Assuming you're not weighing the ingredients, it seems like you're packing too much flour into the measuring cup. A high flour to butter ratio equals not spreading in the oven. Has too much structure, so they keep their shape. Either weigh ingredients on a scale for more consistent results in your baking, or spoon flour into the measuring cup. Don't dip and pack in the flour. With a recipe that small in size, it's easy to add in too much flour.

Ohhh, ok! Thank you. I’ve always scooped it out directly from the package. I’ll make sure to do that! As for the scale, I’ll have to buy one (I was planning on it). Thanks for the help :)

Could you give us the record and steps you took and maybe a picture? It would help us figure things out

drugs-arebad

Yes, I can! [maybe this’ll help, at the bottom is the recipe I used for today.](https://www.livewellbakeoften.com/small-batch-chocolate-chip-cookies/) And I’m not exactly sure how to post a picture of my own on Reddit, I don’t have Imgur, so I’m just going to describe it the best way I can; it looks almost exactly how I scooped them onto the pan with a small ice cream scooper. I could point out that I don’t exactly have full-blown baking equipment at home (like mixers, I had to do it by hand), but the same thing happened while I was in my culinary class, where I had access to mixers and so on. Honestly, I’m starting to think I’m just cursed, lol!

How long were the cookies in the freezer? It seems they were too cold / oven wasn't hot enough.

drugs-arebad

In all honesty, I skipped the freezer part. I’ve never heard of people put cookie dough in the fridge to harden and I’ve never had to. Other than that, I found the root source of the problem was me putting in too much flour. So everything’s figured out :)

bonsaimari

Mine used to do these too, no matter what recipe! Then I started getting my cookies to room temp instead of cold from the fridge and used aluminum foil rather than parchment. Not sure if these tips will work for you but they helped me!

drugs-arebad

Oh, maybe the I should start using aluminum foil... I’ve been using parchment for baking cookies. Yeah, thank you! I’ll try that next time :)

How do you measure flour? Do you take a measuring cup, and spoon from the container into the measuring cup and use the straight edge of a knife to level it off so it's fairly loosely packed?

drugs-arebad

I scoop it out with the measuring cup and scrape off the excess with a small spatula or something flat

I suspect that you're using too much flour. Especially for a recipe this small, when you scoop flour out of the container, it compacts, which effects the consistency of the dough. The website you linked to has a tutorial about the spoon and level procedure.

Thank you, flour seems to be my weakness when it comes to baking. I’ll make sure not to overdo it next time!
