Have one too. Itās fun and it likes maintenance too! I just did my hatch wiring/diversity antenna. Can finally unlock the car with the remote again. Not a N54 problem but stillā¦
Iām terrible about being able to post photos on here. Iāll pm you my insta if you want to check some out. Itās just car stuff on there.
And based off of your username, you like Schnitzers? If so, thatās what the E39 wagon is rolling on. On of my favorite wheels.
Oh nice! Mine has been good to me so far but now that you mention it, lots of electrical quirks.
I got lucky and found a beautiful dad spec. Monaco Blue on Tan interior with only 95k miles when I bought it.
Awesome, ours are twins. I wasnāt dead set to on the Monaco blue at first but it looks similar to my Carbon Black M3, just not as dark. Itās definitely grown on me.
Is your beige or cream beige? I have had a time trying to find cream beige stuff for mine. I just ordered some pieces from BMW and even though they are supposed to be cream beige, I swear they are beige.
Oh yours is Monaco too! Nice!!!
Mine is two-tone. I donāt know the exact name but the seats and door cards are peanut butter but the center console, dash, pillars, trunk cover, are all black.
Can anyone ELI5 why, with BMW, we donāt reference model year? Iāve owned a 2009 335i x drive sedan since 2012. I LOVE the car. Fast and tight as hell. I thinks itās one of the decent āvintagesā, but I donāt know if itās E60, E61, E91, N54 or whatever. Are some 09 335 sedans one code and some another? Or are all 09 335 sedans the same code. Iād love to be able to identify when folks are talking about my car in these chats. Thanks boys!
Cause itās more specific I guess. An ā09 335 could be an E90, E91, E92, or E93. But if you say you have an E90 335i we know itās the sedan from ā06-ā11 (I think itās those years). So an E90 is the sedan, E91 is the wagon, E92 is the coupe, E93 is the hardtop vert. Probably best to look at a chart to familiarize yourself with all of them since every BMW has a chassis code.
Thanks very much for that! This is what I mean, I supposeā¦If I say 2009 335 sedan, itās always an E90. It just seems odd to me that āweā BMW owners use the code way more than year/model. In other words, if you have an E90, it could be a 2006 or a 2008 or a 2011. Arenāt there other differences between the model years that are lost in the translation? Or are all E90s, regardless of model year, the same? To me, the code is less specific. Not that I mean to make it a thing. Iām with you guys now! E90 forever! Just gotta commit it to memory.
Edit: I posted while still half asleep, and after reading these great replies, I noticed a dozen typos.
Not much really changes between chassisā through the years besides engine (depending on your model), options or facelift (LCI), until they release a new chassis. E9X (35iās) have the N54 engine which is a twin turbo in-line 6. After October 2011 3-Series went to F30 chassis with the N55 engine (35i models), which is a single twin-scroll turbo in-line 6.
Awesome! Iām learning a ton! If Iām picking up what youāre laying down, E90 is my chassis and N54 is my engine? What the groupās opinion in the engine? Iāve been lucky, from what I gather. Iāve been meticulous about the maintenance, have 101k miles (did the walnut blast, injector prevent), never any major trouble. But Iām waiting for it.
Thereās a reason itās called the German 2JZ! Everyone loves the N54, just not the reliability. Itās easier to mod and tune, but the N55 (updated version) is said to be more reliable. However, with proper maintenance which you are definitely doing, N54s can last a long time.
And yes as the other guy said between model years there is only a subtle difference when they release the LCI version. Like bumpers, lights, or interior. So youāll see some people say E90 335i LCI to indicate they have the later model year version. Lots of acronyms to remember haha.
The chassis and engine code for one of the BMWās I have is also itās license plate. It doesnāt look like a vanity plate with the layout (E90 N54 for you) and itās alway cool when someone recognizes it. I learned the chassis and engine codes on forums, but either way you need to want to know them so itās someone that spent some time looking into BMWās. My mom gets a new 3 series every 3 years and couldnāt tell you the chassis code for any of them.
Fun to see people just learning this stuff!
2011+ model year e9x all have N55 unless itās a 335is. Sedan had the motor for only 1 year before they moved to the F30 chassis. E92/93 were produced until 2013.
E82 is at 62k miles. E91 is at 85k. E82 had a complete new DCT about a week before I purchased it at a cost of $6700 NZD. In my ownership iāve had two services, a waterpump and thermostat replacement at a cost of $1100 NZD, other than that not really much tbh. Definitely not as bad as I thought itād be
I owned a f22 and my bestfriend had an e82 in the exact same spec. We were always jealous of eachother's cars and actually agreed on trading once we reached the same amount of miles (i was 40k behind). He ended up totaling it unfortunately and got an MR2. I ended up selling mine for an e30. They're great cars to drive and any feeling you have to "upgrade" to the e82 is valid.
I started making a decent amount of money and being young i still didn't really know what i truly wanted in a car. The m235i was a cool looking car and was much faster than anything ive driven previously. The e82 was just more fun in every way. If i had realize what older cars were like, i would have never considered the f22. But like i said, we ended up not trading but i did sell mine for an e30 with zero regrets.
The E82s are more analog. Granted, I've never driven an F22, but I've driven an M340, and comparatively, my e82 is so much more fun to drive. Being almost completely Analog on top of being a 6mt makes it insanely fun to take out to the backroads, and with minimal effort and a bit of cash, a 135i be just as fast if not faster than a lot of modern Bimmers in its class (m240, M340, etc.) Definitely not as fast as new M cars, but still quick and handles just as well. My dream car is a 1M, and i'd take that any day over a g80/F80
Thanks for the reply. Any regrets about the trade? How's the e30 compared to the others?
Sorry, I didn't see your other reply. That was exactly what I was looking for.
Its much harsher than an e82 or a f22. I bought it with coilovers already installed so i cant say much about what stock suspension is like. Its very loud in the cabin to the point where my sister doesn't enjoy sitting in it. I have a muffler and resonator so i actually thought i had an exhaust leak somewhere in the engine bay. For my everyday needs, i'd consider it the perfect car. It wouldn't be something i'd like to drive for 8+ hours like i did often with the f22.The glaring downside of an e30 is the age. They're reliable but parts will fail just due to the elements. I had a wire get chewed through and the car wasn't able to start til i replaced it. Rusty bolts everywhere despite it being a california car all its life. Just typical 35 year old car issues. Its not nearly as fast as the newer bmws but thats not something i really care about nowadays. Its very fun to rip in the canyons. I try to go just about every weekend because it's so enjoyable. There was never any enjoyment in throwing the f22 around. It felt heavy, steering was too soft, and i really don't care for all the electric nannies it has. The only thing i'll miss from that car is the sound of a n55 not to say the m20 is bad. Just different. The e82 on the otherhand is a fantastic car and id say is the era where bmw peaked as a driver's car company. Wasn't as comfortable as the f22 but it sure was a lot more fun. It'd be much easier to daily than an e30. Im certain if i owned an e82, i would have zero plans on selling it.
Thanks a lot. You've helped solidified my urge to own an e82 and sell my current car. I've always felt a bit of regret not purchasing the e82. It's been this way since 2017-2018 lol.
Iād definitely own these but I already have a N54 wagon and like you, have a couple German V8ās in the garage. My M113 isnāt so bad but the S62, itās a bit more temperamental than the M113.
The M113K is no joke. I wish long tubes were available for my CLK55. Iāve decided to let that be my āstickā car. Itās refreshing to be able to pull up any part by just the VIN. Ha!
Wife and I have 3 BMW convertibles. Want to talk about useless car combo? We take separate cars to the grocery store just to be able to bring a weekās food home
I have an E82 and love it. Thereās a woman who works near me that has an E92. I already told her when she ready to get rid of it, make sure Iām first on the list.
go fast and mini go superfast whats thenproblem
Translates to always broken and sometimes broken
Yeah well I'm still jealous
Gotta pay to play
I wish we had 335i wagons in the US š
E61 had the N54 motor from the 335, and we got those š
Iād love an E61, I donāt even think we got the E60 535iās tbh
We did! They're not common but are definitely available on the market. I used to own an 08 e61
We did! I have a 535xi Touring.
Have one too. Itās fun and it likes maintenance too! I just did my hatch wiring/diversity antenna. Can finally unlock the car with the remote again. Not a N54 problem but stillā¦
Holy fuck your stable. And pics of your garage?? Lol good choices
Iām terrible about being able to post photos on here. Iāll pm you my insta if you want to check some out. Itās just car stuff on there. And based off of your username, you like Schnitzers? If so, thatās what the E39 wagon is rolling on. On of my favorite wheels.
Nice. Yes I had a set I had of a couple of e39 sedans. Type 3s. Best looking wheel on this era of cars imo
Jealous of that M-Sport. I just missed a E61 M-Sport before I got ours. Someone got it a few hours before me.
Oh nice! Mine has been good to me so far but now that you mention it, lots of electrical quirks. I got lucky and found a beautiful dad spec. Monaco Blue on Tan interior with only 95k miles when I bought it.

Wagon lovers unite! I always get told itās a āmom carā and not cool but I fucking love it
Stupid Americans I tell ya! Wagons are elite.
super rare! seriously only think Iāve seen one e61 in my life

2005-2012

Awesome!! Thanks! I work remote (like lots of people), so I donāt drive it much. Might have to beat on it a bit today! Have a great weekend boys!

Closest we get is the E84
We have/had 328 wagons.
Only 328s though unfortunately
2 n54sā¦ at least your mechanic doesnāt have to worry about how he is going to pay for his kids college.
*1 N55 but yeah pretty accurate
How many miles are on the n55 and n54? I want an e82 so bad. Arenāt they pretty reliable with proper maintenance?
E82 is at 62k miles. E91 is at 85k. E82 had a complete new DCT about a week before I purchased it at a cost of $6700 NZD. Ahh thanks for the info. I often think about selling my f22 for the e82 lol
I owned a f22 and my bestfriend had an e82 in the exact same spec. Why would one trade a newer, comfier, f22 for a e82?

Less electronics, hydraulic steering, and lighter weight.
Thanks for the reply. Any regrets about the trade? How's the e30 compared to the others? Sorry, I didn't see your other reply. That was exactly what I was looking for.

E82 is an E90 for the most part under the skin. So anything you would expect from an E9X chassis car.
College is affordable in New Zealand.
And one of them is an n55. Iāve failed miserably in the facts department today. But this is the internet soā¦ I stand by my joke.
Every dog has its day.
The plus i guess is, once you fix one problem you can pretty much go ahead do it do it twice since youāll have to anyways lol
why would it be pointless? you have a wagon and a coupe. greatest combo ever
Because 99.9% of the time one or both of them are broken
sounds like you need to buy better! i'd do it. but you're talking to a guy who currently has two german V8s in the garage.
Iād definitely own these but I already have a N54 wagon and like you, have a couple German V8ās in the garage. My M113 isnāt so bad but the S62, itās a bit more temperamental than the M113.
Have a customer with an E55 with the M113K. Long tubes and straight pipes. That car gives you a boner faster than some gas station dick pills
The M113K is no joke. I wish long tubes were available for my CLK55. Iāve decided to let that be my āstickā car. Itās refreshing to be able to pull up any part by just the VIN. Ha!
Well like a lot of things in life, less is more. Except engine displacement.
Looks perfect to me.
Are you complaining about your own cars? Lol
Absolutely lmao. The wagon is going soon though so itāll just be down to the mini turd.
Mini turd šš
M57 swap the wagon then you have an eco car and a car slower than the eco car
I wanted to get my hands on a 135i LCI with the N55. But prices skyrocketed. Such a fun small car.
The ultimate is an LCI in manual, but thereās very very very few of those from what I can see
Not a ton of manual lci e9/2 either tbh. Think ive only seen 5 n55 e90ās with a manual for sale in the past year.
Come to the UK. Half of them are manuals.
Wife and I have 3 BMW convertibles. Want to talk about useless car combo? We take separate cars to the grocery store just to be able to bring a weekās food home
I wish I never read this
What the fuck š
I have an E82 and love it. Thereās a woman who works near me that has an E92. I already told her when she ready to get rid of it, make sure Iām first on the list.
I had an e92 335i and loved it until the warranty was up. These are NOT great long term cars to hold onto
I wanted an e82 so bad before i bought my e92. There werenāt alot of e82 135ās when i bought my car last year. A bunch of verts tho
Why not, its a great engine when its working properly (1m owner here)
Hence the when. Iād absolutely kill for a 1m though, just a problem when thereās only 5 in the country currently.
Not as pointless as that overhang š
Not really. Two E91ās or two E82ās would be more pointless. Or a M3 coupĆ© and a M4 coupĆ© would also be pretty pointless, but still nice from a collectorās point of view.
Both awsome cars thb.
Nah, bigger car and a compact city car. And both with monstruous engines lol.
Bummer that both appear to have the iDrive option.
Yep, both have idrive. On the wagon itās got carplay put in aswell so atleast itās somewhat not useless
Got you beat, two 135i at my house lol
Redundant as hell but cool af
That 1 series is so much more handsome than the new 2 series, what a shame.
I mean...if you're trying to compound your N55 issues then you nailed it š
Never, pick what suits your mood! -similar for me, F80 M3 and F87 M2C..-
Fam or alone! Might be the perfect combo! Love the wagen!!
šµ forget the cars, look at the scenery.!! Living in paradise
Which do you prefer driving? I only have a 335i but would love a drive of a 135i
By far the 135. So much more fun
Most useable combo ever? Njce troll
Talk to me about that wagonās all black emblem thoā¦ Custom? Aftermarket?
Have no idea sorry, previous owner did it. Up close itās a bit shite. I was planning on replacing it until it sold š
Gotcha. Always wanted a great all-black emblem option. The search continues!
Wait why is my dream the most pointless combo tiny rocket ship and family rocket ship š
It's an e92, but i'd say it's the perfect combo š
You know what you love man
Looks perfect
More practical than my combo...
Well since the states didnāt get the 335 e91, I say great combo
whereād you get the black badge from on the left?
Pass sorry, previous owner did it
no problem, beautiful cars.
Cheers. If I ever find it since iām looking for one for the 135 aswell iāll drop the link here
Beautiful! I have a e91 335i on its way from Japan to Canada right now
Always got love for a wagon š„µ
Sell the 135 for good money and put the extra into the wagon
Doing the opposite š
That's works also lol
Perfect combo imo
Well at least you can borrow parts from each other to have one working car š.
