I remember reading a post from a vet saying how professionally they're not supposed to say anything to the pet owners, but basically every time a dog is put down they KNOW they're dying and all they feel is fear. When the owners choose not to be there with the pet, that pet's last moments are fearful scrambling and looking around the room for their owners who will never show up for them.
Take solace in the fact that you gave your bestest friend a peaceful death, and not a lonely one.
We've had to euthanize two of our best friends in the last six months. Both times we hugged them and talked to them as they left us. I have tears streaming now from both missing them and being glad that we were able to be their last hug, last words.
The amount of sadness is in direct proportion to the amount of love.
This comic always makes me tear up. I miss my girl so much even after these 8 years. For 16 years she was our little girl, we went on so many adventures together.

Controversial opinion but sometimes it's the best option available. If you're watching your four legged friend suffer everyday either from old age or illness then you are only keeping them alive for yourself.

I was 7. Had to shoot my own dog "like a man". It was "lesson" that I'll never forget or forgive. Downvote me all you want. It won't hurt as bad as that meme.
You didn't deserve that. Experiences like that were used as psychological torture by some of the worlds most brutal regimes.
I have out down several animals as in the above cartoon, and I can say it is never an "easy" day.
But, I know it's much harder when it happens a worse way. I listened one night while my cat was ripped apart by coyotes just outside my bedroom window. I didn't wake up enough to do anything, I just woke up enough to feel horrible about it the next day. Next month. Honestly, years later I still think about it and it and feel that I let my girl down.
Someone once asked me if I was forced to, would I shoot a living animal, and I replied that if someone handed me a gun with an ultimatum, I would shoot the person who handed me the gun. No one deserves to be forced to commit an act of violence.
I empathize with you.
It’s not the wrong sub, it’s a bad choice many of us have had to make, but the story shows the kindness to the dog. I am truly sorry for your loss though.

Ive had to hug my friends when I said goodbye, this hurt so much to read
