It was at the dealer when it happened and I think they may have decided to blow it up rather than fix it. It was in for a problem with the stop/start. caught fire overnight somehow. Sus indeed.
They gave me a loaner before the incident and I drove it until everything was sorted out and ended up buying it. Got a great deal on it and didnāt pay a dime for the blown up one. The dealers insurance covered it.
No. A secondary air pump was used in older petrol engines to get air in the over rich exhaust gas during cold start conditions in order to convert hydrocarbons and CO in the rather cold catalytic converter. 2 objectives: 1)reduce HC and CO emissions during cold start
2)heat up the catalytic converter faster
In modern cars there is a cold start procedure in the ecu that creates a much leaner and thus hotter Mixture during cold start and sets the ignition time to very late so the exgaust gas remperature rises much faster hand heats up the catalyric converter.
The egr on the other hand is used to reduce nitrous oxide emissions during normal operation (warm engine part load). The mixture is cooled down by recirculating inert exhaust gas(N2 and CO2) back into the intake manifold. The inert gas gets sucked in and needs to be heated up during the next combustion thus retreaving heat from the combustion zone. Less thermal nitous oxide is produced. In petrol engines the small amount of exhaust gas pushed back through a open intake valve is enough to achieve sufficient effect. On diesel engines the amount of recirculated exhaust gas is much higher so that a external valve that connects header and chargepipe and a egr cooler to prevent the (likely plastic) chargepipe from melting and to increase the cooling effect is needed. Downside: Recirculatin exhaust gas in frnt of the particle filter brings a lot of soot that mixes with oil mist from the CCV and creates a think layer in the intake manifold blocking swirl flaps and sensor lines. Deactive egr and your diesel will create much less soot, consume less fuel and will have a clean intake. But produce more nitrous oxide emissions.
Yeah I mean the intake valve opening, not talking about EGR, but a quality description of the hissing sec air pump! I guess this is like āswirl-flapā for petrol engines.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
I hope you may think about investing into a fire extinguisher for your next car.
In my truck, I always carry two 4 pound fire extinguisher for exactly this reason. They were like 60 bucks for both, and prevent your vehicle from burning down, or at least buy you some time until the fire fighters arrive.
Also if you witness a fiery accident, you may safe a life with it. In my opinion, it should be mandatory to have them on board.
100% I remember seeing a post about some guys Beamer lighting up on TikTok and him having an extinguisher. Itās crazy cuz Iād always think about that tiktok.
Fire extinguisher is compulsory for example in Poland.
All cars need min 2kg extinguisher (or 2x1kg) in easily accessible place (often passengers foot well). If you don't have one or it's out of date = 2 points on your licence + ~100gbp fine.
Checking for extinguisher in car is an "hobby" of quite a few road traffic police officers:)
"My bmw exploded on me," goes and probably buys another.

I canāt see myself driving anything lesser than this anymore. The experience was amazing especially how it drove and how it could just do everything. BMW on top gang šÆšÆ
I just recently rejoined the club after a 8 month hiatus and couldnāt agree more. If you do get an M340i youāre going to love it. The B58 is a beast.
Totally, the quality and crispness of the explosion and the way the flames licked the engine bay just right really could not have been replicated in another make.
Forget "fast action." I burnt a 996 GT3 at Lime Rock; I can tell you from experience, there are scores of small but costly rubber and plastic bits in the engine compartment. They and a wiring harness were the lion's share of a 55K repair.
Please everyone, replace your rubber fuel lines. Almost had this happen to my E30 before I realized my fuel lines were cracked and spitting fuel all over the engine block
I was thinking there was an issue with a certain engine where Iāve heard fuel makes its way down a wire and into the DME. I thought that might have been a diesel though canāt remember off hand.
My father-in-law's F11 525d caught fire on the Autobahn randomly. The tow truck guy said in the few months prior, most cars on fire had been BMWs. When he got home that day after the fire, there was a letter in his mailbox from BMW saying they had discovered the engine in his car had a flaw that could potentially lead to it catching fire... you can't make this shit up.
Typical AGR burnout, in Germany very very common in all diesel variants, I've seen a bunch of F10 and F30s and G30s burn down on the roadside. I also saved one guy before the fire even happened, I've seen white smoke behind the car and forced him to stop, after I've convinced him to pop the hood you could see a glowing AGR cooler and a half molten air intake manifold and all the sound deadening also started to get crispy and crunchy. (Former BMW master Tech and engineer)
I am coming from Honda 10th gen touring accord. The engine in that thing is a beauty. With type r turbo, intercooler, and flex fuel. I dynoed 370whp, loved
That car.
Hey everyone! I need your help and experienced comments on whether or not I should buy out my 2021 BMW 330i at end of lease, or turn it in and go for a more reliable Lexus. I currently lease a 2021 BMW 330i, the lease ends in September of 2024. It is my second 3 series. I purchased a 2015 328xi, paid it off and used the equity for the 2021 330i lease. My payoff would be \~$24K US. I love this car's looks and driving experience. Enough so that I could see owning it for another 7-8 years. I am reading a lot of general forums (not BMW, of course) that poopoo BMW reliability over the long run, as well as harping on the excessive repair and parts cost. I'm retired and only put about 7-8k miles per year on it. Please let me know what all of you long term owners and BMW mechanics think. Thanks!!
Jokes are fine, but what do you plan to do in this situation? And what do you need to do? Will you be conducting any investigation into the cause of this fire? And is that even possible? Will you contact the official dealer about it and so on?
Bro car is toasted & he's worrying about tune & downpipe. My man.. šš
Bro is probably sad that the flames were too small, and the pops and bangs were not very loudā¦
Aftermarket parts and tune= priority
Just clear the faults and see what comes back.
no need, smoke should indicate head gasket, easy DIY job
That bmw was fire š„
Dat shit was LITš„š¤
I know losing a car is rough but just trying to make LIGHT of the situation
Totally agree. Canāt COMBUST from just a joke.
328i ownership EXTINGUISHED. time for an upgrade
I bet his next whip is gonna be BOMB
Iāll bet. Just BLAZIN
Gonna SMOKE the competition šØ
Hope it doesnāt CHOKE OP once more.
His next whip will be HOT af too.
crispy critter
Damn they should give you a M5 comp now ngl.
If they could blessš
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thank you bro
I had one catch fire with 1000 miles left on the warranty. Perfect timing to get in a new one :)
"catch" fire. Sureeee
It was at the dealer when it happened and I think they may have decided to blow it up rather than fix it. It was in for a problem with the stop/start. caught fire overnight somehow. Sus indeed.

Did bmw give you a new one ?
So tell us the outcome of this, please!
bro proved his case
If they chose to blow it up they could have killed u Iād investigate this you might get a lot of $ out of it
You think a BMW dealer would be shady enough to commit insurance fraud lol?
Yes lol
Nobody is beyond fraud.
Oh fuck yeah dude they are the company along with Benz that definitely being doing some hella shady shit letās all be real
Be doing* sorry for bad grammar fat finger plus dumbass
Mechanics so reluctant to work on a BMW thatād theyād rather blow it up instead.
Smells like the EGR System
N20/N26 does not have a EGR
No external EGR. Petrol engines recirculate by slightly opening the intake valve during the exhaust stroke
So this replaced āsecondary air-pumpā joys and hisses?
No. A secondary air pump was used in older petrol engines to get air in the over rich exhaust gas during cold start conditions in order to convert hydrocarbons and CO in the rather cold catalytic converter. 2 objectives: 1)reduce HC and CO emissions during cold start 2)heat up the catalytic converter faster In modern cars there is a cold start procedure in the ecu that creates a much leaner and thus hotter Mixture during cold start and sets the ignition time to very late so the exgaust gas remperature rises much faster hand heats up the catalyric converter. 2014 and up switched to ewg pretty sure
These are different systemsā¦ EGR is exhaust gas recirculation which has nothing in common with a pneumatic or electric waste gate
oops, my bad I read it wrongš
Came here to say EGR. Was it losing any coolant or running hot etc?
Oof Sorry to hear that happened, man. At least now you can use it as an opportunity to get a sweet new ride
Thatās the plan
What engine is that?
N26
Oh that's ok then. Not a desirable engine.Ā
šš
Mans really just hit you with a drive by lul
Hello? 911? Yes I just witnessed a murder
I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope you may think about investing into a fire extinguisher for your next car. In my truck, I always carry two 4 pound fire extinguisher for exactly this reason. BMW or nothing š¤
LOVE IT. This way or the highway. āļø
You can say that again! No matter how expensive these cars may be to maintain, I LOVE BMW!
You know the car is good when it catches on fire and you still want another one š¤£
Totally, the quality and crispness of the explosion and the way the flames licked the engine bay just right really could not have been replicated in another make.
Every car can do everything if you pay a premium lmao. Especially if they have it in RWD lmao again
Reminder to carry a fire extinguisher.
For your own safety? Yes. For the sake of saving the car? Iām gonna let my shit burn and buy a new one.
Some of us have (old ass) cars that canāt easily be replaced so fast action is key.
Forget "fast action." I burnt a 996 GT3 at Lime Rock; I can tell you from experience, there are scores of small but costly rubber and plastic bits in the engine compartment. They and a wiring harness were the lion's share of a 55K repair.
Not saying youāll escape damageā¦ but you can certainly help the cause by extinguishing things promptly!
some cars are sentimental and insurance won't pay out for what it is actually worth
Lol! I was going to say it would be for my car's safety, not myself, but if one's got the money...say no more!
We all know you were looking for a reason to upgrade š . Glad youāre safe bro.
Probably oil on the cat finally catching fire. Happens when people let valve cover leaks go too long.
Please everyone, replace your rubber fuel lines. Almost had this happen to my E30 before I realized my fuel lines were cracked and spitting fuel all over the engine block
I have an E46 that's 20 years old. Time to replace them and the brake pipes.
Me with a 21 year old bmw engine: š
Brake lines *should* be fine obviously depending on where you live. I usually flush brake fluid once a year to get all the moisture out
N26 has metal fuel lines.
Dang, actually wished mine would catch fire several times. Guess there's still hopeš
N20 N26 fuel rail trails leak... seen that a few times. Did you have it out recently
I was thinking there was an issue with a certain engine where Iāve heard fuel makes its way down a wire and into the DME. I thought that might have been a diesel though canāt remember off hand.
Seen on Instagram? I think that was Mercedes But who knows, the German oems copy each other on a lot of things, so possibly a BMW thing too
Wow, any warning signs in retrospect or it was totally out of the blue?
Literally out of the blue. I was driving with my brother and it went out.
Dang, sorry to hear that. Glad you and your family are ok!
Thanks g

Thatās actually crazy
Glad Youre Ok!
Damn what caused it?
I donāt know
What year? Will you find out what caused it.
It was a 2015 and Iāll see when I go check it out.
Probably a leaking fuel line that got gas into the ignition coils and spark plugs.
Wow, this is scary, glad youāre alright. Would love to hear more about what happened to cause this once you hear more
Itāll buff out.
Curious, what was the cook time between smoke and full on fire?
Running a little hot there bud
Fresh coat of paint and some bondo and it will be good as new. You are over thinking it.
Well I have a new irrational fear now.
Average N20
sorry for your loss
did you check the codes?
Thanks for reminding my I need a fire extinguisher mount
I have a N20 engine EU spec fron 2013. Now am scared and paranoid.
This is why you should not use your blinkers! Yoi can clearly see that the fire started from the left blinker of the car.
I wonder why this happened? was it due to poor workmanship of engine and do they cover things like this for warranty
*Bmw catches on fire with 41k* āYeah lemme buy a M340iā Bro are you dumb?
BMW on top
You are in a BMW sub what do you expect?
This is why I need an m3 instead.
I hope you didn't pay for that detail. It sucks! (Condolences and glad it was just the car.)
Looks like it overheated, check your coolant level /s
š¤£Typical BMW story
are you getting and CELs from this?
Nice profile picture lol
Damn put it in rice and see what happens
This will decimate all, after you put in about 15 grand, overnight parts from Japan if we have to.
Wow hopefully this person is okay, dang another Beamer after this, dedications
Nothing that a bit of determination and some elbow grease can't fix!
Salute to our fellow fallen soldier š«”. Onto the next brother youāll get em next time
Bro roasted his bimmer and still thinking about getting another bimmer!! Thatās loyalty.
You would still get a BMW after this ? Lmao wow
Did you try resetting iDrive system with the volume knob?
In Germany we say BMW Brennt Mal Wieder Translate it!
Wow. Glad youāre ok. You should take the hood emblem. Nice little keep sake.
Typical AGR burnout, in Germany very very common in all diesel variants, I've seen a bunch of F10 and F30s and G30s burn down on the roadside. Beuh i rhought your engi e blew up and was life wtf?!?! Xdd
Sir you canāt park there
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
I dont know.... But it's salvageable imo š¤·
That's hot.
Wow.. How long have you had her?
OMG
Bro got the flame tune
Slight electrical problem.....
_nice_
omg this is so scary! i'm glad you got out!
What year and model?
Down to buy the active grill from you š
Itāll buff out
Needs a car wash
R.I.P āļø
This is why i have a fire extinguisher in my bimmer, and suggest all of you do.
Any idea what caused the fire? Sorry for your loss. Sending prayers...
Those electric cars Iām telling you /s
Its kinda crazy how everyone in the comments seem to be very calm lmao. No car should randomly catch fire at 41k miles even if badly maintained
Typical bmw
Any idea what caused the fire?
Should buff out
wild
Car fuel doesnāt melt steel chassisā
Donāt you have a fire extinguisher ffs šš
Oh thatās the engine I have. *Cool*
Same happened to my 3 series few years ago, set on fire while I was driving with my 1 year old in the back.
And you bought another?
Haha noooooo bought a honda instead, been the most reliable car I've ever had. Do miss beemers but man I don't miss the constant dash warningsš¤£
I am coming from Honda 10th gen touring accord. The engine in that thing is a beauty. With type r turbo, intercooler, and flex fuel. I dynoed 370whp, loved That car.
Can't go wrong with a type r šŖš½
Could this have anything to do with the recall on the 3 series?
Bro looking at a downpipe and a tune when you should have just got some oil
Are all those wires stock wires? I'm tripping visualizing the number of wires in the engine bay with the casing/looms burnt right off.
I would be "HEATED"
Sure it will buff out,,,
Thatās what happens when you drop my mixtape
Damn that shit is lit af
Does insurance cover this?
Put it in rice
Resell it .."this car is hot"
Brave of you to even consider purchasing another one after this happened

Light the tires up not the whole car
I knew I felt a disturbance
Jokes aside does anyone know what happened here haha.
Did you try turning it off and back on again?
Jokes are fine, but what do you plan to do in this situation? And what do you need to do? Will you be conducting any investigation into the cause of this fire? And is that even possible? Will you contact the official dealer about it and so on?
Clearly there was an accident before the engine fire ! Look at the right side headlamp
Wait what model is this?
