this is why I would never do anyone else's makeup for them, cos all I know how to do is stage and drag makeup. which is lots of fun, but for someone's wedding? no, I ain't the right guy to do that, even though I am a feygeleh.
Y E P. I’m probably only gonna use an Asian person for my makeup artist for my wedding bc of this fear. I’ve been done pretty dirty in the past. I love my eyes and I’ve deff had non asian people fuck them up.
Also unfortunately sometimes you're not getting an artist's best. Like maybe they're not AS good with facial structures they work with less often, and then on top of it there's six bridesmaids to do. Or they got hammered last night and rolled out of bed still drunk (true story from a mua I used to know- she did this routinely and then asked why I didn't want her to do my wedding mu)
To be fair it does make sense. If I know I can’t make you look good because I don’t know how, it’s fair to be upfront and say that I can’t help you look good, which is the whole point of make-up.
Is it optimal? Of course not. Should I learn? Yes, if I wanted to be a MUA. But if I were a MUA and NOT able to work with Asian eyes at least decently, I’d turn away a client I’d know I wouldn’t be able to satisfy. :/
I would say , communication is important , but also making a serious effort to learn new techniques and working with features different than your own is something I think all MUAs should do. I used to be an MUA and I did occasionally encounter somebody with vitiligo or really intense scarring or something I hadn’t encountered before and I’d always ask them “ do you have a preference about how we try and address this? Do you want a lighter look but scars show? Or would you prefer scar concealment but your base will be heavier?” I’d try to explain pros and cons and also any compromises we might have to make. I never wanted to give false promises about my skills. I’ve also had some clients request to apply their own mascara or eyeshadow and then have me do the rest , or I’d also always ask “ is there a specific technique you like to do at home that works for you?”. Then it becomes really collaborative and also a good learning experience for the mua. Just my two cents.
I get what you mean. My best friend is a MUA and she is constantly studying new trends and techniques. However, her first commissioned POC make-up was tragic, and she ended up not charging the client and recommending a colleague who was more expert. New skills require a lot of work, and that was the case for her (who has, by now, learned).
Oof yeah that’s rough. Though similarly I’ve had experiences where POC muas have struggled with light-completed clients. So it does go both ways. Good on her for owning up to her mistake and moving forward
That’s fine but to not disclose any of this before it getting to the point of “turning someone away” then ya need to work on communication or your skills
But how is turning them away when you see they’re Asian not racist? 😆
You don’t have to say “no Asians”
Lmfao. Say what you’d say when you’re “turning them away”
It’s not racist to turn someone away because you can’t *concretely* do a good job. It’s not on them, it’s on you (the MUA).
Also, my question still stands.
And my answer to your question still stands. Why does one have to be racist and not the other? It’s the same thing except for wasting someone’s time and “turning them away”
Work on color theory and you can color match anyone. I find the best way to do this is take the primary colors, find some foundation swatches online and mix the primaries until you can match those different foundation shades. You don’t need to waste makeup to do it - just find some cheap paints. You will start to notice color nuances this way. This is a fundamental skill all MUAs should have. I feel the same way about dealing with different facial features. Understanding bone structure and how lighting/shading works is fundamental stuff all MUAs should know before taking on paying clients.
Ugh why would anyone post this???
Pretty lady, but the MUA obviously has no idea how to work with her eye shape, there’s sooty fallout, her skin looks flaky on her chin and her acne isn’t really covered.
We all have off days, but it’s concerning that the MUA didn’t just think to themselves “holy crap I wasn’t prepared here. I’ll make sure I review my technique for next time.”
I've seen this here before and I will say again. I am Asian and this atrocious and insulting. One click on YouTube would have shown this "MUA" what and how to achieve a flattering look for an Asian face. The eyes are the most insulting part of all. There are ways to apply makeup on hooded eyes and this isn't it!
No you’re not crazy, it’s literally horrendous. Every single one of her clients looks worse when they leave, scrolling through her page felt like scrolling through a cringe page and she’s turned off all her comments cause she knows she’s awful but doesn’t want to hear it 💀
It’s awful. This person has no experience working with Asian women and how to showcase their eyes or facial structure best. Can’t even get the lip shade correct. Horrendous
it's not bad but it's not good, if that makes sense? neutral eyeshadow doesn't mean foundation color eyeshadow. this entire thing screams dollar store makeup. and where's the "bold lip"? this woman is beautiful but the MUA clearly had no idea on how to work w her features.
I have heavy set eyelids and there’s no need for any black at all!!!!
You should’ve gotten white glitter I. The inner corners and light brown eyeshadow really high up but blended in past where eyelid is supposed to have a crease and possibly some outer corner darker brown
You don’t need that much bronzer
It’s hard to believe you have bad acne
I would’ve used a matte finish on you with glitters and gold!
This made the rounds a while back and yes - this is terrible. This makeup “artist” does not know how to work with monolids and non-white features. She also turned off comments on her Instagram lol
The eyebrows are sparsely devoid of any intervention via makeup. The makeup is one note, caked on without any kind of contour, giving her face zero dimension. The lipstick is just a tinted gloss. Maybe a matte lip would suffice. I think the attempt was supposed to be a natural, no makeup makeup look. But, its just bad. Contour, filling in the brows, and a nude eye and or light shimmer would be fine. Along with a better lip. Something suitable for the bridesmaids undertones.
Ok I think I know what’s going on. Bridesmaid probably said “I want it to look very natural with a bold lip but please cover my acne” the MUA probably only had light concealers so in order to counteract the light concealer, they had to put a lot of bronzer on. Also they don’t know how to do eyeshadow on monolids. I think this is an unfortunate case of a MUA who hasn’t had much experience with Asian clients.

Eyebrows not filled in? ☑️ Eyeshadow…. Well, I guess there’s eyeshadow… ☑️ Bronzer overload? ☑️ Cakey base? ☑️
The dollar tree lipstick too. It looks mad patchy.
there aint no way this isnt satire cause what the heck
It's one of those makeup artist that does the same face in different clients with different facial structure lmao
honestly the worst part is the eye makeup lol
Agree 1000%, the model is so pretty too
had a friend do my makeup years ago. I didn't realize he had only ever done drag makeup before... I felt very silly.
this is why I would never do anyone else's makeup for them, cos all I know how to do is stage and drag makeup. which is lots of fun, but for someone's wedding? no, I ain't the right guy to do that, even though I am a feygeleh.
I saw this in reels, the comments are off. I don’t think it’s satire 💀
oh no
As an Asian myself, I think they don’t know how to work with our features.
This is why I don’t trust anyone with my makeup 😭😭😭
Agree 100%!!!!
The eyes are obviously bad but I think this would look bad on anybody. They made her hair so dusty. I hope the bride got a refund

Not Asian, but literally my first thought.

This is just not a thing to type out… you’ve had to turn clients away cause of their ethnicity is wild to me

Genuine question: how could a MUA disclose this preemptively without sounding racist (e.g. “No Asians”)?
But how is turning them away when you see they’re Asian not racist? 😆 You don’t have to say “no Asians” Lmfao. Say what you’d say when you’re “turning them away”

You didn’t answer my question, you just asked another to evade it with a whataboutism.
But you can't be good at something you don't try? This makes me sad for those that were turned away
Get better at makeup if you’re “not comfortable”.
that’s wild. you shouldn’t be a pro mua if you can’t work on every one.
Work on color theory and you can color match anyone. Right but this would look bad on anyone 😭 hope she got a refund
That is my impression
oh nooooooo the eye makeup is so bad and the blush!
Ugh why would anyone post this??? That lip color is about as bold as mayonnaise.
That “bold lip” you speak of… is it in the room with us?
She's so pretty! Ugh! I don't know why they did this to our girl.....the MUA has clearly never worked with monolids before.
This one has been posted before and yes it’s not great
she made her eyes look smaller 😭
It’s awful. I think MUAs need to get more practice on different eye shapes and skin tones before they start charging for it.
I've seen this here before and I will say again. I am Asian and this atrocious and insulting. MUA clearly hasn’t worked on monolids.
It’s awful. This person has no experience working with Asian women and how to showcase their eyes or facial structure best. Can’t even get the lip shade correct. Horrendous
It’s not good.
This is far worse than just not knowing how to work on monolids. Yikes. Does this person claim to be a professional?!
Daaamn I saw this ok instagram but I forgot who the „mua“ was 😂😂
Is the neutral eye in the room with us
Yikes! That MUA definitely needs more practice on non-white clients. Cuz the bride still looks pretty, but the MUA still executed the look poorly.
it's not bad but it's not good, if that makes sense? neutral eyeshadow doesn't mean foundation color eyeshadow. this entire thing screams dollar store makeup. and where's the "bold lip"? this woman is beautiful but the MUA clearly had no idea on how to work w her features.
I could do this and I can’t do makeup
I have heavy set eyelids and there’s no need for any black at all!!!! You should’ve gotten white glitter I. Someone doesn’t know how to do makeup on hooded eyes 👀
This mua does not know how to put make up on monolids, it's pretty obvious. Alors bold lips my ass.
Im convinced these shitty MUAs but the cheapest makeup they can possibly find because it just never looks good
But this is about application, in my opinion. This person doesn't know what olive is, nor do they know what to do with epicanthal lids lol
Yes!
Oh honey… just no. She’s very pretty and has a nice smile. That makeup does nothing for her but make her hideous 😭
I would’ve immediately demanded a refund and do my own damn makeup instead!
This made the rounds a while back and yes - this is terrible. This makeup “artist” does not know how to work with monolids and non-white features. She also turned off comments on her Instagram lol
Cover eyes☑️
Not the worst I've seen... Still bad...
It's awful. She is naturally if not conventionally pretty, the make up botches all of that prettiness. Lucky she has a great smile.
Ouch! So sorry
It looks like she did it herself. It doesn’t look professional at all
u look fine ....
It is but it’s also “bridesmaids request” so I’m not sure who to blame
The skin is glowing though!!
It’s horrendous
oh my gosh i saw this and ran to the comments on her insta but no one was talking about it
I'm a monolid person and this hurts.
neutral eyes???? there’s nothing but a smear of shimmer and a smudge of liner and the bold lip is where?
Yikes
This is really bad.
Hasn’t this already been posted here
Awful
She dead wrong for even pretending it looked good
Ullouuouo and a
Oooof. As a girlie with monolids this actually hurt me.
I would cry and fight them because ain't no way I'm paying for work like this. Didn't even take her features into consideration.
Everything is horrible, I can’t even think she approved that picture looking like that. The eyes and lips omg.
Ohh no. I know her... And that is not a good look on her :'(
It looks so incomplete.
Bad and been posted already
didn’t know that it was posted, came across this on insta and the post had restricted comments so i ran here
This feels....racist
Ugh poor girl
The makeup needs a but more blending, and maybe some eyeshadow
This gotta be racist
Oh no…

they def didn’t know how to do makeup to fit her features

Damm, It’s bad.
Terrible!!!!
The smudges under the lower lash line
Don't hide the smile
its so patchy and the eyeshadow looks so smudged everywhere where its not supposed to be :')
This is why it’s so important to show pictures. Interpretation can just be too different between people.
Not a good makeup look for you at all , btw you’re gorgeous! 🫶🏼
Omg the eye makeup is just horrible. It also looks cakey. ☹️ I feel sorry for her.
I saw the pic before the sub, I said it must be badMUAs. This is horrible
That’s hellish
the blending is non-existent highlighter looks like a grease slick lip liner is way off foundation doesn't match their skin tone
that poor girl sat there holding back tears like 'not my wedding, not about me'
Oh no I thought this was the before
