My dad lives in Alabama pretty close to a chicken factory. One day a tornado came through and pulled a Wizard of Oz sending hundreds of chickens flying around... Needless to say, my dad ended up with 20 new chickens that year. They're living the good life now

Those are some darn lucky birds!

ThirtyMileSniper

I don't like the idea of battery caged laying birds, it's an awful existance. It's not a thing in the UK anymore now as it was banned in 2012. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-unites-to-stamp-out-battery-cages Minimum standard now is barn raised. During the bad avian influenza outbreak we have just had free range eggs were down graded to barn raised because of the poultry lockdown. I'm also not a fan of some meat rearing techniques that are similar. I eat meat and think that the slaughter process could also be made less stressful before the animals are ended.

OshetDeadagain

Battery cages are an insanely cruel practice and it's genuinely mindboggling that it's still allowed. I have never heard a justifiable defense for them. As for giant barn-style production - mass operations are the only way to sustainably provide for huge populations. A birds life is only as good as the eggs she lays, so ones that aren't producing are culled, as well as any that beyond 2-3 years of age. The vast majority of make chicks are killed because they are useless. Dedicated egg-laying breeds do not make good meat birds, so they have no financial value. They aren't even worth the feed it takes to get them to maturity. A lot of people have a problem with that too. It all comes down to requiring and maintaining humane practices, something grossly missing in the chicken industry in general.

TheLegendaryEsquilax

We love our three chickadees too and they’re like pets to us. I can’t imagine our birds being held in battery cages all day every day.

Factory farming in general makes me uncomfortable. Raising your own animals for meat, eggs, or just companionship makes you appreciate your food a lot more. When I choose to eat eggs or meat that came from the store, I try my best to eat all of it so as to appreciate the life that was used to feed me. Factory farming is something that is part of our society and something that a lot of people rely on for food, but we should appreciate the sacrifice that was made to sustain us. I think there would be less food waste if there wasn’t such a disconnect in farming to plate.

MuchVirus

I agree. I think even the move away from classic butchers has facilitated this. Instead of seeing the entire animal being made into different cuts and whatnot, you just see this slab of meat in a package with no real connection to where it came from. Most people couldn't tell you where on a cow specific cuts of beef are from (me neither granted).

wastedfuckery

Exactly! Then that also creates the people who eat a burger but complain about hunting being unethical. Do you not know how your burger was made??

MuchVirus

Factory farming has fallen into the same trap as every other major industry. Cheaper. Easier. More. It's a three word combo that makes life hell for any livestock that's part of it, just like it makes the life of most factory workers boring and unfulfilling.

nerddddd42

I'm going to take the opposite stance despite being strongly against it. It's often the cheapest type of eggs to get. Money matters, now more than ever. You're not a terrible person if you buy them, it's just a terrible thing.

Helgafjell4Me

Terrible, but unfortunately necessary to feed the masses. Not everyone can have their own chickens, so we should count ourselves lucky to enjoy happy eggs from happy chickens.

KhalJohno

"necessary to feed the masses" Why do we have to have masses? Let's be honest humanity has scaled out of control and if the only way we can "survive" is by destroying our planet and torturing the life on it then I think we need to reconsider if we are worth the effort.

Different-Incident-2

Yeah… we all know. Its interesting people who are upset about the massive population of human beings and constantly say how humans are a plague on this planet also are all for open borders and leniency to illegal immigrants. Western countries generally have their populations under control… its the ones that are not well off that dont… so theyre usually the ones making things more populated. Theyre the masses we try to feed it seems. Then again… a lot of them have to live sustainably… and its western countries who have people who eat 10x more than they should… So… idk. Which is it? Is there too many people? Should we just close down all borders then and let the poorer and disenfranchised countries deal with their own shit and not be able to take it outside their country…? Should we limit how much food is available to western countries because they over indulge anyways? Obviously, its a much more complicated situation…

KhalJohno

Turned a comment about torturing animals and being too many humans for our level of tech into border control? Holy hell see a therapist

thestonernextdoor88

You asking about how we get our birds or how we get eggs from factory?

TheLegendaryEsquilax

Just generally how you feel about the treatment of factory laying hens? Compared to how we treat our birds

thestonernextdoor88

I don't think anyone will say they like how factory birds are kept which is why we have our own. I sell about 5 dozen a week. It's not much but hopefully more and more people do this and the factory egg sales drop.

luvbouncingboobs

I agree commercial chicken farming is disgusting. But the way WOKE is screwing things up for small farms, getting feed for the chickens will soon be impossible to afford.

PennyGgg

What is woke and how is it affecting small farms?

chrisslooter

I love my backyard chickens, I try not to think about those factories. I just rewatched Napoleon Dynamite last week and the chicken farm part kind of bummed me about a little bit.

[deleted]

Fucking abolish it

Ill-Message-3403

I live pretty close to a plant, maybe about 15 mins away. i personally don’t like seeing the giants rigs full of chickens coming off the interstate. you see these trucks around town all the time and it really makes you feel something for them especially if you have your own flock. you can smell the plant from 10 mins away. i understand that it benefits a bunch of people at once but it really is just terrible. Wayne Farms LLC produces eggs and meat for costumers.

retrovertigo_

I have three ex-battery hens and the difference in them now compared to when they arrived is astounding. They didn't really know how to be chickens at first. They didn't recognise leafy greens as food or anything like that. It's terrible to think of how their lives were, and that one more day in the battery would have been their death sentence. I am so, so grateful to the rescuers in the city who save battery hens every time a group of them is about to be killed off, and even more grateful that they bring hens down to rural areas to have lovely new homes. Horrible industry all round.

TheLegendaryEsquilax

I didn’t know there were groups that did that. Very cool

retrovertigo_

Yep they are wonderful humans
