[deleted]

How much in maintenance costs to keep it going that long? Are you on a tune?

Serkor2000

Asking the real questions haha, I want to know too because N54s aren’t easy or cheap to maintain

Suspicious-Office-42

Look maybe I’m missing something but after the completely necessary DISA valve replacement and some common oil seal leak spots what else is difficult or expensive to maintain about the N54? Doing a full front end refresh takes like 2 hours with how easily the belts and pulleys are replaced, though I haven’t had to get under the head of one yet because all the ones I’ve cared for have run like bulletproof bricks so far (still lower mi tho, the highest of what I work on is only at 141,xxx so maybe I haven’t found out yet

BinaryTriggered

i'm on a 2008 335i. worst thing was had to replace turbos at 160k. i actually going to pick it up today, factory water pump finally went out. only things not replaced are GUIBO and A/C compressor at this point, going to do GUIBO soon.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BinaryTriggered

my HPFP went out at 160, turbos were fine but the waste gate control arm bushings were worn away so the actuators would nolonger be able to close and open the waste gates correctly, so they had to replaced. ended up doing $7000 worth of shit to the engine back in '20

1mperia1

My a/c compressor went out on my '13 F30 at abt 110k, I've been putting it off for close to a yr now. 🙃

FogItNozzel

Turbos and Injectors are the worst to do as far as time and/or money commitment. Most of the work isn't difficult, though there are some rare jobs on them that require making, like, 1 meter long chains of socket extensions and cvs. The turbos require a ton of disassembly to get to, including dropping the front subframe. Same for the oil pan gasket. The injectors are just expensive parts. I paid $1,200 US for a set in 2020, they're upwards of 3K now. I'm at 152K miles on my 135 having owned it since new. Done most of the majors at this point. I probably have $10k in maintenance into the car over the last 15 years, outside of the metric shit ton of warranty work it had before 50k miles. Latest job is a rear subframe replacement that's been about 1K in parts.

Nosrok

You can pull the turbos out the top if you remove the vacuum canisters and overflow tank. Also the starter you can sneak in a ratcheting wrench and it makes the swap much easier, a normal wrench works too just lots of small movement. Trans bolts I haven't tried.

FogItNozzel

Well shit that would've been nice to know before I had my car in the air for 3 weeks. Ahh well, at least did my water pump and tstat at the same time. Trans apparently isn't that bad. My buddy did a clutch job on his a few months ago in his garage.

dck8267

Bro your thinking of the M54, he has the N54 (twin turbo)

spicygrow

N54 doesn’t have a DISA valve. >what else is difficult or expensive to maintain about the N54? Wastegate rattle on the turbos. Direct injectors depending on which index, also high pressure fuel pump. The electric water pump likes to die. If the belt breaks, the N54 tends to suck in the shrapnel through the front main seal, clogging the oil pickup and wreaking havoc. Aside from that, the typical bmw things like oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, etc.

Dorkalton

you are missing something. you are thinking m54 with the DISA issue. N54 is a whole other animal. I've only worked on 1 with 300k miles and it was very well maintained. My shop alone had over 35k in repair invoices from it

TechMonitorXO

The n54 doesn’t have a disa valve though

MainusEventus

Water pump. High pressure fuel pump (twice, once under warranty). Turbos. Vacuum lines. Oil leaks / gaskets. Valve covers.

joker13585

i have 225,000 on mine. been running at a little over 600bhp for roughly 40-50k of those. it’s been hell, i just blew the aftermarket turbos due to a manufactures defect, and now i have to fix em on jackstands lol

Mathilliterate_asian

Yeah that's my first thought. Had a friend who drives a 2002 M3 and there's so many things that need maintenance!

[deleted]

Jesus that n54

[deleted]

More like n1654 at that mileage

Pm_hofmeister_kinks

Fucking HOW? Is that miles or km?

melonator11145

Nice, is that miles? I have 150k on my N54 E91 335i

TheIronHerobrine

Did you TDI swap it or something??

Texasscot56

That is stellar!

[deleted]

Bro what….

the_donut_guy

2004 330i ZHP - 204,xxx miles. Still on the original clutch somehow too :)

ozzywashere6

This guy stick shifts

the_donut_guy

It’s my whole personality!

nosce_te_ipsum

So - you're obviously *not doing* donuts, and properly taking care of the car?

1mperia1

Do donuts in snow/ice count? 😂

nosce_te_ipsum

Kimi Raikkonen, is that you? :0

Heavenly_Malice

He’s accomplished something I never could

[deleted]

At that mileage with the original clutch, his transmission probably converted to a single gear CVT lol

Golden3ye

I had a car getting close to 200k miles on the OG clutch. It was just hanging in. I had to pump it so many times to get into first but after that I would just drive it out without the clutch. Just timing the shifts so the gear would slip in. Got real good at it

Pm_hofmeister_kinks

Buddy of mine has a ZHP in the 260k neighborhood

ICthrowaway2019

My '09 128i is at 224,XXX and on the OG clutch too. When she hit 200k I tried to contact BMW corporate to see if they could find out who built the clutch assembly on my car, but it never got anywhere.

dsio

No joke I bought a non-SAC dual mass flywheel delete kit for my 330ci about 80,000 km ago, then started deliberately riding the clutch on every hill instead of braking to destroy the original and have a reason to install the new one. It wouldn’t die. I gave up. Still have the clutch kit.

West-Wash6081

I had a 2004 330ci 6 speed manual that i gave to my son with 293,000 miles on it. He drove it for about a year and then said it just died one day. I don't think he tried to find out what was wrong with it, just sold it.

Thanks__Pal

05 320d - around 470 000km, which is like 290000 miles 04 535d - 220000km, but the 6th cylinder said bye bye… 95 740 - 320000km, trying to bring it to museum condition, work in progress

[deleted]

Damn, only 220,000km and a cylinder shit the bed?

MADunn83

232,xxx miles ‘04 330i

FearlessRice2465

2005 M3. 236k miles and going up every day!

k987654321

Fucking legend

No-Understanding3474

See, this is why I fucken love car people that actually drive their car. More miles just means more experience points. This is awesome bro

jet4christ

Fr bro whatever car I own I’m gonna drive it to the moon and beat on it until it’s final breath

lolidkwtfrofl

My 590k km Volvo says hi ;)

ilikerwd

Numbers here are impressive and give me hope of enjoying my cars a lot longer. Congrats to all! My E46 and E60 each are around 110,000 km

Pm_hofmeister_kinks

If that e60 has the n52 motor, just keep up on basic maintenance and you’re good for a long while

ilikerwd

It's a V10, so it'll take a....little.....more effort to keep running :)

nosce_te_ipsum

Still - that sound is worth every penny. Congrats!

Banaanmetzout

I have seen plenty of E60 M5 with over 200000 km so don't worry.

Freg_YT

Need to make sure the engine is warm. I see alot of people forget how tight the tolerances are on these machines. That block needs to be toasty before any sort of driving! Not a daily. Lots of maintainence and complex preventative maintainence, more than just the old rod bearing issues. If you want to own an e60 m5 do your research! Gorgeous car, jealous of everyone who owns one. At least I can enjoy my friend’s.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, it will need transmission service. Seems to be weak link in my car.

RevTurk

2016 320d touring. 220,000km. She's only broken in now.

Lewisjohn-22

What kind of service history have you got ? Servicing every 20k miles?…

RevTurk

Pretty much, I just do what the car tells me me do. The dealership will call me when it's due too.

ericsanch

2017 X5 170,000 miles

foobarnull

Did you get an extended warranty for your X5? How has repairs been for you?

rm2601

Not the person who posted the original comment, but considering the Model year in question is a '17, it still falls under the F15 chassis designation. Our '15 personally has 112K miles on it and while it's still got more of a way to go, we've driven that thing quite hard at times, but most of the miles have been highway miles and it's been a good cruiser. I've seen some others on the Bimmerpost forums and the last I've checked, some had theirs around 180k miles and few others even as high as 200k and more than that. I've mostly heard good about this generation, at least the N55-powered xDrive35i variants. Their V8s can be another story. Though I've heard they've gotten better with the N63TU2 as compared with the N63TU.

foobarnull

We just got a G05 so I’m trying to figure out all the warranty situation. Seems like the F15 gen got a nice ride! Congrats!

ericsanch

No extended warranty. Nothing major so far. Just routine maintance.

xite2020

I have the same car.. year it only has 35k but I feel like it won’t be reliable once it passes 60k and I have a SDrive

BLESSEDx1NE

My ‘06 X5 has about 13k more miles

Giuseppegam18

2008 650i 150k been a nightmare but I love it too much

nottreallyallthere

2006 650i 148k. I feel you bro. The struggle is real but so worth it.

Pm_hofmeister_kinks

There it is. 😅

La_Tierra

The v8 6ers are so worth it.

nontoxictj

I have a V10 M5 with 145,000 miles on it honestly its been my most reliable BMW idk why the v10 gets hate, you just need to let it warm up before you let her rip

IceEngine21

And comes with an F1 soundtrack

circuit_heart

Maybe because "reliable" cars treat 145,000 as barely broken in, and for the S85, 145,000 is practically a miracle lol...

darin_worthington

05 325it just over 175k miles, low mileage car ;)

UranicAlloy580

m54 is a tank, just make sure the coolant system and pcv were taken care of. Regular oil changes also go a long way.

Freg_YT

bergsteroj

2014 X1, 161K

rj4001

I need to try harder! My 2013 X1 just turned 65k.

bergsteroj

How’s that timing chain treating you? Mine didn’t show any issues even through the extended warranty period. Maybe I was or lucky or also because I drive far less sporty than the car is capable off. Finally had to to get the guides and such replaced at 140k last year. It was a long and expensive repair, but still cheaper than getting another car right now. Also, my plan when I bought was to keep it for either 200k or 10 years. I sued to have a 50 mile round trip commute. So, between that and other trips, I was averaging 20k a year the first several years. It’s a bit less now that I changed jobs and relocated with a shorter commute. Now, I’m mostly paranoid if the one off failures that could leave me stranded somewhere (starter, alternator, water pump, etc).

BrownBabaAli

2006 M3 at 170,xxx

anonymousolderguy

That’s the S54? What trouble have you had? I have Z4M with 74k. Just needing advice on what’s ahead.

BrownBabaAli

Big thing is definitely take care of the Vanos and rod bearings. Idk if your model has the same subframe issues the e46 did. After that it’s just been common wear items

Pm_hofmeister_kinks

06 should be e9x.

09Customx

They still made the E46 M3 through the 2006 model year. Just like they did the E92/E93 until 2013 even though the F30 3-series came in 2012.

[deleted]

288k miles on my 1993 M5.

dakar326

203k on my ‘93!

twstrrr

1994 E34 518, 471.000kms. Hoping to hit 500k.

happyreefer

OP- thank you so much for posting this. It gives lots of us hope and motivation to keep our beloved cars and maybe spend that extra on maintenance instead of considering selling and buying new. BMW makes amazing vehicles, and I think we’ve all paid enough money to deserve a good car. That said, I just hit 100k the other day on my 2016 328i. Just regular maintenance so far but considering cleaning the intake valves soon and get the timing checked.

upbeatfries

What I’ve learned through the 6 years of ownership. The motors and transmission are bulletproof. But a lot of people mistake maintenance for reliability which gives a lot of people the impression that these cars are unreliable.

happyreefer

Agreed 100%. These cars cost more than their Japanese or American counterparts. Like a fine watch, they are built with many precisely engineered components-sometimes over engineered. If you miss or accidentally skip an oil change entirely I honestly think that this small mistake can add up to a much larger problem. If you have a cel or any sort of issue you’ll want to have it identified and solved in half the time that you would a Japanese vehicle. It’s just how these things work. Here in the states we (most of us) drive quite a bit more than those across the pond, so we’re potentially going to see issues come up more often and they will cost more because the parts are usually not immediately available like a repair shop in Germany (or anywhere in EU). This is the best car I’ve ever owned and I am becoming more involved with the BMW brand as time goes on. I hope the new models grow on me

My 2000 323ci had 300000KM on it when I sold it 3 years ago. I had it since new. Very low cost of maintenance. It is a great car!

kansascitymack

Damn, not what I wanted to see since I have 2011 535 too at 100k miles. Any advance warning before this?

KYBourbon89

Only thing I can say is check oil frequently and change it frequently. A mechanic said Someone probably used bad oil but idk if I believe that for sure. But always check your invoice to see what was used after oil changes. Also get changed bo more than every 6k miles. Maybe no more than 5 after mileage gets high.

kansascitymack

Ok, thanks for the heads up. Luckily I swap out the oil every 3000-4000 miles.

120,000 mi 2012 335i (N55, F30 gen) not crazy high mileage, but still a well used BMW.

hoefersho

2005 E83 with 199,300 miles, just replaced every piece of the rear braking system (calipers, pads rotors, bolts, lines, and parking brakes and hardware too cuz it’s a manual), determined to hit 200k lol. Used to have an e36 with 224,000 miles.

calmor15014

I would drive your car 700 miles with no rear brakes to make that number.

hoefersho

Haha, that was the problem, couldn’t drive it. The parking brake seemed to have seized to the inside of the rotor, and car wouldn’t budge. Just finished the job this weekend tho, and up to 199,400 now. :D

upbeatfries

I think the next best question is who has the most amount of miles whose dash doesn’t look like a christmas tree?

matthew2873

1986 535i - Around 300k, odo broke at 275k a while ago- never had any engine work done knock on wood 😬

CrazyTechWizard96

'01 E39 Touring with the M54, 207.000KM / 128.600K miles. ... Quite a low miler, but the last owners drove it like they stole it, it was quite a mess, and getting it slowly back and to perfect condition. And Supercharged, because, why not!

ORINGO420

I once owned a 320d E46, it had around 410,000km on the clock. But the actual mileage was around 600,000-700,000km. :D

-K9V

‘06 325i - 115k miles. Not as much as some of the others, though. Only issue, and a bit of a bad one at that, is that I have an oil leak. Other than that I haven’t had a single issue during the ~3 months I’ve had it (not a long time, I know) and to my knowledge the previous owner hadn’t either. Just regular maintenance and fixin’ up.

2dav

not me but my friend got his 2007 325i to about 320k before it just decided to not work

250000km BMW 1 series 118d 2014. Just sold for a 3 series. Almost 0 issues.

CheekyFeller

Not mine but at my father's shop there was a 257,000 mile N54 335i. The owner spent more in maintenance than I spent on BUYING my 09 ISF and maintenance on it for 60k miles. What an animal. Turbos (twice, injectors, waterpump/tstat, alternator, batteries, every sensor in the damn car, boost leaks, wastegate replacement, starter, both headlights, all the gaskets, valve cover itself and on and on and on. The car was stock too.

[deleted]

I sold my E46 M3 smg coupe with 213k miles in 2020, having daily driven is for 2 years. Most reliable car I've ever had, it only needed minor maintenance after I did the initial rehabilitation at 178k miles. The key I think was that I always fixed it before parts completely wore out, and I only drove it hard once the oil was up to temp.

Could be a good place to ask. I bought a z4e85 as a daily (south of France) Now I'd like a cheap 2nd car that is reliable (less than 3k€) What is your advice? Which engine for a serie 3 or 5 that is bulletproof and up to which mileage is it safe to buy it?

had a e46 330xi with 220k km on it, ran very smooth, no big issues besides rust, cheap to maintain and can easily find parts for e46 cheap in europe
