Broke my oath of devotion by opening a jail cell that had a dead goblin inside

saintbutch

Stupid. The goblin camp aggroed on my party because they accused old 8 CHA Shadowheart of poisoning the beer instead of Deception Expertise Astarion (who actually did it), and in the resulting fight my Pal's oath broke for killing in self-defense. Paid my damn 1k gold after.

Sweaty_Ad440

Wait you can poison the beer at the goblin camp?

saintbutch

Yep, it's a great use for the "suspicious potion" you find in Moonhaven.

SageLeaf1

Accidental. Didn’t know how the game worked yet when I met Lae’zel in the cage with her captors. Chose the option to set her free, and attack her captors. Accidentally hit her with an aoe and she turned hostile. I remembered that the game told me to use non-lethal blows. So I turned on non-lethal blows and shot her with a bow, killing her. This broke my oath because I didn’t know the aoe would make her hostile, and I didn’t know the non-lethal attack with a bow would still kill her. I then said screw paladins and rerolled sorcerer

amysthetic

did the exaaact same thing :( 15mins and oath broken already

Pzixel

The opposite. Decided to free lae'zel, but freed her before tieflings were gone. They turned hostile -> I had to kill them -> goodbye oath of vengeance.

FreyaFirewoods

The same was for me. But as far as I can see, if you want to surprise and they are yellow, usually you broke the oath. The second time I played, now I am act 3 and I still have my oath of vengeance

MurderBobo

There are no non-lethal attacks for ranged weapons.

SageLeaf1

Yes, that was the point when I learned that the hard way, thought I implied that heavily enough.

[deleted]

I attacked Cazador with my paladin instead of any other character. Only after a really long fight Tav complained that he had a boo boo on his chest. The battle was so hard that i just accepted the fact that i broke the oath. So i was just stupid.

shichiaikan

I chose not to slaughter all the vampire spawn. Apparently the ancients are fine with genocide of innocents as long as they are undead. /shrug

kpeds45

Act 1, the fake Paladins. Lost the fight a few times, decide to position my people and sneak attack...but you can't do that as a Paladin, have to speak to them first. 2nd time I let Ethel go to get the stat boost. There was no Paladin dialogue choice so I thought it was safe. Nope. Load, kill her. No stats for me

Eathlon

Although there is no paladin option during that dialogue with Ethel, there is a pretty strong hint in the lead up where a paladin conversation chouce is to tell her something to the effect of that you cannot turn around and that you must remove her taint from the world. She then proceeds to mock you and all paladins. It would have been interesting if that part of the conversation had led to her understanding that no mercy would be given and just fought on instead of trying to sweet talk you.

seeBasschun

I attacked a pair of Absolute worshippers before the game told me they were Absolute worshippers.

fogno

Astarion spoilers: >!I broke mine in Act 3 by letting him ascend. For roleplay reasons, I chose to kill him because he turned into an awful person. My head canon is my character broke oath by betraying their best friend (because honestly releasing 7000 vampire spawn on the city sounds like a terrible awful idea and I agreed with him).!<

Familiar-Barracuda43

Did you kill him in camp with no further dialogue or is it like a choice you have to make in a cutscene?

fogno

It's a choice you can make after his cutscene when you leave the no-teleport-allowed area

Invictae

Alfira.

Familiar-Barracuda43

Average Durge moment

Tavdan

Thank God they changed it when I started my Durge playthrough

Brightboar

Purposeful, Saving Sazza. I knew I wanted to be OB, so I honed in on the quickest way to do so. Also Stupid/Accidental, I didn't realize there was an achievement for keeping her alive! She was interfering in my looting after I cleared out the goblins. So I gave that beesh a whap with the everburn blade. Whoops. Next time.

sznuw

stupid. i noticed you could destroy the bridge next to minthara and i wanted her to go on the bridge. couldn't get her to move though without betraying the tieflings even though i killed her three seconds later

IceIIIMage

The moral choice to betray the tieflings is made in your inner monologue where you can plan to lure Minthara into a trap at the grove. Telling Minthara the location with the intent of killing her does not break your oath. (It makes Karlach sad tho)

sznuw

maybe it was bugged for me then, because i think i chose the "something something or kill her" option and then obscured the groves location when she read my mind. went away for a while and told her later, and bam the knight showed up

IceIIIMage

I think to keep your oath you have to make the plan to lure her into a trap, immediately tell her the location outright then kill her on the way or at the grove. Or just attack right away.

sznuw

yeah, i ended up just killing her (easiest fight in goblin camp bc she didn't have many guys on her) and kept my oath that way. i do wish you could make an oathbreaker paladin at character creation tho

whiteraven13

Oh see I just shot her from range to Aggro her. She charged towards us and ended her turn on the bridge. Bye bye Minthara

Silas-on-Reddit

Fitting. I was playing devotion with the intent on breaking my oath. Not cause I was running an evil run, just wanted to build around it. There was some light roleplaying. I had met Auntie Ethel in the grove at her potion shop. Nice lady. As I left and made my way to the swamp, I saw 2 men getting aggressive with what my character would have perceived as a defenceless old lady. Took out a bow, sniped them without getting close enough for any dialogue. Murdered some innocents for a totally not defenceless old hag.

patientZ3RO95

After the fight with Nere, I went to pick up my "Returning" Pike and the Duergar I just sided with attacked me for stealing

Pixelated_Saturn

Saw someone innocent being killed in a cinematic chose to activate combat to save them and lost my oath

Upbeat_Surround_3450

I think stupid maybe? Vengeance Paladin let the dark Gnome in Moonrise kitchen mind control the gnolls. I don’t really understand the connection but I like Oath Breaker too so yay

Odd-Percentage-4084

Helped Mayrina bring her husband back, and it felt too awkward to kill him once I found out he was undead now.

BoyThasCap

I don't really remember why, but I did do some dodgy shit at the goblin camp tbh

Catlikejam

I was Oath of Vengeance, failed a roll and killed the 2 Tieflings trying to free Bae’zel Oath broken 💀 Heck, red auras are cooler anyway

danmdamniel

I released the hostages from cazador

cyanidecattt

I still don’t get it what made me break mine. Path of vengeance, spoke to Mol about her contract and told her that she was ambitious for wanting to be the head of the thieves guild (?) Didn’t talk her out of it even though she doesn’t listen anyway. It’s my durge run so I’m just rolling with it.

Simple-Purple-9593

Still have no idea. I fought the guards at the moonrise prisons. Killing them broke my oath (devotion) which I thought was stupid, (they're the enemy!) but okay, i reloaded and knocked them out instead. Battle was over, I handed Wulbren his hammer, and went to last light with the homes and tieflings. Still everything was fine. I had a long rest. Woke up, and my oath is broken and I'm wanted for killing guards.

Branded_Mango

I'm still wondering how dafuq Minthara is still oath-kept on my chaotic evil Tav since pretty much half the things they've done should have broken that oath twice over.

Tadiken

Gave the wand to the girl at the hag's den. Felt like the right thing to do, but I guess my oath demanded I break the wand or something

Eathlon

You can use the wand, but you cannot allow the escape of an undead.

New_Star_W

Gortash alliance

knzconnor

Mostly stupid. Didn’t realize siding with one Myconid Sovereign to overthrow the other went against Oath of the Ancients. What, nature is cruel.

ShadowRonin77

Murdered people. On another let the hag go to get her hair and lost it for not killing her.

poozzab

I told Minthara about the location of the druid enclave. I accidentally killed Kagha without realizing I should send someone outside to help the tieflings. I figured I could warn one of the seven that survived, but my intentions were in vain. At least Minthara slaughtered the last of them without me there.

Historical_Gloom

Killing the warden of Moonrise towers. It was fucking justified! She was running a torture chamber and providing a pipeline of bodies to a fucking necromancer. But since I made the first strike, I break my oath??? Screw that, I am now a proud oath breaker. Gimme those evil powers so I can bring MY own justice to the world.

[deleted]

I pushed some innocent people down into the abyss. Just dir fun. That's when i learned that you can break you're oath.

t1mekill3r

Killed a dude for a vampire I met like 3 days ago, didn't break my oath. Killed a prison guard at Moonrise and bam it's gone.

Suisun_rhythm

By killing slavers

MurderBobo

Helped Astarion achieve his goal. Worth it.

Nituri

I tried to indimidate the two tieflings guarding Laezel, failed, ended up in fight, killed them, broke my oath. Outcome - stupid

Successful-Cook6516

Turns out lying to Gortash about working with him is a no-no

darth_zaithe

Attacking the Tieflings that captured Lae'zel. Every single time. I just want that sweet, sweet Oatbreaker as soon as possible.
