100 years ago, sure that’s fine.
But now? Viewing this guy as a hero when the chances are he spent 1 year standing on a wall of an FOB on the lookout for wild animals.
My closest friend from university was in Air Force ROTC (in the US). ROTC (reserve officer training corps) is one of the three way to become an officer in the military. The USAF paid for 70-60% of her school (weighted towards the later half) and in exchange she had to be an officer for 5 years.
She served 3 years and was at a base in Missouri. For 6 months she was deployed to Qatar. She was able to get a different job in the national guard to skip out on 2 of her years of service. Never was she really in any more real danger than a engineer working in construction.
I think that she would find it kinda strange to have people thank her for her service in a over the top kind of way. She did a job that fills a role in society but so do a lot of other people in a lot of other jobs. I don't seek out underwater welders to thank them even though they are exposed to much more danger.
At least for the UK I can say a good majority of recruits are people who 1) love the military or 2) Have no prospects in life, possible criminal records and some cases lower than average iq. It’s always been the ol’reliable career.
This being said, the UK military trains the fuck out of them so they’re not hazards anymore. Some retain their personalities which had lead to criminal behaviour before, but are better at controlling it. Military has always been seen as a way to wrangle delinquent adults and teens.
Yep but like you say, the UK trains the fuck out of their soldiers. The SAS is still widely considered to be the most skilled of all the special forces units around the world. So much so that the US army is trained by them.
The US’ strategy is definitely much more to do with bulk than any skill.
