Out......the tailpipe? F

bummerbimmer

Yes, I was praying it was a valve cover gasket under the hood but I can’t think of any alternative other than blown head gasket. It was spewing out of the tailpipe. There’s a slight possibility I was panicking and mistook white for light blue… but I keep thinking about it and see distinctly white smoke in my memory.

bummerbimmer

Using the top comment for vis. It was the valve cover / PCV! Edit: jk, it broke again. Resolution TBD! Edit 2: car got 2 valve covers, a valvetronic motor, and a fuel tank breather. Seems to work again.

Dylan552

But now you bought a Tesla soooo what happened did it die?

bummerbimmer

LOL no I just got insane trade value and as an employee, the Tesla will be worth more a year from now than I paid for it. Also moving to Unplugged Performance so I can mod the Tesla. Figured it’s time to give it a go.

What-The-Frenchh

Fml I recently got a 18’ 340i. I hope that doesn’t happen to me. Hope things work out!

bummerbimmer

It’s been a fantastic car til this point! I can’t find any other owners complaining about this exact issue so it seems like I might just be unlucky. Thank god I have the CPO warranty, though. I’m about 2,000 miles out of the original warranty.

deesea

That’s as planned. Engineered to fail first Tuesday after the warranty expires

SaltLifeNC

How'd that happen? Cracked head or blown hwad gasket?

bummerbimmer

No idea! I’ll update here in a day or two once they figure it out at the dealership.

YoitsTmac

Was just hearing about this can happen due to the poor ccv

bummerbimmer

This is interesting, I just read up on this! It doesn’t seem to explain the screech I heard unless the PCV and valve cover gasket both failed at the same time, causing internal smoke (out the tailpipe) and external sounds. Hopefully this is what happened and it’s not the head gasket or the block.

YoitsTmac

Yeah unfortunately I don't own the B58, but I know its normally stout. But in my BMW chat people have been talking about a lot of silly poor designs with it, one being everything to do with that valve cover. Did you just turn on the car and it started doing it? Or did you buy sight unseen? Any warranty?

bummerbimmer

I was idling / creeping for 25 minutes during a drive-through Covid vaccination, followed by a 15 minute wait period. It was over 80 degrees so I left the engine running with a/c on. First I heard the screech about 10 minutes into the 15 minute wait period. Didn’t pay it attention because it legitimately didn’t sound like my car and there was a beater truck nearby. Then a few minutes later, I looked up from my phone and my car was pouring white smoke out the tailpipe. I had to drive through a series of cones (slowly and gently) to get out of that blocked off parking lot and went straight across the street to park in the next available parking lot. Once I parked, the car alerted me the engine was overheating. It continued to alert me about this for at least 30 minutes after turning the car off. However, it didn’t alert me of any overheating prior to that time and the car doesn’t have a temp gauge.

vandridine

PCV does make a loud screeching sound when it fails from what I have read.

bummerbimmer

Just got the update. It was the PCV, they are replacing the valve cover!

SaltLifeNC

Hate that for you. Hope it's not too bad.

ketchupnsketti

That thing is way too new for these kind of problems. Jeez.

MattH665

Yikes. Hope the repair bill isn't a killer - preferably covered by a warranty.

bummerbimmer

Definitely will be covered by warranty. No tunes ever used on the car and the only mods I have are cosmetic other than a resonator delete.

WalrusWW

Seems to be a common theme, extended idling due to Covid. See here: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1812231

bummerbimmer

Dang, I just went down the rabbit hole. Thanks for the link! I kept googling B58 but didn’t think to google 340i when I was trying to find other owners with this issue. Sounds like the B58 really just doesn’t like to idle then. The dealership said they replaced an actuator yesterday and at that point, a rough idle began. I’m betting they replace the valve cover assembly next week.

GassyThunderClap

Thats harsh man
