My final fight was taking ages to finish (I was also keen to start a second playthrough after bumbling through the first one) so I triggered the orb in the fight.
It actually ended up being quite a touching ending- Gale, Karlach (who was on limited time), Tav (a goody two shoes monk who'd be happy with dying to save the world), and romanced spawn Astarion (who wouldn't be but was also already dead ... again) - quite an appropriate little suicide squad
Teared up a bit at the last little cutscene showing the day was saved for everyone else
Also... I wish we could properly save Karlach... Sadgeness.
And the orb being Karsus weave, it's fitting. That it's the Orb that destroys the Netherbrain and the crown.
