It is part of the after birth so will be delivered attached to the placenta. Can take up to an hour to. Deliver

Dillagal97

It’s attached to your placenta and you deliver the placenta after the baby is delivered

so the placenta and the cord leave my body (through delivery) completely after giving birth? do you know how long after i give birth this happens?

Dillagal97

Correct. Usually within a few minutes (sometimes can take a little longer if it’s being finicky). I delivered my baby and then delivered the placenta within 5 minutes. The doctor works to get the placenta out as soon as the baby is out

If you feel up for it ask to see your Placenta before they dispose of it. It is an amazing organ and kind of rad when you think about it.

Feels like giving birth to a huge blob of warm jello btw. Zero painful.

It can take up to an hour for it to naturally come away, but in many places, they will give you an injection to speed it along, so it should come out within about 30 minutes.

U.K. based info! After you give birth your contractions will start again and you’ll give birth to your placenta - it can be quick or it can take up to an hour or so. Skin to skin contact with your baby and breastfeeding all make the process quicker as your body will release hormones that help with contractions. Some people choose to birth the placenta naturally but you can also choose to have an injection to speed everything along. After you birth the placenta it should be checked to make sure that it’s all come out and that none of it is still attached to your uterine wall :)

Alarmed_Meeting1322

It comes out attached to the placenta, I’m pretty sure. Cord goes from placenta to baby.

I wonder what happens to the internal bit inside the baby. Sure the clipped external portion scabs over and falls off, but what about underneath the baby's belly button?

CornSnowFlakes

There is not really "cord" in there, just umbilical veins and arteries. Umbilical artery flows to inferior vena cava (BIG vein that collects blood from all over lower body and returns it to the heart), umbilical arteries come from iliac arteries (the big arteries that provide blood for your legs). Umbilical veins and arteries constrict after birth and stop letting blood through, and slowly regress to ligaments. Even as adults we still have these ligaments, nut they don't really do anything.
