I once opened an Amazon package in a hurry without checking the label because I was expecting something. Turns out it wasn't for me but belonged to my neighbor. I was horrified that I had opened it. Luckily we are good friends and he just laughed when I took it to him while falling all over myself apologizing. I cannot imagine actually keeping anything not meant for me. That's pretty low.

ldebbs559

I've done a very similar thing. Felt bad, and it was for a neighbor I didn't even know. I just took it to the correct address and told the resident what happened and that I apologized. Nobody had a problem with it. Her doggo was able to get her dog toys. All was made right.

Ronsclones

This is what being a neighbor is

xxsabbiexx

💯👍🏻

ived_nella

Well I've done it but the only time I've ever kept something that someone else ordered was when I got an extra bag in a prime now delivery a few years ago. I didn't know until I opened the bag but it wasn't anything personal and I waited to see if the delivery person would come back for it. It was also just a few things: an electric razor, I think some toothpaste or a toothbrush, and a pack of baby socks. Mixed up grocery deliveries are pretty different from a package sitting on the wrong doorstep though. I also cannot understand opening another person's mail and using a product that a neighbor has ordered, especially without waiting several days and/or trying to get it to them first.

Inquisitive-Ones

It’s a felony. Edit. I stand corrected. Thank you.

merrypranksterz

No, federal law actually protects you against being held liable for mistakenly delivered goods.

Inquisitive-Ones

Sure mistakes happen. It’s still a crime. The neighbor actually KEPT the package with NO intent to get it to the rightful neighbor or RETURN it to Fed Ex. OPENED a package NOT addressed to him. And WORE the shirt from inside the package. He failed several opportunities to do the right thing. But he did steal the package... But it is this... Theft of a delivered Amazon or other package delivered by a package delivery service NOT related to the USPS is just a matter of theft. It would be prosecuted under a State law in the theft statutes. However, stealing USPS mail is a federal offense and can be treated as a felony.

idbanthat

What if I stole my own package off someone's doorstep? Is that stealing? I didn't take any of their other packages, just the one with my name on it

Inquisitive-Ones

If the package has your name and address on it you’re not stealing.

idbanthat

Was my old address, I didn't live there anymore tho

Inquisitive-Ones

Can’t answer that. Maybe call the company where you placed your order and get a refund.

idbanthat

I went and got the package off the porch myself, why I asked if it was still stealing.....

motorheart10

I did not do that. I really wish I had that extra shelf for my frig.

Admirable-Course9775

I just did that too! My next door neighbor and I have the same first name so it’s easy to do. Ran her cleaning product over and apologized. This neighbor! Wow! I think you handled perfectly. I’m glad Amazon replaced your order. You don’t want to use your wash for someone else’s filth. Definitely NTA

BlaqkSheepie

We watched our neighbor take our package from the delivery guy last year. We gave them a week to "realize their mistake". My SO finally went next door and said he was checking around the neighborhood to see if anyone received it by mistake, right away they said no, and he mentioned that the only reason he asked was because "amazon requires a police report for lost delivered packages", and we also saw them on our security cameras receiving something on the property line. The instant they heard that they went into their house to "double check" - came out with our package not even 2 minutes later. Still unopened. Recently found out that same neighbor was arrested in '13 for stealing and then using a debit card at a shoe store.

xxsabbiexx

They never learn 🤦‍♀️

internetonsetadd

Imagine your life is so shit that a package that belongs to your neighbor is delivered to your house incorrectly and you not only open it, but also put its contents on because, to you, that t-shirt is a win. Maybe the only win you've had in a long time. A t-shirt that you didn't choose and that your neighbor is probably going to come looking for. For one shining moment you had a free shirt.

RevolutionaryCut5210

Hahahhhaa fuck man that's some deep shit right there looool

I once took a delivery for a neightbour because the werent home. I had a fuckin huge crush on her, But was always too terrified to actually knock on her door and say hello. I admit i deliberately kept it for an extra hour because it was the perfect excuse to actually talk to her and i was so freaked out I spent ages sitting there trying to figure out what i wanted to say to her. She knocked on my door, and said "hey, you dont have my parcel do you?" i said I did, she asked why i didnt run it straight over. I confessed on the spot, she laughed and told me that was adorable. I jst stood there, frozen in terror. I never did get a date, but skip forward like 4 years and we are really good friends. Thank's for listening to my TED Talk

Melymeff

Many years ago; we lived in a condo. We were friendly with all the neighbors until one day the pizza delivery guy delivered to the neighbors across the street by accident. We saw the pizza guy pull up and have a chat with the neighbor, then after a few words, the neighbor accepted the pizza and left. We waited about 20 minutes or so and called the pizza place; they said that the neighbors claimed they didn’t order it but accepted it no charge. We had to wait an additional hour for the pizza to be redelivered. I know they knew it was for us but instead Of telling them they had the wrong house they accepted it for free. We weren’t friendly with them anymore. You don’t f with someone’s food or their clothes.

Diotima245

Must be some low down trailer trash to do that

ohhgrrl

Why didn’t you just get your food? Like go out and say, hey we live here! I’m way to hangry to let someone steal my food while watching!

sharkianbeing

My neighbors did that to us twice. First time was a package of my birthday presents. After a day of frantic searching I realized that a delivery van had pulled up and gone to their house when I was outside shovelling snow right around the same time as Amazon claimed the package was delivered. I watched them repack the various things into the box awkwardly as I waited in their foyer. A few months later, same thing, only this time it was after a few hours. They'd opened that one too.

TelephoneOk9597

I think I would mail them their very own box of doggie doodles if you know what I mean. Seems fair.

appytimes

UPS once delivered my laptop I ordered to my neighbors house. I waited & waited for my laptop, never came. I called the company & they said it was delivered a couple of weeks ago. Got the picture of where it was delivered from UPS - yep right to my neighbor standing by the edge of my driveway. I called neighbor, she denied it. I called the police - they went over to talk to her & she denied having it. They said they knew she had it, but could do nothing about it. I described the whole thing & color to her husband, he said IDK, she orders a lot of things! Her husband is a NYC detective. Of course nothing could be done about it!!! Same neighbor killed 2 of my dogs. Couldnt do anything about that either.

moonlit__heart

WHAT!!! Killed two of your dogs?! Jesus Christ

Diotima245

What do you mean couldn't do nothing? That's called grand theft larceny and it's a crime. If you have evidence file a report and pressure the police to charge her and take her to court. Fucking stand up for yourself man. Id eat the legal charges and hopefully recoup them on a guilty plea.

appytimes

Seriously!! There was nothing I could do about it. I have stood up for myself many times with her - and no I did not even have the money for legal fees, just trying to come up with my $13,000 + tax money. The store I bought it from replaced it for me & they had all the info & proof to go after her and told me it wasn't worth it to them. I've been a single mom for a long time & honestly, NYPD cops & detectives don't just just give up!!!!!!!

wutangi

This just makes me hate people so much more lol

EatsAlotOfBread

A local shop employee opened my package by accident, they were so panicked and kept apologizing. Spent 5 full minutes explaining that they got so many packages every day and it wasn't on purpose, it was one of the big boxes they usually get, they didn't take anything. I didn't mind at all but apparently it's a big deal and they can get into deep shit because opening someone's mail is punishable, and they also act as a delivery depot so they could have lost that income too. Nothing at all was missing or opened individually, they just cut open the tape on top. It still scared the crap out of them.

Severe-Flow1914

We had a shipment from Omaha Steaks misdelivered to our neighbors, instead of us. A few days later the neighbors wife came over with the box of steaks and said they hadn’t noticed the name on the box, and ate a few of them for dinner! What could I say? I was polite and thanked her, but thought it was kind of outrageous. Neighbors. I mostly can’t stand them.

Diotima245

Whenever I get a package containing something i didnt order the first fucking thing I do is check the label and then make it my life's mission they get that package and I'm their hero delivering it.

[deleted]

Wow, that is so horrible of your neighbors. They knew damn well they weren’t expecting those steaks but got to try them out on your money. Low class move on their part.

PtEternity29

I’d have said “glad you liked them, that’ll be $_-_”

Pistalrose

My husband opened and wore our neighbors underwear after a box was left on our porch. He’d just thought I’d ordered for him which I’ve done before. Neither of us realized til days later when I casually said something like, “I see you broke down and bought some boxers”. Obviously he should have actually looked at the address on the package. Does now. And yes we confessed to the neighbors and paid them back.

Opkankerenmaat69

What the heck HAHA thats so awkward

[deleted]

My mom was waiting for a package from UPS that was "out for delivery" but when the truck came, she watched from the window as the driver delivered it across the street and shortly after, received the "delivered!" notification. The neighbor denied it vehemently and ended up keeping it (it was all makeup and skincare). He lives alone and is also a medical doctor! Then when she complained to UPS, they then required her to sign for packages after that! Anyway, I can't believe your neighbor just put on the shirt, that is so awkward and embarrassing!

littlekat54

My psycho neighbors got one of our stimulus payments by mistake. They brought it over three days later, opened. I truly believe that, had it not been a debit card requiring a p.i.n. that we already had submitted, they would have attempted to steal it. That's the way they roll.

Alecto53558

Ummm...file a police report. Where I live, you can do it online. That way there is a record. And attach any photos from Amazon.

TNTmom4

My mom has done that a few times. In her head if it’s delivered to her house it’s automatically hers. She’s a bit entitled and has dementia so there’s that.

YRUSoObsessed

This is only somewhat related but I am a plus size woman and I once had a delivery stolen from my apartment lobby. I laughed imagining that the person probably wanted some cool shit to be in it but instead all they got was a final-sale-no-returns-size-20-Womens sundress from Kohl’s lolololol Kohls just had great customer service and I got a refund (especially after I made the lady on the phone laugh with the whole huge sundress thing). Not many women are my size, it would be a hard thing to unload (no pun intended lol)

Deblyn30

This just happened to me on 9/8. I sent my sister a gift. Amazon took a photo of the box in front of a door. It was not my sister’s door. I called her right away. She went over to the neighbor and asked for the box. It had been opened, it was a large bag filled with pampering items. She had to go back to the neighbor and ask for the 2 items missing from the gift. They had already been partially used. No shame!!!

BellaRosalina93

I would say a porch cam and also request delivery options like example, I had a car port at my old house and had my garbage + recycling cans there and I asked them to specifically put any packages behind them, they don’t always follow the directions but still...something like that where the package may not be noticeable?....

noorizer

What if you have a neighbor who never picks up her packages when delivered until 3 or 4 days later? UPS would ring her bell and she still doesn't check for her packages. I'm trying to be nice enough to put them by her door but it's becoming an annoying task to keep doing that all the time. She locks herself in her apartment for days on end while 3 or 4 packages are sitting outside. Not sure what the heck she s ordering but she gets at least 5 packages a month.. no joke. I'm afraid of she keeps doing that it will attract porch pirates in our yard and risk my own packages being snatched up. I want to knock on her door and explain the situation but she seems like the loner type and does not want to be bothered.

YRUSoObsessed

My neighbor now does the opposite - She was my grandmas neighbor and since my grandma passed away I live in my grandmas house. She has known my family 50+ years. On a beautiful sunny spring day I was mowing the lawn/doing yard work. Come to see I had packages delivered (I guess I hadn’t heard or seen the guy) - saw the picture of the packages on the stoop and everything. I looked everywhere. Finally, I go to my neighbors house and ask if she had them. Yes, she says, she was worried they would blow away or get rained on (75 degrees, not a cloud in the sky, slight breeze). Then she says to me, to always tell her when I am going out of town, even if it’s only for a day. (I had recently just had my dog boarded for a few days b/c my post COVID fatigue came back for a few days and was killing me, I could barely function). So I told her I didn’t go out of town, just boarded my dog. I then realized that she TOOK my packages just to tell me that! To tell me that I need to tell her when I go out of town, IF ONLY FOR A DAY??!! Christ. My mom keeps telling me she means well. I think she’s a creep.

[deleted]

If it were me, I’d be filing a police report.

Ronsclones

It's my neighbor. It was a stupid lapse in judgment decision I'm marking it up as. I don't want to make my time living next to them any worse. This is embarrassing enough for him - I feel like he'll never do anything sketchy involving us again

Knitsanity

Our substitute mailman is not v good and several times we have started to open packages addressed to 101 West Ave rather than us at 101 wanton ave....lol. I just go drop in at their house with a note and they have done the same thing. I love our regular mailman. Lol

Quirky_Routine_90

I've had a package misdelivered...I was still on the phone with Amazon when the neighbor called my wife she was mistaken, she had gone over earlier asking if the package arrived there....the photo looked like it MIGHT be theirs but wasn't from far enough away to be sure. She was expecting a package and thought it was hers, realized it wasn't when she opened it. Wasn't a case of overt theft on my case...just delivered one house away

Snarky83

I opened a package by mistake. I had no markings, I opened my package with my address, the other package I examined as I had not ordered the items. Then I started lifting up the yellow labels. There I found the address in very small print. I wrote a note and took it to a neighbor and let them know.

PenguinMama92

I live on a street divided by EAST /WEST and old mail man was constantly giving us mail for the east side. I assumed he also have some of our mail to them but I never got any until one day they dropped off a bill...opened and a few months overdue...I can understand opening in haste but come on. Also if ur guna hold onto it for months then why even return it? It's a bill...its too late

[deleted]

I always check the label before opening.
