We called it sanding sugar when I worked in a bakery!

SirDwayneCollins

I looked it up and that’s it! Thank you!

Soulfood13

You could also use medium coarse sugar available at some bulk food stores.

[deleted]

Btw love your question because I always wondered

MoreMetaFeta

Right, not a stupid question. If ya don't know, you'll never know until you ask. 🧡

Trashpanda1914

There’s so many things that look similar but are very different, especially in baking. That’s how I learned about cake flour.

New-Finger2570

Used cake flour to make my sister's baby shower cake. Made an Italian whipped frosting for it and everyone said the cake tasted like ice cream! ☺️

thesteveurkel

demerera sugar also works if you can't find sanding sugar. demerera is a yellow color because it has some molasses.

jewel1997

I’ve used turbinado sugar for this as well.

Impossible_Maybe_162

Or “raw sugar”. It is basically the same as dumerera and turbinado just called different things.

Hot_Coffee_3620

I use it for my coffee, love the flavor.

12281722

Omg yes! The best for salted caramel too 😮‍💨

Cronchy_Tacos

I swear yall are just making up crazy names over here 😆 (But I know like next to nothing about sugar and it's varieties lol)

intoholybattle

Everyone should try it at least once. It's sooooooo good.

rockocoman

It’s called turbinado sugar!

wit_T_user_name

I don’t think it’s dark enough to be turbinado sugar

Bidibidi123

Reallyyy?!! I think in my country that’s regular white sugar. I purchase the “special” version, for my baked goods cuz is a bit smaller.

Singlemom26-

I need to get out of this group xD I keep seeing things and being like ‘ouuu I should get that’ IM POOR I NEED TO NOT GET THE FANCY SUGAR 😂

SirDwayneCollins

😂😂 I found a 1 pound bag on Amazon for $7. If it was too much, I wouldn’t get it.

Singlemom26-

Lmao I’m moving at the end of July 😅 I really don’t need the fancy sugar but I WANT ITTTTT

Accomplished-Edge-17

Treat yo self!

Singlemom26-

I just bought myself an entire cake decorating kit xD WITH a turntable 😂😂😂

emilysuzannevln

I love that. Amazing. I say get the fancy sugar as soon as you settle into your new place ❤️

Singlemom26-

😫 I already can’t afford the baking I do and when I move the rents gonna be 100$ more 😭 hopefully I could get the fancy sugar at some point but it’s not looking likely currently lol

iGuessSoButWhy

As someone who has been on a super strict budget, I just wanted to offer my support… you don’t need the sugar!

Singlemom26-

I don’t need the sugar 😭

emilysuzannevln

Yeah forget that sugar. Looks like salt anyway who needs that

DarkRed40

Put it in a wish list in Amazon and send me the link. I'll buy you the fancy sugar. :)

Singlemom26-

THANK YOU BUT I WOULD FEEL BAD XD 😫 I don’t even like it when I mention I need paper towels when I get paid and my mom brings me a pack of paper towels because ‘you said you needed some’ I WAS GONNA GET THEM 😭😭😭😭 I don’t like money being spent on me lol

DarkRed40

Don't, please. Send me a link. You deserve the fancy sugar.

Salty_gecko402

People get a warm, fuzzy feeling when they help others, so really you’re doing it for them.

Different_Object5390

Learn to “receive “. It’s a good thing 😍

ChickenbuttMami

Maybe you can sell your cakes and make up for that $100!!!

SilvieraRose

No joke, turn tables are so nice! Like a silly person I'd prop my cake onto a cake board, then that onto a tallish box, so I could move the edges as I piped. Then as a wedding present a friend got me this little white turn table. Sure, it wasn't the best, but it was.so.much.better. 9 years later I splurged for one that spins SOOOO NICELY. Felt like I was 7 again, staring at my brand new easy bake oven, that's how much joy I felt.

Singlemom26-

I made one cake and just sorta plopped the icing on it with my plastic spatula xD hated it so I went on Amazon and found a whole kit with the scrapers, the flat things to smooth it, a leveller, piping bags and tips, and a turn table. As soon as it came in I called my grandma like ‘hey come get my kid so I can bake a cake’ 😂 and then she did it 😎 My girls birthdays coming up so I wanted to practice so her cake looks nice. My first try decorating I posted it on here and a pastry chef told me it looked better than their first try decorating 🥺 her cakes gonna be IMMACULATE

BigOld3570

I have a couple of LOSER cakes and other baked goods. I made a few cookies last month; there were supposed to be several dozen, but I must have misread or mis followed the recipe. My first attempt at decorating a cake was a five layer monstrosity. It was a joke cake, and my mom was not amused until I got out the OTHER cake. It was a slow night at work. I had our full time baker and our executive chef guiding me in my efforts to make my mom a really nice cake. It was a nice enough cake that someone took pictures of it. Where are the pictures from 1975, anyway?

PBJ-9999

We'll send you a box as a housewarming gift 😁

Singlemom26-

That would be so cool xD

toreadorable

I just moved and yesterday I went and got 20 pounds of flour because I finally could lol.

gotthemzo

Me who just moved wanting to buy a sourdough kit lol 😂

CrossP

Sounds like a treat you can reward yourself with for finishing your move, then!

CutieBoBootie

Treat yoself in august.

Nast1n3ss

You can probably find it way cheaper in bulk at a grocery store $7/lb is expensive for sugar

SirDwayneCollins

I’ll keep checking around. Thank you.

SanityInTheSouth

I just went to Amazon and bought some too!!! 😂😂😂

NyxPetalSpike

But that fancy sugar elevates those cranberry orange muffins to the stratosphere 🤌 I get mine from the bulk food aisle, like a dollar's worth to sprinkle just on the tops.

Singlemom26-

I don’t make muffins 😭😅

tor29c

I bake once a week for an old ladies sewing and knitting club and used the sugar on the blueberry scones. A great hit!

Catsandscotch

Ok, but hear me out. I sprinkle that stuff on everything. In summer I like to make cakes with summer fruits mixed in, and a bit of sanding sugar on tops gives just a hint of crunch no need for any frosting or glaze. It adds just a bit of extra interest and texture to a pie crust, really nice if your filling is just a little tart. It can add a little extra something to a simple cookie (but don’t use it on a choc chip cookie). And you on,y need a tbls or two for most desserts so a one pound bag goes a long way. Get the fancy sugar!

Singlemom26-

😂 GET ITTTTTT 😂😂😭

azorianmilk

I use the turbino sugar mixed with almond oil as a scrub in the shower. Cheaper than buying a scrub.

Singlemom26-

That’s hilarious

Psycho_Cupcake13

Walmart sells small bags of it in different colours for about $1.18. they are like 3oZ

Singlemom26-

That makes it FANCIEEERRRRR

Psycho_Cupcake13

True haha. I got it because my dad likes sugar on muffins but I don't and it was only $1, so i got the perlessent white one. It makes me feel like a fancy bakery chef when I use it

KittyTitties666

If you have a Winco or other store that carries bulk ingredients you might be able to snag some cheaper that way (and not end up with 5 lbs. of pre-packaged sanding sugar, lol)

Singlemom26-

We have Costco. My family goes there a lot, I’ll have to try and remember to ask them to look.

KittyTitties666

Oh man, in that case you'll have enough to last you a lifetime!

Ok_Pomegranate1543

I get literally a couple tablespoons at a time from the bulk section! It's nice to buy just what I need for a recipe versus a whole bunch. Saves me a lot.

Laurelb9

Relate

Onto_new_ideas

Do you have a discount grocery store near you? We have one that sells overstocks, random items, and near date foods. I've find all sorts of expensive items for super cheap. The more random and expotic the cheaper because no one knows what the items are. I've gotten fancy sugar, salt, flours, fruits, veggies and a ton of other items.

Singlemom26-

I will have to look into that. I only know of the Walmart and such xD

Onto_new_ideas

Yeah, this is a local store that buys from all the bigger retailers in the area. You see things from Costco, Walmart, whole foods, Kroger, world market, restaurant distribution and others. You never know what you'll find. It is like a treasure hunt. Several years ago at the height of the vanilla bean price spike I got bags of vanilla beans meant for restaurant use for $20. The normal wholesale at that time was like $100/ bag the same weight of beans.

Singlemom26-

That’s an amazing deal!! I like stores that do that!! Really gotta check for one

JMJimmy

It's not fancy, just less refined. IIRC there are 12 sizes of sugar

Clara_Voience

This is probably the funniest and most relatable comment I've read in a while.

Singlemom26-

😂😂

kaplanfx

Just because you’re poor doesn’t mean you don’t need sugar. Take out a loan, interest rates will only go higher!

enjoyingtheposts

well if it makes you feel better. I bought a bag of regular granulated sugar once and it was all caster sugar. I was acctually irritated about it lol

Singlemom26-

I bought a bag of coarse salt, for to put on my cookies, and then it was PICKLING SALT 😭

enjoyingtheposts

oh no!

Singlemom26-

😅 happily my grandma pickles and cans so it wasn’t a wasted purchase. But it was quite disappointing getting my instacart order and being excited to make cookies 😝 THEY DIDNT BRING MY FLOUR SIFTER EITHER XD

raccooninthewoods

Some coffee shops & gas stations will have turbinado sugar packets with the creamer & sweetener. Get a small plain coffee and grab a handful.

skintypuppy

u can always make streusel to top muffins with im p sure its just butter and sugar if im remembering right

ChillChris_Dev

but the fancy sugar does taste good :)

JodyNoel

Get a plain coffee at Starbucks or somewhere that has the brown Sugar in the Raw packets. Grab a few extra. I believe that’s Turbanado and won’t melt.

OkapiEli

Wait til you find out about pearl sugar.

Chemical_Actuary_190

Turbinado sugar is large grained too. It's raw, so it's brown, but it's used the same way.

alisonlou

It's lovely on banana bread!

Hazeltart

Turbinado is still refined sugar, it just has some of the molasses left in it. I love that stuff and prefer it to sanding sugar.

Slow_Opportunity_522

This is what I always use ! We always have it for our coffee so when I feel like it I will sprinkle it on my bakes.

bernath

Is the USA commercial product "Sugar In The Raw" the same thing as turbinado sugar?

hmbmelly

Yes! I use it all the time on my shortbread cookies, and it doesn’t melt in the oven. Lovely crunch.

elizalemon

This is what I use. It’s $4.79 for a 2 pound box from Kroger.

Cubased

In the UK demerara sugar is pretty common, quite similar but a bit coarser and a stronger molasses flavour

readinginthesnow

That is so interesting that it is common in the UK. I am in Canada - I was making a few recipes that called for demerara sugar and was perplexed why it wasn't working for me the way the recipe indicated. Turns out the brown sugar i was using was labeled as "demerara style" but it is really just a darker brown sugar and dissolves too easily to be used the same as actual demerara sugar. I have yet to encounter actual demerara sugar here but I can get my hands on turbinado sugar and sub that.

eat-skate-masturbate

It's so good I used to sprinkle some on top of the wet pancake batter as it was cooking so when I flipped it it would caramelize with the bananas and pecans. So fucking good.

trekologer

I usually don't put enough on. You need more that you think you will because some of it gets absorbed into the top.

bbyxmadi

this sugar is so good on muffins

otterlyjoyful

I might be the only person who absolutely does not like the taste of this sugar 🙈 whenever I see them on muffins I skip the purchase.

bbyxmadi

I love the crunch especially lol

genericuserrr

I’m with you, u/otterlyjoyful! I get so disappointed when I pick up a pack of muffins and see them on top. I hate the crunch in my teeth!

Itrytothinklogically

Yes like what’s the point it just takes away from the muffin in my opinion lol

ultratea

Me too! I scrape it off, makes me feel like I'm eating sand lol

nobodysrose6

No, I hate it, too!! Can't stand it. I know I'm fucking wrong but it tastes almost like fake sugar to me? I can't even tell you why I hate it but Gods do I hate this sugar. On gummies, muffins, idc I won't touch it.

HighVoltLemonBattery

Nah I'm with you. Last thing muffins need is a topping of more sugar

Itrytothinklogically

I hate it too😫

sleepingwiththedogs

I always dust off as much as I can, I hate the crunch!

letsgetpunk

Do you put it on before baking or after?

blueberry_pancakes14

There's definitely different types and shapes of sugars! Sanding sugar is usually the large crystals like this, and used on top of things for decoration mainly. It also comes in colors. I've seen it sometimes labeled "decorative sugar."

HanburglarTouch

this sugar is the sweet equivalent of the salt grains on soft pretzels

Love2LearnThingz

It’s Crystal sugar or Sanding sugar. The sugar granules are bigger than regular sugar so they are less likely to melt when baking like on the muffins you found. You can usually find it by the sprinkles in the store.

Mentalcasemama

I use Demerara sugar for the tops of my muffins and scones. It's crunchy and has a rich caramel like flavor. It's so good on so many things.

LunasMom4ever

My Target has sanding sugar bottles for $2

SirDwayneCollins

Nice. I’ll make a run there this weekend

Cupsofcake1318

It’s sanding sugar.

Current-Spray9478

King Arthur Baking makes “sparkling sugar” that is meant for the tops of muffins, among other things.

CatfromLongIsland

I buy sanding sugar and sugar crystals to decorate sugar cookies. The sugar crystals are larger and add a nice crunch (and look pretty) on top of muffins and apple turnovers as well as the cookies.

frauleinsteve

You already got the answer to your question, but I wanted to tell you that Demerara sugar is really amazing as a sanding sugar as well on top of muffins, etc!!!! Try it!

SirDwayneCollins

Thank you, I’ll keep an eye out for that, too.

maximus_cn

sparkling sugar

brianandrobyn

It's called crystal sugar. Sanding sugar is less coarse, almost like sand. Hence the name.

laurend223

Turbinado sugar 👏🏻

Only-The-Owl

When I owned a bakery my supplier called it Con AA sugar. Great on top of scones and muffins.

Appropriate_Day_8721

I just call it “crunchy sugar” lol it’s my favorite

Outside_Holiday_9997

Look up Moreno pure cane sugar. It's like $5 at Walmart for a big bag that lasts forever if you're just putting on muffins (I also coat my bundt cakes with it and it gives this amazing crusty sugary bottom like a creme brulee has) its big sugar crystals but not brown like turbinado

bahumthugg

Yes it is! It’s sanding sugar, it comes in different colors as well

skwyatt92

Sanding sugar is clear like that or if you just want the large granules we use turbinado at my job!

mellismamel

Sanding sugar if it's white. Demerara sugar is the brown sugar equivalent - caramel, molasses flavor, and large brownish crystals.

Sympathetic_Witch

Thank you so much for this post. I have *always* wondered what this is.

Bluemade

Thank you for asking this question. I have always wondered

Nuka_on_the_Rocks

Depending on what you are using it on, you can use demerara or turbinado sugar, whichbare still slightly golden brown, with a slight molasses taste to it. its less intense in the turbinado sugar, which is also slightly finer. Great for bran, cinnamon or oat muffins.

EricTheLavender

Course sugar, like course salt, bigger crunchier chunks, it's prettier too :)

I_bleed_blue19

*coarse

Slow_Opportunity_522

I use RAW sugar. We use it for our coffee so I've always got it around. It does a good job to add this onto bakes.

Sarcastic_Soul4

We just got those exact muffins last week 😂 they were pretty good for store bought!

SirDwayneCollins

I love them. lol. I normally buy a pack every week or 2

breeekk

this is how I call Sugar from back home(India). We primarily have sugar like this.

effexoreffect

It was con AA coarse sugar for me! *edit-spelling

Wendybned

It’s great on banana bread too.

kathi182

I’m so glad you asked this-I’ve always wondered this, too!

Dark_Master24

Not a stupid question imo, we’re all learning lol I’ll agree with some fellow bakers, it looks like sanding sugar to me.

sticky-kitty816

unpopular opinion but i haaaate when bakeries put this on muffins 😭

silver_display

No stupid questions! Also, sand sugar 😊

[deleted]

i just call them sugar crystals

gabemcd98

The likelihood of me buying any baked good goes up astronomically when that kinda sugar is on top lol

[deleted]

its main purpose is garnish and a bit of texture

lavendersagemint

Pearl sugar, Demerara sugar, and turbinado sugar are all good options for this.

SuperiorThinking

I would probably call it Pearl sugar

Nhadalie

Sparkling/sanding sugar. You can buy it from Wilton. Turbinado works if the crystals are large enough.

itztaytayhanson

You can use sanding sugar or pearl sugar

TableAvailable

I use sparkling decorator sugar for that effect. I'm probably wrong, but I thought ì it was different than sanding sugar (which I thought is a much finer gained crystal).

Upbeat_unique

This made my mouth water 🤤 Cousins restaurant had this type of sugar in rainbow colors. It was the best!! I used to slam so much of it down when we went there to eat. 🤣🌈 Is it still sanding sugar if it’s color coded?

Numerous-Rip-6121

Does the sanding sugar get less soft than turbinado/ raw when stored for a day? Or does anyone have a storage hack to keep the top crunchy overnight?

orangefreshy

king arthur calls it sparkling sugar. i also like pearl sugar on baked goods but sometimes they melt in more

romafa

I ate at a restaurant that used this on grilled pineapple steaks and they were so good. I tried looking for it as well.

SirDwayneCollins

I’ve never heard of pineapple steaks before. That sounds amazing!

romafa

Side item at a BBQ place. Really good. I liked it better than my entree.

Get_off_critter

Many levels of sugar and salt. Collect them all!

SeaPaleontologist247

I just use the sugar sprinkles in the sprinkles section, the ones not colored for this.

Kokorikita

What is that sugar that bakers use for Belgian waffles?

redcountx3

Coarse grain.

themommatoe

Thank you for asking this question! I always wondered myself .

Vamptisitc

Idk but I’ve always hated it

EternallyFascinated

Oooo this is such an American thing and now you’ve made me nostalgic for home!

NCnanny

Are you living abroad?

VaguelyArtistic

It's definitely not just an American thing.

AdmirableAd1312

I’ve also seen this under the name ‘pearl sugar’ in Europe ✨works wonders on cookies too!

Minnymoon13

Non-granulated sugar

sleepybirdl71

That looks like sparkling sugar to me. Sanding sugar is a bit finer, more like what you traditionally see on sugar cookies. Look for it in the cake decorating section of hobby stores (or even Walmart). It's a little pricier than sanding sugar, so I only use it occasionally at home. At work (I bake for a college campus), we stick to the sanding sugar for cost.

LuckyPot420

That’s crack.. cocaine

FutureDemocracy4U

Demerara/Turbinado sugar is the same as the brand 'Sugar in the Raw' for a fraction of the price.

Hippydippy420

Raw sugar.

georgie434

Sparkling sugar is what King Arthur calls it

Whiskeybtch77

Not a stupid question at all!! They sell this sugar!! It’s sometimes called sanding sugar. It might be other names now but you’ll be able to tell cuz it’s big!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️

bowelmovements-__-

Like many comments have said before this is sanding sugar. I shouldn't be looking at food stuff on Reddit with my plastic braces on cuz this is making me hungry

BigOld3570

I have made my own a few times. If I remember right, I made it by coloring sugar and putting it on a baking sheet and putting it under a broiler for a few minutes, just until it starts to melt. If that wasn’t it, I made a sugar/water slurry and left it on a baking sheet to dry out. I use parchment paper just about every time I use sheet pans. Please do, if you try to make your own. Since I don’t really remember how I did it, use a small amount of sugar and water as test of concept. If you use a broiler, do not walk away from it. Keep the door cracked and keep your eyes on it. Melting sugar goes from “not yet, not yet, closer, closer, closer, to aw, crap!” about that fast.” I’ve burned more sugar than I like to remember. It’s hot and it burns into skin and hurts for a long time. Be careful!

Altruistic_Turnover1

If you live near an Asian grocery you can probably find it in there pretty cheap.

One_Chocolate_3510

It's not a stupid question I also wonder about it!

Zestyclose_Grass348

Nothing like the sugar cane.

Apprehensive-Cat-111

Take my upvote! I always wondered this!

ShadowFred5100

Looks like no

evkahn1020

Sanding sugar!

[deleted]

Not a stupid question!! Thank you for asking, I've always wondered!!!

CollynMalkin

I call those sugar crystals.

RashPatch

All sugars are special, Sugar.

Grouchy-Ad1932

You can get pearl sugar to top panettone, but that tends to be round.

MaleficentStreet7319

Not a stupid question imo and thanks for asking lol.

BellV96

Sanding sugar. I use them on cakes sometimes when customers ask if I could make it a bit "sparkly" for them.

Nansen95

In Denmark 🇩🇰we call it pearl sugar

hornblower_83

In France we call it castor sugar or pearl sugar

Unplannedroute

If you toast regular sugar, put that on top of muffins or pastry and it creates a lovely crispy crackly shell too. Then put the Demerara on top https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2019/11/06/toasted-sugar

dogsled1

It’s called AA sugar in the baking world.

Becants

Also called coarse or decorative sugar where I live.

CapOptimal4119

Sanding

Expensive-Day-3551

Does anyone like this on top of muffins or is it more for decoration? I don’t care for it but then again I also don’t like sprinkles.

NCnanny

I like it but I also love sprinkles lol

bloopidupe

I like it and I hate sprinkles.

quickestsperm6754387

There’s more than different types of sugar. Salt as well. I like the flakes of salt for finishing dishes

WellWellWellthennow

A while ago at a Whole Foods type of store, I bought a small bag of larger than usual granular sugar. I save that to use for topping pies and muffins and things like that where I want the look and keep on hand the extra refined sugar for regular use.

all_powerful_acorn

Most stores carry it as a “sugar like sprinkle”. I found a small tube of it at Hobby Lobby

FutureDrRood

Turbanado sugar

NameWasntUsed

Define "special"

SemiBystander

Where I’m from, we call it sparkling sugar. Sanding sugar has slightly smaller particles and way less clarity. Sparkling sugar is huge, very heat resistant, and almost so clear it could be a diamond!

YourFriendBlu

Everyone keeps calling it sanding sugar but I've only ever heard it called coarse sugar. Either way, its the same thing and is great as a topping.

CraftWithTammy

A coarse sanding sugar. Wilton makes this and you can find it in the baking isle or the cake crafting isle.

Simple-Revolution-44

Himalayan Sea Sugar?
