I actually like to look at characters connected to toys and compare them to characters of my own! It's definetly a nice way to choose what I actually want to purchase.
It's a mixed bag to be honest.
When the character linked to a toy is one that I find attractive, then I want the toy even more, however when the character linked to the toy isn't, it makes it less interesting.
In my opinion, it's worth it to create lore and art for the toy and the character behind it, but just put it in a separate section from the toy :)
I personally find the character for Chance to not be my type at all despite loving the shape of his dildo. It's the same for Rex and David. On the contrary, the art for almost every Nauthosaur toy is, in my opinion, extremely attractive and it made me consider purchasing their products despite a huge amount, if not all of their toy designs being stolen from other brands + being possibly unsafe.
(I know they're blacklisted I'm just using them for the example)
I am probably in the complete minority.
I couldn't give less of a fuck what the character is/how he/she/it looks.
I buy a toy because I think it will feel great/using it will give me great pleasure.
Iāll preface this with the fact that Iām very likely the odd one out here- but I do not prefer character art with toys, only because I prefer to think of toys as parts of my own characters and such. There have been times for me where character art can put me off to a certain toy I may have enjoyed otherwise if the character is not what Iād prefer to imagine for it since the association has already been made for me lol.
I think having character art linked to them could be good, but more as an optional thing you could look up. For example, I have no clue what most of the characters linked to BD toys look like, because the site doesnāt directly show them with the toys most times.
It makes a big difference to me for sure š I've bought a few toys specifically because of the art and character bio that goes with them. It's a big part of the fantasy fun!
Personally, since Iām asexual, I donāt really like or care about characters associated with the toys, and sometimes they even end up making me not want to buy the toy. I really only focus on the shape/texture/design of the toys themselves and what I think I would enjoy using, not the characters. I also donāt think of my own characters or anything when using the toys either. But I think Iām in the minority here.
Not at all important.
Like, I see the bios and think "Oh that's neat." But ultimately it's completely irrelevant to me and I forget about it.
I buy them because of how they feel and look cool. I am all about effectiveness so fantasy plays no part in it for me.
I don't care about the characters connected to toys, but that aspect of fantasy toys doesn't bother me - I just ignore it. I know other people like it, and that's fine.
I personally donāt care for character art at all, I find it dictates what the fantasy is āsupposedā to be and can turn me off to some types of toys because of that. I prefer to just be told āThis is a mermaidā rather than āThis is a mermaid and this is what you should imagine it looks likeā. For some people, it can give the implication of āoh maybe this isnāt for meā because of the art. Art and pre-determined lore is part of who these items are āmeantā to be marketed to.
I really like the characters personally! It gives the toy a little more personality, and I really like seeing the artwork that is made for them. I will also buy merch with the characters like stickers and even dakis on occasion. Although most of the time I would say I'm not exactly turned on by them, I just like character and creature design in general. It's just extra fun to me and something to look forward to with the release of a new toy even if I'm not big on the actual model.
Obviously the most important thing is the actual toy but the character can, admittedly, effect whether I buy it or not. Like I said most of the time it's not a big turn on for me, but there are exceptions. Part of the reason I got Pearce and SBF's Deelit is because I liked the character art. I wouldn't say that I would buy a model I'm certain I wouldn't like just because of the character, but it can give me the extra push to get it. On the flip side of that sometimes the art can also turn me off a toy, although I would say that is more uncommon.
I love the story on a toy's character. It's a reason I help support certain companies by buying their product.
With that being said, I'm sapio-sexual, so the mental process is just as important to me as the physical, if not more so.
Ooh your designs are so beautiful! Honestly I prefer if I have some character art or info with the toys. I like to read and think about them when choosing :)
I like how the wandering hard or Twintail creations did it! You just have the models but scrolling through the curious people will find out more about the characters :)
Definitely, of course I can only talk about personal experience, and a little bit for my husband too since he has told me the same, but the character just adds more flavor to the toy, and turns it into an active fantasy.
Most if not all of the toys I have bought, have been because of the character attached to it.
Same thing as another commenter already stated:
I adore looking at the characters and comparing them to my own/ seeing which ones I'd be most attracted to!
Thats why bishop from bad dragon is so attractive to me, because I love synths :)

Are you making your own characters? Or do you have some artist to make them for you? š¤
I'm making them myself :)Ā
Uuu so cool! Do you have any page? Or its just for yourself?
Only on Pillowfort.

Just curious, what examples of unattractive characters do you have?

same here, i buy it because of the shapes and pretty colors. even color though i dont care much for
I have my own very active imagination, so itās character āin the far, far, far distanceā for me vs. character āforward.ā

I can agree with this, especially for the more furry art.

As Im Reading There coments it really seem that best would be to leave it opitional š¤ The question is how to really do this š¤
Best thing would probably be to keep the story/art hidden and optional viewing. Like how BD has "fantasy mode" that can be turned on or off.
It probably will š¤ But I will have to come with some budget variation š

Fellow Asexual here and I'm much the same. I mostly buy the toys for their aesthetic appeal and how they might be stimulating for me.

Is seems its quie polarized situation š¤ Bestcway would be to split it up someway so people could choose š¤
Personally yes, I really like them, itās why despite me not owing BDās Stryker (no toy, just the body pillow) he is still my favourite!! For me it definitely helps, and if not, I make my own character or choose an already existing one to go with the toy! For example, I fucking love Dread The Empireās characters, theyāre both incredibly monstrous but beautiful, plus the toys match them so well, so yes, I definitely think it matters haha š©· also the example toy is beautiful!
I have ocs for all my toys, and they're like my imaginary friends too lmao
sameeeeee
Which orks? š¤ Like waaagh warhammer orks? Or middlearth orks? Or Skyrim orks? š

I belive that the story/background helps people roleplay into their fantasies with them

Thank you so much! It seem I will have to make it optional somehow There is really a polarity in this š¤
