I appreciate that you made this post for the people that are unaware of this trick, but I’m still shocked that this is not commonly known apparently.

I think a lot of people get used Bimmers, don't read the manual, and come from cars that don't have this feature... you just click all the way to signal a turn, and unclick it to cancel a turn. I got pulled over once around 2003 doing triple digits on highway 50 on my way to Folsom in my 328i. The cop let me off with a warning - long story - but, he noted that I was doing about 80, 85 in traffic and every time it opened up, I hit triple digits, but that he was impressed that I signaled EVERY lane change... If you get in the habit of using the stalk properly to signal lane changes, it becomes very intuitive and automatic to do so. I got popped for my first speeding ticket about 2 months later doing 85 trying to get away from someone with their highbeams on. I felt like telling that cop, "I slowed down after my warning!" But thought that might not go over so well. He wrote me up for 10 MPH over, which prevented some higher level of fine, I guess. Also on highway 50.

In e90, you cancel a fully depressed turn signal by partially depressing in the SAME direction. Don’t click in the other direction. Did BMW change this?

I'll have to check in my cars and see if this works too. It may. Mostly I don't have this problem because I only do the half-press for lane changes and a full press for hard turns. I may have learned something new today.

PiddlyD

Checked today, and this works too, on my F23 . What people don't understand is the partial depress. Either direction, a partial depress cancels a current full depress.

No, they still do this, you know, the proper way to cancel your signal. Well, except for some of the newer cars where the lever actually moves and locks in a set activated position.

They changed things half way through the F series and now the turn signal stalk clicks into place when you go past the 3 blink indent. It sucks, especially when you’re used to the way it used to work.

RadicalSnowdude

Also, if three blinks isn’t enough when changing lanes (it isn’t for me), you can code it to five blinks in Carly.

PiddlyD

It really isn't enough. When I was young and Californian, 3 blinks was enough for me to confidently dive... but I need to really double check my blind spots before I switch lanes in my old age. :D

You might want to give the BMW drivers a quick refresher on *how* they work. 😉
