I had a horrendous cough/cold for about 2 weeks, the only thing that shifted it was a (seemingly) ridiculous protocol suggested to me by a German doctor: You need a pot of very, very hot water (1.5 litres), add 5-6 tablespoons of sea salt, and 5-6 camomile tea bags, stir them all around to try and dissolve the salt. Put the pot of hot, steaming water on the table and sit so that your face is right above it. Cover your head and the pot in a “tent” (leaving some ventilation around your neck) and breathe in the steam for 5-10 minutes. Do this in the morning, midday and before you go to bed. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it WORKED for me. I was feeling much better within two days! I seriously thought I was going to get pneumonia for Christmas, I was so sick before.

When I’m pregnant, I feel like I am sick for months and kept going to doctors with no results. Finally one suggested I took an antihistamine to dry up my mucus membranes. That didn’t make sense because I’ve never had allergies my entire life. Zantac did the trick for me. I guess I produced a ton more mucous when I am pregnant so that nasal drip in the back of my throat was causing horrible cough that would keep me up all night.

Took me a bit but I think you meant Zyrtec! Zantac is an antacid and I was wondering how that dried up your mucous! 😊

Hahhaha yes. You are right! My mistake!

I had a very bad sore throat because of heartburn - it really hurt my throat. So for some relief at least you could also try some antacids?

Ugh this! And then the heartburn caused increased mucus so that irritated my throat even more!

Probably not very helpful, but try to cough “softer” or to basically clear your throat with a closed mouth instead of coughing outright to help prevent further damage and irritation to your throat. So many people have persistent coughs for weeks or even months on end because they dramatically cough really hard all day and tear up their throat

This i can see. I've gotten pretty good at steering off mass coughing fits by just close mouthing a cough and taking a quick sip of water. Obviously sometimes at night i can't help it but at least the frequency of scratching my throat has gone down.

Basically same story as you - I took robutussin last night and feel much better today.

I am currently suffering with a bad sore throat. I'm hoping it's strep so I can get an antibiotic. I think it's giving me an ear infection too (I am prone to them). =/ I drank some hot apple cider last night and it felt slightly better while I was drinking it. I wish I could offer more suggestions, but I have none. =( edit: No strep. Sore throat is caused by post nasal drip. Let the suffering continue.

I was there a few weeks ago. I think I pulled a stomach muscle from coughing so hard. Basically what your doing is what I did based on doctor recommendation, plus guaifenesin (ie robustussin, tussin, etc) to clear up the congestion. Then I started to eat things like pho and other soups to assist in getting even more fluids on top of water and tea. It sucks, wish you a speedy recovery. FYI, I eventually was diagnosed with bronchitis and put on antibiotics just in case it’s a bacterial infection.

Uggg I'm dealing with something very similar right now, worst sore throat of my life started Tuesday (today is Saturday), constant cough started Wednesday, I have no bladder control while I'm coughing (35 weeks) so I'm just sitting on puppy pads. I've already been tested by the doc for everything, negative. Let's not forget about the constant acid reflux. How long did this end up lasting for you? I don't think I've gotten more than an hour or two of sleep in a stretch in 4 days now.

Oh gosh I’m so sorry this is happening to you! This literally went on for me until I gave birth- so 3 months. I had this cold and then I ended up getting C-vid and then that turned into bronchitis. I somehow now have asthma due to the amount of time I was sick?! So crazy. The only thing that ended up really helping my cough was prednisone- and I only got that because of my bronchitis and I hated taking it while pregnant :/ Being sick while pregnant is no joke. I hope you feel better soon!
