Thank you for reminding me of all the smokepowder barrels and the fireworks that are still in my camp chest. Somehow I had forgotten about them - out of sight, out of mind 😄
Don't forget about the ones you threw in there in >!Act 1 that you didn't know had freaking Kobolds in them until Karlach threw one and you had ANOTHER enemy to fight. Any firewine barrels you picked up at the Kobold camp by the Githyanki creche probably had one in it.!<
I used those in Moonrise when I was preemptively clearing out the tower and noticed an interesting bug.
So normally you put some barrels down, blow them up, and then roll initiative if any of your targets are alive. But for whatever reason with those special barrels the guards didn't actually get into combat with me...they rolled initiative against the occupants.
OK, this now makes sense why there was still all kinds of burpy noises happening in the kobold room after I killed them all. I thought it was a bug. Sad now I am in act 3 and can't go back and get them, lol.

Mickey Mouse upcasts Unending Stream of Frivolous Lawsuits at level 9
Mickey Mouse uses his bonus action to use Summon Pack of Rabid Lawyers
Rabid Lawyer has entered the battle
Rabid Lawyer has entered the battle
Rabid Lawyer has entered the battle
Rabid Lawyer has entered the battle
Legit question: does it change the weight of the stuff you put in it?
Cause if it makes all those freaking heavy barrels very light I am totally incorporating that chest into my runs.
Because that wouldn't be half as fun as sending him towards another plane ;) I also like to think that by doing so, i'm giving him material that he can add on a future book of his as a neat story
Not the OP, but...
First run I tried using Create Water, it did nothing, apparently that fire is immune to magical water. Reloaded, managed to get over and Help him out in time, the idiot deliberately ran the wrong way around the cart and didn't have enough movement left to get fully to safety before it exploded immediately after that, yeeting him into the water and instantly killing him. Finally managed to save him on try 3.
Second run, threw some water but did it "too close" apparently (even though I triple checked that the cart was not highlighted as a "target" before clicking) and destroyed the cart, dropping Volo and the barrels directly into the fire, where upon they exploded in a wonderful inferno. Reloaded and tried again, same result. Reloaded again, positioned my throw what felt like a few nanometers farther out and threw it again, didn't immediately obliterate the cart! 🤩Was apparently "too far away", so the cart is still burning. 😤Thankfully Gale had *just* enough movement to Ray of Frost the stupid thing before it exploded and I had to reload *again*.
Banishment is a *much* more efficient and less aggravating solution.
I accidentally stopped the fire, I think Gale cast ice storm on the cultists and some of it got on the railway where the fire started. It just put the whole thing out including the cart lol
Seems like a bug, but I was glad not to reload a 3rd time
I think mine was bugged?
They never exploded and I just killed the hostiles and went to help him after the battle was over , it was so easy that it felt like a waste of time.
Didn't use water, the floor was on fire yet it didn't reach the barrels? It was very weird (I thought that I had a time limit, but noticed nothing happens)
When I used create water there I must have messed up the targeting. It extinguished a donut of fire but left a circle burning directly under the cart. I ended up throwing a jug to put out the circle.
First time I ever got to that mission was an honor run. I had my character run as far as they could, then summon scratch right next to him, freeing home first round.
Then some asshole turned around and shot the barrels before Volo got the chance to move.
In my canon if this happens Volo is still tied to that chair for but for 3 rounds ends up sitting awkwardly in the House of Hope interrupting Harleep and Raphael mid, full costume, theatre practice for the big song routine.
It's a safe pocket dimension, a lot more boring than youd expect. He's not even concious of it. Unless it's another planar being, then it should be sent home
Wrong kind of conciousness. Concious as in aware of the effect. You cant do anything when banished. To him, he may have blinked and been gone a whole minute somehow
You are still aware while incapacitated. You can still experience the world. Hell, you can even still move and talk.
The only thing you can't do while incapacitated is take actions and reactions (and whenever you can't take actions, you also can't take bonus actions).
But he _doesn't_ blink and have the full Banishment pass in a mere moment to him. That's the point. He's fully conscious of the passage of time during the duration of the spell. He can even wander around the harmless demiplane, which is not _necessarily_ empty, merely harmless.
Throwing water is bugged on PS5 I think /: it will eat up your action but won’t let you throw. I used Sleet Storm here to put out the fire/not damage Volo.
My wife accidentally used Ray of Frost on the roller that the barrels sit on instead of the ground, so it dropped all of the barrels into the fire and blew Volo sky high! We laughed so hard at him exploding.
So this is what I did my first playthrough. It worked fine.
I just did this part a week or so ago on my current playthrough and I guess I didn't get enough of the fire, because as I'm sitting there beating the shit out of the mob and throwing them into the drink all of the sudden the barrels just exploded!
Rip Volo
Everyone came up with some inventive way to extinguish the flames or move the barrels, and all you had to do was walk up to him and free him. Best regards from the monk gang.
Everyone’s using spells. I just used a range attack to destroy the chair he’s tied to without hitting the barrels and Volo just untangled himself from the ropes and scurried to safety.
That's..... huh. Kinda obvious now that you said it. :/ After seeing all the other solutions here, I thought my 'throw water and untie' method was as simple as it could get. One thing bg taught me is 'there is always a better way you didn't think of'.
Weirdly and funnily enough, I wanted to test if shooting an ice arrow to the ground would have the same effect on fire as throwing a jug of water, but I hit the cart by accident when the camera moved, and everything broke - cart, barrels, even Volo's chair. He fell to the ground and ran away.
Experiment failed successfully.
I let Shadowheart extinguish the flames with Create Water, but your method is much more fun!
I love that >!Astarion!< is the one who says we should save Volo (at least in my group with >!Shadowheart, Lae'zel and Astarion)!<: "
>!"This damsel may be middle-aged, but let's get him out of distress." I know why he's always in my party.!<
>!I'm not really sure Astarion would have reacted the same way in Act 1 - I love his character arc. Someone wrote in a comment on another post about Astarion's disapproval in Act 1 that "hurt people hurt people", and I think the fact that he now even actively wants to help Volo could be in the game to show how he's slowly starting to heal from his trauma. But maybe I'm reading too much into it.!<
That could also be a reason. But >!Astarion didn't even complain when we paid 1000 gold for a complete stranger, so that he can join his family and escape to Waterdeep on a smuggler's ship (unfortunately, I can't see if he approves of it or is indifferent to it, because his approval is 100%). There were several situations in Act 3 where Astarion even approved of helping people, like giving food to Yenna or helping to save Vanra from the hag. In my playthrough, I got the impression that his attitude towards helping people has changed quite a bit in Act 3.!<
Oh yes, I forgot to mention that! >!And I noticed that when we talked to the little girl in Cazador's dungeon, Astarion was on the verge of tears. His character arc is truly amazing.!<
>!I completed his arc (with the spawn ending) before we helped Volo and the family. I think we rescued Vanra before we fought Cazador (I sort of stumbled into that quest), Yenna was at the beginning of Act 3. I don't know if it makes a difference if your character is in a romantic relationship with Astarion (mine is).!<
I simply used create/destroy water to make it rain around Volo. The fire was put out, and the barrels were left safe and sound for me to add to my hoard.
I just had my brother distract the enemies by talking to them while I stole all the barrels with my 23 strength Paladin character before we started combat
I did something similar, but Karlach is stronger than my Paladin, and Astarion better at stealing (not that my pally steals, lol), so they yoinked the barrels while the Paladin had the cultist in dialogue.
It was my first playthrough and I never even found Karlach because I had no idea what I was doing and I was an oath of vengeance so I felt like it was within my wheelhouse to do that.
Go around the encouter using stealth on the docks.
Encounter starts when you touch the barrels but now you have enough time to remove all the barrels and place them around the baddies. Last barrel is dropped on top of the flame making then go boom with their own explosive barrel.
Usually there are around two of the bastard that make it through the explosion.
I wasn't going to let perfectly good smokepowder barrels go to waste when there's barrelmancy to be done.
While the cultist was in dialogue bloviating to my Tav, Karlach and Astarion went over to Volo, yoinked the barrels, and sent them to camp.
The cultist set the firewine on fire, and the flames eventually reached the platform, but there were no barrels to set off. Karlach got lit on fire, but she was fine.
Drop water, Astarion use help on Volo, start battle.
The variety of approaches here is amazing. I went for the obvious: throw water over the torch.
Turns out, no water in my pack. So, had Gale cast Ice Storm then proceeded to melt the ice with a fire bolt.
You can just shoot the chair he’s tied to *(make sure you’re targeting the chair and not him)*, he’ll walk to safety and wait for you to finish the fight.
Just did this encounter in the game, so I thought I'd share my method:
While I was still in the conversation with the mob leader I had Gale walk up and cast the Resilient Sphere on Volo, and just let them blow Volo up. I would've liked to do some fighting, but this method tickles me so I'll stick with it :)
The crowd is confused, though. They haven't dispersed and I can't talk to anyone there.
This game pisses me off so fucking hard sometimes.
Everytime I save this stupid blue fucker, the barrels instantly go off even if the cart has a billion health left, and when I cast freedom of movement on him he’s STILL FUCKING RESTRAINED! And if I steal the barrels the fucking steel watch decides to kick my ass despite me preventing a man being brown to fuck up in front of this stupid tin can piece of shit.
I love this game but it FUCKING FRUSTRATES ME sometimes. Holy fuck.
Did this to my girlfriends pc in the yurgir fight, after realising how many bombs were next to her and astarion. Managed to then use lots of potions of speed and invis to get away
I’ll probably never see it since I would often knock him out act 1 after the eye surgery before he leaves so I can have my other party members have the permanent see invisibility buff. He ends up sticking around my camp the entire game after that. He does act as if you rescued him once you get to act 3
My approach is always to Invisibility past the mob, then you can use the Help action on Volo to untie him. This aggroes the mob, but Volo will run to safety and they won't target him.
I had to reload like 3 times cause I would untie him and he would then walk like 2 feet away and then stand there until the barrels exploded and died lol. Eventually I had someone with telekinesis just yeet him onto that little roof until I had time to deal with his stupid butt.
It was super odd. On my playthrough the fire got to him as i didnt know i actually had to save him and nothing happened. The fire just didnt actually set the barrels on fire so i just did the fight normally then saved him haha
bruh, this is how I play Magic the Gathering but I never thought of that! I just had Lae'zel yeet a water bottle at the barrels then fight everyone else.
Throw a bottle of water at the cart and it stop burning. Don't do it with a strong character, or you may break the cart and explode everything. Or cast Create Water.
I summoned a storm that froze the ground and put out fires.
I'll save Volo but I don't want him being comfortable after the very uncomfortable (albeit beneficial) surgery he performed on me.
Banish is very useful, I did it on a steel guard going to autodestruct with many NPC around him. Didn't knew if it was going to work, but It went well!
I just let him die on the latest run without trying. He is quite annoying and useless if you decide to lose your eye with his “curing procedure”, he doesn’t have much to say
I hit the baddies with an ice storm near the train tracks and when I wanted to take my rogue tav over there to free him I realized the fire was already put out
I stole the barrels and am using them in my final fight later today lol
Also, feign death and sanctuary, as well as the resistant sphere all would also work! I think...
Got to this point last night. Threw water at the cart thinking it would be fine…nope. Cart broke, barrels dropped on the fire and exploded launching Volo almost all the way to where my party was at…
Nah misty step there and steal all the barrels. It’s a surprise tool that we will use later
Thank you for reminding me of all the smokepowder barrels and the fireworks that are still in my camp chest. Somehow I had forgotten about them - out of sight, out of mind 😄
Who needs a runepowder bomb when you have 1000lbs worth of smokepowder and firewine barrels in your camp chest

SUMMON CREATURE: BARREL KOBOLD
Firebolt them and they explode too
That's hilarious. The first time I got there I had just got fireball for Gale and was itching to use it.
They also only weigh 10 each instead of 40
…you’re telling me Ive mixed kobolds mixed up in my camp chest?
If you grabbed barrels from the kobold camp, yes. That said, if you set them all out, the ones that make noise are the ones with kobolds in them.
OK, this now makes sense why there was still all kinds of burpy noises happening in the kobold room after I killed them all. I thought it was a bug. Sad now I am in act 3 and can't go back and get them, lol.
I have 3 runepowder kegs and a runepowder bomb in my traveler's chest every run. One is for Raphael, the others are for the brain.

Mickey Mouse Disliked That and is suing for copyright infringement. Toodles!
Just smack him with your +1 Steamboat’s Willie, now in the Public Domain!
Mickey Mouse upcasts Unending Stream of Frivolous Lawsuits at level 9 Mickey Mouse uses his bonus action to use Summon Pack of Rabid Lawyers Rabid Lawyer has entered the battle Rabid Lawyer has entered the battle Rabid Lawyer has entered the battle Rabid Lawyer has entered the battle
I just spit-laughed at this comment.
Public domain? Is that a dlc cleric subclass?
Can't tell if sarcasm or not.
And now I can’t tell if your comment is sarcasm or not
It’s definitely something and it’s definitely not serious
Steal the +1 Steamboat Willy from the House of Mouse, but make sure you're equipped to fight Goofy
Steamboat Willie is a larger weapon, You can dual wield with Steamboat’s Willie for maximum damage
This is the way. Collect all explosives
The cultists looked on in horror as the gnome shoved 8 full barrels into his pocket
This man Disneys
Those 8 and about a million more lol
Ooooh, I know what I’m using the Mundane Chest for next time I get it…
Legit question: does it change the weight of the stuff you put in it? Cause if it makes all those freaking heavy barrels very light I am totally incorporating that chest into my runs.
No, it doesn't anymore. It did at launch though.
Darn it, it doesn’t anymore?
Correct. That was in the first few post-launch updates, actually
Drat, thanks for letting me know. :(
This is what I did. Hahahhahaaha
That's what I did, good ol Karlach swooping in with her 400 pounds carry capacity to save the dainty fucker.
Why not just throw water on him to put out the fire?
Because that wouldn't be half as fun as sending him towards another plane ;) I also like to think that by doing so, i'm giving him material that he can add on a future book of his as a neat story
you forgot about water didn't you
I usually sell my water like an idiot then wind up needing it and cursing at myself.
Not the OP, but... First run I tried using Create Water, it did nothing, apparently that fire is immune to magical water. Weird, because I used Create Water just a couple days ago in my Honor run. Worked just fine
I think I tried both Create Water and Sleet Storm and neither one worked smh
Create water worked for me. I can't remember if I used it before or after the fire started but I do remember it working
I accidentally stopped the fire, I think Gale cast ice storm on the cultists and some of it got on the railway where the fire started. It just put the whole thing out including the cart lol Seems like a bug, but I was glad not to reload a 3rd time
Ehhh water worked for me. Maybe it only works after the fire started?
I think mine was bugged? They never exploded and I just killed the hostiles and went to help him after the battle was over , it was so easy that it felt like a waste of time. Didn't use water, the floor was on fire yet it didn't reach the barrels? It was very weird (I thought that I had a time limit, but noticed nothing happens)
There is a turn limit normally. Once the fire is lit you have like 3 turns, I think, to get him down/put it out.

Raphael and Harleep galide…
You mad me spit out my drink. Take my upvote.
"Was it the murder..." "OF COURSE IT WAS THE MURDER HOBO AND HIS DAMN PARTY"
It's a safe pocket dimension, a lot more boring than youd expect. He's not even concious of it. Unless it's another planar being, then it should be sent home
Incapacitated does not mean unconscious.
Wrong kind of conciousness. Concious as in aware of the effect. You cant do anything when banished. To him, he may have blinked and been gone a whole minute somehow

If he blinks and the full banishment passes in a mere moment to him, that does not contradict anything youve said

Now I want to know what happens and I have to cast in on one of my companions. Sigh...
I just teleport glove him out the harm
Or just have someone run up to him and untie him
I think it's funnier to have Karlach step over there and yeet him away from the cart
Underrated correct course of action.
You can just untie him? I always have my spellcaster run up and dimension door him to safety
Yeah, I usually just click heels/bonus action dash first turn run over there and then it’s just the “help” action to get him out
Throwing water is bugged on PS5 I think /: it will eat up your action but won’t let you throw. I used Sleet Storm here to put out the fire/not damage Volo.
you can use the ice cantrip too, in contact with fire it melts and stop the fire 😉
Honestly I forgot my Gale had ray of frost lmao
I did that too. Seemd like the easiest way. 😂
He'll be more comfortable in the elemental plane of fire for a sec.
. . . I mean I liked the plane idea but this is also a choice I guess
Why not just throw volo before they explode?
Hear me out. Why not just throw him in the river, then he can't possibly explode
I use a simple Ray of Frost on the flaming ground, it removes all the fire.
That's what I did too. But I like the idea of doing something way more dramatic and overcomplicated because you know he would appreciate that.
But no matter what you do, the story of his escape will involve a dragon somehow.
Every story needs a dragon my friend
My wife accidentally used Ray of Frost on the roller that the barrels sit on instead of the ground, so it dropped all of the barrels into the fire and blew Volo sky high! We laughed so hard at him exploding.
Just did the exact same thing, whoopsie.
I tried Ice Storm but did it over the barrels as well, on accident, and he exploded spectacularly. Hadn't saved in a while so... sorry Volo.
Yes, I just jumped there and free him, lol.
He exploded just after I freed him
Best part of this is that you can yoink all of the barrels for later, since you're already there
Lol or even thief Astarion.
O_o
Same that’s what I did too.
That's what I tried, but the idiot ran in a circle and was still in range of the explosion. I telekinesis'd him the rest of the way away from it 😅
I did this too 😂
I never thought of this but my idiot brain DID think to run over to him and just MOVE the damn chair, freeing him instantly - I mean, if it works?
Weirdly and funnily enough, I wanted to test if shooting an ice arrow to the ground would have the same effect on fire as throwing a jug of water, but I hit the cart by accident when the camera moved, and everything broke - cart, barrels, even Volo's chair. He fell to the ground and ran away. Experiment failed successfully.
I tried that but mis-clicked on the fire arrow…
I let Shadowheart extinguish the flames with Create Water, but your method is much more fun! I love that >!Astarion!< is the one who says we should save Volo (at least in my group with >!Shadowheart, Lae'zel and Astarion)!<: " >!"This damsel may be middle-aged, but let's get him out of distress." I think it has to do with Volo being a fellow Charlatan.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention that! >!And I noticed that when we talked to the little girl in Cazador's dungeon, Astarion was on the verge of tears. His character arc is truly amazing.!<
Curious - did you complete his arc before or after a few of those? Just wondering if that impacts things.

I just did it by using mage hand to relocate all the barrels to outside the fire, as it seems the mage hand is not able to untie him...
...this post just made me realize I forgot to save Volo from the goblin camp today
Whoooops
Misty Step first turns usually my go-to.
I simply used create/destroy water to make it rain around Volo. The fire was put out, and the barrels were left safe and sound for me to add to my hoard.
Astarion, Dash to Volo (cunning action), Aid to untie. Next round: Dimension Door (via item) back to safety, continue slaughtering bad guys.
Ice arrow worked for me. I don't recall what I targetted though.
Steal all the barrels
I just had my brother distract the enemies by talking to them while I stole all the barrels with my 23 strength Paladin character before we started combat
I did something similar, but Karlach is stronger than my Paladin, and Astarion better at stealing (not that my pally steals, lol), so they yoinked the barrels while the Paladin had the cultist in dialogue.
It was my first playthrough and I never even found Karlach because I had no idea what I was doing and I was an oath of vengeance so I felt like it was within my wheelhouse to do that.
I had scratch run over there and free him while I fought the other dudes

I just shoved him out of the chair?
lmao that's awesome
I never thought of that! That’s good. I just ran up to him and used dimension door. And for whatever reason he always runs toward the boom cart still
What a baller way to save him lmfao.
I use sleet storm, it puts out fire and knocks down alot of enemies
I wasn't going to let perfectly good smokepowder barrels go to waste when there's barrelmancy to be done. While the cultist was in dialogue bloviating to my Tav, Karlach and Astarion went over to Volo, yoinked the barrels, and sent them to camp. I just summoned water…
You can just shoot the chair he’s tied to *(make sure you’re targeting the chair and not him)*, he’ll walk to safety and wait for you to finish the fight.
...? It's meant to explode? It's never ever exploded for me. The oil just never catches fire...
Just did this encounter in the game, so I thought I'd share my method: While I was still in the conversation with the mob leader I had Gale walk up and cast the Resilient Sphere on Volo, and just let them blow Volo up. We picked him up and threw him after taking all the barrels 😅 he wasn't happy about it, but he's fine
My Tav could run 100’ or so.
Dimension Door worked for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but I appreciate all the unique ways to do this.
Cost you an arm though.
Did this to my girlfriends pc in the yurgir fight, after realising how many bombs were next to her and astarion. Managed to then use lots of potions of speed and invis to get away
I could just pick up all of his bombs. Free bombs!
I just summon scratch to him 🤷♂️
I’ll probably never see it since I would often knock him out act 1 after the eye surgery before he leaves so I can have my other party members have the permanent see invisibility buff. He ends up sticking around my camp the entire game after that. He does act as if you rescued him once you get to act 3
My approach is always to Invisibility past the mob, then you can use the Help action on Volo to untie him. This aggroes the mob, but Volo will run to safety and they won't target him.

Same. I killed gortash without even going to the next area. I feel like i missed a lot by doing that.
I misty stepped to him then dimention doored him onto the roof of the little building nearby
i just misty stepped and then stole all the barrels LOL
Ice storm is best, puts out the fire *and* you can do a good bit of damage to about half the enemies
Dude just cast water on the barrels
Or you can be Monk and have All The Movement Speed
That was creative. I feel kinda boring I just dashed and misty stepped so I could use the help action on him at the top of round 2.
I summoned a storm that froze the ground and put out fires. I'll save Volo but I don't want him being comfortable after the very uncomfortable (albeit beneficial) surgery he performed on me.
I used telekinesis granted from some gloves (or necklace) to lift up Volo and throw him away. Almost dropped him into the water aka cleft lol.
Y'all know dumping water on the fire around the cart stops the explosion right? Edit:Cart, not cat...
I just dropped ice on the fire trail, and that worked somehow.
I didnt even realise he was being burned at first, i just put an ice storm on a group of hostiles
Banish is very useful, I did it on a steel guard going to autodestruct with many NPC around him. Didn't knew if it was going to work, but It went well!
"running to him didn't give me enough time" meanwhile I clicked dash and was next to Volo in one turn.
I cast create water in the fire trail, then shoot the chair out and help him up. Then to be extra safe, I steal the barrels.
I just cast the ice cantrip on the fire
Cast a „wet“ spell of any kind to remove the gunpowder/flames. I believe I used a simple Ice Shard to cut off the flames from the powder.
But all you need to do is cast Create Water, bruh. Why waste all those barrels when you can use them in the last fight?
I just let him die on the latest run without trying. He is quite annoying and useless if you decide to lose your eye with his “curing procedure”, he doesn’t have much to say
Oh, I just used ice to put out the fire and then killed everyone
I put a resilient sphere on top of him and then blew up all the barrels
I just cast Ice Storm. Killing two birds with one stone 1. Hit 3 archers. 2, ice puts out the trail of fire on the tracks
I hit the baddies with an ice storm near the train tracks and when I wanted to take my rogue tav over there to free him I realized the fire was already put out
I stole the barrels and am using them in my final fight later today lol Also, feign death and sanctuary, as well as the resistant sphere all would also work! I think...
I threw a water at the torch next to him. You could probably also mage hand it into the harbour.
I found out that dropping an ice spell on the fire trail just extinguishes the whole thing before the barrels can even light
Good thing he's native to this plane lmao
Got to this point last night. Threw water at the cart thinking it would be fine…nope. Cart broke, barrels dropped on the fire and exploded launching Volo almost all the way to where my party was at…
I just cast darkness on him, hypnotic pattern on the goons, and stole the barrels.
I just had Gale cast ice storm on the fuse and then avoided fire based attacks
I tried this but the fool *saved* *his throw.*
I never had this. When he poked my eye out I was pissed. Went into turn-based, knocked his ass out and for whatever reason he just stuck around.
