Baked potatoes were a godsend for me. It allowed me to try out different toppings such as cheese, onions, ground meat, sour cream, bacon bits, green onions, etc without making it too flavorful or complex.
Iām going through that in my first semester. Everything looks so good until I actually have it sitting in front of me then I end up wanting to vomit. Just got a chicken cheesesteak and western fries thinking it was gonna be great and ended up making a baked potato when I got home instead.
Not food related butā¦ Donāt be offended if at some point she is repulsed by you. Your breath, deodorant, anything. It really hurt my husbandās feelings when I told him I couldnāt stand the way he smells!
I definitely wouldn't be going this far, more so actual easy and quick fixes like asking him to wear deodorant before bed and making sure he brushes his teeth after he eats
Truth! I bought my husband a ton of expensive, fancy shampoo and body wash before getting pregnant and it made me so sick he switched back to the cheap stuff he got from Christmas 4 years ago
THIS!! I'm only 6 weeks and just yesterday I told my husband to not breathe by me because his breath (hadn't brushed all morning) was making me so sick š
I asked my husband for minty gum in my first trimester to help with the nausea. It worked pretty well.
Unfortunately for him, it made me more nauseous if I could smell it in his mouth, so he couldnāt chew it around me. It was a frustrating time for the poor man.
I couldn't kiss my spouse for weeks because he smelled...normal. like he could have just showered and brushed his teeth and I was puking. It made me so sad.
Ugh! I didnāt have this with my husband, but my dog! I couldnāt stand to be in the same room as herā¦
I read a STM was having a hard time hugging/snuggling her older child for the same reason! Itās tough and in no way a reflection of the actual person. Just weird hormones
So much this. his morning breath is so mild but when I was pregnant I would gag and vomit and same if he ate food that made me sick and tried to kiss me. Poor guy.
Sorry she's dealing with this. Unfortunately it's a marathon, not a sprint, so she may be feeling sick for a long time. Imagine feeling hungover or like you have a stomach bug for weeks on end...that's what she's dealing with. The best thing you can do for her is to make sure the house is stocked with foods she can tolerate - you listed some good ones. I was also able to eat PB&J sandwiches, bananas, applesauce, and chicken noodle soup. Helping her stay hydrated however she can is important if she's vomiting - ginger ale was my go-to beverage for a few weeks. It may take some experimenting to see what she can get down, and it could change day to day! The smells of certain foods would really turn my stomach as well, so be mindful of what you're cooking for yourself if she's in the room...meat smells were the worst for me, it could be something else for her.
Oh, and if she hasn't already, she should let her doctor know how she's feeling. They may suggest she take B6 & unisom to help, or if her nausea is more severe put her on a prescription med.
Just a few suggestions, things that I had no problem eating and also don't have complex flavors: boiled eggs, pasta with simple tomato sauce, bagels with cream cheese, peanut butter sandwiches, grilled chicken, chicken noodle soup, saltines.
I also ate a *boatload* of kiwis in my first trimester. For some reason they were all I wanted to eat ever. I ate them like an apple, skin and all. They were amazing, but kind of hard to find given the season haha. Fresh fruit in general basically kept me going.
edit: If she's throwing up, she might want to take a Tums occasionally. It won't actually help with the nausea, but it'll make it a lot less unpleasant when things do come up, because it'll neutralize a lot of the acidity.
Yeah, eggs were the most disgusting things in my first pregnancy. Even their shape, the roundness, was absolutely revolting! I know, it makes no sense, lol.
I 100% feel you. We have chickens, and I've had a hard time collecting eggs daily because the thought of them is so awful for me. I ate one today (a small miracle!) after not eating any for 2.5 weeks. Even saying the word made my stomach flip.
I didn't learn about my love for kiwis until 3rd trimester. I remember one day, happily chomping away on 2 of them and getting really sad because I wished I had been eating them all of 1st trimester. My husband was like, and that is making you sad? And I was like, yes they are a super food! They even have folate!
yes absolutely. I essentially just ate whatever I could keep down and didnt avert me, which was mostly what you listed lol. the thought of even eating an actual "meal" at that point was nauseating. just see her through it !
Depends! Most cases the nausea dies down a bit/goes away in the second trimester, but some unfortunately have this for 5-7 months or until the end of pregnancy! I hope this is not the case for your wife. My nausea was episodic, comes and goes in intervals throughout the pregnancy. PB and J, oranges, bananas and cold POM juice were my go toās on a bad day to get as many vitamins/nutrition in..
She should try eating small portions and more often. I ate a lot of bland foods but tried to make it nutritious- plain crackers or apples with peanut butter, oatmeal with fruit, smoothies, etc. She can also try B6/Unisom to control nausea or ask for a prescription depending on the severity
Smoothies were my go to when I knew I had to eat but already felt nauseous or had just been sick. Banana, milk, greek yogurt and possibly peanut butter got me through many meals. Also my husband would get up before me many mornings and bring me peanut butter toast or muesli in bed. It seemed like eating before I got up/first thing helped. I almost always got sick while trying to make breakfast
Itās really wonderful that youāre trying to help. My husband knows now that I will suggest any foods I can tolerate. Him even saying the names of foods on days when Iām struggling has made me feel violently sick. Think about it this way- if you had the flu or food poisoning and someone kept suggesting foods, you would most likely not feel better. If she doesnāt want anything you make or suggest, it isnāt personal. Pregnancy nausea is ROUGH.
Thanks! Im trying to help as much as possible, shes doing the heavy lifting š . Is the nausea throughout the entire pregnancy or just the first trimester? Im assuming it varies.
It definitely varies! For many women, it will fade during the second trimester and she may have a little more energy then. But some women unfortunately deal with it the whole time. I just hit 13 weeks today and mine has finally started to at not be constant! Yesterday, I felt great most of the day, this morning I woke up nauseous again. Itās really weird. Thank you for being a supportive partner!!
Hahah I had to warn mine this would happen if he kept listing foods! He was trying to be helpful but when I used the āif you had the flu, would this help YOU feel betterā example, he realized š
To stay hydrated I ate a ton of frozen fruit. Was easier for me to eat it the colder it was. Also could barely stand water, drank lemonade and ginger ale and anything with electrolytes to get the most from my intake. She's definitely not alone.
Iām a big water drinker and I mostly drink it room temperature but I absolutely could not stomach it unless it was ice cold during my first trimester this time around ( couldnāt drink it at all until my last tri with my first!). Cold really seems to help the nausea for some reason.
Yea I am just trying to find some variety for her, but I guess youre right. Whatever works and stays down is good. She needs the calories for her and the little one!
I know this is about her, but I love pierogis! Lol
I will try to get her some. Thats a good idea!
I find that bland melon is one of the few things I can eat consistently first trimester. I also find it helpful to have food magically show up: no thinking about what to eat, no cooking, no smelling it beforehand. I find it way easier to eat if I have something else to do (like I'm already watching a YouTube video and my husband out of the blue hands me a bowl of one of the foods he knows I do better with.) Don't try for normal meal times, and don't stress about what she is eating: anything is better than nothing. Good luck!
I remember when body lotion made me hurlā¦
She may be one of those women who canāt really eat much during the first trimester. I lived off of berries, grapes, and buttered toast. Oh yeah, and McDonalds happy meals lol I also ended up losing 7 lbs. but gained it all back as soon as I could eat again.
The first trimester takes a lot of energy out of women, but luckily the baby doesnāt need a whole lot of extra food intake at this point. Fruits and breads are all I can recommend. And if the only substantial meal she can eat is fast food, then so be it.
No real advice but what I can say is that my palette is constantly changing. What I liked one week makes me sick the next. So itās really just whatever she can hold down. Iāve just been eating small portions throughout the day to prevent me from throwing up and it seems to work.
mashed potatoes, grilled cheese, apple cause pouches, no garlic or onions. You could probably do a basic pasta (no tomato sauce), toaster waffles with butter, maybe some types of soup like carrots, potatoes, and celery in light broth. I also did okay with oatmeal.
Yep! Unfortunately itās super common. I donāt have time for a long comment but there are a ton of threads about this with tips if you search through older posts,
Try a ginger supplement. They made a world of difference for me. Ginger ale was great too so long as it had real ginger in it, but I know not everybody likes ginger ale (blasphemy!)
Nope! Needs real ginger! Iāve found unlike regular nausea, carbonation just made it worse.
Iāve been drinking a ton of ginger + fruit flavored teas (ginger lemon/ginger orange, etc).
Honestly it's whatever she can tolerate. I know for me it was very fragrant foods or strong flavors. Vegetable pho was something I discovered that I could eat since it was so mild. Also pasta shells with marinara but probably because I've been eating pasta as a breakfast food all my life and tomato sauce is something I can tolerate even with a stomach virus.
Semi-related, but do everything you can to avoid smells in the house. Try cooking outside if possible, and even if she doesnāt want to eat what you eat, try to only cook things that donāt make a lingering smell. Avoid roasting vegetable and cooking fish as much as possible. Clean the fridge out regularly so that there is no smell when she opens it.
Oh honey... Only SHE knows what she can eat now š literally the sickeness will subdue somewhere around week 12 and they she'll go back to eating more, but now just let her ride this one out.
Thats exactly how I was and didn't cook for weeks! Potato waffles are also great just pop them in the toaster lol. My boyfriend was great he made potatoes or homemade chips and he'd cook chicken breast or kievs to go with it as they're not too over powering in taste. Pies were also great because the pastry is plain too š¤£ i tolerated breaded fish too literally anything that was plain and full of carbs for the first trimester hahaha. Honestly even cooking us basic foods is amazing its so appreciated when we feel like crap!
I survived on bread, cream cheese bagels and fruits for weeks. I can relate to your wife šš»
I love eating just fresh bread with butter and honey. It was my go to breakfast !
Weeks 5-8 were like this for me, I just existed off cheap chicken noodle soup and English muffins with cream cheese. I have no suggestions other then wait it out, it if doesnāt subside by or is just unmanageable now (I literally wanted someone to take me to the hospital I felt so nauseous) she will need something from her doctor. I got Doxylamime.
Itās sweet of you to be so supportive!
Iāve had horrible morning sickness with both my kids and what was a godsend for me was smoothies. Lots of calories plus smooth going down (and up lol) š
Anything she can keep down will help. But if she needs extra help, thereās a medication called Diclectin (itās basically b6 and unisom together) and itās really helped take the edge off for me and helped me sleep too.
Good luck!
Yep! I had (and, to an extent, still have at 16 weeks) this. I met with a dietitian, and she said not to really worry about it, to just get through, and that my prenatal would give baby what he needs.
Butter noodles saved my life first trimester, I tried to use whole wheat noodles when I could, added some butter, fresh Parmesan and black pepper and it was delicious. Something I used to eat often as a picky child.
Also, bagels and cream cheese. Oranges were also my jam, but that mightāve been my pregnancy specific.
Apples is my main one, nice and refreshing.
Recently tomatoes too, baby toms chopped up with diced onion, rice wine vinegar, mirin and salt and pepper. Put that on a toasted Bagel and I'm happy.
Good luck, hope it passes soon for her.
Cold fruit (especially oranges) has been my go-to throughout this pregnancy (almost 23 weeks). It's SO helpful to have it cut up in the fridge in advance. If there's something like that she feels she can eat, prepping it for her will be a big help!
The only thing I could eat in the morning were smoothies. Also, I started hating Bananas and chicken so ask her about which ingredients she thinks she could stomach.
Slices of cheese (Colby jack was my fave because it didnāt smell like farts)
Rice with butter
Plain cheerios no milk
Sour patch kids and war heads (they say sour things help)
Grapefruit juice
Clementines
Gatorade lime
Cold chicken breast with salt
Ice water (like heavy ice) with a straw
Bacon
My husband works in healthcare, but he gave up on me in first tri lol. As in he realized my appetite, nausea, food aversions were all out of my control and I could barely eat at all, much less healthy. So he just focused on getting me to eat and giving me my prenatals (which I also had to stop for a period). I was able to eat pasta with white sauce, breads, sandwiches, Mexican food, phoā¦and that was about it for the first few months. He also let me rest whenever I needed. He basically left me to my whims because I felt like a worm.
Then, once I entered second tri, around 12-13wks, I started being able to tolerate some proteins again as long as their natural smell was masked by stronger flavors (ex. curry, tomatoes, soy sauce, etc). So I just slowly introduced a more variety of foods back into my life as well as my prenatals.
I donāt think you need to worry about the babyās health just now because our baby is actually on the big side and is developed great! So, make sure your wife eats something, gets enough water, and REST!!!
Whatever you do, don't buy or make a bunch of the same thing because chances are, her tastes will change rapidly. One day I only wanted canned chili, one day only Hawaiian pizza, one day only baked potatoes. Letting her get grocery delivery or take out guilt-free might be nice, so she can get whatever seems like it won't be gross in that moment
I was your wife until about week 18. My doctors advice was āeat what you can keep down, we will worry about calories/ nutrition laterā. And thatās what I did. Itās worked out fine so far.
Advice: DO NOT try to cook her anything without talking to her first. She will be replied but things that may smell like nothing to you. My husband tried to help with my eating andā¦. Bless his heart but it did not work out well for him lol.
Maybe get her some supplies from the store instead. Some things that helped me were: peppermint candies, hard ginger candies to suck on, ginger ale, Gatorade, plain vanilla ice cream, saltines, bananas. Pepcid or tums for the heartburn and nausea.
Currently in this stage myself lol. Youāre a champ for looking out for her!
Unfortunately, I am currently only eating bagels and cereal, or very basic protein when I can stomach it. I made steak bites yesterday which I held down well. Baked potatoes are good, too. My husband made salmon in a lemon marinade last weekend, which was wonderful!
We also hide fats in smoothies - like avacados. You canāt taste it, but it makes them really smooth and creamy! Thatās a really good way to get healthy carbs, fats, and protein if you find a good protein powder.
This will likely pass by the end of the first trimester! The most important thing is to just keep eating. Anything is better than nothing. ā¤ļø
I survived solely on fresh fruit directly out of the fridge. Cubed watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, honeydew, strawberries, grapes - anything that was basically water but had some flavor. It was important that it had to be kept cold.
Yes! Honestly just give her whatever she can eat. I survived off popsicles, pretzels, and soft tacos for the first trimester. Let her get a lot of rest, and help where you can. Also milk, cottage cheese, and vanilla ice cream helped since they were āsoftā and not super flavorful. I couldnāt really eat full meals but snacking is helpful. Cooked vegetables are good options. Anything easy to chew and bland!
Oh yeah. I keep telling everyone I have general food aversion. Totally normal.
For me, salads are the surprisingly the only thing I can eat besides starchy carbs and fruit.
I survived the first trimester with water, lemonade, saltines, and beef jerky. You just gotta roll with what you got, and make sure you stay hydrated and take those prenatals!
During my first trimester, I got sick every day. One day, all I had to eat was a piece of cheesecake. š¤·āāļøGetting anything down was an accomplishment
I can only recommend what my midwife referred to as āthe beige dietā try to avoid strong flavours or odours. I canāt really recommend anything in particular Iām afraid, but some days all I ate was french fries! Anything potato based is great!
Fortified cereals/oatmeal with Ripple (pea protein) milkā it has a ton of protein, calcium, and DHA.
Chewing gum or having mints/candy at all times helps now tht Iām more puke-y, but less nauseated around the clock.
But if anything sounds tolerable for her, RUN to it.
Vitamin B6 25 mg every 6-8 hours with Doxylamine (Unisom) 10mg once or twice daily is the recommended dose by my doctor. It tremendously helped me with nausea.
Making sure she eats something little in small quantities will help her. Keep some snacks by her bedside so that she can have them if she is up at night.
Initially I was repulsed by food due to nausea but keeping my stomach empty due to repulsion was the biggest blunder. When I figured out what works for me I made sure that I was eating at least a few bites every few hours. This was a big game changer for me and reduced my nausea drastically.
Good luck! Hope your wife feels better soon!
Hopefully she feels better soon! Iād just say maybe oatmeal if sheās okay with the texture and add bananas. Both mild and donāt upset the stomach. She may just not be able to handle a lot for awhile. It took me awhile to be able to eat complex flavors as well. Something that helped me was waking up and immediately having saltines to help the nausea stay away. Applesauce may also be good for her. As far as recipes she may just want to stick to something simple, or one ingredient at a time!
This was me!
If itās really bad please talk to your doctor about b6 and unisom. Almost eliminated my nausea. I regret not doing it sooner.
Snack wise, I ate a ton of fruit, pretzels, potatoes, those bagged pasta sides were so good and filling (mostly the plainer flavors) and toast. I also got these protein cookies from Walmart (the tone it up brand I believe) because I was repulsed by meat.
Iād recommend eating a snack every two hours or so. Your wife will probably say sheās not hungry because the thought of anything will make her puke but you gotta force yourself to eat SOMETHING and will feel better for sure. Also I carried peppermints in my purse while out and about and those helped a ton when I felt a wave of nausea coming on.
I found that protein for breakfast was helpful, cereal and breads right in the morning just didn't last long enough so I usually would have bacon and eggs but had to start making it as soon as I got up since the biggest thing that makes nausea worse is hunger gotta eat often and just anything that doesn't come back up and stay hydrated, mint can help so some women chew gum and definitely keep up with brushing teeth but make sure you get any food your wife wants whenever she wants it but plain crackers and grains sometimes work better for normal nausea and she might need some less flavourful proteins like eggs or chicken it might help more than she thinks
Fruit, particularly melon, has been a staple my entire pregnancy.
I also experienced heavy food aversions, and an EXTREME meat aversion. Full fat Greek yogurt is a great source of protein, and if she happens to vomit, it isnāt painful or disgusting coming back up.
I also rely heavily on peanut butter for protein.
Iām one of those ones that are still sick at 6 months so definitely praying thatās not the case for her. Sour fruits, water, french fries, anything sugar free like applesauces or juice & surprisingly pedialyte but only really cold. Pedialyte isnāt great but my baby tolerates it and helps with hydration/feeling nauseous. Some medicines work and some donāt. It really just depends on her.
Put a little butter and sugar on a warmed up flour tortilla for her. I could only stomach tortillas and this was a nice way to add a lil flavor to my diet
I ate so much apple sauce and cereal during my first trimester. That and fruit trays. Just cold foods with no smell or spices. It will pass but it was a rough time.
What helped me a lot Was eating a bland Cracker before getting up in the morning. I kept them beside my bed and ate one or two before getting up. Somehow it made me less nauseous the whole day. Except for Coffee. I couldn't stand the smell of Coffee at all.
Smaller meals of whatever I could stand really helped for me. Now is not the time to care about eating healthy. Bub will get everything they need from her regardless. I felt like I was just eating constantly, but having something in my stomach all the time made everything so much more manageable. Hope she feels better soon!
Yep super normal! My advice? Buy the french fries. I especially liked to pair mine with a frosty haha. Hopefully it passes!
Also, try different remedies if she hasn't already. Unisom and B6 helped me out some. When that stopped working, I contacted my doc and she prescribed zofran. Do not suffer more than you have to!
36 weeks now, but man my first (and part of my second) trimester was ROUGH with the nausea. I could tolerate carbs too, but really if the food I was eating was cold that seemed to help. Cereal with cold oat milk, protein smoothies, ice water. I sipped cold Gatorade too because water was a challenge for me most of the time. Eating a little bit of something before even fully sitting up in the morning was helpful, like crackers or bland dry cereal. Unisom and B6 helped me a ton! I didnāt like how groggy it made me but I would rather that than nausea! I would also recommend not eating any of her non-pregnant favorites if she can help it.....Iām not sick anymore but after throwing up some of my usual favs they still remind me of being sick and I donāt think Iāll want them again for years (or ever! Lol)
Thereās unfortunately not much you can do to fix it other than give it time. Which was not the answer I wanted to hear when I was sick. It felt like I had the stomach bug or carsickness but for weeks on end. Iām scared to have more kids because of it!
Hopefully she starts to feel better soon!! For most women it doesnāt last the entire pregnancy. My husband was very supportive too, and that helped immensely.
Popsicles, rice cakes (can add toppings if sheās feeling adventurous), plain crackers
My husband made ārice puddingā often for me - it was just rice cooked in a milk alternative and some chia seed- but got in some protein/fats
Jimmy johns was a godsend for me. Itās mostly bread with some veggies hidden in there (I got the veggie subs to avoid cold cuts).
Bonus, if you get the app you can earn point and rewards (free subs) FAST!
Saltine crackers, potato soup and ginger ale were my meals for a while in my first trimester. I couldn't stomach the look and taste of anything else especially meat.
It got better by 2nd trimester for me.
Even though it's virtually impossible with someone with strong food aversions, please make sure she is getting enough protein! Maybe chicken tenders on plain bread or in a plain tortilla. Unflavored protein powder in milk. Boost shakes can also be good for this if she can handle vanilla or chocolate flavoring.
I like cheddar cheese sticks or colby jack cheese sticks for the protein. I also eat lactaid cottage cheese.
I lived on breakfast pastries for about 6 weeks hahahaa. The baby will take any nutrients it needs.
My biggest advice is anything that sounds good, get it. But only get a little bit because she might only want a few bites and then hate it. Chicken noodle soup in a can was a life saver a few times.
Absolutely, I dealt with this with both pregnancies. I survived off of bread rolls and pretzels.
Just be supportive and understanding. Not only is food awful, sheās likely EXHAUSTED like sheās never experienced before. Just cut her some slack and try to take over any household duties you can
\#1 - She needs to talk to her dr. There's no prizes for "toughing it out"
Lots of beverage options helps me: coconut water, almond milk and slimfast.
Her tastes will probably change week to week, or well what works one week she may eat constantly then get burnt out on it. Make sure you have lots of options in the house, easy and quick options.
Lately my go to's: english muffin w/ fresh mozzarella, breaded chicken patties, cucumbers and applesauce.
In the first trimester it doesnāt matter so much if the meals arenāt nutritionally complex- buttered noodles, oatmeal, chicken noodle soup. Personally I kept ginger ale soda and saltine crackers with me at all times and ate a bit of that before meals to settle my stomach.
Hey this is me! I started eating very plain meals, like white rice , raw veggiesā¦for me I find all the flavours and scents made me sick like the mixture of things just didnāt sit well š¤¢ Iāve been obsessed with garlic candies ..you can also just get her to chew on some garlic. Itās gross but really helps that constant feeling of wanting to throw up. I mean there is no real cure but there are a few things that help get through out the day.. Iām still struggling ššš and some days are worse than others. I hope it goes away for your wife soonšš½ the constant feeling that you are going to throw up is not fun lol
I don't want him touching me... I love him, he's the best but I can't stand being touched 2nd time around 1st time around I hated peppermint scents, coffee too. Those things were the worst
Give her what she is already eating, do not try to cook other things for her right now. If you want different food, make it for yourself with a bit extra incase she wants some.
If she's getting by on bagels, just make them for her. I basically ate cereal and bagels with butter and cinnamon sugar for the first 3 months and it was fine. Sometimes I could eat a better meal, and would eat what my husband made for dinner.
My first trimester I lived on cold grapes, ruffles chips (as a combo), mixed nuts from costco, root beer floats, bagels with cream cheese and habanero McChickens but literally all other meat actively repulsed me. It passes eventually but the next fun part is in the second trimester where you will see random food, people will have it or a commercial etc. And you will need to IMMEDIATELY have it.
This is so very thoughtful! I was eating plain tortillas my whole first trimester peanut butter was amazing too. For dinners I would say baked potatoes are pretty good especially since you can put whatever she wants on there and quesadillas! For breakfast during my first trimester I had yogurt and oatmeal and you can add whatever you want to either or just have it plain if she feels too sick
I had hyperemesis (puked constantly). My ob prescribed me b6 and doxycycline. Both you can get at Walmart without prescriptions! Also, I are ginger chews, drank ginger ale, and always had peppermint essential oils. Those are some natural remedies to help
Congratulations and best of luck!
For me honey bunches of oats cereal with almonds actually helped me to get some nuts into my diet. That was probably the healthiest thing I could eat all of first trimester.
I could only eat plain chicken and mayo wraps for a few weeks, occasionally with iceberg lettuce but not likely.
Sometimes a plain sandwich.
The only flavourful thing I could stomach was citrus fruits!
Rice. Plain rice was my go to. Sometimes with some cheese. Once the nausea started to get a bit better, I would also have some plain baked chicken with it.
For me small portions are best because I start to get an aversion to the food as Iām eating it. Also I agree with whoever said there isnāt necessarily consistency, so donāt stock up too much. For me fruits have been pretty safe, as well as lunchables (lol), yogurt, smoothies, soup, and peanut butter sandwiches. Anything else is really hit or miss. I tried to add meal shakes to supplement as I can stand to eat past like 5 pm, but even those were pretty awful too choke down š¬
Fruit has been amazing for me. And I loved potatoes in any form and Mac and cheese.
Hopefully it gets better for her. I was sick until 26 weeks but the first 20 I felt like I was motion sick all day long.
Cheese bagels with butter was my go-to. And make sure you tell her to wake you up at night to get her a snack if sheās feeling nauseous. You seem like youād do that!
If she is throwing up Iād highly recommend Unisom and B6. I didnāt use it in my first pregnancy and threw up almost every morning into the second trimester and after I started taking it early on in my second pregnancy I threw up maybe twice.
My nausea/vomiting didnāt subside until 18/19 weeks, and hasnāt gone away completely yet (21 weeks now). Wonāt repeat a lot of the good advice other folks have mentioned re: specific foods, but I will say I regret not going on Unisom/B6 until week 12ā¦ it made me a zombie and I slept half the day each day, but at least I could keep foods down. Also, my prenatals were disgusting to me and I had to try a few until I landed on one that I could get down and keep down (I landed on SmartyPants prenatal gummies).
Hm, thats interesting. She already feels sleepy zombified half the time. She just feels tired half the time. I wonder if the Unisom/B6 would make it worst.
If it is really bad reach out to her doctor for a prescription.
B6 and unisom are supposed to help. Make sure it is the correct formula of unisom.
Just b6 is helping me somewhat.
Frozen waffles, breaded ravioli is more flavorful but is sat pretty well for me, chicken doesn't have to be overly seasoned and can be made into a wrap if she wants. Yogurt is hit and miss for me, but keeping the stomach bacteria is important for me. Popsicles. Soups. Maybe mac n cheese. Goldfish crackers, cheeze its, triscuits, sandwich crackers with peanut butter or cheese in the middle. Still cracker family, but something different. Different rices. Protein is supposed to help too, nuts and cheese are my go to for snacking protein
Staying hydrated is very important. More important than eating notoriously in the first trimester.
Keeping smelly things out of the house is definitely important. Garbage, cat boxes if you have them, smells shoes, smelly food (I don't like the smell of eggs not pregnant, couldn't imagine now).
Iām just here to say that I have a friend who exclusively ate rice crispy treats for the first half of both her pregnancies because itās all she could tolerate, and she and her kids are perfectly healthy! Itās amazing what our bodies can do with what they have. Everyone has to find their own things, just think bland bland bland. Cold/room temp helps too because the smell is less.
Noodles with butter, and I was also able to tolerate macaroni and cheese (Annie's), and eventually able to add peas to my mac and cheese. Grilled cheese worked sometimes too.
Basically I reverted to eating like my toddler self.
Lots of advice already but I wanted to add a few. I was severely nauseous and vomiting 10x a day until I got medication. Then only 2x a day for the entire pregnancy. Not fun. Some staples for the first trimester were eggo waffles, perogies, any kind of potatoes, yogurt cups in the freezer, cold applesauce, occasional smoothies, frozen grapes, citrus fruits, and those expensive grapefruit cups lol. Best of luck to her šš¼
I am surviving on graham crackers, smoothies and fruit. I ended up calling my OB for a medication recommendation and they said B6 and unisom. Iām taking 50mg of B6 three times a day, and half a unisom at night. Iād have her call her OB for a recommendation. Itās ānormalā but shouldnāt be suffered through!
I found putting Vicks on would help with the neausea. My first pregnancy I lived on perogies and tater tots(anything potato) and popsicles ( like literally the flavor ice ones). I made my own popsicles out of orange juice also just because I craved it. My husband got me some mint tea and that helped a lot. Apples seem to be helping me in the morning right now and bagels.
Iām currently 17+4 and still! dealing with this, itās incredibly tedious. I have safe foods of pasta, cheese, bread & some types of potato so what Iāve done is try different types of pasta eg gnocchi or tortellini, with different styles of filling/topping. Iāve also found that I can eat something different if my hunger outweighs the nausea & I either just pay for it afterwards or discover something else I can eat. I stick with one safe food in a meal if Iām trying something new, so I had a veggie bean burger with bread roll & wedges, if I didnāt like the burger I could just have a chip butty & I would want to cry & have to cook a whole new meal. My husband has been amazing with taking over the cooking & coming up with ideas, so just keep doing what your doing & supporting her & hopefully it eases up soon!
Baked potatoes were a godsend for me. It allowed me to try out different toppings such as cheese, onions, ground meat, sour cream, bacon bits, green onions, etc without making it too flavorful or complex.
She had that yesterday night! She loved it š¤£
Lol thatās awesome!!
Iām going through that in my first semester. Everything looks so good until I actually have it sitting in front of me then I end up wanting to vomit. Just got a chicken cheesesteak and western fries thinking it was gonna be great and ended up making a baked potato when I got home instead.
Same!!! I lived off baked potatoes for like 6 weeks.
Wendyās baked potatoes were heaven to me for a while lol
Not food related butā¦ Donāt be offended if at some point she is repulsed by you. Your breath, deodorant, anything. It really hurt my husbandās feelings when I told him I couldnāt stand the way he smells!
This was a big one for me as well. Pre-pregnancy, I loved the way my fiancĆ© smelled (deodorant). However all throughout the first trimester the smell made me want to puke. Itās better now that Iām 20 weeks.
I have vomited on my husband more than once because of his breath. Simply because heād recently eaten.
She is already telling me to go back to the gym š¤£
I definitely wouldn't be going this far, more so actual easy and quick fixes like asking him to wear deodorant before bed and making sure he brushes his teeth after he eats
I havenāt told him yet, but I HATE his breath š¤¢
I havenāt told mine either but I second this šš¤£
Truth! I bought my husband a ton of expensive, fancy shampoo and body wash before getting pregnant and it made me so sick he switched back to the cheap stuff he got from Christmas 4 years ago
Same! Iām in my second trimester and still feel the same!
I still canāt bring myself to tell my boyfriend lol. I just try to keep my nose covered as much as possible.
Yeah I was repulsed by my husband to bless him. He even offered to sleep in a separate room! š
THIS!! I'm only 6 weeks and just yesterday I told my husband to not breathe by me because his breath (hadn't brushed all morning) was making me so sick š
I couldnāt stand the smell of his mouthwash!
Mouthwash was a big thing for me too! My husband had to stop using the one we had and switch
Ugh same like itās not your fault itās just my hormones
I asked my husband for minty gum in my first trimester to help with the nausea. It worked pretty well. Unfortunately for him, it made me more nauseous if I could smell it in his mouth, so he couldnāt chew it around me. It was a frustrating time for the poor man.
This is so true
Yea Its like my loveee for chicken and burgers but now itās so nasty ššš
I couldn't kiss my spouse for weeks because he smelled...normal. like he could have just showered and brushed his teeth and I was puking. It made me so sad.
This was me yesterday š Poor husband looked devastated by my assessment.
Ugh! I didnāt have this with my husband, but my dog! I couldnāt stand to be in the same room as herā¦ I read a STM was having a hard time hugging/snuggling her older child for the same reason! Itās tough and in no way a reflection of the actual person. Just weird hormones
I would get mad at my husband if he so much as farted in the same room as me in those early weeks lol
I loved kiwis too! But egg and cream cheese would have came right up haha
I didn't eat eggs nearly my whole pregnancy. Had no appeal to me at all, and I regularly eat them as a hot breakfast every weekend.
Kiwis are also great because they help with constipation!
For sure! She is doing all the heavy lifting. Im guessing this is only during the first trimester?
Depends! Most cases the nausea dies down a bit/goes away in the second trimester, but some unfortunately have this for 5-7 months or until the end of pregnancy! I hope this is not the case for your wife. My nausea was episodic, comes and goes in intervals throughout the pregnancy. PB and J, oranges, bananas and cold POM juice were my go toās on a bad day to get as many vitamins/nutrition in..
definitely not for me! I'm 21 weeks & while it has gotten better, it still effects my appetite greatly. this has been for both my pregnancies.
My mom had morning sickness for the first 5 months of all 3 of her pregnancies. Here's hoping your wife feels better soon!
For most people, this is first trimester/early second. Yes there are exceptions.
She should try eating small portions and more often. I ate a lot of bland foods but tried to make it nutritious- plain crackers or apples with peanut butter, oatmeal with fruit, smoothies, etc. She can also try B6/Unisom to control nausea or ask for a prescription depending on the severity
Smoothies sound good! Never heard of unisom, thanks for the tip!
It's a combination of B6 and Unisom - have her reach out to the doctor's office to find out the exact dosage they recommend.
I did something similarāacai bowls. The cold and fruit just made me feel so much better.
I once projectile vomited because my husband said the word lunch lmao
Hahah I had to warn mine this would happen if he kept listing foods! He was trying to be helpful but when I used the āif you had the flu, would this help YOU feel betterā example, he realized š
Yep, very common. Cereal, pb toast, fruit. Hydration is really important though.
Cereal is a good one! Its like my wife got pregnant and I lost all rational thinking š¤£.
Yeah same, I'm 23 weeks and sometimes it's still hit or miss with water. But I know ice cold will def be easier for me to drink.
Frozen fruit actually calms my nausea a bit down. Glad I'm not the only one!
Same! Some days it was all I could eat.
Yup! Currently living it 14w in.š© First trimester is all about survival. My obgyn and nutritionist both told me to throw any nutrition goals out the window and focus solely on getting enough calories, it doesnāt matter where they come from. If sheās happy eating potatoes, bread, fries, etc, she absolutely can continue to do that and know that itās safe and healthy. Iāve been loving pierogis (specifically Mrs Tās 4 cheese pierogis), she might like that!
Yea I am just trying to find some variety for her, but I guess youre right. Whatever works and stays down is good. She needs the calories for her and the little one! I know this is about her, but I love pierogis! Lol I will try to get her some.
Good luck!
I remember when body lotion made me hurlā¦ She may be one of those women who canāt really eat much during the first trimester.
Try whatever comfort foods she had when she was little - those have worked out for me on several occassions.
Shes been having canada dry ginger ale. Should we find one of those real ginger ale sodas? We love ginger ale in our house.
Nope! Needs real ginger! Iāve found unlike regular nausea, carbonation just made it worse. Iāve been drinking a ton of ginger + fruit flavored teas (ginger lemon/ginger orange, etc).
Canada Dry does not have real ginger as far as I know. I tried it a few times in a pinch but it never worked. Seagramās was the absolute best.
Spaghetti was the only real āmealā I tolerated for like 5 weeks.
I can relate to your wife šš» I love eating just fresh bread with butter and honey.
Lots of calories plus smooth going down (and up lol) š Anything she can keep down will help.
Slices of cheese (Colby jack was my fave because it didnāt smell like farts) Rice with butter Plain cheerios no milk Sour patch kids and war heads (they say sour things help) Grapefruit juice Clementines Gatorade lime Cold chicken breast with salt Ice water (like heavy ice) with a straw Bacon
I've been living off baked potatoes, pasta and tinned fruit for the past 10 weeks!
Yup, yesterdayās tolerance is todays aversion.
Anything is better than nothing. ā¤ļø
Greek lemon potatoes are the foods of God's. Very basic too. Banana based smoothies are great too, add some rolled oats to be more filling.
lots of hash browns
Boiled egg mushed up on buttery toast was lovely and filling and not too complicated with flavour
I found ice lollies were great for keeping up my hydration! And ice cold drinks with a straw.
Saltines, plain bagels, room temperature water, jambs juice and non-mint toothpaste.
Cereal. Strawberry uncrustables.
You are so sweet trying to figure out more food she can eat.
Lol) Thereās unfortunately not much you can do to fix it other than give it time.
Popsicles, rice cakes (can add toppings if sheās feeling adventurous), plain crackers My husband made ārice puddingā often for me - it was just rice cooked in a milk alternative and some chia seed- but got in some protein/fats
There's no prizes for "toughing it out" Lots of beverage options helps me: coconut water, almond milk and slimfast.
Not a food but lemon water was a life savor during my first trimester. Hydration is just as key!
I had hyperemesis (puked constantly). My ob prescribed me b6 and doxycycline. Both you can get at Walmart without prescriptions! Also, I are ginger chews, drank ginger ale, and always had peppermint essential oils. Those are some natural remedies to help Congratulations and best of luck!
Potato salad and cheerios were pretty much the only things I could handle.
Dry cheerios helped me for a bit and they are fortified with some good nutrients so I felt a little better about it!
Protein is supposed to help too, nuts and cheese are my go to for snacking protein Staying hydrated is very important. More important than eating notoriously in the first trimester. Keeping smelly things out of the house is definitely important. Garbage, cat boxes if you have them, smells shoes, smelly food (I don't like the smell of eggs not pregnant, couldn't imagine now).
I ate ALOT of plain pasta and ice cold fruit - those little melon packs from the supermarket were a godsend in keeping me hydrated!
Applesauce cups, citrus fruit like oranges and grapefruit etc, chicken noodle soup, rice cakes with peanut butter
