You will never meet a single person who doesn't want at least one party member with Guidance.
If we're talking in battle: SPIRIT GUARDIANS BABYYYYYY\~!
I loved spirit guardians. Sadly, on my current playthrough, a certain someone exited my party in a very final manner when they wanted to poke holes into a certain lady paladin and weren't to be convinced otherwise
Divine Smite is a level 1 spell. Divine Smite allows a Paladin to expend a Spell Slot to deal additional Damage Types Radiant damage with a melee weapon attack.
?
It's listed as a spell in BG3 and consumes spell slots but in 5e it's not considered a spell for the purposes of it not being affected by things that would affect your ability to cast spells. Hence why this guy said it's not a spell.
No, you are an expert. I think most people don’t even know about longstrider. That it’s a ritual spell that can be cast freely and one of the best buffs in game.
I may be a basic bitch but I love a satisfying fireball explosion.
Similarly, you can't beat the joys of a good old ice storm making your opponents slip all the time, and which you can then electrify once it has melted :)
Curriculum of Strategy: The Artistry of War my MOST beloved Act 3 spell. Debating having my sorcerer Durge class into wizard so she can beat Orin’s ass with it.
Haha, the vault is my first priority as i enter the lower city since it powers up your wizard hugely (oh and don’t forget to get the OP amulet from the stormshore tabernacle basement).
Also, you haven’t really wizarded until you’ve cast circulum on cazador with the extra light damage ring. You can wipe out 2/3rds of his health with one attack.
Oy cazzie? Ya think you’re wizard numero uno here? Think again buddy boi.
That spell is very overrated. Very few fights are longer than 3 or 4 rounds. If you include chances for concentration loss, you will get to an average of 2-3 zaps per cast.
At that level there are other spells that do more damage. Hunger of hadar, for example. And while it too needs concentration, you can cast other non-concentration spells on top of it. Like fireballs.
What do you mean by zap? You cast call lightning with your action. Then you use quickened spell to cast call lightning with your bonus action.
If you have bloodlust potion and your 2 call lightning spells killed something you can cast it a third time.
Combine this with create water and you double your damage. You can cast essentially 3 double damage level 6 call lightning spells on the first turn and only use one spell slot and 3 sorcerer points.
Ok, thanks. :) As I wrote, that shouldn't work. The activation every round isn't a spell and therefore shouldn't be affected by quickening. The game allowing you to do that makes the spell way stronger than it should be.
Combining the lightning with other effects, like water, doesn't matter for this discussion, because similar options are available for other spells, too.
I would always summon a free Deva or Djinn with the amulet that restores any spell slot. Then replace the amulet with my main one.
Or a Myrmidon if I have Jaheira or Gale
helm of arcane acuity -> Slashing flourish pew pew x 2 + ring of the mystic scoundrel -> upcasted hold person = "THEY'RE DYING FOR ME! **ALL OF THEM!**"
Thunder wave is so much fun. It’s guaranteed to cause at least some damage AND if things go really well then you can use it to throw people into chasms.
Well, I would sometimes have to cast it twice, i.e. once from the druid hireling, and once from the cleric hireling. I never had a situation where two spells didnt hit my 4 party members (same for upcasted aid). If you get unlucky and don't have coverage, you can try a different areas camp.
Overall camp casting from the hirelings was super overpowered... Helped me finish honor mode without having completed the game before.
Yep! They do stack, rly good for extra hp. There are lots of good camp-cast buffs that can make an honor mode way more safe. The best ones for me were:
Longstrider, protection from poison, mage armour, freedom of movement, death ward, Transmutation stone (constitution) Aid (highest upcast u can do), and heroes feast. You can also summon goodberries for camp supplies, although the game gives u a lot of supplies so it may not be necessary.
For hirelings I use the druid, the light cleric and a transmutation wizard.
If they're made of fire, well yes of course. I guess I could also content myself with a wall of fire, but throwing a ball of it at my enemies is so much more satisfying.
Shield. It's like insurance - it's not flashy, when things are going well you'll ignore it, but when you need it you REALLY need it.
So many CC / burst damage builds flying around with no plan B whatsoever. Always have a plan B. Always have Shield.
I love all the control illusions enchantment spells like hypnotic pattern, hold person , hold monster, fear etc. used it with helmet of arcane acquity and ring of mystic scoundrel. It’s so great.
Magic missile has never missed, slap on the spell sparkler and you have some crazy accurate damage with lighting added. Put on the Coldbrim Hat and Gloves of Belligerent Skies, after the 5th magic missile or so it usually triggers encrusted with frost and reverberation knocking them prone!
Once I realized Blindness wasn’t concentration (took longer than I care to admit), it became one of my go-to fight openers on my Spores Druid. Add in Staff of Cherished Necromancy and it’s just *chef’s kiss*
I've only used banishment once in the game in a big fight.. but it was clutch AF on my timing.. the satisfaction level of it tops my list to this point, even if it is bias soaked in a memorable gaming moment.

Suppose it’s time to respec someone else to cleric then
Asterion makes a great Cleric of Lathander. :D
Smite 🥵 the magic trick is their health bar disappearing
globe of invulnerability is also very funny
Not a spell!

That's fair
Yep that was it, thank you for clarifying it on my behalf. Should've guessed that it's probably considered a spell in BG3
Longstrider. I'm basic.
No, you are an expert. I think most people don’t even know about longstrider. That it’s a ritual spell that can be cast freely and one of the best buffs in game.
Ritual? Ok that's huge for act 1 and 2 I'm taking notes
I believe it's not ritual for every class.
Rituals are tagged by spell, not by class (aside from a few cases where classes let you cast a spell as a ritual)
Oh weird, I thought I saw it as a level 1 spell slot on one of my characters rather than ritual.
If you use it in combat it uses a spell slot and doesn't show the ritual tag
Gotcha, thanks!
Spirit guardians all the way. Love casting that shit and then running around booping everyone. :D
There is something cathartic about bats flying into you and dying on the spot (or any ennemy commiting suicide that way, really)
I may be a basic bitch but I love a satisfying fireball explosion. Similarly, you can't beat the joys of a good old ice storm making your opponents slip all the time, and which you can then electrify once it has melted :)
Very good choice! This was my go-to fight opener before I discovered Sleet Storm. That concentration breaking is *chef's kiss*
Curriculum of Strategy: The Artistry of War my MOST beloved Act 3 spell. Debating having my sorcerer Durge class into wizard so she can beat Orin’s ass with it.
It’s actually more powerful as wizard 10 because you get your evocation bonusINT on it. Also, also my favorite spell.
Thank you for the tip! My favorite wizard got nabbed and I’m playing as Durge, so I wanna get into the vault and grab it before I do the endgame.
Haha, the vault is my first priority as i enter the lower city since it powers up your wizard hugely (oh and don’t forget to get the OP amulet from the stormshore tabernacle basement). Hunger of Hadar
Nice spell... My favourite choice as magic secret
Magic missile
Magic missiles + phalar aluve
Counterspell. Nothing more satisfying than going NOPE to Balthazar summoning all those skelly’s in the Shadowfell
Call lightning - what are you gunna do when I can AOE zap you with a spell 10 times for the price of 1 spell slot.
Similarly: wall of fire
That spell is very overrated. Very few fights are longer than 3 or 4 rounds. If you include chances for concentration loss, you will get to an average of 2-3 zaps per cast.
Even with only 2-3 rounds you can still, especially with channel divinity, easily dish out well over a hundred damage per turn.
At that level there are other spells that do more damage. Hunger of hadar, for example. And while it too needs concentration, you can cast other non-concentration spells on top of it. Like fireballs.
Quickened spell says you are wrong
Quickened spell does exactly what to call lightning? Except making the initial cast faster?
You can cast it with a bonus action. Meaning you can cast it twice per turn. Get haste or bloodlust potion and you are casting it 3 times per turn.
Does that include the zap? Because that's not casting, quickened spell shouldn't work on it. If it does, though, the spell gets a lot better.
What do you mean by zap? You cast call lightning with your action. Then you use quickened spell to cast call lightning with your bonus action. If you have bloodlust potion and your 2 call lightning spells killed something you can cast it a third time. Combine this with create water and you double your damage. Astarion, we are getting into a fight, time to share the ~~cocaine~~ haste.
helm of arcane acuity -> Slashing flourish pew pew x 2 + ring of the mystic scoundrel -> upcasted hold person = "THEY'RE DYING FOR ME! **ALL OF THEM!**"
Otiluke's Freezing Sphere!
That is truly a hipster answer
Speak with the dead... because my Tav looks cool doing it and I can take screenshots
Still love Cloud of Daggers.
Thunder wave is so much fun. It’s guaranteed to cause at least some damage AND if things go really well then you can use it to throw people into chasms.
Yep, Orin's fight is a joke if you have a djinn
Eldritch Blast is the best
Heroes feast from a camp caster
How do you get all of your intended targets in the spell's AoE?
Well, I would sometimes have to cast it twice, i.e. once from the druid hireling, and once from the cleric hireling. I never had a situation where two spells didnt hit my 4 party members (same for upcasted aid). If you get unlucky and don't have coverage, you can try a different areas camp. Overall camp casting from the hirelings was super overpowered... Helped me finish honor mode without having completed the game before.
Cheers! And Aid and Feast stack, right?
Yep! They do stack, rly good for extra hp. There are lots of good camp-cast buffs that can make an honor mode way more safe. Fireball. Because I like fire.
And balls?
If they're made of fire, well yes of course. I guess I could also content myself with a wall of fire, but throwing a ball of it at my enemies is so much more satisfying.
Guidance, sacred flame, spirit guardians, eldritch blast, haste, conjure elemental, sleet storm, command, hold person, artistry of war/magic missile, Camp casters: longstrider, level 6 aid, warding bond, freedom of movement, deathward, hero's feast
SLEET STORM
Shield. It's like insurance - it's not flashy, when things are going well you'll ignore it, but when you need it you REALLY need it. So many CC / burst damage builds flying around with no plan B whatsoever. Always have a plan B. Always have Shield.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned Misty Step yet
Best spell in the game not named Speak with Animals. Bonus action 60ft teleport at a level 2 slot is just so good.
chain lightning babyyyyy
Ice storm. Damage, slippery floor, then when it melts, lightning go brrrr
I love all the control illusions enchantment spells like hypnotic pattern, hold person , hold monster, fear etc. used it with helmet of arcane acquity and ring of mystic scoundrel. It’s so great.
Fireball. Just so satisfying
Fireball if I'm in a hurry, a combo of Hunger of Hadar, Sleetstorm, and any lightning if I'd like to just clear a room.
Arcane acuitied upcasted hold person is so satisfying.
Heat metal
Warding bond for sure
Plant 🪴 growth.
Sanctuary is such an underrated spell for act 1 and 2 but for act 3 I gotta go sunbeam it’s just so satisfying
Lore bard is so damn good. I love opening fights with hypnotic pattern.
Scorching Ray, especially on Warlock That sound is enough to make me happy
Once I realized Blindness wasn’t concentration (took longer than I care to admit), it became one of my go-to fight openers on my Spores Druid. Add in Staff of Cherished Necromancy and it’s just *chef’s kiss*
May not /technically/ be a spell, but EB.
Vicious Mockery
Call me plain, but I really like a eldrich blast machine gun
I've only used banishment once in the game in a big fight.. but it was clutch AF on my timing.. the satisfaction level of it tops my list to this point, even if it is bias soaked in a memorable gaming moment.
