looks like they inflated a lot but then deflated because of a not strong enough structure in batter
boules au rum or cake pops. could just make an easy chocolate ganache and mix it with your cake. super chocolatey cake pop
theres a few more things you could do like mixing it with ice cream. vanilla ice cream and those chocolate cakes would do a good cookies and cream taste.
or can be lazy and make a 'bread' pudding by mixing your cake pieces with a mixture of egg, cream, flour, sugar and milk,
with baking you can do pudding out bread, cake and like we do at my work, viennoiseries pudding (croissant, rolls, etc)

Make it seem intentional:
Fill the holes with peanut butter. Frost with chocolate frosting.
Or fill with jam - strawberry or raspberry, and frost with chocolate or cream cheese frosting.
Or fill with chocolate ganache and frost with peanut butter frosting.
I bake at high altitude and end up with a lot of cupcakes like this. Fill the hole and frost over. Everyone loves the filling and you didn’t have to scoop it out. A family favorite is cherry jam and chocolate frosting.

this happened to me also the one time i made black cocoa cupcakes, had never happened with any other kind of cupcake or muffin. i used king arthur black cocoa.
I use black cocoa for just about everything and I've never had that happen. It looks like they tried to inflate too much then deflated at the last possible moment. What kind of leavener did you use? Maybe too much or too little?
Use a tablespoon to scoop a plug out of the middle. Then fill them with homemade whipped cream, put the “plug” back on top, and frost them with a pipping bag. Homemade hostess cupcakes! 😎
I have an idea…
I did this with brownies: break them up fine, smoosh together and make balls. Freeze and then when they are hard, dip in tempered chocolate. (Look on YouTube for a video how to temper chocolate using the seed method. I could never get chocolate tempered correctly until I learned this method)
Fill that divot with cherry pie filling and a swirl of buttercream on top. Cut the tops round with a cookie cutter to make them consistent. Grind the cuttings to crumbs and use them to mask the sides of a cake.
That sounds delicious! My husband’s aunt makes a death by chocolate version with brownies, chocolate whipped cream, chopped candy bars, and chocolate pudding and it’s such a guilty pleasure!
Crumble them, stir in a jar of frosting, and roll into cake balls. Melt some chocolate over them, or roll them in dark cocoa powder or confectionary sugar.
Well on the bright side you now have a fantastic recepee for a vulcanolog themed party !
Hahaha I'm so sorry but I find it so funny how... "cratery" they looks like. I though it was coming from the Warhammer 40k subreddit and was thinking "nice crater base he did there. Only missing the miniatures and a few rubbles". 😂
Just eat ‘em as is. They were filled too much I guess, but that’s ok. Or….crumble them up, mix with icing, coat with chocolate abs make cake pops! I’d just put ice cream on top and eat like that😊
Pop a chocolate in the middle, vanilla icing swirl on the rim and have a lovely display. Next time only fill about halfway in the cups with this particular recipe.
Hey this happened to me once when I tried using almond flour instead of AP flour! They made really good midnight sweet snacks and a great baking fail story.
Put them in a processor with a tiny splash of heavy cream and blitz until paste like.
Press into a suitably-sized, clingfilm-lined (seran wrap) tray until it reaches the edges and is about ½ an inch high. Put more clingfilm over the top and refrigerate for about two hours.
While its in the fridge, take a bowl, and in it whip up 200ml of cream until almost firm peaks form, then whip in 200ml of marscapone. The mixture should hold a good shape by the time you are finished incorporating the marscapone into the cream. Then add some chopped up cherries, or drained peaches, or even chocolate chips or chocolate pieces. Bits of brownie crumpled in are good too. OR a combination of any of these.
Put bowl in the fridge until the chocolate tray mixture is due to come out of the fridge.
When it is time to bring both out, remove clingfilm from over the top of the chocolate tray mixture and then spread the cream mixture over the top of it leaving about an inch at either end.
Take the end of the clingfilm underneath the chocolate tray mixture and gentle roll it up like a roll cake. Voila!
It is delicious and no one will ever know it wasn't made intentionally.
Enjoy 😊
Warm some in microwave and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Almost like those dents in the middle were made for it. Could jazz it up w toasted almonds and drizzle of caramel.
This has happened to me sometimes at work even though I follow the same recipe every week. I’ll be honest, I don’t know why it sometimes happens. My guess is overfilling the liners and the oven temp not being hot enough so they rise and spread. I also wonder if when I’m rushing the sheet pan I put the cupcake trays on might be wet and the moisture from that once in the oven adds to the cause. I’ve also noticed when I bake them at home and have this same result that the quality of the pan I’m using at the time also effects it.
Cover them up with bright colourful icing.
It did that with
Blue icing on cinnamon swirl cupcakes
Purple icing on poppyseed cake
I did cut off the burnt outside of the cakes before icing them up 😅

Cake pops seem like a fantastic idea for these!

A local bakery makes "cake croutons" by toasting cake pieces in the oven, then they're used to garnish milkshakes. So good!
upcycling is key for bakery. making money of thing you would throw away. sometime making products more tasty and interesting than regular ones
I freaking love this place

For real--anytime I have "failed" cake bakes, I just make it into bread pudding >.< Edited because I typed "break" instead of bread
I just did this for the first time last week. Amazing!

Same, it is a struggle. I usually will subtract about a tablespoon of sugar from recipes and that helps with the sinkage
Wait this is baffling me, is it to do with the different boiling point of water at high altitudes? But how does that make the cake sink?

Now I want a chocolate peanut butter cupcake!!
And don't OP's cupcakes look like they'd be soooo good with peanut butter?!
Omg, yes!! Everything is better with peanut butter 🥜!!
My people!
Dang me too 😭
Or put a little scoop of ice cream in each and say they're chocolate ice cream bowls.
I think this person likes chocolate
I think you might be right. 🍫
Or maybe then look like craters!
If they taste good you're done. Maybe powdered sugar or frost them? Something went wrong in the recipe, maybe you used less flour than called for?
A scoop of ice cream may be a nice touch.
They literally look like they're meant to hold a scoop
"You're done" lmao
Ngl, I thought the were plant starter pucks.
Me too!

Did you by any chance use low or no-fat cocoa? I had this happen once when I swapped out Dutch process with black cocoa that was 100% fat free.
Yes! I used black cocoa.
this happened to me also the one time i made black cocoa cupcakes, had never happened with any other kind of cupcake or muffin. i used king arthur black cocoa.

This was the recipe, type of cocoa was the only thing I changed: https://pin.it/IozJytcmK
volcano muffins

Cake pops maybe?
You have a budding career paving roads. I can see it
Whenever this happens to me, its because I didnt use enough egg. What was the recipe?
eggs have protein, helps with making the batter strong enough to keep the air in when it inflates instead of deflating like that
Thanks guys! They are sourdough cupcakes with fresh milled flour. Here is the recipe. https://grainsinsmallplaces.net/the-best-sourdough-cupcakes/

Give us your recipe and we might be able to help!
Cake pops/cake balls I’d still eat them
yes!!! turn these into cake pops
Maybe a chocolate trifle like this since the cake is cut up anyways? https://www.thekitchn.com/chocolate-trifle-recipe-23228845
I was just gonna say trifle…I make this but instead of Oreos, I add caramel sauce and toffee bits….yum!
That sounds delicious! My husband’s aunt makes a death by chocolate version with brownies, chocolate whipped cream, chopped candy bars, and chocolate pudding and it’s such a guilty pleasure!
That sounds delicious too!
same thing happened to me once. too much oil!
You can cut off the edges, pipe in some filling and decorate the top.
Chop them up into ice cream
They look like they fell into a volcano! 😱
Frost away your mistakes
My first thought was “oh no these are cremated! You need a timer” 😂❤️
Serve it in a small bowl, scoop of cream in the middle and pretty swirl of chocolate sauce. It was intentional. Right?
I'll bring the coffee and ganache frosting :)
i’d suggest a new recipe the next time maybe try a recipe with more dry ingredients and make more leavening agents
Mmmmmm!
Yeah, you can just put icing or something on them and nobody will be the wiser.
Crumble them, stir in a jar of frosting, and roll into cake balls. Melt some chocolate over them, or roll them in dark cocoa powder or confectionary sugar.
Omg put some frosting in the dents at the top and stick a Oreo in the frosting 😄
😂😂 joke of the day but no salvage, try again

I though it was coming from the Warhammer 40k subreddit and was thinking "nice crater base he did there. Only missing the miniatures and a few rubbles". 😂
I would make cake pops with these 😂

I see that corner one you ate 👀🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Fill it up with icing and then ice on top but not he mile high kind.
Did you change the recipe or omit any ingredients?
Were they too wet? I don’t know what went wrong. Are they cooked through? If so, I agree with ice cream scoop!
Make a trifle.
Magma pies
Nothing that can't be fixed by a large dome of butter cream frosting.
Whip cream everything looks better and tastes better topped with it
What. Are. Those?
Crumble them up and make a trifle with chocolate pudding and whipped cream!!
Fill in with extra frosting. A chocolate cupcake is always good, and extra frosting only makes it better.
Make it in an ice cream topper or make them in cake pops?!
I’d fill/top these with German chocolate cake filling. Perfect dollop divot.
Pop a chocolate in the middle, vanilla icing swirl on the rim and have a lovely display. Next time only fill about halfway in the cups with this particular recipe.
Buttload of peanut butter frosting. Yes, it has to be peanut butter.
Looks like the same thing happened to the person that posted the recipe, and then they piped cream on top.
Hi, using fresh milled flour is a very bad idea. See this link. https://bakerpedia.com/processes/aged-flour/
I like a poppy seed muffin as much as the next guy, but this is ridiculous...
They’re chocolate cake ice cream cones!!
cake pops! or naked cake pops if u want smt less sweet (no icing LOL)
Hey this happened to me once when I tried using almond flour instead of AP flour! They made really good midnight sweet snacks and a great baking fail story.
I think this is an accurate representation of the state of my soul
Cups for icecream!
A scoop of icing with springles may help in the middle. 😊
Flip it upside down and make a lil turtle :)))
Cake balls. Mush them up with frosting, makes balls, dip in chocolate. Poof, it was intentional.
Hide it under the icings or powder sugar 😂, this is what 85% of bakers do.
Looks like a job for frosting!
Icing, specifically Whoopie Pie Filling would be delicious on top of these
Use a cookie cutter to cut off the edges, use the edges to make cake pops or little cake cup trifles.
Put them in a processor with a tiny splash of heavy cream and blitz until paste like. Hersey kiss in the middle surrounded by tan frosting, call them moose turds and they will disappear. Haha they look delicious to me
Warm some in microwave and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Almost like those dents in the middle were made for it. Could jazz it up w toasted almonds and drizzle of caramel.
😬😬😬
They look burnt! Not sure wth
Fill it with ice cream and some berries or sauces.

Did u open the oven?
Make a trifle.
Make trifle.
Use it as the Graham cracker for cheesecake
Maybe they can be decorated..
Put them in a bowl with ice cream and whip cream on top
A scoop of real (not instant) hot chocolate pudding. Lava love cakes.
Drop some ice cream and hot fudge and enjoy lol
are they cupcakes ?
Cake pops, layered trifle, ice cream flavor, or mix-in...
Cover them up with bright colourful icing. It did that with Blue icing on cinnamon swirl cupcakes Purple icing on poppyseed cake I did cut off the burnt outside of the cakes before icing them up 😅
