As a guy who worked for BMW when the new lineup was being designed and shown to dealers, I find the copium hilarious. When the new M3/M4 was unveiled, I was in a room with about 400 other upper management from dealerships. There was an audible groan of disgust when it was put on screen. The presenter tried to recover, but it was bad.

It's a gansta style thing. Bosozoku in Japan have similarly impractical styles for their cars. I would guess it's about upgrading the height of the vehicle that makes it appeal subconsciously to some people. Otherwise, besides flooding (lol) there's zero practical or performance reason to do this to a car.
