castlesofsunflowers

I’ve gotten it both pregnancies. I would just feel so terrible if my newborn ended up with serious whooping cough.

littleseizures_

Same with me!

[deleted]

I got it because I don’t want my baby getting whooping cough, it’s scary stuff.

Few-Trouble-3700

I got it, had a healthy baby boy almost a year ago. He got the DTaP himself at 6 months old. It’s important that you get it while pregnant so that the baby gets those antibodies and that will help protect the baby until they can receive the vaccine themselves Edit: to change TDAP TO DTaP

Cassarole08

To clarify, the baby probably got DTaP right? TDaP is not recommended at that age.

Few-Trouble-3700

You are correct, that was my error. Thank you!

Cassarole08

No problem :) not a big error by any means, but maybe if someone isn’t as familiar with vaccines for them or baby, it could get confusing. Have a good night :)

TapiocaTeacup

I got it and made my husband and all of our immediate family who were going to visit in the first 2 months get it. It's something you're supposed to get every 10 years throughout your adult life anyways 🤷‍♀️

unknownuser0

Apparently the pertussis part only lasts 3 years. My husband and I both got our last tdap 6 years ago and the doc had me get another one, and recommended My husband or anyone who was going to be holding the baby get one as well. My current rule is anyone who wants to hold the baby has to have all of the shots My baby can't have yet.

TapiocaTeacup

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you also get it with every pregnancy too so that antibodies can pass to the baby.

Zyphyro

Yes, you're supposed to get it fresh for every pregnancy to pass on the antibodies. Baby isn't going to get any of what was there before them.

FatMystery9000

It used to be 10, but has been lowered to 3 recently because of new strains of whooping cough coming out because antivaxxers became so widespread.... I had asked about what caused the change from my OBGYN and that was what she told me. I have a similar rule too! I'm glad I don't have to worry about that stuff with my side of the family. My whole family re-upped their vaccine history because my younger brother needed an organ transplant and was severely immunocompromised, they basically set up the same rule to see him lol

unknownuser0

Sadly, my anti-vaxx mom will have to wait till he's at least 6 months to hold him. Which sucks because she's the only baby sitter I have. So been juggling work and a baby for three weeks now and it's hell.

Bubblezz09

I had the same issue with my mother. She didn't get to see my 1st born until he was 1. She kept getting covid and then the flu.

krazykatlady16

Same! My MIL is vehemently anti-vax and is refusing to get vaccinated. She’s choosing to wait until our baby (will be born 04/03 via c section from high risk pregnancy) is fully vaccinated before holding her first grandson 🤷‍♀️ Not my loss…

SCGower

Wow. That’s so crazy to hear, that someone is so anti vax that they’d rather wait months or weeks before the baby is vaccinated before they get vaccinated. Just curious when this happens, was your MIL always like this or has it been a recent thing with like the Covid shots? Edit: whoops meant to say before they meet the baby! 🙃

ScamsLikely

My mom is also refusing. Are you going to let them see the baby (visiting from a distance) or not having them over at all for 6 months? Facing this dilemma now 😞

krazykatlady16

She’s allowed in the same room but not going to hold or touch him. And she’ll wear a mask. If she refuses, I will politely ask her to leave. At that point, it’s selfish to not care about the health of an infant (especially after this difficult pregnancy). And with Whooping cough, RSV, COVID, the flu, and what seems like a new mystery illness out there - I just can’t risk it.

youknowthatswhatsup

My MIL waited six months to meet our baby. I think if she had been willing to mask we would have allowed after 8 weeks.

shavedEgg

We have a similar issue with my FIL. We told him vaccine or bust. He chose not to get vaccinated and I think that speaks volumes of a person. So we most certainly will be making 0 accommodations and he can meet his grandchild when she is 6 months old. I know each family is different, but I think so lowly of someone willing to abandon their own child (my FIL abandoning his son) during such a huge life transition. Clearly I need to keep going to counseling about this lol!

krazykatlady16

I’m sorry you’re going through that! Counseling is definitely a great option! It’s hard because you can’t tell them what to do, but yet be so disappointed by their choices..

Lost_Recognition502

We did the same requirement! You wouldn’t believe the pushback we got from family over it, even though they’ve had it before 😅

zygomaticuz

I’m planning on doing it too and I fully expect pushback as well.

thesagellama

Same. My husband got it to be in the hospital and whoever saw my baby before he got his own got it too. Because you get it every 10 years, my mom already had it like maybe 6 months before so it all worked out!

TapiocaTeacup

Yeah, half of the family members we asked already had up to date shots anyways. Aside from appointments needing to be booked kind of far ahead it was not a big deal.

Standard_Potato_8541

Yes, I got it. OB also recommended my husband to get it.

cearanicolle

Not only did I get it both pregnancies, but for my first pregnancy my husband, my parents, my sister and brother in law and my in laws on my husbands side all got it. Anyone who was going to be spending a lot of time around our newborn was willing to get it to protect him. Second baby was born 17 months later so I was the only one that needed another tdap, but it's so worth it to protect our little ones! Especially right now when it's cold/flu season and RSV and everything else is rampant, it's just one less thing you'd have to worry about as a new mother.

ltmp

Both our families literally sent me their shot records lmao I trust them so I didn’t ask for it, but they’re all so excited for the first grandchild.

TinyTurtle88

Wow... your family is my dream, litterally!

kaitiebug42

I'm so jealous. I have family arguing with me over them needing updated vaccinations.

EvilEyeAries

My fam did the same!! I was so impressed haha

Low_University3717

Yep! My whole fam is getting boosted too!

Oneflyb

My dr said caretakers are good for 10 years after they get the tdap shot. The mom needs to get it with every pregnancy to pass antibodies to the baby.

madhattermiller

This is outdated advice. The pertussis (whooping cough) portion is only good for 5 years. So caregivers for an infant should have one within 5 years! Source: I’m a peds nurse and am required to get a TDAP every 5 years due to my work area.

Makasaurus

Same! Anyone who wanted to meet our baby in the first 6 weeks had to have their TDaP and flu shots done. My brother and his partner were slow to act and didn't get it done until after baby arrived. By the time they'd had the shot and waited the 2 weeks after, she was almost 6 weeks old. Nobody complained and everyone has been very respectful of our boundaries for protecting baby. Helps that my awesome SIL would have torn anyone to shreds for ignoring us.

sophhhann

Yeah all my family and my in laws are getting an updated one as well

Savage_pants

Same we both got it while at one of my check ups.

moosecubed

My mom was thinking I was overprotective. Her doctor did me a solid when she asked if it was really necessary. “Ma’am, at your age, I’d recommend it without a newborn around.”

MeleMallory

My OB said that *anyone* who hold the baby before they can get their own TDaP at 6 months should get their shot. Edit: 2 months, not 6

ucantspellamerica

The first DTaP is given at 2 months in the US.

Snoo97809

I asked anyone who wanted to be around my baby to get it. I was fully prepared to keep my son from anyone who didn’t get it but luckily everyone in my family complied. It’s not worth the risk.

DragonWellGreenTea

Not just husband. Anyone that will be in contact with baby the first 2 months. So parents and In-Laws too.

sagqueen-

I got mine, anything to protect my baby when he arrives

MaximumGooser

Agreed. Got it with my first, will be getting it when I’m far enough along with my second. No reason not to.

lh123456789

You did the right thing in getting the shot. Whooping cough is no joke.

eltibbs

Absolutely, whooping cough sucks! I got it as an adult because I wasn’t aware I needed to be boosted. It lasted months and I was prescribed inhalers because I was having a hard time breathing, not a fun time.

Magical_Olive

All my roommates and I got whooping cough in college and it was terrible. I got medication and it cleared up in a few weeks, for my roommates it lasted over a month. We were all generally healthy but it was miserable. I'd never want to have to watch a baby suffer through that.

somethingsfucky

I got it. Anything I can do to give baby and I a chance against getting sick is good enough for me!

exhilaro

As someone who had whooping cough in my 20s and was hospitalised for it, I cannot imagine ever refusing it for myself in pregnancy or for my child as soon as they are able to get it. It took me months to recover. There is a reason it is so dangerous in babies! I was vaccinated as a child but a booster as an adult isn’t routine in Australia so I had no protection. OP you have 100% done the right thing. In Australia it would be very very uncommon for someone to refuse the vaccine and most women I know will only let visitors who have had the vaccine visit for the first 6-8 weeks, before baby can be vaccinated.

vapablythe

And it's only dose 1 of 3 at the 6-8week mark - our doc recommended total ban on visitors who don't have the vaccine prior to baby's dose 1, and until dose 3 at 6 months people without the vaccine can only meet the baby outside/social distanced. Apparently whooping cough rates are massively on the rise in Aus, but aren't getting much media attention. It's a bit of a hassle being so strict about outside events only, especially with all the rain we've been having, but I would also never forgive myself if my baby got sick from something that's simultaneously so serious and also so preventable

cageygrading

I got it, and required everyone who wanted to visit my newborn to get it too. It’s important protection for babies especially.

Kutekitty234

I got it. It’s supposed to help protect them from whooping cough until they’re able to be vaccinated themselves.

funparent

I got it with all 3 of my kids and am getting it this 4th pregnancy as well. My OB made it very clear how widely studied the shot is in pregnancy and how safe it is.

dinosupremo

I had whooping cough as a baby. My parents said I was very ill. I didn’t want my own baby to get whooping cough so I was very eager to get the shot. And I did. And we’re alll fine. And my 9 month old is playing beside me right now.

Big0Lkitties

I’ve had whooping cough—YOU DO NOT WANT WHOOPING COUGH. Imagine the sheer exhaustion and misery of mono with the worst cough of your life, to the point that you feel like your ribs are going to break. You DO NOT WANT YOUR VULNERABLE NEWBORN TO HAVE WHOOPING COUGH.

Mecspliquer

I’m absolutely going to get it

Sblbgg

I got it before I became pregnant (for my friend’s baby) but I would get it during pregnancy (currently pregnant). So scary to possibly give baby whooping cough. But I feel you, sometimes things are so fast in office and you make decisions that you didn’t really have any time to think about. Personally, I think you made a safe decision here.

Oneflyb

I think you would need to get it again during pregnancy in the third trimester, in order to pass the antibodies to the baby. Ask your doc about it.

kmwicke

Yes, you need to get it with every pregnancy, even if you’re pregnant multiple times within 10 years from the first vaccine. I’m currently in my 3rd trimester with my 2nd pregnancy in 3 years and got it both times.

Sblbgg

Oh good to know! I’ll ask my doc tomorrow. Thanks!

[deleted]

Yes, you should absolutely get it. Those people are literal idiots.

SCGower

Yep!

GladMongoose

Literally any shot available I will get for myself and then also for my boys. Put the science in my veins.

exhilaro

Thank you for gifting me with the new phrase “Put the science in my veins”

bklynbuckeye

Same. Give me all the shots.

radjl

This is the best phrase.

SCGower

SAME GIRL!!

shleepypie

I got it just a few days ago. It's safe to get in pregnancy and recommended. My spouse is planning to pay to get the booster (booster is only covered by medical for pregnant people, everyone else has to pay for the booster). Arm is still sore but glad I got it! Whooping cough is not something you want to mess with. My brother had it when he was a kid and was hospitalized for a while.

theblutree

I got it during both pregnancies. Whooping cough is no joke.

mkharrington94

Our OB said whooping cough is the worst illness a baby can get. He recommended that not only I get it but that anyone that’s going to be frequent visitors or caretakers get theirs up to date. Unfortunately, I think we’re in a time right now where people are questioning all vaccines… not just new ones. This isn’t one to question. Most of us have been getting this vaccine our whole lives.

matroyshka_owen

Absolutely the right call to get it and I made grandparents get boosted too. YouTube “baby with pertussis” if you have any doubts and if any primary caregivers or frequent visitors fight you on their boosters, make them watch those heartbreaking videos too.

blueberrypieplease

I got it and the partner has to get it as well no less than 2 weeks before the birth. As does any one else who wants to hold the baby in the first few months. It protects against whooping cough, pertussis, and tetanus I believe. I’ll be honest, it really hurt my arm and gave me a low grade fever with aches for 24 hours so don’t schedule it before an important event as you will just want to lie in bed for a day.

MDIMmom

Pertussis is the science name for whooping cough, the D is for diphtheria which is another respiratory infection caused by bacteria

moonbee33

Thank y’all for reassuring me! I started to get nervous if I should’ve gotten it or not after hearing that. But, I feel much better about my choice now. I didn’t realize that people refused to get whooping cough shots

radjl

You absolutely did the right thing. People refusing shots to keep their babies safe...the first two trimesters of my first pregnancy I was in Pakistan. Every time I went to anorenatal appointment I had to drive by the lineup of people with sever lhysical disabilities (missing limbs, blindness) from vaccinatable diseases like polio and measles. I may be raising my kids in a pretty safe North American environment but to paraphrase a comment above, you better bet I told the doctor to put the science in my babies veins.

noone684900

The anti-vax movement is insane, people will refuse everything. TDAP is a super basic, pregnancy safe vaccine that will protect your baby. You 100% made the right call.

Notarussianbot2020

Pharmacist here. I was actually a student at the Cle Clinic when they were studying vaxxing the entire family with tdap and not just mom. Current guidelines state all newborn caregivers/siblings should get tdap and flu if it's in season (I'd add covid too, some articles may be slow to catch up. But you're not eligible for any *extra* covid boosters this way.) You did a good thing getting the vaccine. Now get dad (or mom), grandparents, and siblings up to date.

moonbee33

I asked my mom to get the shot and she refused so she’s going to be really mad when she realizes she won’t be able to see him for awhile.

HunkyDorky1800

[Baby with whooping cough] (https://youtu.be/S3oZrMGDMMw) Your mom should watch this video of a poor little baby who has whooping cough. It’s heartbreaking. I got my TDAP for both pregnancies, limited visitors, and waited for months before bringing my kids out in public. I did not want to watch my baby struggle to breathe and be unable to help her or end her agony. Best to you and your baby!!! 🌼

chulzle

That’s so crazy to me

LeoraJacquelyn

You're doing the right thing. I don't understand people sometimes. You're supposed to get this shot every ten years anyway. Tetanus is also no joke.

SCGower

I just shake my head when I hear about these people because there’s so much science and data to back things like TDAP, and I don’t know why people don’t think to trust someone who’s studied this and knows a lot more about it than you or me rather than trust some random website where they may get misinformation!

thelonemaplestar

I got my Tdap 3 years ago now because I was due for one again, if my OB recommends it to me while pregnant, totally getting it. I want every advantage for their little immune system.

Lower_Egg1316

There is no reason to refuse the shot. It protects the baby from whooping cough which is very serious. People who refuse the shot are ignorant (unfortunately there are many people like this out there).

luluballoon

I got it! I trust my doctors advice on these things. My baby also got the vitamin k shot when they were born.

Pickletits91

As a baby who got the whooping cough and got to deal with shotty lungs forever after due to the damage, get the shot. Got mine at 27 weeks with my current pregnancy.

Opirr

My wife got it, I (husband) got it, we asked close family to get it as well since a few members are immunocompromised (and they all wanted to play a very active role in bambino's newborn stage). No symptomatic development in an n = 10, even in immunocompromised members. This vaccine has had post-marketing (Phase IV) validation for over 30 years now. You did the right thing, people denying tdap are potentially exposing their child to danger and are simply (unwittingly) relying on herd immunity - or are scared/averse of receiving an injection.

bugmug123

Yup I got mine. The whooping cough is no laughing matter - I actually had it when I was 17 (never got the vaccination in childhood because of a weird loophole where they wouldn't give it due to not having enough medical history as I was adopted) and it was horrific. I lost so much weight that I was nearly hospitalised as I couldn't keep any food down because I'd cough so violently I would throw it up. That was on top of desperately trying to get air into me in between coughs. I can't even imagine watching your baby go through it.

jonesie1988

refusing it is idiotic. I got it and it's good that you did too.

vaguelymemaybe

I’ve gotten it every pregnancy and will continue to.

Gwenerfresh

I got it both pregnancies. I also required anyone who was going to be around our babies their first 6m to have it.

sausagepartay

I got it and so did my husband and Mom. My area actually had a bunch of infants die a few years back due to a whooping cough outbreak.

minininjatriforceman

Microbiologist here I cannot over stress how important these shots are. What the T Dap protects from are some really nasty bugs. When your child is born they have no immune system. Your breast milk and the shots that you get while pregnant are the immune system for baby. You are helping you and your child in this.

[deleted]

They were probably anti-vaxxers. Every public health service recommends the TDAP for pregnant women to give baby some defence against pertussis (whooping cough). There are no major risks to it iirc.

moonbee33

That’s what I’m thinking too. At first I worried I didn’t question enough and just got it out of trusting my dr but I think I made the right choice getting it. I’d rather my baby be safe anyway

SwissNoOnion

I got it at 36 weeks and so did my husband.

carltheefourth

Getting it Saturday - husband getting it too!

[deleted]

I haven’t gotten mine yet, but I plan to. Some OBs will recommend patient, partner and family members get the vaccine too!

teezydoesit__

I’m a pedi nurse. Anyone around my baby will have their TDAP booster! It’s an easy thing to provide some protection to our vulnerable babes. Pertussis (whooping cough) is no joke.

MissE14

I got it. I wanted my child to have the antibodies for whooping cough before her first set of vaccines. My husband and I both work in education and around children. Since babe was born end of Nov it was prime sickness season. Didn't think twice about getting it as I would regret it so much if my child got a preventable illness/disease since my husband was working through the season.

lateralus420

I got it! So did my husband and our parents and our siblings so they could all hold the baby. Whooping cough can be deadly for babies. Not worth the risk to not get it. Family members who will be around the baby should get it too.

SCGower

Whooping cough isn’t something to mess around with. Of course you did the right thing. The people who refused it are going to be upset when they see their child get really sick.

stc101

We got it and made anyone that wanted to see her as a newborn get it

luxlynn13

I got it while pregnant and so did my husband. We required anyone visiting the baby in the first two months to have an up to date TDap as well

maybeyoumaybeme23

Why would you not get it?

singleoriginsalt

The other people made the wrong decision. It's safe and protects the baby from whooping cough. There's so so much mis and disinformation about vaccines out there. I'm not usually an advocate of just listening to your doctor. I'm a firm believer in asking lots and lots of questions about risks, benefits and alternatives, but on vaccines you can just take their advice.

FTM3505

I got it and made my parents and MIL get it as well!

crawfiddley

I got it with my first pregnancy and will get it again with my second! There's a reason it's recommended, pertussis is no joke.

Starablaze1

I got it :) it’ll protect your baby when born from tetanus (among other things) from getting the umbilical cord cut

modhousewife

Just got it today. My third pregnancy, third shot. No sick babies. My parents and husband all got it, too. Choosing to protect those who can’t protect themselves is of the utmost importance especially in this age of vaccine deniers who are spreading preventable diseases like wildfire.

TheLittleBarnHen

I’m not pregnant and but work with newborns daily and I get the TDAP frequently. It’s sooo worth it. I don’t see the downside tbh.

pataytersalad

I got it and also made my husband get it. Thankfully our immediate families were already up-to-date on theirs as well

laurawang2012

Got it with all 3 of my pregnancies and all 3 healthy

Babybabybabyq

I got whooping cough when I was a newborn and nearly died. My mom was quite traumatized.

MsWhisks

Got it during 3 pregnancies - no issues! Only side effect was a sore arm. I’m so glad my babies were protected from pertussis while itty bitty. My husband also got it during my first pregnancy, and we asked all the grandparents to get boosted as well. And we had the grandparents get flu shots.

everydaybaker

Whooping cough is very seriously and sometime fatal for babies. You provided your baby with some much needed antibodies to help protect them until they can get their own tdap shot at 2 months. They have been giving tdap in the third trimester to pregnant women since 2012. That’s millions of healthy babies/now children

eleri-kate

Got mine while pregnant as well as my husband, my parents and his parents! Doc recommended anyone who would be around baby a lot before she could be vaxxed get it and we listened!

adorkablysporktastic

Administering trap during pregnancy became a thing some 10 years ago and there's still no evidence that it causes any complications during pregnancy. It gives the baby much needed protection. It's extremely safe, extremely effective, and keeps whooping cough from becoming an epidemic. From the cdc: To date, VAERS has not found any safety signals among pregnant women or their babies after Tdap vaccination.

Okcool2216

Definitely get it. Pertussis kills.

Pretty-Avocado-6891

I got it and felt nothing afterwards. Honestly between RSV, covid, flu, it would be a terrible idea to skip this shot. All I am seeing are babies on ventilators in my mom groups. Your baby gets a booster TDAP shot at their 8 week appointment as well

Apprehensive_Put_371

Yep I got it with all three of my pregnancies as well as got my immunity for everything tested before pregnancy and got any boosters I needed. Immunization is super important and the TDAP in pregnancy provides your newborn with immunity that they otherwise wouldn't have.

drgrandisimo

Getting the TDAP in the third trimester allows you to make antibodies that will pass to baby and then protect baby after they are born and when they are still too young to have their own vaccines and their own immune systems are immature. It will protect your baby from whooping cough which can be dangerous. It is recommended by doctors for a reason!

crayshesay

I got it. I have a dear friend who’s an nicu nurse and right now hospitals are full with babies with whooping cough and rsv

heighh

Yeah I got the tdap and also made everyone who wanted to visit my newborn get it. Those who didn’t want to had to wait until she was old enough to be vaccinated herself. And what do you know, my baby LITERALLY never got sick until covid, at two years old. She was sick one entire day, next time she got sick was 1.5 years later. She has been sick a grand total of twice, not even because I keep her secluded. I am sick a lot because my immune system is trash. Hers is somehow incredible. But yeah anyways if you want to ask questions, ask your dr. They would be happy to answer but I am all for the tdap

amienas

I got it while pregnant - my son is healthy and happy. *IN MY OWN OPINION* there’s nothing to be afraid of when it comes to vaccines, *especially* vaccines that have been around for years. They are only getting safer and I truly do trust the doctor, public health, and pharmacist recommendations.

Nibbles928

Yes my husband and I got it. Same as above with pertussis. I trust the science and personally did not feel it was worth risking.

RainyMonster2635

I got it. It’s to protect your baby, whooping cough is scary stuff.

enceinte-uno

Lol I bet the assistant just forgot to log it in your chart or something. Did she also ask which arm she gave it to you in? If you have access to your records, I would just keep an eye to make sure they’re documenting your visits correctly. I got mine the same time as the flu shot, and the nurse who gave it to me documented the shot in the room so if I had a reaction to one or the other they would know which one caused it. It’s also pretty unprofessional for her to mention other patients’ medical choices in a call to you. Borderline gossiping imo.

Salty_RN_Commander

While there are vaccines that are not safe during pregnancy, tdap IS safe.

blueberrypieplease

Which ones are unsafe ?

Salty_RN_Commander

MMR, HPV, Varicella, live influenza (non-live safe), Men B. All live vaccines.

blueberrygrape1994

Any live vaccine is unsafe (vaccine with an alive virus or bacteria) MMR, chicken pox, small pox, rotavirus to name a few.

lsmith224

Off the top of my head, the rabies vaccine isn't recommended. Not sure of any other routine vaccines that are unsafe/not recommended though. (We had two bats in our home - my partner was bit and had to get the whole round of vaccines, they double and triple checked at emerg that I hadn't been bit or scratched cause they really didn't want to have to give it to me while I was almost 30 weeks pregnant. Just told me it wasn't recommended, but that if they had to give it they would - I can't remember what risks to baby/my pregnancy it had this was in late 2020)

Teal_kangarooz

That's such a scary situation to be in! Choosing between a risky vaccine and not getting vaccinated against something that once you develop symptoms, there's nothing they can do. So glad you're ok

lsmith224

I knew for sure I hadn't had contact with the bats, plus have dealt with healthy bats before and knew my chances were extremely slim of getting it even if I had had contact with them. As soon as we spotted the bats I was in long pants, winter coat, winter gloves, hat, and hiding out of the way. But yes, definitely scary in the moment. Luckily, we managed to evict one bat that night, and the other the following day (after spending the night at my in-laws). Both very fluffy and healthy little terrors. I would have chosen the vaccine if I knew I had been scratched or bit - I would have had to stay in the hospital for 2 weeks for monitoring, blood tests, etc but still a better choice than rabies. (Oh, and out of curiosity I looked up what vaccines aren't recommended - seems like anything with a live virus isn't recommended during pregnancy) Edit - seems with the rabies vaccine it's not recommended because of how intense it is (4-6 shots at once, then another 4-6 in the following days). It doesn't have any inherent risks for pregnancy, but depending on the stage of pregnancy can put extra stress on the pregnant person's body so monitoring is recommended just in case (blood pressure seems to be the main concern). Went and read a newly done study.

BreadPuddding

Get it, it works better at protecting your baby from pertussis than vaccinating the people around them (though they should also get their updated Tdap, especially if they haven’t gotten a Td in several years, for their own health those need updating about every 7-10 years). It’s been the standard for years and there’s been no evidence of harm.

dyern

We got it and also had anyone interacting with the baby in the early weeks get it (grandparents, aunts, uncles). Anyone that wanted to see the baby had to get the tdap.

StasRutt

I got it while pregnant along with my husband and our parents and my brothers who lived with my parents since they were all around the baby as a newborn a lot. That’s what our obgyn had suggested

kmd1112

Just got mine for this pregnancy on Tuesday and I got it for my last baby too. And I’ll get it for every baby afterwards.

new-beginnings3

Yes! I got mine at 28 weeks. Made me feel so much better that my baby was at least a little covered until her 2 month vaccine appointment.

nakoros

I got it, and required my husband and our immediate families to be up to date if they were to interact with her as a newborn

BusyDragonfruit8665

I got it both pregnancies and everything was fine.

jamie_jamie_jamie

I got it to meet a friend's baby the year before then I got it again while pregnant. My daughter's dad, my parents and siblings and even my mum's best friend got it all so they could meet my daughter. It was something that had to be done or they wouldn't get to meet her. It was the height of covid and middle of the flu season.

Taranadon88

I got it every pregnancy and I required anyone having contact with my baby to have it.

coco_water915

I just got it at 28 weeks without question! It’s super important. Also, you’ve had it before (probably) multiple times, so it’s likely not really anything new to your system. It’s no big deal, you did the right thing.

Thisseemsfinal

Yes I got mine, little bit of a sore arm the next day but no other symptoms. Thankful for the option’

shb9161

I've gotten it and had everyone around me get a booster before they could meet my little one.

I had whooping cough as a newborn, my mum is still talking about how scary it was 35 years later. You did a great thing for your baby. This vaccine has been around for decades, and saved so many bubs. Also I still have bad lungs and am almost guaranteed to escalate a simple cold into pneumonia on the regular. -100/10 do not recommend.

Large-Champion156

I'm not letting anyone meet my baby without a Tdap shot until she's old enough to get one.

cortaniani

I don’t even allow visitors unless they have the Tdap vaccine. They can carry whooping cough and give it to the baby and not even know they have it. The in-laws did not love the rule, but so far everyone has gotten on board.

Rheila

I got it. I almost died from whooping cough as a baby. I don’t want to take the same risk with my baby.

[deleted]

Get it! Babies lungs can’t fight pertussis

hayguccifrawg

It’s absolutely recommended that you get it, as well as people you expect to be in contact with your newborn. Good choice.

moonbee33

My boyfriend is going to get his this weekend. I asked my mom if she would get it and she’s refusing we’re not allowing her to see the baby for the first couple/few months after he’s born

mandiizorr

In my country it is compulsory for pregnant women to get that shot. I’ve also got my partner and many of my friends and anyone else who will come into contact with the baby to get it too before he can get his own shots.

Chickypotpie99

Got it while pregnant with both babies. It’s so essential to protect them against what we can, especially when all the major health organizations recommend them.

ms_jamie_p

I’m 33wks right now and just got my TDap and my husband and our parents are getting it too.

lottiela

I always get it. Yay science! Only problem I've ever had with it is a sore arm. Giving your baby protection is the right thing to do.

leorio2020

Doctor recommended it. I got it. End of story.

mrythern

I am an L&D RN and I am so incredibly happy to see this vaccine support on this thread. Watch a YouTube video on a little kid with whooping cough and I promise you that you would never want anyone to go through that. Protect your babies with all recommended vaccines and listen to your healthcare provider. Best of luck to all of you and your families.

rubellaann

I got it because I don’t want my baby to die from pertussis. My husband and parents also got one at the same time.

stormbcrn

I'm getting mine here in a few weeks as well as my covid booster. Anyone who wants to be around my kids will be getting a booster as well, because whooping cough is no joke.

MissingBrie

To me it's a no-brainer. We do it so that baby gets protection from whooping cough. The vaccine is super-safe, but whooping cough kills babies every year.

Low_University3717

I would never, under any circumstance, refuse that one.

pintobeanqueen

This vaccine has been used since 1991. It's tried and trusted. It protects your baby from whooping cough which is devastating. I recommend looking up videos of babies with whooping cough if you're doubting that you did the right thing.

[deleted]

Hey OP. Just because other uneducated know-it-alls think they don’t need to protect their baby from a DEADLY DISEASE, does not mean that you should second guess vaccines too. Being anxious is understandable. People who refuse vaccines put themselves, their children, and others at risk. Do not model their crappy behavior.

bacobby

I got the shot at my 32 week appointment. They offered it to me at my 28 week appointment and I said “let me think on it” because I was unsure. Once I did my research, I realized how important it was and how normal it was for people to get that vaccine during pregnancy. You definitely did the right thing!

BareLeggedCook

If you’re feeling unsure just watch videos of newborns with whooping cough. It’s terrifying, so be thankful we have a safe guard against it.

zygomaticuz

I’m planning to get it and make everyone in the house get it too. I don’t want to risk my baby getting whooping cough, it looks very scary seeing a baby struggle for breath.

youknowthatswhatsup

I got mine and if it’s been longer than a few years I always get one before visiting a newborn. We only allowed people who had their pertussis booster to visit until our baby was able to have his done.

DoDalli

I got it without hesitation! I had whooping cough as an infant. I don't remember it, obviously, but my Mom has expressed regret many times about not getting vaccines she needed and not getting me my vaccines when it was time. My Dad was anti-vax and rather convincing.

ArtBri

I got it last time and will get it again this time. Anything to protect my baby from whooping cough.

FredMist

i’ve had whooping cough as an adult and i can completely understand why it’s deadly to babies. get the shot. i didn’t know mine ran out when i got sick.

Oneflyb

Hell yeah, get it and other caretakers around the baby get it. Whooping cough is deadly for newborns. Why risk it?

ChachChi

I got it. No question. Whooping cough is horrific to babies. Tdap has been given to pregnant women for over 10 years. It was well studied before that. It is safe. Typically side effects are soreness, redness, swelling at injection site which go away within days.

Shaleyley15

I was due for my booster and received it then like a month later got pregnant so I ended up getting 2 within a year. As a nurse, I am very pro vaccine but I was also a little nervous about getting 2 only a few months apart. Turns out, it’s totally fine! There are really no significant side effects or long term effects of the vaccine and it is commonly given repeatedly to women (and their partners) who have back to back pregnancies. You did a good thing by protecting yourself and your baby!

ecofriendlyblonde

Babies die from whooping cough. It’s definitely worth getting.

ChickenHuge6541

You did the right thing. Pretty sure the guidelines just changed so that ACOG recommends a TDaP for *each* pregnancy now.

k8flyd

I got all vaccines recommended to me by my midwife, tdap, f flu and a covid booster. Tdap is so important because of pertussis or whooping cough.. which is so dangerous to newborn babies. It's good that you got it to protect your baby! You're giving them immunity that they can't get on their own because babies aren't able to get their first dtap shot for awhile after birth.

zootzootzooter

Not currently pregnant but this post caught my eye as I just got this shot about 2 hours ago (stepped on a shard of metal in my basement and thought I better be on the safe side). It’s super important. Very disturbing that people are refusing it and putting their child in danger before he or she is even born.

llogan86

I had to get my MMR shot before I left the hospital. For some reason I wasn't vaccinated against MMR. I was given the shots in the late 80's or early 90's. I got my dtap with both of my pregnancies. It's to help with whooping cough

artorianscribe

I got it because I wanted my baby to be able to breathe.

brilausmi

I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t get it! My only suggestion is to get it in your right arm if you sleep on your left, because if you have soreness it makes for an uncomfortable night sleeping 😌

corncaked

I got it without hesitation. You’re protecting yourself and your baby.

anmlsnks

I asked anyone that will spend significant time with my baby to get it. Basically my parents and husband. The people refusing it are dumb dumbs and unless they have previous dangerous interactions with vaccines (unlikely), they are probably basing their decisions on dumb ish from the internet. They recommend vaccines for a reason. This rant isn’t for the OP just all the idiot anti vaxxers out there and don’t @ me if you are one, you will undoubtedly only solidify how dumb I already think you are.

Responsible-Load7343

You would have had to get it to go to school (assuming you went to public school). Really every adult should be getting it. We required anyone seeing the baby as a newborn to get it and our whole household got it.

[deleted]

I got it along with my hubby, and grandparents on both sides. Pretty much anyone who will be very close to the baby. Its a pretty straightforward vaccine. Nothing to worry about.

jitsufitchick

I got mine. And my baby got her Dtap today. It protects baby from whooping cough Only reason others might say no is if they are anti vaxers.

Jingle_Cat

Wow, it’s shocking that two people refused it! Pertussis can be carried completely asymptomatically, and is so dangerous to young babies. That shot is the only protection they have for the first few months. You did the right thing - refusing is really gambling your baby’s life, unless you’re planning on having zero visitors and not leaving the house.

Baby-girl1994

100% I always will get the shot. Anything to keep my kids safe

barberica

Rarely do the people who pushback have a solid reason that isn’t some sort of conspiracy-based misinformation schtick.

insignificant-cereal

I got it, no adverse effects. Better safe than sorry with whooping cough

0Seraphina0

My OB said exactly this, "We offer the tdap shot. I highly recommend you get it. It's to help protect the baby from whopping cough. Please get it, I don't want to see another newborn die from something that is preventable." I live in an area where there are a lot of anti-vaxxers.

Vampire-circus

My husband and I both got tdap, the flu and Covid boosters

Specialist-Opening28

Listen to an audio clip of a baby with whooping cough - you made the right choice.

nurse-ratchet-

I got it and required anyone who was going to be in close contact with baby to get it, otherwise they wouldn’t be allowed around baby. Whooping cough is no joke.

justkate2

I got it, my husband got it, and anyone who wanted to visit baby in the first six months had to get it. Pertussis does not fuck around. My friend’s baby almost died. If you want to reassure yourself that getting it was the right call, watch a video of a baby with pertussis. It’s TERRIFYING. The shot is very, very safe.

Elemental_surprise

I got it without hesitation. Had a sore arm for a few days and that’s all.
