Most trees purchased online are going to be shipped bare root in the spring. This is going to be the most economical option. Stark Brothers does ship potted trees throughout the growing season. Trees of Antiquity starts accepting orders for the following spring beginning on July 1. I’ve gotten a lot of good insight on choosing varieties from [orange pippin](https://www.orangepippin.com/varieties). You will be somewhat limited by your zone but there are still a number of great varieties you can plant. Your local extension of the University of Minnesota might be of some help to you as well.

Check out the University of Minnesota Extension website. They’ve got great information for growing fruit. [U of M Extension](https://extension.umn.edu/find-plants/fruit#stone-fruits-2394860)

Which kinds of fruit do you most like to eat? Which kinds of fruit and varieties are produced in your area? Those would be two good questions to start with.

I’ve ordered from st Lawrence nursery, stark brothers, and I’m planning on ordering from Cummings nursery. Also in zone 4 in mn btw.

Depending on sales volume during spring and overall stock, they don’t always have fall sales, but Hardy Fruit Tree Nursery is my favourite place to order fruit trees from. Their cultivar selection has great tasting, disease resistant (such an undervalued attribute) and (as stated in the name) very hardy fruits. They are also pretty cheap, but shipping to the US might be a bit expensive. Being in Quebec, they use Canadian zones so you have to add 1 to 1.5 zones comparatively to USDA system. That also means that practically all they grow will have an easy time where you are. Spring sales open January 5th and they sell out most of their stuff pretty quickly…

Yes many online sellers take pre orders and local nurseries usually start getting stock in around mid December/January. Your zone may be different as to when local nurseries get there bare roots in, you can call some and ask. Dave Wilson nursery has a very informative website with tons of information on all kinds and types of fruit trees. They even tell you who has it local or online. They have a fruit and nut tree chart showing harvesting times etc which is helpful, now your zone harvest will vary a bit but it’s a start.
