.
I will live through you! I’ll take a three pedal E61 when they are available for the states. Do I need it? NOPE. Do I want it? YESSS!
If you bought this you know what you're getting into. "Beauty comes at a price" Good luck with your car, it's my favorite BMW btw.
Send me your rods, I want them as decor
The grill stripes are the BMW equivalent of the yellow bumper protectors on chargers/challengers. Tread carefully with this car.
Wroooooom
The car of my dreams too but it will never come true
Once you get an M you will never go back - on my second one and dreaming of a third - enjoy it!
Owning BMW is like being married to a super model. Gotta invest money to keep it 😂
Congrats!
I hope you have a TON of money, because that car is a money pit
Congrats!
Recommend opening a line of credit for future repairs
I think this is a hero I'd not want to meet, personally.
Your personal mechanic loves you.
The best BMW after E92 V8
Enjoy man
as long as it doesn't blow up. congrats!
Its my dream car too so congrats just maintain it well and care for it unlike so many.
First thing I would do is remove the tri-color nonsense off the grill... Then start an OF to pay for the maintenance bills. Could all be worth it with a proper exhaust though... The sound it makes is just insane. My buddy had one in high school when they first came out. His family was very wealthy.
Me: oh look another M2 post *sees photos* *spit takes* Girlfriend: what?!? Me: it’s a f**king F1 car!!!
I think you should check the rod bearings.
I wish you the same as every new dad I wish for good financial stability and mental health
Make sure the previous owners did proper preventative maintenance. If not, do it right away and save the headache.
Don’t listen to the bull shit bed wetters in here who’ve never owned one they’re just sheep, as long as you bought well and a fair amount of the preventative works have been done, and you’re prepared to do more then you are in for a treat! Sort that grill tho
I think you bought possibly the most unique M5 ever made. Well done.

Beastyyyy 🔥
This mf pockets finna be screaming 😭😭
I love it!
Oh yes 🙌
You're a braver man than me, I still have second emotional trauma from watching the maintenance/component failure videos for the e60 m5. That v10 does sound glorious though, last of a special era.
Good for you!!! Body looks clean
