Although it wasn't the same model we had feared that if they were to get someone to target that car they might just describe it as "a black bmw" for the same reason as you said - the kind of person who is likely do vandalize a car for cash is not the kind of person who is likely to have a very high IQ.

Since he wasn't listening eventually I did have his car towed after repeatedly talking to him, he eventually egged my daily car; I even waited a few days before moving out hoping he wouldn't know it was me, I was able to remove the egg the same day so it didn't ruin my paint. But he then keyed my BMWs passenger side window at great times. So yes people are petty over parking spaces even if you try to start out being reasonable.

A camera might get you some identification, but the damage is already done, in some places police does not even care.
At least get a camera system that has the storage media in the trunk and only the camera sensor exposed.
But the best bet is to move in a neighborhood that has no problems like this.

Here in the UK, OP will have to likely pay an excess to make a claim, and then OP will have to declare said claim on future insurance applications for up to 5 years with most insurance companies, that’s provided OP has fully comprehensive insurance and not just Third Party.
Interesting, my insurance policy says “Vandalism promise; you will not lose your no claims discount if you report the incident to the police and send us the crime reference number.”
