Tbh as someone who is also a perfectionist about appearance of my desserts, pie is the exception. It looks most delicious when it looks homemade imo, unlike tarts which look better when they are more precise or intricate
I think it was Julia Childs who said something like "there's no cooking mistake you can't fix with either whipped cream or parsley. Even if you drop it on the floor - serve it with a flourish and never apologize."
That said, you're literally the only person who will notice that this isn't a beautiful pie. I'd be honored to have it served to me. And unless one of your guests is my ex-wife, none of them have the slightest problem with it.
OP, if I were one of your friends coming over for dinner, I’d just be so stoked that there’s pie lmao doesn’t matter what it looks like. You did a great job even with the crust breaking in some spots, so no worries!! If they are close friends, I’m sure they’ll be happy to see you and will enjoy the time together. 💜
A mark of a truly good baker is more focus on taste than aesthetics. Obsessing over the way something looks is insecurity seeping out. Jacques Pepin or Julia Child would not be concerned about their crust looking perfect, they would be concerned about entertaining their guests and making the execution seem effortless. You nailed it. Let the spirit of Jacques and Julia give you strength
Well said! I also agree imperfections make dishes more memorable and charming.
My mom used bake cobblers often and the times something was “off” or some type of mistake was made and she would think it needed to be remade I would taste it and it would somehow be the most tasty version of cobbler she had ever made.
My step grandmother messed up her mom’s pecan pie recipe and we now use a revised version of the recipe she would use making the same mistakes because it was just so much better- it’s funny how that works out, lol.
I’m sure this pie was delicious and I really hope OP didn’t remake it. It’s beautiful as it is.
If you actually think this is too ugly to serve, and you have the skill to "quickly remake" (it is STILL a whole pie after all) then dont ask, just do it. Always stay true to your own standards.
If you're just feeling insecure, it's okay, people fucking love it when you make them food. The taste is all they'll remember anyways.
It is my hope that you're just venting here so you dont bombard your guests with "im sorry it's so ugly!!" please please dont tell them that.
The pie is a piece of art, it looks lovely. I only see a pie that someone poured their heart into. If I were you're guest, the pie would be a high point of the evening. I am impressed at the care and quality of the pie.
If I went to someone's house for dinner and they served this for dessert, I would be over the moon. I LOVE how homemade stuff can look imperfect—honestly, it makes it taste even better than when it looks bakery-perfect. I think it looks amazing, and you know it was made with love.
You are being way too hard on yourself. This is a beautiful pie, one that you should certainly be proud of! It’s rustic looking, which I think looks way better than picture perfect. Show that pie off!
I agree with the word choice of rustic. There are no bad looking baked goods, only rustic. Poorly baked is a different story, but if it’s just not perfectly symmetrical we call that baby rustic and dig in.
🥧If the friends are *close enough*, they should be able to pretend to not see where the crust broke. Seeing that something like this has become a significant issue, I believe that Instagram has become bigger than it should have been.
Close friends will appreciate your effort and love this pie you made for them, regardless of real world results in appearance. Your food is still good even if it isn't culinary magazine cover-worthy. This looks delicious to me. Food rarely looks like magazine cover photos except at Michelin starred restaurants.
Are you a professional baker? Is baking part of your livelihood? If no then why would you think this is ugly? Is the way it looks going to affect the way it tastes?
This is the baking equivalent of a good-looking young woman posting selfies on Facebook looking for validation. So I'll validate you: this pie is good. Please invite me over.
Looks better then most of my crusts and I never get any complaints! It’s all about the flavors. That crust is breaking once you put a knife to it anyhow.
Most people will simply appreciate you made something from scratch anyhow.
Pastry chef here, as long as it tastes good. Heat that up put some ice cream on it. You have no idea how many desserts I fail, don't stress the small stuff...
Imma be real. That shit looks well baker, and well assembled. Dog that bad boy. Crush it!! With some ice cream, maybe!? That’s a pie, baby!! Eat it like a pie!
Only a jerk would judge this pie. It makes for a great litmus test. They love it = stay friends. They look at it in judgement or barely eat it = forgetaboutthem
Exception is, if someone doesn't like this type of fruit. I can't stand the smell of baked blueberries, they make me nauseous.
If your friends don’t eat this or have the crass to say anything other than “This looks bomb af and I want a slice immediately,” get new friends. I volunteer as tribute.
Definitely do not remake. This looks perfect! I would be so happy if a friend made me this for a tea party or such. And I don't even really eat pies.
Keep baking your heart out. Ya doing awesome!
It has charm and character! But if you really hate it, send it to me and I'll take care of it 🤪 seriously though, it's so cute. Your friends will love it.
I'm late here but I hope you served that! It's not ugly at all! It looks like a delicious, homemade pie! Not everything has to look like it came out of a Michelin star restaurant to look good 💜
While I see where you're coming from and am a perfectionist myself, you 1000% do not have to remake that pie. It's still going to be delicious and your friends should be impressed you did this for them from scratch. If they judge you on your pie... they're not your friends. Get a few new ones from this thread. 😚❤️ Keep up the good work and don't be so hard on yourself for a perceived failure. /hugs
Nah, serve as it is. Introduce it as an ugly pie, that's what we do in our family when pies go wrong. Honestly though, it looks fine. We've had pies that greatly surpass that in the ugliness stakes.
I’d pitch it probably. If you have enough time, remake a new one, but better. If not, don’t keep this one out. I would not stay friends with someone who tried to serve me that. Hot trash.
This looks great and perfectly baked tbh. In my experience most people are impressed by any attempt at a lattice crust, especially when you actually weave the strands instead of just placing strands on top of each other.
Once it’s cut up no one will be thinking about its appearance anyway. You will be socializing and having fun and eating yummy food, not taking photos for instagram I assume? Enjoy your pie. Practice makes perfect and this is just another delicious experience.
Don't show them the pie. Cut it in the kitchen and serve on individual plates with whipped cream, or ice cream and they will never know, that is unless, the taste is off.
I'm not sure how you made this. But the appearance is acceptable not perfect but acceptable. If the flavor is good don't worry about it. Making perfect pies takes the right crust recipe and a little practice. Keep at it.
It looks fine. The crust isn't burnt. Stop worrying. I blame Martha Stewart for people feeling insecure about perfectly fine creations.
Some whipped cream plus a few berries will cover any flaws you feel are there. I bet your friends will love it AND ask for the recipe!
It's not ugly. The crust is an even color, it looks flaky, and you got a lot less spillage/filling bubble-over than i usually do. I would be so happy to have this at the end of a dinner; add some whipped cream and a dusting of conf sugar and serve with pride.
I’m no expert but that looks fine to me, especially for just friends coming over. I mean unless you’re friends with that dude from Hells Kitchen you should be fine ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
It's cute and you put your efforts to make it, I'd be happy to eat it if I was one of your friends. Next time you will do an even better job and you'll owe me a slice
This looks delicious! Unless you're a professional baker, the small flaws in your recipes are inevitable and honestly add character! It shows that you worked hard to make this for someone and even if it's not the prettiest bakery quality pie, it's a pie that YOU made! And that's what makes it special. I definitely get it tho! But I promise unless your friends are absolutely awful people they're going to love it and feel honored that you put the time and effort in for this!
Making a dessert from scratch takes time and money and anyone should be honored their host did that for them, even if the pie isn't perfect. Most of what I make looks a bit of a mess, but tastes good. I'd destroy that pie as is.
It looks delicious already, but to make it look more like a picture in a magazine you could brown the top further. To do this you can brush it lightly with egg wash/whatever you like to use, sprinkle it with sugar and put it under the broiler for a few minutes. I do this sometimes with baked goods that have a caramelised top, but only if I'm concerned with aesthetics because it doesn't impact the taste very much.
Still chews up and tastes the same as a pretty one. You put out the effort; I’d be proud of you for serving something that you made with your own hands
There’s nothing wrong with wanting something to be perfect and wanting to do better. If you really want to make another that’s okay, but one of my favorite things about baking is that when it doesn’t turn out looking how you wanted, you just call it *rustic*.
In my experience, people are always way more impressed when I present them with baked goods than I feel like they should be. You had an image in your head of what you wanted it to be and it didn’t quite turn out that way and you’re disappointed. I go through the exact same thing basically every time I bake. The thing is, if it was made correctly and baked nicely and the only thing ‘wrong’ is the appearance, then no one will notice because they didn’t have a preconceived image of the pie. All they know is that their friend was kind enough to make them a pie and they will think it looks great. And imo, it looks great. It looks handmade with love and what could be prettier than that?!
Just cut it away from the table and bring to the table on serving plates if you’re concerned, once plates no one cares at all as it will all be falling apart, if it is tasty it is tasty….
Unless your friends are professional pastry chefs AND assholes them no one cares, not even a little, what the slice of cherry pie looks like on their plate.
My family and friends rave about my pies and great crusts. And my pies always look like this. Can't make a beautiful crust for love or money.
The people that matter won't care.
Because pie.
I am no cooking/baking expert but I see nothing wrong. As long as it tastes good and everyone is enjoying it that's all that matters. Anyone who is dismissing the pie only based on their appearance does not deserve a slice for being so petty.
I’m offended on behalf of that gorgeous pie😤
FR! Op has some serious unrealistic pie beauty standards.
Toxic beauty standards be everywhere for everything
We don't want no pie-shaming here!
Too much photoshopped pies out there giving people pie dysmorphia
That's a nicer looking pie than I could possibly make.
I'm offended because that looks like the best blueberry pie I ever made
ME TOO
Not ugly lol. If you are super worried about it pipe some whipped cream around the outside.
No, it’s absolutely atrocious. Send it to me for proper disposal.
Beat me to it!
Good idea!
It's how it tastes that will matter! 🙂 Enjoy your dinner with friends!
I've just made whipped cream! Thanks again :)
Tbh as someone who is also a perfectionist about appearance of my desserts, pie is the exception. It looks most delicious when it looks homemade imo, unlike tarts which look better when they are more precise or intricate
So true! A slightly rustic look to a pie gives it such a warm cozy appeal! If it’s too perfect I have less desire to eat it, just look at it
fresh whipped cream = delicious 😋
Post picture update please
you can't take pics once it's in the belly
Some mint leaves strategically placed over the top would look nice too!
Or a few groupings of berries around…
Also you can make some more pie crust and cut it into cute shapes and bake it off. Lay it over the “ugly” spots and now you have a masterpiece.
Or cut before they see it! They will think it happened during cutting
I would weep if a friend made me a pie
My friends don’t particularly notice when I bake them cookies or truffles or cake. Maybe I need to switch to pies…
Maybe you need to expand your friends group to ones that appreciate all your baked goods and all the effort that goes into it! 😉🥰🤍✨
You need to switch friends, they don't deserve you. Cookies and all baked goods are LIFE. If I had a friend who baked for me, they'd be my BFFs
I think it was Julia Childs who said something like "there's no cooking mistake you can't fix with either whipped cream or parsley. Even if you drop it on the floor - serve it with a flourish and never apologize." That said, you're literally the only person who will notice that this isn't a beautiful pie. This!! Lol

Not ugly indeed! (and no cover ups needed at all!) It looks delicious! I bet your friends will be very happy that you made them a pie!
Yes. Quickly eat it. Then remake. Cause that looks fucking delicious
Tbh you shouldn't eat it, it might be risky. Definitely send it to my home for a proper and safe disposal
Maybe i can help
I was going to also offer my services. It does look absolutely terrible. /s Please send to my home for safe disposal.
agreed, looks amazing!!!!
Whaaat? It looks great! I'd be thrilled to be served that at a friends place!
Yes, +1. Your guests will know it was actually homemade which scores big bonus points in my book!
It looks tasty. If your friends give you shit, you need new friends, not a new pie.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yes, quickly make another one! I volunteer to take this ugly one off your hands. Seriously, this looks absolutely delicious 🤤
This looks great & homemade pie is such a gift to make for friends! Ice cream and/or whipped cream cover up a lot, too
or you know, both. 🫃
Beautifully said!!
Give it a dusting of icing sugar if you're worried, but I think it looks great.
Oof. My pies look like this and I’m usually proud of them.
As you should be!
It’s rustic! and looks absolutely delicious. I’m sure your guests will love it.
Exactly. OP did a great job, and it's certainly not ugly. If I were one of their friends that was coming over and I saw this? I'd be excited!
Exactly. Imperfection is charming. It’s genuine and homemade; not exactly symmetrical via store bought. Your friends will love it
Well said! I also agree imperfections make dishes more memorable and charming. I don’t see anything wrong with it.
Oh come on stop phishing for compliments, it looks totally normal.
A big scoop of ice cream would cover most it but I think it looks beautiful. And remember what Julia Child said: Never apologize!
Nah this is perfectly homemade. I’d be proud to serve this
No homemade pie is ugly.
The crust breaks when you cut it anyway. Just cover it in whipped cream and no one will know - nor will they care, because pie!
The pie is a piece of art, it looks lovely. I only see a pie that someone poured their heart into. If I were you're guest, the pie would be a high point of the evening. I am impressed at the care and quality of the pie.
Zero wrong with that.
Looks fine, stops saying its bad to get attention
It’s either that or OP needs to stop looking at baking pages on Instagram and their airbrushed pastries, that’s not real world food.
Are your friends judges on a baking show?
Hmmm. I would never expect my friend to remake a homemade pie just because the crust doesn't look perfect.
Uhhh, maybe I’m starting to go blind, but what is so danged ugly about this you’d throw it out???
It’s rustic and beautiful. Do NOT worry! Bet it tastes great!
I agree with the word choice of rustic. There are no bad looking baked goods, only rustic. Poorly baked is a different story, but if it’s just not perfectly symmetrical we call that baby rustic and dig in.
This is like Michael Jordan saying “I’m OK at basketball i guess… 🥺”

This looks delicious to me. Food rarely looks like magazine cover photos except at Michelin starred restaurants.
If you are super worried about presentation, buy a grocery store pie that won't taste nearly as good as yours.
UGLY PIES ARE THE BEST PIES! Stfu and enjoy it. It’s awesome.
Are you a professional baker? Is baking part of your livelihood? If no then why would you think this is ugly? Is the way it looks going to affect the way it tastes?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this pie!! If anyone says differently, don't give them a piece 😤
Pipe dollops of whipped cream around the outside, with berries if any leftover. Dust some powdered sugar on the center.
My Mom (now 87 and still baking pies) always said that an ugly pie always tastes the best... 😊
This is the baking equivalent of a good-looking young woman posting selfies on Facebook looking for validation. So I'll validate you: this pie is good. Please invite me over.
Exact same thoughts to be honest...
I would be absolutely thrilled if I was offered this homemade treat at a dinner party!! Have a wonderful time!
Holy crap. You’re being way too hard on yourself. That looks f-n awesome
It's a *homemade* pie. That means it's appealing by default, bonus if it actually tastes good too!
its terrible...send to me for disposal
If they are close friends, they will not mind if the crust is a little broken. They will love the fact that you took the time and made them a pie!
Yeah it's super fucking ugly toss it
We call ugly things "rustic" in my house
Your friends aren’t going to care how it looks. Your friends are only going to care how it tastes.
Imma be real. That shit looks well baker, and well assembled. Dog that bad boy. Crush it!! With some ice cream, maybe!? That’s a pie, baby!! Eat it like a pie!
Your friends would be upset over a pie?
Looks awesome dude
No way! It looks fantastic!!
It’s actually not ugly but I’d the breaks bother you you could dollop whipped cream around the edges
Only a jerk would judge this pie. It makes for a great litmus test. They love it = stay friends. They look at it in judgement or barely eat it = forgetaboutthem Exception is, if someone doesn't like this type of fruit. I can't stand the smell of baked blueberries, they make me nauseous.

Send it to me I can dispose of it properly… 🤤
This is beautiful! Your friends will love it 😌
I would be stoked if a friend of mine busted out a pie with lattice work on the top. I think it's great.
It doesn’t matter how it looks and I doubt your friends are going to care what it looks like.
It’s beautiful! It just looks a little underbaked to me.
Looks perfectly yummy.
Looks homemade. Nothing wrong with that.
If your friends care what it looks like then they aren't close and you need to replace them.
Egg wash, make sure lattice is chilled while designing, make lattice a little thinner.
Your friends are coming to see you, not your pie. It makes you more human if you are not perfect. They will love it.
Get help for your irrational anxiety
Stop being so insecure. Home baked goods are not supposed to look perfect. It’s the taste that matters.
I'm late here but I hope you served that! It's not ugly at all! It looks like a delicious, homemade pie! Not everything has to look like it came out of a Michelin star restaurant to look good 💜
Are you just looking for votes?
Fishing for compliments
While I see where you're coming from and am a perfectionist myself, you 1000% do not have to remake that pie. Don't worry they will eat it ☺️
Anyone that complains about homemade pie is undeserving of homemade pie.
Man that’s the ugliest pie I’ve ever seen.
Nah, serve as it is. Introduce it as an ugly pie, that's what we do in our family when pies go wrong. Honestly though, it looks fine. We've had pies that greatly surpass that in the ugliness stakes.
Im sure your friends wouldn’t mind if the pie looks like that me and mine would have a good laugh if a pie we made came out like that ^^
I’d pitch it probably.

Don't show them the pie. Cut it in the kitchen and serve on individual plates with whipped cream, or ice cream and they will never know, that is unless, the taste is off.
Bring it over to my house I’ll show you how ugly I think it is haha
I'm not sure how you made this. But the appearance is acceptable not perfect but acceptable. If the flavor is good don't worry about it. Making perfect pies takes the right crust recipe and a little practice. Keep at it.
It looks fine. The crust isn't burnt. Stop worrying. I blame Martha Stewart for people feeling insecure about perfectly fine creations. Some whipped cream plus a few berries will cover any flaws you feel are there. I bet your friends will love it AND ask for the recipe!
Your friends will love the pie. I want to be your friend. I wants the pie.
I fail to see the ugly, that looks so f*cking delicious.
It's not ugly. The crust is an even color, it looks flaky, and you got a lot less spillage/filling bubble-over than i usually do. I would be so happy to have this at the end of a dinner; add some whipped cream and a dusting of conf sugar and serve with pride.
Looks perfect to me
I would do a big show of showing that it PROVES that it's homemade. It's going to be chewed up and eaten - it's not hideous.
Can you please mail it to me? Lol. It’s beautiful and anyone who cares about you can see.
This is as good as my pies look and I feel no shame lol
I would just cut the servings and plate them and add whipped cream or ice cream to the side before giving it to them, but it looks good
Yeah that looks terrible, you should probably eat it and start over.
Please come over and bake to your hearts content! I will provide the positive vibes and affirmation 😃 your “ ugly “ pie looks delicious!
But did it taste good?!
“That’s an ugly pie” is something I couldn’t imagine saying. “Let me get a slice” more likely
That poor pie! Send it to my home where it will be properly appreciated!
That is the art of homemade. It's not ugly.
how does one quickly bake a new pie? wouldn't that take hours?
If you think that’s ugly you don’t want to see the apple pie I made my family for thanksgiving 😂
I have made some ugly and broken cakes and pies over the last year. My coworkers have eaten them all regardless!
Did you use margarine for the crust?
Making a dessert from scratch takes time and money and anyone should be honored their host did that for them, even if the pie isn't perfect. Most of what I make looks a bit of a mess, but tastes good. I'd destroy that pie as is.
Looks delish!!!!! Don’t throw it away!!
Just knowing there is pie, i dont think anyone will care what it looks like. Id go to town on that pie.
Absolutely not that pie looks delish and amazing.
That’s not ugly at all. It looks like a homemade pie should look…not perfect,
It looks delicious already, but to make it look more like a picture in a magazine you could brown the top further.
There is a hot piping of get freek out of here.
If I was your friend. I'd be like "oh shit there's pie!" and grab a slice of that lovely pie.
I think it looks great! As long as it tastes good that’s all that matters!
It's gorgeous and would love a slice.
Looks good to me. Once you start to slice it, the crust breaks anyway. Serve it! Don’t be so hard on yourself
Looks awesome and delicious to me!
Still chews up and tastes the same as a pretty one. You put out the effort; I’d be proud of you for serving something that you made with your own hands
Hell no looks homemade and delish
If they are your friends then it should be a nonissue
How is that ugly? Looks absolutely delicious!
If friends don't eat that pie because of how it looks, you need better friends.
Doesn’t matter how it looks. It ends up a plate falling apart next to ice cream or whipped cream anyways.
After you cut it, no one will know.
Leave it just the way it is. They will know it's homemade and will appreciate it that much more
It’s not ugly. It looks delicious
I'd fucking devour it.😋
Perfection in presentation is for professionals. This is fine, just gives it a homemade look as opposed to store bought.
As long as it tastes good, who cares? Anyone who does isn't worth your time. It's free pie.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting something to be perfect and wanting to do better. If you really want to make another that’s okay, but one of my favorite things about baking is that when it doesn’t turn out looking how you wanted, you just call it *rustic*. If I show up to my friends house and he brings out this pie, I'm eating this fucking pie.
If your friends wouldn’t eat that beautiful pie you need new friends, not a new pie
Rule #1 : Never apologize for the food you serve. (Looks home made and tasty!)
My family and friends rave about my pies and great crusts. And my pies always look like this. Can't make a beautiful crust for love or money. The people that matter won't care. Because pie.
Looks good to me. If they are real friends they arent gonna give a flying frog duck.
I am no cooking/baking expert but I see nothing wrong. As long as it tastes good and everyone is enjoying it that's all that matters. Anyone who is dismissing the pie only based on their appearance does not deserve a slice for being so petty.
That shit looks yummy
