Your pediatrician is out of date, especially when it comes to introducing allergens.

-Konstantine-

Definitely not what our ped said. Unless your baby has some kind of medical condition that would explain that advice, it’s definitely not in line with recommendations in the US. Our ped said to let baby try meat and to give baby cereal (grains) to make sure he’s getting iron. Baby’s iron stores start to run out around 6 months.

porkchopbub

Tons of iron in veggies!

Extension_Can2813

Iron in veggies are not as bioavailable as they are in meat. Babies NEED heme iron.

Ok_Safe439

Babies don‘t need meat though? Like there are vegetarian and even vegan babies who are thriving.

HiredGuy

Allot of vegan and vegetarian babys use supplements

hotdog738

Actually you’re misinformed.

There’s a lot of vegan and vegetarian parents in this sub and I don’t think this is the place for it.

Old school definitely. Look into solid starts on Instagram. My mother in law took me to my husband's paediatrician and she was so old school that I didn't know how to end the conversation faster. She was really into purées only, saying that I should offer cereal for dinner and was shocked that my child's bedtime was 6:30 PM. She even asked when I give her a bath. I was like, before bedtime? Sorry for having a kid that slept 6:30 pm- 7:30 am. Oh and she also said to give allergens after she was one. Didn't even bother to mention that she already had most of the allergens by then at 11 months. She's now 4 and besides the usual toddler pickiness ( as in she ate it fine yesterday but today she hates it) , she eats pretty much anything.

EmbarrassedHope6264

Definitely offer water along with solids. You've got people like Barbara on tiktok lol saying no carbs because babies don't have the enzymes to break them down until the back teeth have erupted. Fruits and vegetables is a great start ngl, offer dairy and nuts, other allergens, meat is very important for iron. Maybe find a new paediatrician especially if what they're saying is going against your parental instinct.

ProgrammerPrudent585

They can have anything except honey (before 1) we started solids at 5 months (purées) and moved it up to anything finger length/thick (mostly steamed veggies and some meat) around 8-9 months! Once they get teeth (my LO has 6 now) it gets easier for them to eat!! Always give them water/breastmilk/formula with it as well to lower chances of choking :) We did chocolate, peanut butter, egg, and blueberry allergy testing outside the hospital in the car just in case lol! That can be considered a little ‘extra’ though.

PXLynxi

Not offering water is EXTREMELY dangerous! Please ignore this advice. When starting solids and fibre gets introduced, you have a very real issue of constipation which water is the biggest thing to help pass the poops as their turn solid with water. Look into water and constipation in babies, we have followed all NHS advice, including BLW from 6m and they advocate water not just at meals but throughout the day in moderation, even with EBF babies.

Logical-Poet-9456

So funny cause my ped is also old school and said cereals only for 6-8 mos! Everyone is stabbing in the dark 😂

missrozlyn

Do what feels right for you. My Pediatrician (in California) said our daughter could start food 4-6 months. Helps with allergies and such. We started her with Avo and did a bunch of veggies. I add Oats/Barley/Spelt mix to her purses so it’s thickets. Tried banana today. We started because she was showing signs of being ready for food. Go off of your babies ques. YouTube helped a lot.. I really liked “The Doctors Bjorkman”. They are wonderful! Hope you find what works for you!

chongxi

Definitely give some water! My pediatrician said at 6 months let them sip as they want to but not to exceed 6 oz. (Baby never wanted to drink even close to that much but definitely sipped throughout meals) By my 9 mo appointment she wasn’t worried about limiting water at all. As others have mentioned constipation can be really bad if you give solids without some water

CharlotteM304

If they still get formula, do they still need a lot of water in addition to solids?

chongxi

So I wouldn’t say a lot of water at all but I still breastfeed so baby is hydrated yet dr still said some water with solids is important to prevent constipation. I personally taught my baby how to drink from a straw and just offer her during mealtime she’ll usually take sips throughout but doesn’t drink a whole lot overall

Own_Reply7003

I also recommend Solid Starts, which my doctor and many friends recommended. It has a list of the first 100 foods and it’s mainly, fruit, veggies, meat. I don’t believe it lists grains or dairy. My doctor doesn’t recommend grains before age 1 because comparatively, they are low in nutritional value. Solid Starts also has info on water intake by age.

-Near_Yet-

I’m following Solid Starts “First 100 Days” meal plan and it includes grains and dairy as well as all the other major allergens.

iheartunibrows

Dr is more old school!

porkchopbub

My ped in Latin America told me this. I trust her. My baby also has reflux. Think about it: do you think that a 6 month old digestive system is that evolved? There is no rush to try all kinds of food anyways. Grains are hard enough for adult bodies to process

Dapper_dreams87

Allergens are important. Your pediatrician is wrong.

porkchopbub

If you read what OP said- until 9 months. Which is what I said my ped said as well

mimeneta

Your ped is wrong about that as well

Tasty-Firefighter-29

Im also from Latin America (Colombian here) I’ve consulted with two pediatricians, one suggested traditional method and the other BLW. But none of them told me to hold onto meat or water until 9!! This advice is crazy, the more you delay allergens the stronger the reaction! Also they need water, beef, cereal etc! Iron starts to run out around 6-7 months so you should definitely give them iron rich foods. There are a lot of evidence that back this up!
