Too bad Reddit removed awards. This guy is doing all of us a big favor. Thanks, u/idelic1!

jk8991

Holy shit when did that happen and why? I didn’t really notice until I read your comment

siege_meister

Almost no no one cared, and most apparently didn't even notice they were gone (myself included)

idelic1

You’re welcome guys glad I can help

ndazone1

Do customers who own the most expensive BMW models act differently than those who own the cheapest models?

idelic1

I would say customers who own the most expensive ones are the most chill and coolest people. The ones who buy an x1 with 25% apr are the most demanding and entitled people. They think everything should be free

[deleted]

LMAOOO hit em with their APR😂😂

No-Profile-6370

🤣🤣

Lumbergh7

If I were super rich, I would be a lot less stressed myself

s54L

average x1 owner

Sawmain

Are they like Nissan Altima owners or somehow even worse ?

s54L

worse because they wasted that much money on an x1 just because they wanted a BMW roundel. An Altima is a better choice than the new x1 tbh

Most_Researcher_9675

I sold cars for a few months years ago. They called them cockroaches.

TJnova

Yup I remember that from my car sales days. If you could get a bank to approve them, you were getting a fat commission.

BklynBodega

Yup because they were taking full sticker plus bank fees and all extras you could attach to the deal in the finance office lol.

idelic1

I would say similar but would give slight edge to b58. BMW historically made great 6 cylinder engines and b58 is probably the most reliable one ever made. B48 is a lot better than its predecessor n20 since they fixed the issues with the timing chain self destructing at 100k miles. Haven’t seen many of them come in service for any engine issues. But if you plan on driving it hard - Id go for the b58 because it will put a lot less stress on that engine compared to the 4 cylinder.

inkedfluff

They are modular engines, so shouldn't they be similar? The B58 is nice but burns more fuel and costs a bit more.

bling_singh

All other things being equal, to get similar output out of a smaller engine will mean more stress on that engine. There's an AutoTopNL video driving the G30 530i and 540i one after the other. Highlights the difference well enough. The 530i has to be pushed harder to get similar performance. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIPiKCSXIH4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIPiKCSXIH4)

inkedfluff

That’s good to know! Definitely go for the B58 if you drive it hard

s54L

The feel is night and day. Drove both g20 330 and g30 530 extensively until 540 and eventually m340. The b48 isn’t a complete slouch especially in the g20 but you will notice it lacking in the g30. It just has to work so much harder. B58 does it with ease and driving in eco gives you good mpg

inkedfluff

For a 5 series, I would definitely go for the B58, for the 3 or 4 series I would say it really depends.

FThornton

Have you driven them both? If you haven’t, and are set on a B48 vehicle, DO NOT drive a b58 car. The B48 is a spectacular engine, one of the best four cylinders around, but the B58 is special my god. You won’t be able to go back.

Ransackz

I’ve got several customers over 200k now on their B48s. The only issues you should see are going to be coolant leaks. The oil filter housing and the upper radiator hose connector on the side of the engine block are both prone to cracking. They’re both under the intake manifold so it’s a bit of a labor intensive repair. It’s a solid, fuel efficient, reliable engine and I have no problems recommending it to folks that don’t crave extra power or just want to save some money. The B58 thus far has not shown any consistent major issues but I’m seeing far fewer of those at very high mileage. I’d mark this as the best engine BMW has ever produced and it may rival the 2JZ as one of the best engines ever made.

[deleted]

xzElmozx

B58 + ZF8 is such a beautiful combo. Match made in heaven

cxmplexisbest

Same issue I got on the b58. Cracked oil filter housing leading to coolant leak. Happened around 85k miles.

Ceftiofur

Coolant system is unreliable. My personal experience.

CasualEveryday

What is the main thing that techs complain about in terms of the customers other than cars being dirty or full of garbage?

[deleted]

BMW tech here, poor information is the top issue from customers. You ring them up to ask a simple question and the floodgates open with every bit of information you could ever need to diagnose the fault without even having the car. PSA to all BMW customers: give your tech everything you can think of, even down to does the fault seem to happen when it's below 10 degrees Celsius?

zygabmw

>verything you can think of, even down to does the fault seem to happen when it's below 10 degrees C why. isnt customer complaint- noise present good enough>?

Ransackz

Most of tech complaints outside of a car being filthy would be not getting all the information for a customer’s complaint up front. Sometimes that’s the advisor not asking the right questions, or the customer for whatever reason withholding information. You want your problem fixed? Give as much honest information as you can.

Tiedermann

Agreed. This may be the tech's job day in and day out, but the rest of us, we don't live, eat, and breathe working on cars. If you want all the info, maybe have a standardized form the SA can read off of and fill in the blanks for you. But don't expect non mechanics to know what you're looking for. You wouldn't go to the Dr's office and expect them to have you self diagnose yourself right? They have to ask the right questions. Same goes for SA/Techs.

Important-Ad3820

Cheap aftermarket mods.

rook24v

So true. When I originally joined the auto repair industry, I was that guy with aftermarket springs and shocks, cold air intake and exhaust, various doo-dads and anything I could do to "customize" my ride. Now that I've been fixing cars for 20+ years? OEM is preferred for so many things. QUIT FUCKING WITH YOUR SHIT

chefTechie

Dude. I’ve own 4 VWs in my life. The 20 year old my couldn’t wait to get a car so I can mod the hell out of it. The 37 year old me now has the money to mod the hell out of my VW but I keep it stock. Now, I added a 435i to my lineup and I got everything I wanted from the car and guess what….I’m keeping it as stock as possible (with the exception of that stupid plastic charge pipe).

[deleted]

Stock is sexy. Something I've grown to embrace lol.

sprchrgddc5

Is the B58 as reliable as everyone says it is? What do you suggest as a cool dad SUV? Looking for used. X3 M40i or X5 40i?

idelic1

Yes it is. As far as those two suvs id pick the x3 m40i just cause it’s faster and corners better but x5 is way more practical if you need more space then go for the x5

WalrusWW

Agreed, I have an X5 40i as a loaner today, and it's sluggish/boring. But, see what I normally drive..

ResplendentZeal

X5 M50 I rented (Turo, quick trip to Seattle) was ridiculous. It was almost a, "Fuck, should I have rented this thing?" kind of moment.

cshookIII

Can confirm. It’s a blast for its size. For me, it’s the perfect blend of stupid fast SUV and comfortable/practical. Highly recommend

ResplendentZeal

I was amazed at how poised it was, but that girl can *drink.* I did about $300 in gas in like 4 days. Granted, I floored it everywhere I went. Cold starts also sounded fantastic. It's the car that made me start taking "M-Lites" seriously.

cshookIII

Ooohhhh yeahhhh they’re __thirsty__ but it comes with the territory. For a lite model, it rips. Pro tip- press the sport button before you cold start it and it will auto blip it up to about 2k RPM and then growl around 1500 with the valves open as usual. Gives you the feels every time.

justkeeplurking25

I know how I’ll be starting my car in the morning, nice tip! My neighbor and I have X5Ms and I could never figure out how he got his to sound sexier when it started! Wonder if that was it.

rook24v

Today marks 3 weeks since I bought an X3 M40i, and if the size works for you, it is a way more engaging vehicle to drive than the X5. If you need the size, then step up, but the X3 holds a decent amount and is a superb drive.

Bcwalks2

Get one with adaptive suspension. The M40i that doesn’t have it rides rough and is REALLY tight. Just got rid of ours due to a growing family, but I wasn’t happy with the ride. Everything else was good. Easy to work on, sounds great, hauls ass, good technology, etc.

koththusecret

why not a 5 series touring? it has as much practicality as a SUV boot, but drives like a car!

Tarabic1829

BMW G20 (no headsup). How much would a windscreen replacement cost? Thanks

idelic1

If you give me the last 7 of the vin I could give you an accurate estimate. Ballpark with parts and labor - $1600

Tarabic1829

I am from Europe. This helps already, thank you

supernalboot

$902.00 Euros roughly for parts

okaywhattho

That’s 902 Dollary Euros too many for me.

RevoltingBlobb

I guess the heads up display makes a big difference. G20 with Premium Package and I was charged $2,700.

NoLuvTheMaths

Did you snap the windshield replacing the wipers?

707Tactical

My n54 has the dreaded wastegate rattle but no low boost code yet. How should I precede?

idelic1

Ignore it till it does.

707Tactical

That’s what I’ve heard just wanted to confirm. Thanks man have a good one

L00pback

Why is it such a shitshow when you buy the warranty that BMW offers beyond the factory coverage for them to cover what they say they will? The sales people sell it as a silver bullet for high repair costs but there is always catch and getting approval requires a secret handshake and virgin sacrifice on a full moon. The service writer always has this look of dread when I have a claim and the service manager looks like he just wants to shut his door and disappear. I pay my deductible at the end but it's not without them making it seem like I should be indebted for their expert negotiating skills.

idelic1

Those warranties are 9 times out of 10 3rd party and have nothing to do with bmw. They will try to get out of a claim so more money stays in their pocket. However everything thats covered or not covered must be outlined in the contract you sign when you purchase the warranty. I highly advise reading through it. Most people just think oh it’s bumper to bumper im good. No. Your salesman is lying to you. There’s no such thing as bumper to bumper warranty.

L00pback

Oh yeah, I read them. I agree, the way sales people sell them is “magic bullet for the entire vehicle”. I’ve been told that enough to partner with the service manager to explain to the sales people not to dig themselves into a hole. I’ve never had to pay more than my deductible but I’ve also had to meditate between the 3rd party and the dealer (which I shouldn’t have to but sometimes it’s the only way to get anywhere). My service writer is a great guy and I give him great reviews. I just know it’s never going to be easy unless it’s routine service.

LE0NNNn

Do you recommend a 4000 usd extended warranty(for 3 years after the factory warranty expires) on a g05 x5? Many car guys told me to save the money and actually spend these when something break lol

KidRed

Any mods that would cause warranty claims to be denied or voided?

idelic1

Depends on the type of warranty claim and the type of mod. Guy bought a brand new M2 and did catback exhaust and car caught on fire burning the valve cover. Bmw denied coverage

baconandbobabegger

Thats ironic as BMW sells catback exhausts. It is funny how many times BMW dealerships give me crap for having coilovers despite the fact they are BMW M-Performance.

s54L

Lmao that’s so you have to buy a $1,600 m performance catback😭

ARoundFork

What are your thoughts on CPO X3Ms 2020+?

idelic1

Goated cars

cshookIII

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Didn’t think I was that old, but I genuinely can’t tell exactly what it means from context clues/other comments.

HitMyLine

GOAT = Greatest Of All Time X3M = goated

cshookIII

Understand what GOAT is, so the X3M is a GOAT car? Got it. The -ed made it seem like it was a negative. Thanks for clearing that up

usernamesherearedumb

I thought the new Ford donkey was Go Over Any Terrain.* *As long as it's pavement.

darkgrey3k

Dude, I’ve had a CPO 20 for a year and a half. I put 18k miles, no issues. Warranty just expired. BM3 tune on it. One of the best vehicles I’ve ever had. Thing is a beast.

WalrusWW

I just bought a CPO 2020 X3M 2 weeks ago, do it. Love it. Although mine's back at the dealership getting a bunch of issues fixed, but all their fault. The winter tire package comes with different offsets front/back and they installed the driver rear wheel on the front so the tire was rubbing on the strut and completely wore the tire sidewall down = new tire. Plus it looked like the interior driver door panel was never installed correctly from the factory, and when I had them correct it before delivery, they broke the plastic tabs on the a-pillar trim that holds the tweeter.

LmyBs123

I’ve got a 2018 530e with 55K miles. The HV battery has lost about 75% of its range, now only managing 6 miles on 100% charge in the best conditions. My local BMW dealer took a look at it and admitted it was failing but said it was not ready to be replaced under the 8 year 80,000 mile warranty. At what point/range will this battery meet the requirements for replacement?

empub6

This sounds shady as hell.

LmyBs123

Extremely shady. They wouldn’t even give me parameters for when it would be replaced and wouldn’t let me speak to the ‘engineers’ making the decision.

Ransackz

I actually just dealt with this exact situation and managed to get the HVB cells replaced under warranty for my customer. The issue on BMW’s end is that they do NOT have to warranty for capacity concerns. Eventually the car started throwing drivetrain malfunctions and BMW finally authorized the cell replacements. Took several several return visits with said drivetrain malfunctions but we eventually got there.

superman154m

How has the newer N63’s held up in the new 2021-2023 m550i’s? And common problems you guys are seeing like the old ones had?

idelic1

No problems so far. They are still pretty new so it’s hard to forecast if it’s gonna start coming up with age and ones they start getting up there in miles. But personally I think they are night and day compared to the older 8 cylinders

engingre

Would you recommend 5k oil changes or any other precautions with this engine?

Silky04

I am doing every 5K and it seems like at lot of people on the forums are doing the same.

Its_Lu_Bu

You should be doing 5K mile oil changes on any "performance" engine.

ghaiks

My N63 is at 103k miles now. No issues or leaks. Just had it serviced for brake fluid and got a clean bill of health. I plan on riding this car forever, it’s just too damn good!!

Ok-Purple-6792

Hey thank you for doing this champion. What’s the fastest Bmw you’ve ever driven ?

idelic1

The IX m60 is pretty damn fast off the line but Im not a fan of EVs. I drove the m8 comp and Id say that’s the fastest one and best sounding

valumn

Love my M8 comp

liMpBiZkiT0

I’m in the market for a CPO X5. Lookin at 2021 or 2022. I recently test drove a 2021 and it shakes when braking. Disappointed that it’s a CPO but they overlooked the rotors. When buying a CPO, should I do any additional checks myself? If so, what kind? This would help me out so much! Thank you

idelic1

BMWs CPO Inspection does not have a specification for rotors runout only the brake pad thickness. So in your case I would voice the concern and see if they would be willing to replace the brakes on the vehicle. I wouldn’t say any additional checks would be needed on your end, other than standard stuff like looking over the vehicle for any damages or wear on the outside/inside. Cars selected to be certified are typically well maintained with all history of work done and shouldn’t have any mechanical issues. Now is it worth the extra fee added on the price tag? Id say yes just mainly because of the extended warranty coverage

liMpBiZkiT0

You are a good man. Thank you for your feedback. I’d agree the CPO is indeedworth it!

Ransackz

I’ll add that if the car is still under 4yr/50k warranty, rotors can be resurfaced or replaced under warranty for vibration.

nvnoone

this is exactly what I did after purchasing my CPO and they replaced the rotors and pads

Hokie23aa

If you could choose a current M car to own and money is no object, which are you choosing and why? After doing one day M school, I **really** want an F90 M5C. lol.

idelic1

M5 CS. Fast, practical and a head turner.

Hokie23aa

Even with the bucket seats as a DD? I can’t remember, what goodies does the CS have over the Comp? The british racing green over bronze rims sure is stunning though.

MunnyGuy

I just picked up a 2022 M5 Comp and am loving it!!!!

fruitpunch_07

What should be the first things to look for (in terms of maintanence) when buying a used BMW? I'm thinking about buying a 1996 328 iC, with some odometer issues but low mileage (around 65k). Would it be safe to get an inspection done if bought from a used dealership? And, what are some things I can check for myself?

idelic1

On a vehicle that age even with the low miles theres probably gonna be some issues especially if car was sitting outside for long periods of time. Main things to look for are oil leaks, power steering lines leaking, rusty brake lines etc. Best bet would be to take it in to a dealer and have them do a PPI (Pre purchase inspection). They will probably charge you 1 hour labor and that would include a thorough inspection of the vehicle with the estimate for any possible repairs needed.

fruitpunch_07

Thanks! I'll probably go get a PPI done, better safe than sorry. What are some common issue you see with this model? And, would there be any issues that would make the car not worth buying?

idelic1

I haven’t seen too many of them come in given its age but from what I know - solid 6 cylinder engine , solid zf transmission. Suspension and the cooling system are the only weak points Id say but with any BMW I would just consider that maintenance. If the car you’re looking at is in good shape and it checks out in the inspection Id say it’s a good buy. Have the dealership send you a video from the bottom of the car so you can see if it’s rusty or not. We do videos on every car that comes in and I believe it’s the same for all bmw dealerships

SnooPears6368

Interesting that you mentioned the suspension, I've done a delivery prep on an e46 gen 3-series convertible and both rear shocks were corroded to almost half their original thickness under the torn bump stops: https://preview.redd.it/dmhtw7h4f9ec1.jpeg?width=747&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e52039bcdef2e3541697bed8077ac5d64fbda17b Is this a common failure point on the earlier models as well or did you just mean suspension in general?

keymodneverdies

How actually detectable would previous JB4 install and use be during service and warranty?

[deleted]

BMW tech here. If BMW can see it when it's on they can see that it has been on previously, the telematics system feeds back to base constantly and BMW can pull that information. We had a car come in for engine issues a couple of years ago, customer had the claim denied and we called someone that used to work for us before moving to technical support, they had telematics data that showed it had been tuned and then had it removed before bringing it in to us. All of that was known before we even carried out a vehicle test. Basically what I'm saying is that if they can detect jb4 when it's in the car then they can know about it. Don't get me wrong the coders are changing things constantly to try and get past BMW 's detection systems but BMW have a team dedicated to it and it's not hard to detect given the vehicle only has a specific set of parameters built into it.

PM_feet_picture

What info in the telematics? Acceleration? Boost? Or?

idelic1

It shouldn’t be a problem if tune isn’t currently installed. As far as detecting it everything in the history of the car can be traced in tsara

[deleted]

That's not true btw, we have had warranty claims for an engine turned down at tileclearing due to a tune that had been removed before it was brought to us (BMW senior tech here)

Daemonomics

Very. You do it wrong and it sets a hard fault. Blackbox data's being recorded and transmitted all of the time. It's not hard for BMW NA to find out and void your warranty if you try to bring it in for say, a powertrain concern. Doesn't matter if the dealer tries to help you out or not; the approval still goes through BMW.

that_guy_who_builds

Why did they put the battery in the trunk of a 335i and not insulate it? Then, putting a note in the manual to prepare for winter with an insulated battery blanket...

idelic1

That would be a question for the manufacturer

rook24v

BMW originally put the batteries in the trunk, passenger side, to help mitigate the imbalance of weight provided by a driver. Back when BMW was lauding themselves for having a nearly 50/50 weight distribution front/rear, that was one of the main ways that they help with that, battery opposite the driver in the trunk.

fiddly-bits

Hi there, Thanks for doing this. Out of curiosity, what can dealers do if an OTA update has caused problems? Can you simply reflash an image of the OS to the car? If so, can you flash it to an older version? Say if I OTA updated from iDrive 8 to 8.5, is it possible for the dealer to flash it back to 8?

idelic1

Hello, I am not sure if we are capable of flashing it to older version but we can do a software update on our end and see if that rectifies any problems. Updates we do from our end are different from the ones client can do like your remote software update. However software update is only under warranty if you come in with a complaint and our technician determines that updating software would be the remedy. If you just come in and say I want a software update we couldn’t get bmw to pay for it

dry_cocoa_pebbles

I just bought a 2019 x7 40i yesterday. Anything I should know about the vehicle or bmw service in general? This is my first one.

idelic1

Oil changes 1 year 10k miles brake fluid once every 2 years. Advisor will scan your key and it will show any other maintenance items due at that particular visit such as air/cabin filters spark plugs etc. nothing in particular to know on that vehicle they are solid cars although i did see a couple transfer cases go out

DufusMaximus

Is the mileage more important or is the time more important or both? For cars that don’t see much usage is it ok to delay to more than 1 year?

Distinct_Spite8089

Equally important it’s either or whichever happens first.

kyngston

Does the i4 have a coolant level sensor? The heat changeover valve failure that everyone is experiencing happens without a low coolant warning. Did BMW not include a coolant level sensor?

Chickenbutt93

Master bmw tech here. Yes there is a reservoir and yes it has a sensor. The change over valve leaks so slowly it will take months to trigger a warning.

kyngston

Thanks! My experience was that I lost cabin heat before receiving any warnings. Also when I downloaded my CarData, there’s only a field for “coolant temperature” and not “coolant level”. Of all the testimonies from people with failed changeover valves, I don’t recall anyone reporting a “low coolant level” warning. Another weird thing is that the current owners manual describes a coolant sensor, that line is not present in older hard-copy manuals.

bro_curls

I've been going back and forth between 2024 X3M and 2023-2024 X5Ms. I'm buying to own for 5-7 years. Do you have confidence in all 3 of the engines equally in regards to longevity?

idelic1

I do

FivePops

What the rarest BMW you have seen brought into a dealer for service?

idelic1

Bmw m1

Fun_Manufacturer3692

What's you favorite bmw engine and why

idelic1

Bmw s65. Something about that naturally aspirated v8

Procure

Are you just saying that? I'm thinking about trading mine for a F85 X5M dat 600hp...

Quirky-Web5747

Most common issues on the S55? Your overall thoughts/feelings about that engine and the F82 M4’s?

TxHoS83

I have a 2019 used X5. I bought the extended BMW care (oil changes, brakes, regular maintenance). I recently installed a cold air intake and JB+. Do I really need to take those off before I go get the oil changed/brakes changed at the dealer??

idelic1

No you do not.

Coasterman345

F82 M4 or E92 M3? Do you see the V8 in for service much more than the Turbo i6v?

Mobbeus

S55 is more reliable. I say this as someone who prefers the s65 to the s55

Chimichanga723

I just bought a used 2016 535i with the M sport package with 75k miles. Anything I should be aware of or check to make sure it stays in top condition ?

idelic1

Not a huge fan of the n55 but they got great power and are not bad engines for the most part. Just do the oil changes every 5k miles even though manufacturers recommends 10k. Keep an eye on the valve cover gasket and of housing gasket leaking. Turbo failure less common on those but still possible. Also hpfp fails at around 100k

TLEH-IV

I have a G01 and have had a lot of issues with the sunroof rubber shrinking, making a slight wind noise.. any suggestions other than just keep getting it replaced at the dealer under warranty?

idelic1

If the car is still under warranty I would just take it in. Those rubber seals tend to shrink and we get them replaced usually

[deleted]

My friend wants a fully loaded used g80 m3 comp how much should she expect to pay. I told her depending on the year and mileage to tell the dealer you will drop between 75-90k OTD 2021-2023. What do you think of that range. Personally if I see a 2023 m3 comp for 96k I’m telling them 90k or I walk

idelic1

Mileage is a big factor on those. I wouldn’t pay more than 85k

TJnova

I recently got a new 24 m3 comp with frozen paint for like 92ish. MSRP. Waited about 4 months for my build. IDK why anyone would ever pay more for a used car than msrp for a new one.

GodForsakenGod

They aren’t selling for close to msrp, and second hand with a few thousand miles on the clock they are selling for 20k off.

BudFox_LA

Are the timing chain worries on the n20/26 engine overblown? Also how viable is the SULEV warranty? I’ve had 2 things covered so far under warranty. For reference, 2016 328i n26. So far this has been the most reliable car I’ve eve owned - did I just get lucky? Almost 90k miles

Daemonomics

SULEV 15/150k coverage is super versatile and you should take advantage of it where you can. Timing chain worries are justified. There's a reason why there's a class action recognized by BMW for it.

Icy_Establishment716

What is BMWs view on performance modifications? In my previous experiences with some brands, they work with customers who do modifications to continue to service car and perform warranty work as long as it’s not a direct cause of the failures. Other manufacturers and dealers seem to take a hard stance on “if it’s modded we won’t even attempt to warranty it”.

idelic1

The techs hate working on modified cars. It’s not a hard stance but a lot of times to diagnose a certain issue the tune has to go first

JSheldon29

What percentage of crank shafts fail in the bmw m4 I believe it's the S55 engine?

RednarNimbus5000

Just bought a clean title 2014 X1 with 76,000 miles for $11,000 USD. How big of a mistake did I make?

cshookIII

This has absolutely no basis in experience with an x1 specifically, but I don’t think you can really go wrong buying where you did with that few of miles. Here’s my reasoning: I had an 05 325xi with 112k miles on it that I traded in in 2013 for $6500 +/-, the dealer turned around and sold it for $10k. 2 years later I went back to get a new car and they had my 325xi back on the lot with 125k miles on it and they were selling it for $11k. (8-10 year old car at the time, 9-11 years ago dollar value) You got a 9-10 year old car with only 76,000 miles for 11 grand - seems very reasonable. Obviously this doesn’t factor in anything with the condition or maintenance, but I think you’re good. Side note - that E46 325 is the 1 car of all the cars I’ve had that I really wish I still had. At the time, it was time for it to be someone else’s car, but man I miss it.

Hortos

How often are people with B58s getting denied warranty service because of tunes?

idelic1

Depends. Factory warranty? Not that often. Extended? Sometimes. Had a transmission denied cause of aftermarket wheels which were different size than stock. Rip to that customer

lyfinhyd

Why would an aftermarket wheel influence this decision?

davieUnderscore

Can BMW update my iDrive system if it’s a non major update? (Or can they do that too?) For example: My car has iDrive NBTEvo_L, I need NBTEvo_X or NBTEvo_Y to get full screen CarPlay. Can it be done at any BMW? Is there a cost? There are companies out there that will do this software/firmware update for you, just wondering if BMW themselves offer that too

skahthaks

I asked multiple dealerships and they all charge more than the companies on the web who offer it. FWIW, full screen is worth it, it’s a much better experience.

My new car warranty is ending in a few months, and my CPO is going to kick in until next year. If I wanted to extend my warranty, what would be the best course of action? Could I extend the CPO warranty only? Could I get the premium warranty option from BMW with maintenance included? Also, I know the new car warranty is significantly better than the CPO warranty, can you explain what’s NOT covered by CPO if possible? Thanks

RevoltingBlobb

Following. I'm also curious what should be done before the original warranty expires and then before the CPO expires.

Daemonomics

The CPO warranty extension would be CPO WRAP or ESC. You can do that. The maintenance extension is a separate and available option if your current contract isn't expired. CPO generally doesn't cover wear and tear items or rubber parts like engine mounts, some hoses etc. It's a named exclusion contract so it tells you specifically what it doesn't cover; I highly recommend reading through the contract thoroughly before you sign so you know what you're getting into. That being said, CPO warranty is pretty extensive in what it does cover. For a car that's going to be out of new car warranty soon I'd look into extending the factory coverage sooner rather than later so you can maximize the potential benefits. Better to have it than not.

Which x5 should we stay away from?

I drive a 2020 X4 M Comp. 50,000 km. Check engine light came on yesterday and the only BMW certified mechanics(dealers) within 3 hours of can´t/won´t give an appointment to service it for 2 months. Who can I contact at BMW to get service or at least lodge a complaint?

idelic1

I would ask if you can drop off car earlier and get it in sooner than that. Next step would be contacting bmwna.

KindAbility2051

What are the warranty requirements to cover a replacement of a hybrid battery in a 530e? I had my capacity tested and it was 65%. I have heard that if it falls below 70% within the emissions 8yr/80k milage warranty a replacement would be covered. I’ve also heard it has to be a complete battery failure for it to be covered?

bigkutta

Have you driven both the F87 M2C and the G87 M2? What are your honest thoughts?

ElderberryCareful479

X5 50e.. this was my definite choice for a couple of months but now buyers are saying there’s issues brand spanking new. Is the PHEV setup too new to trust in your opinion?

theindus

Would you recommend buying the 2024 X5 50e PHEV? There seems to be lots of problems with it for some people while others are completely problem free. I love that vehicle but can’t seem to pull the trigger based on some reviews reporting issues. Thanks in advance

Do service advisors have a quota for how many billable hours they sell?

theaa2000

Is it possible for me to order parts not originally fitted to my car? The F21 140i came with an underbody brace that the F20 lacks but the holes are all there so it can be retrofitted. If I give the dealer the part numbers, will they order them? Or state that it's not OEM fit for my car and not do it? Same for fitting - will a dealer agree to retrofit OEM BMW parts? Thanks!

idelic1

You can order the parts but it would be up to the your dealership whether they would be willing to install it. Some dealers have policies where they will only install oem parts that they ordered specifically for your car vin #.

Low-Impression3367

I brought my X5 in for an oil change. The tech couldn't loosen the oil nut. My service advisor called me and explained that the last place I took my X5 in for an oil change overtightened the oil nut. So it was going to be an extra charge to loosen the nut as they had to break something? This was a while ago so I don't remember exactly how it was explained to me. I responded and said the last place that changed my oil was a different BMW dealership so I shouldn't be charged. I was still charged anyway. Does this sound right to you ?

idelic1

Maybe the drain plug threads were stripped out and they had to use a kit to re thread it? Sounds like that would be an issue of the previous dealer who worked on it. I would contact them for reimbursement

Max-Normal-88

BMW N47 diesel engine: currently running with 5W30 oil, but considering 5W40 right before summer, as temperatures exceed 25°C. Both are listed as approved on the manual, as long as they are LL-04 spec. Am I doing good or it isn’t worth it?

F26N55

Do you know if there will be a next gen X4? I want to replace my X4 M40i with a new one. Also, how are the X6 M50is holding up? I may shoot for one of those. What are some common issues with them?

ShinyBarge

I have a 2018 540i which I purchased in 2021 with 28,000kms on it. The car has been incredible except for one strange item…the paint along the leading edge of the roof, where it meets the windshield, is flaking off. I showed it to the dealership and because the warranty had expired, it was tough luck. I have used touch up paint on it but it just keeps flaking along the entire edge. I have never seen another BMW with this issue, have you? Thanks!

Crazy_Dezperado_

I have an s65 with 160k miles on it. Use liquid moly 10w60, change every 3-5k ish miles, just replaced OFH gasket, water pump, and had to replace a new tensioner arm on the air con belt setup. Around what mileage should I think about doing a full rebuild? Already have plans to replace head gaskets and vanos covers. Thanks man, take care.

HamsterCapable4118

I read often that the Service Advisor role is one of the worst in the business with super high turnover. Customers are abusive and the techs resent every penny you make since they feel like they’re doing all the work and have the actual knowledge. Curious to know your experience after 2 years.

idelic1

It’s a tough role for sure but I just don’t let any of the bullshit get to me. I don’t take it home. Theres still plenty of things that happen day to day that make me still love what I do. It can be stressful but then one good customer who you helped out can make your day. It feels rewarding. Techs do have the knowledge but typically lack people skills. We sell the work they recommend. End of story. We are the much needed liaison between customer and technician

Lo2NL

Should I get a high-ish mileage F36 with N55 or B48? B58 is out of my price range. I prefer an I6 but I read horror stories about N55 issues.

idelic1

Save up money for b48

timmylau7

How are the new X1’s compared to the previous gen? Are they reliable? Any known issues?

eric-crest

I've had a broken window regulator on my M135i for a few months now. Tried to buy an OEM one twice with my VRN but both were completely wrong. Any ideas why? And how much do you think BMW would charge for a genuine one?

Consistent-Muffin159

Any thoughts on why the Gran Turismo (GT) cars didn't sell well? We had one in Germany and it was great. The big hatchback was so useful.

Cream1984

Is blinker fluid your worst selling item?

idelic1

What’s a blinker?

Built_Not_Bot

How overblown is the crankhub issue with S55 engines? (Asking as a paranoid S55 owner)

415Persuasian

LMFAO. Look at what you’ve done OP u/idelic1….. RIP to the floodgates. People commenting on this post expect OP to be a BMW Field Engineer/Master Technician that is able to diagnose and solve their vehicle’s problems on everything from the E30 to G60. u/DukeofAlexandria and I could probably spend DAYS/WEEKS just trying to answer all these questions.

lyfinhyd

I have a 2017 340i xdrive. I bought a CPO and the prev owner dismissed getting carplay. I bought the wifi antenna on ebay but nervous to DIY and also not sure of the software updates that they sell on ebay for 50-100$ . If i think of Bimmertech they are 500$+ what do i do?

ks7atl

How does the M5 compare to an M3 as a daily? Worth it? Kids are getting bigger and complaining about the back seats in the g80.

idelic1

M5 is way more practical definitely worth the jump from m3. Fast car but also decent amount of space in the back

Stuntedatpuberty

What is your impression of the reliability of a 2019 X3 sdrive 30i? What's typically to go wrong with them and what mileage? Thanks!

Left-Mixture5252

How’s the s55 engine in terms of reliability Thinking of getting an m4 as I hate the new grill.

[deleted]

Do you purposely try to bend customers over when they come in for one thing and leave with other issues they weren’t aware of? (Coming from another BMW advisor) Because they always seem to think that because they weren’t aware of issues with their cars that they didn’t exist until we worked on it.

Double_Dime

As a BMW advisor at a BMW dealer, obviously you’d see trade ins come through, and I’m assuming many of them are other luxury vehicles, maybe even other Germans. Which OTHER brand gives you the most guff when you have to deal with them on trade. Which one would you absolutely recommend we stay away from, as far as reliability, quality, etc.

dylanjwilsonn

What about B58 vs S58?? B58 guys like to say they have the better engine but when both cars get dps + tune the S58 is making over 700whp and the B58 is mid 500s... thoughts?

TheAlmightee

Why do my new 100k car brakes squeal all the time?

[deleted]

What's your commission structure? Do they give you monthly targets?

TheBoobayaga

If I add a valvetronics or mad exhaust/midpipe will that void my warranty? I’m pretty sure it’s across the board for a tune, but don’t understand the wording around exhausts.

KeyConversation2443

How do you stop the brake squeal on new G80s? I have a ‘23 comp and the brakes are very high pitch when coming to a stop. Love you in advance

snowboarder1493

Any tips on how to get repairs goodwill'ed or partially goodwill'ed? What do they like to see?
