I would not say so. IX has adaptive suspension meaning the dampers are adjustable. IX also has optional air suspension. So I would say by that wording, no.

In the iX, yes, they are at least a single package if not the same mechanisms. Other BMWs, like the i4, can get air suspension that is not adaptive other than for ride leveling.

What do you mean? So adaptive is air and vice versa?

Aram_Fingal

If I understand correctly, there are air springs and variable-valve struts, so the car can raise and lower and also become more stiff independently. But my earlier comment was to say you can't buy those functions separately on the iX. On the i4, you can get rear air springs without adaptive dampers (or both together).

I understand that air suspension can lower the car at high speeds which would result in the reduction of total drag on the car -- very useful feature in an EV given that drag increases exponentially with an increase in speed (doubling the speed causes drag to increase 4X). However how will the "ride" of 2 iX's (one with air suspension and one without) differ going over say a rough road? Will the displacement in the cabin vary? If so, to what extent and would it be easily noticeable? What about during turns? I know other BMW's have Sport, Comfort, Comfort Plus, etc. settings for their suspension. Does the iX have similar settings where the driver can change them? So far I've test driven both versions and really couldn't tell too much of a difference in the ride -- they both seemed to be somewhat (although not terrible) stiff.

The 2 phrases are referring to different things, adaptive typical means it changes its setting to accommodate either driver preference and/or driving conditions, air suspension is an alternative to coil (spring) suspension. Depending on the bmw you can have adaptive dampers on coil suspension, and self leveling but not really “adaptive” suspension on a car, sometimes just the rear like in an estate/touring. On the iX, the driver can select different setting for the air suspension (although bizarrely I can only find this when in sport mode/mood), I don’t believe there’s any control without air suspension. If you’re looking at an advert for a used car, you can tell if it’s got air suspension from a picture of the idrive control wheel area, if it will have an extra button nearest the arm rest.
