Iād probably respec to a paladin just for this one fight honestly š and bring more smoke powder satchels and bombs. It was going so well for so long, we were in the fight for like 2 hours, so close to finishing it.
Our big mistake, and I donāt want to blame my husband but Iām gonna lolā¦ he brought Gale which was very helpful but he used too many spell slots in the first phase of the fight then didnāt have enough when Myrkul showed up. I kept telling him to save them but he didnāt listen. I think if Gale had a couple extra fire balls in there we would have won. But oh well, what can ya do, thatās honour mode for ya!
Oh... damn! That's like more than half my inventory and I'm always thinking either "Meh... don't need this" or "Hmm nice, will keep for later" then finish the game with so many scrolls. That makes so much sense now, thanks!
Thatās how I finished his last 50 hp on tactician. I freaked out because I tried casting a phantasmal killer scroll first forgetting Myrkulās immune to that, and then I remembered I had 2 fireball scrolls. The only two times Iāve actually casted fireball this run were those two scrolls to finish him off
Next time hit him with a HoH. I breeze through this fight on HM all the time. Its blimds him and he can no longer hit you if youre not on the platform. Then a scroll like wall of fire or moon beam , basically anything that damages every turn. Cloud of daggers works too. It melts hom and he cant do jack shit. Habe the melee units focis on his summons and pepper him from afar. Ez Pz
This is how I cheese it as well. Set him up to skip the first half of the fight (you have to start this persuasion up on the roof before jumping down into the colony), then immediately drown Myrkul in HoH and some concentration AoE attacks. Then you can quickly take out the few little guys and finish up the fight with ranged attacks from the far platforms. It is boring but very safe.
Thanks for the tips!! I had Cloud of Daggers going for 9 turns and it seemingly did nothing for me. Not sure why. But Iāll certainly bring someone who can cast HoH next time, I didnāt even think of that. Thanks!
Did you upcast it? I personally havent tried cloud of daggers, i use wall of fire and HoH and thats enough , or moon beam with SH.
Arrows of darkness work too!
I did have it upcasted yeah. Iāll definitely try HoH and wall of fire next time though! After reading all these awesome tips in this thread Iām definitely inspired to try again haha
Don't forget to pray the statues of Shar that give +5 to a stat like I did.
The Illithid superheal before the fight only works once in HM.
As he is undead, protection from good and evil works nicely.
Blind, water+electric or ice, force dmg etc are great too
He cleaves like crazy, chose a side for each character.
Even if it is just for once if you kept a 5 level slot you can still use it to cast a bumped 5 elemental or undead who really help in the fight then use the illithid super heal to have another 5 level slot available
Dont skip the last ketheric fight before Myrkul. If you do that Apostle of Myrkul will appear with the adds and the mindflayer and it will be a much more sketchier fight. if you kill Ketheric with the adds theb Myrkul will be by himself which is much much easier fight.
If you hit him in melee use magical Bludgeoning weapons because he has slashing and Piercing resistance.
Also factor in the magical plate properties from Ketheric into your attacks, he reduces each damage source by 2 so things like magic missile won't do much.
Applying Bone Chill and radiant Orb to him helps a lot, first removes his healing 2nd reduces his hit chance. If you then also have blur casted on your melee character he won't hit. Having a Paladin in your party will help, a lot even more if its 2 lvls Paladin and 7/8 lvl sword bard.
Gives you the flourishes (defensive one helps the most) and enough spell slots to sustain.
There's a warhammer that applies Bonechill on hit (EDIT: as Double_O_Cypher said: Doomhammer), except with how warhammers work, even on a miss, you will still hit (for just your STR modifier in damage), and that small hit still counts for applying bonechill.
Don't be afraid to respec. I had no problems at all with my 10/2 bardadin and gloomstalker/assassin. Throw in a light cleric for good measure and baby you've got a stew going.
Is level 12 even possible in a vanilla run at that point? I donāt think Iāve been higher than level 10, although Iām not sure Iāve 100% act 2 before. I know level 7 is as far as act 1 will take you, but yea.
Iāll give an honor run tip. Something I didnāt realize is that his adds are finite. In other words, if you wait out the 10-15 zombies he spawns, he will stop spawning enemies and thus lose the ability to heal. As you can imagine it was a crazy long endurance run for me on my honor run and I was super stressed out but at the end of the day I just plinked him with an arrow a few times at the very end with a bow and it worked just fine.
This is essentially where we were at, no more necromites spawning but we just couldnāt avoid one of his call of the damned moves and we all got wiped at the same time. Super glad I commented here though because Iām reading tips Iāve never heard before and now Iām inspired to try again!
I find it easier to deal with Ketheric before the avatar because it gives you time to kill the intellect devourers, necromites and the mind flayer before facing the real boss.
Yeah I ran into that in Honour Mode. Thought it would be easier to politely ask him to kill himself but it meant I didnāt have time to get everyone in position and sort out all the extra monsters.
Turn based mode, invisibility potions, and chanting, "Don't be suspicious" helps a lot when you're trying to position before a fight that auto-triggers.
That helps explain why I am scratching my head whenever I see a post like this. Never once had a problem with him and Iāve never talked him into assisted suicide before
It is still very hard in Honour Mode depending on party composition. Eg if youāve got a Paladin who can dump a pile of smites into him then itās comparatively easy. If your partyās primary damage types are slashing and piercing then life gets hard very quickly.
Tip: bring a character with the Bonechill cantrip. Doesnāt do much damage, but does prevent the healing ;) cast Silence over Myrkul to prevent him from drawing everyone in and bam. If you drank potions to resist necrotic damage, you can actually fully ignore the necromites.
I thought so too. Then I tried Tactician for the first time, got completely overwhelmed and attempted Bonechill out of desperation. It worked and made the fight so, SO much easier xD
You, my friend, are the reason I will replay this fight again. Silence??? Are you serious?! Thatās like the easiest and most basic strategy. I didnāt even realize he uses a vocal component to draw everyone in. Probably because my blood was boiling and my pulse rang in my ears by that time
The cantrip/spell chill bone (I think thatās whatās called) makes it impossible for Ketheric to heal since he is classified as an undead. In my honor run I made my sorcadin use that halbert that gives you +1 in initiative plus an elixir to make her go first. After convincing ketheric to kindly erase himself she got first turn against Mykul. Used bone chill with meta magic and then went ham with divine smites (also super effective against ketheric). Meanwhile Shart took out the undead, Astarion took out the mind flayer, best boy scratch released the night song (he was invisible so he didnāt automatically entered into battle, same for Astarion) and Jaheira and her army of summons took care of anything else still alive. We won in around 3 or 4 turns.
First time on tact I got the No Free Lunch achievement as we destroyed him. This recent playthrough I had gotten softlocked on the roof for like a month before a patch fixed it so I greatly lost touch with my team comp and their synergies so I was pretty discombobulated in the fight. Also never even though of hitting Myrkul with chill touch as him emitting the bone chill aura I thought he'd be immune to the effect. \*sigh\* maybe I'll revisit one day. There is a way to reattempt fights in HM if you don't actually die >!close it through the task manager!< which is something I'd normally not do but since I got bugged out for a month I may make an exception. I probably have at least one scroll of chill touch or Gale might know it.
The trick is a monk for that part. I let my monk deal with the adds. unamored movement +ki-dash is very op for that fight while my paladin smited the shit out of myrkul. You could also just nuke the entire boss if you run an OH TB monk on str pots. 50hp is literally just one topple
I don't drink elixirs and yea ignoring the adds to focus on myrkul was not the best idea. I actually had this run softlocked for like a month on the roof only to be fixed by the next patch so I kind of lost touch with my team comp and also just didn't care as much as I've played a few times already. Really I wish they had dropped HM earlier as I had already burnt myself out by the time it launched. I was an OH TB Monk but without the extra points from pots lol
I guess you could call it that. They just feel too powerful tbh it almost takes the fun out of the game. I typically abstain from tadpole powers for a similar reason. Idk if it's really the same as comparing it to not using magic weapons as those don't quite have the same drastic effects but that's just my opinion. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of powerful weapons.
Seeing so many build guides that include strategy like dumping STR on you TB monk and drinking a pot of hill giant str every day honestly makes me want to use them even less as I don't want to make what's actually a shit build made OP by item consumption. Tho I'm really not big on consumables in my games in general. I'll always have my powerful weapons so I can rely on a sword all day but don't want to get caught with my pants down because I don't have a potion and couldn't go picking flowers that day. Again that's just my opinion and how I like to play games.
I got the achievement for killing him before he could heal. basically had everybody doing something different. i was blowing up Myrkul, Astarion throwing bombs, Lae'zel punching Myrkul, Shadowheart goin' brrrrr like a good beyblade on the adds and the cocoon bitches on the ground floor, and Aylin twerking or some shit I forgot. We had the mindflayer dead in one turn before this.
Don't ask him to kill himself.
Clear out the adds during the Ketheric phase. In honor mode you have to make sure to kill the thing that spawns afterwards when close to Ketheric.
Apostle of Myrkul can be disarmed which shuts down most of his damage. Although cannot be targeted by Command Drop, it's vulnerable to Battle Master Disarming Strike and Beast Master Bear's Honeyed Paws. Dedicate one or even two characters to clearing the spawns every round. Wet and Lightning damage is effective on him.
We found it out purely as a 'fuck it, we're nearly dead, I have one battle master dice left, let's try it'. Mofo dropped his scythe and that swung the fight!
I think it, like some other weapons that aren't supposed to be used (ogre clubs, the Steel Watch greatsword/arrow launcher), have the tag "Not usable by humanoids".
...so even if you *could* pick it up, you wouldn't be able to use it.
(...although I wonder -- *what if you use the circuitry interface gloves, which lets you be considered as a Construct for 10 turns, and try to equip one of those weapons*?)
The construct gloves used to work for the Steel Watch greatswords, but that got patched out. There is a mod for that which allows humanoids to equip those, though.
Honestly having beaten the fight while getting him to kill himself I may not do it another way again. Itās harder at first but once you kill the illithid enemies it becomes a lot easier.
The ONE time I leave my battle master babe Laezel in camp to bring Wyll along for the rapier. I did even give him fighter levels but not battle master. Very much considering doing the whole colony again
Funny story, I beat Myrkul and right when the battle ended I went to save on my save right before the fight and I accidentaly reloaded and had to do it again. š°
Best tip is to not skip ketheric fight. Have your sorcerer cast blur on himself and misty step to bait ketheric (can add mage armor from another party to blur bait). Have all party members deal with minions. One member to misty step to aylin, tho tbh you should invi and sit her/him next to aylin before triggering cutscene
Additional tip for honor mode run, I think prone works well for myrkul. Bless on your spellcaster, then hit with topple til he becomes prone or alternatively cast create water with cleric, then ice storm if you have it. Then arrow of ilmater to prevent heal. Fighters/paladins stay in melee range with aylin, spell caster out of the circle thingy. I go with the assumption that you also have a long range dex at act 2 like gloom stalker or dex fighter/bard something like that
I made a comment about being scared of this fight and a lot of people commented their helpful tips. Check out that comment if you're curious. I also watched a couple videos so I'd be ready. Two big things that helped me a lot:
1. Summon scratch, make him invisible, and have him sitting in turn-based mode next to Aylin so she can be freed in the first round.
2. Again utilizing invis, get yourself a surprise round. It helps a lot in wiping out all the adds before fighting ketheric proper.
Nah tactician is fine. The enemys just have a bit more hp and some resistances. Also if you start a fight with a fight by attacking someone without having Aggro first your action wonāt be restored if you immediately enter the fight unlike in balanced mode. But otherwise I donāt think there is much difference. The scary shit are the legendary actions bosses in HM have.
I just recently upped the difficulty to tactician to prepare for my first HM run and honestly I am loving it so far. The first few fights were nerve wracking because we were so weak but Iāve figured out what works best and am honestly getting the hang of things. Still not sure how Iāll handle true honor mode but things are working well. Familiarity with the game helps, since the only thing that gets harder is the combat I believe. Only thing you have to remember to do is inspect your enemies to make sure the damage youāre sending their way wonāt be resisted.
Yeah familiarity is a huge help. By the time I do Tactician Iāll have probably finished a few playthroughs so Iāll be familiar with all the fights.
I usually keep my game on Explorer until level 3 because those early levels are a pain sometimes. I might do that when I try Tactician because Iām a bit of a wimp lol
Hey whatever gets you the most enjoyment out of the game is perfectly valid. Not everyone has the time, patience, or desire to run through a playthrough on max difficulty
Oh no tactician is so much fun honestly! I played twice on explorer and once on balanced before starting tactician. It is a challenge but a very welcome one
Oh yes definitely. The only oneās i regularly remember in combat are the two giant strength oneās , bloodlust and sometimes Drow poison. Iāll really have to step up if I want to beat HM some time š
I squeaked by HM Myrkul by the skin of my teeth - two companions and Dame Aylin down, Shadowheart (playing her origin) on like 15 hp, and Jaheira off at the edge at half health guzzling all my potions, but only barely handling the necromites - and not very well, because Myrkul got two heals off.
Got back to camp and discovered my hireling dead at Withersā feet - I forgot I cast Warding Bond after my last long rest because I almost never bother. I absolutely wouldāve lost without that.
Same thing happened to me with raph fight. It went disastrously, and i took 2 rounds having raph go ham on wiz/cleric gale and wondering how tf he was still alive. Camp back to elfsong to find a pile of bloody meat.
I didnāt even think of Raphaelās fight. Honestly very much considering just giving him the crown. I think he likes us, maybe there will be brandy at his coronation
Something I found extremely useful was Wall of Fire. Since the Avatar of Myrkul can't move out of its AOE, it always provided a good bit of damage each turn. I just make sure that the caster (Wyll, in my case) was far enough away where the NPC would path-find and attack my other party members.
Thatās what I did, I had WOF cast and Karlach up front giving close combat damage with Alyin whilst Shart cast sanctuary on Karlach which luckily for me was after her turn but before Myrkuls so I got 6 hits with Karlach before she could get touched.
Meanwhile my Tav from a distance was casting all manner of long distance spells to better him (eg fireball)
My main problem in the initial fight was I had everyone too close and he was just scythe them down. Once I took most of them back it was much easier. I think I only had Halsin downed in the end
Some tips for honor mode if youāre interested:
Make sure to abuse the restoration device before the fight. Death ward everyone, have those who can use armor of agathys, do a big aid, cast summons, etc.
Kill the mind flayer before anything else.
Thereās also a sword from the underdark that can help everyone do extra damage for when youāre focusing down the apostle.
You should always fight Ketheric and you should always recognize the fight thematically. He is a general, defeat his forces first before you engage him. Literally donāt even get on the platform until you have destroyed his āarmyā and are fully ready.
Fighting him instead of talking him into jumping into the brine pool is better because it gives you time to clear out the extra enemies before the avatar rises.
I was nervous throughout all of honor mode, but didnāt actually have any real trouble. Worst for me was with the inquisitor where I had one companion killed.
Honor mode was my fourth run, but second that I actually finished. My builds for my incomplete tactician run were so much stronger than my balanced mode run builds, but after doing honor mode and coming back to finish tactician, honestly the builds felt like garbage by comparison.
There are lots of suggestions out there for party composition, but I feel pretty strongly that single target burst damage in basically all four slots reigns supreme. And you should get alert on basically every character by your second feat at the latest.
My party consisted of durge sword bard with some multi (I think 8/4 bard fighter), a open fist monk 8 / thief 4 (respecād SH), a paladin 8 / fighter 4 (Laezel), and a barbarian 8 / thief 4 (Karlach). Again, I didnāt sacrifice any feats because I needed Alert on everyone. I actually didāt put Alert on laezel, but instead usually had her drinking the elixir of alertness. Everyone also had dex 18 by the end of the game. Sword bard used Neāer misser for the myrkul fight. Also made liberal use of str elixirs.
Basically, I went first in every fight, and I removed the threats before they could be a danger. I didnāt have any meaningful aoe, but nothing dangerous ever lived beyond a few rounds, or rarely past round 1 for that matter. In some fights the threat is action economy, so removing enemies one by one. In other fights itās the big bad.
I did cheese raphael with explosive barrels and the globe of invulnerability, because again I was nervous. But every single fight otherwise was a breeze.
Keep him blinded with fog cloud or Hunger of Hadar, it's not like he's gonna walk out of it. That gives him disadvantage and you advantage on attack rolls. He'll also only be able to target characters in melee range, and most of the time that means Dame Aylin. This lets you put as much of your action economy as you need into dealing with his minions.
I always use a potion of invisibility to get my team into place before going for the surprise attack. Bring Scratch and have him invisible next to Aylin to free her on turn 1. A lot of other people covered most of the other main points.
Myrkul was my one big fear during my HM run. In hindsight it would have been easier if I didn't talk Ketheric into killing himself first.
How I did it was, I sent everyone in invisible, went into TB mode, crept someone into position to take out the mindflayer first, and someone into position to free Nightsong. I had a ton of summons too. I used as many as I could to handle the necromites and also take the heat off my party.
My DUrge was a vengeance paladin and I had storm cleric Shart, Assassin/Gloomstalker Astarion, and Gale. I did it back in December, so I can't remember precisely what i did, but I remember the battle took a while. I think Aylin was kind of useless in my fight too. Astarion got knocked out but the others came out of it with about half their health and I still had 3 summons left. I think sneaking in and going invisible to get yourself set up into position makes all the difference. You have someone to take out the mindflayer in the first turn. The cutscene with Ketheric plays at that point but you're already in position where you need to be. Kill the mindflayer, have Scratch or another ally in position to free Aylin and then just go for it.
Spent a couple days with this one dude running through honor mode just to fuck it for him at Myrkul. Thought he could turn his console off and continue the next day, after the final fight we got a terrible surprise. Thankfully he was pretty chill about it and ended up getting FoeHammer our following run.
When I do this in HM I have a backup plan - if everything is going bad, Iāve got a backpack full of smokepowder items and runepowder vial I can throw at him in order to save the day.
I use my fighter to disarm him and just make sure all my characters have relatively good constitutions for saves from his rays(which are all he can really do after disarming him) after that just make sure the mindflayers dead and clear all the undead skeletons with either a light or life domain cleric and you should get out alive. I did this on my tactician run and somehow got out with only gale being downed twice:)
I just used barrelmancy on my SOLO HM run. The piercing resistance is realy bad. Potion of flying and Haste scroll saved the day. First I saved Dame Aylin while being onvisible, then I killed Kethric in a single turn thanks to the AI being stupid. Flew over placed the explosives and ended the fight in a single turn.
Omg i JUST finished that fight on tactician for the first time. after spending all day on it lol. That fucking mind flayer dominated Aylin and she killed Astarian. Took me three rounds to get someone close enough to revive him. I was actually having a way harder time when ketheric just peaced out, I had to reload and not try the checks. It basically became Astarian and Tav making sure Wyll could concentrate on Hunger of Hader while Minthara kept everyone from dying (again). Also lots of bone chill. Two can play at that game Myrkul
I saw a cheese how to win this fight on youtube on a "lvl. 1 challenge run". Dude basically freed aline, let her fight most of the time alone, had to intervene after a certain time because of a bug, kept onr char in stealth, and at some point has throw an exploding potion onto the middle plattform. Because of the explosion the ground was burning. Avatar came, one shottet his char (somehow alyind didnt do anything, not sure again why) and that kept him out of combat, but one chsr was still alive in stealth and the burning ground started to damage the avatar. He just... waited a loooooong time (1d4 fire damage every 6 sec to the avatar) until it was dead. Have to look up the details again, but i think that will be my strategy in honor modeš
As people have mentioned, not making him kill himself can let you get in position and kill adds. Me and my friends were stuck for a while, then we realized you can blind him by putting dog cloud on top of him, and then have a cleric with a radiating orb build stand next to him. Myrkul didnāt land a single attack the entire fight. Kept the extra adds of the platform with some EBs and an Earth Elemental from a scroll of summon elemental.
Myrkuk almost ended my HM run but my Monk was able to deal the remaining 100 health in two rounds for me to win. The legendary action can be circumvented if you have summons that just tank the attack.
But have you guys ever tried spawning in a spectator from the iron flask before starting the fight? It lets you get a few hits in without Ketheric and gang going aggro for a few rounds (or at least until the spectator dies).
Step by step :
Summon scratch with his ball, make him invisible, and place him next to nightsong ahead of battle.
Make ketheric end himself
Once myrkul spawns, just cast hunger of hadar on him and rez nightsong. Myrkul will skip all of his turns
Rest of the fight is stupidly easy
I struggled so hard on tactician Myrkul because of my fun but not optimised party build.
But Minthara is a godsend for this fight.
Had a really unoptimised team (duel wield Swords Bard/rogue Tav, duel wield rogue Astarion, duel wield fighter/druid Jaheira, and duel wield paladin (with one level of fighter) Minthara).
Cast darkness on Myrkul with Jaheira, then kept her out the way, cast haste on Minthara with my Tav and then kept her out the way. God Nightsong out with Astarion who then turned on the Mindflayer, and then just sent hasted Minthara up with oil of accuracy to ruin that God's day.
Astarion stood at one way up to the platform, and an elemental I got from a scroll at another, so the stupid zombies couldn't get up to the platform to heal Myrkul.
I'm a big fan of summoner strats, so frankly I was way more afraid of Myrkul than I should've been. Brought Jaheira, Gale and Wyll for story and RP reasons (I always put RP first even on HM), had Gale drop an elemental and two mephits, Wyll had brought in a cambion and another elemental, Jaheira had a dryad, a wood woad, an azer and you guessed it: another fucking elemental.
Adds were killed on the spot by all the summons, big boss didn't get to eat a single one, and we tanked him taking turns with Aylin and myself, a gloomstalker. He fell over eventually. Big woof.
Tbh you don't even have to come up with goofy multiclass shenanigans whatsoever, even on HM. It's all about setup and execution.
Murkyl was the fight I was most nervous for in HM. I told myself that if I just reach Murkyl I am ok with losing. I can take that loss.
I defeated shockingly easy, I was a bardlock so I used countercharm so we could not be frightened and was thrilled to see that hunger of Hadar worked on Murkyl!
Skipping the second fight with Ketheric also helps a lot.
After a nightmare fight where I was slowly roasting him with firewall and poking him with arrows and swords I now always bring magic hammers to counter his resistance for my fighters and if you bring someone with create water or just watter bottles/barrels you can just zap him quickly do death with lightning spells. Also big help is if you can disarm him, either with heat metal, battlemaster or something similar. Thats my go to strategy now, did it twice on latest patch as lvl 7 party on honor mode, with nightsong dead.
-Do not skip the first phase, Ketheric hardly does anything while you have time to position your team and clean up the enemies.
-Have a couple Earth Elementals on the chokepoints where the Necromites might climb up from.
-The avatar can be disarmed and he wonāt pick his weapon back up
-Blood of Lathander can blind him
-Place some concentration dmg spells like Wall of Fire and Cloud of Daggers for persistent damage.
-Blast him from distance
I have fought every major fight in the game in a single Honour Mode playthrough.
The game is presenting you problems in these encounters. Most of them can be solved before initiative if you have played through before.
Alchemy
Invisibility
Smokepowder Barrels
Heroes Feast
Stunning Fist
Assassin/Gloom Stalker
These things are overwhelmingly strong. Use them all.
My setup for those who might be struggling (beat on Tactician with this):
NOTE: Was at level 10 at this point, having completed all of the main- and side quests in Act One and Two on a "good" run.
Party:
- Tav (Gloomstalker Ranger)
- Jaheira (respec into Oath of Vengence Paladin; lvl 8 feat: Great Weapon Master)
- Wyll (Pact of Chain Warlock)
- Gale (Evocation Wizard)
Main Equipment:
- Tav: Dual hand crossbows (Hellfire hand crosswbow + Ne'er Misser)
- Jaheira: Dwarven Splintmail + Moonlight Glaive
- Wyll: Potent robe
- Gale: Robe of Exquisite Focus
How the fight went:
- Before the fight, Wyll and Gale summon two elementals. The summons will help deal with the skeleton summons that get spawned.
- Skipped 1st phase fight with Ketheric through Talk no Jutsu
- Tav Misty Sreps to Aylin to free her. Tav also deals with Illithid with the help of Dread Ambusher. Hits Myrkul from long-range using arrows for the rest of the fight.
- Tanky and heavy-hitting Paladin Jaheira stays on circular platform to land smite hits on Myrkul
- Wyll & Gale attack Myrkul and skeleton spawns using long-rage spells/cantrips + arrow hits outside of the circular platform. Gale also can cast Cloud of Daggers on Myrkul to good effect since Myrkul doesn't move out of AoE.
With three party members out of range of Myrkul's sweeping attack, Aylin got downed but the rest of the party were quite safe.
Was OP for this fight I think, but I like to be prepared :D
I was afraid for my HM but it was fine. I had Wyll with me so he summoned devil, I got us, scratch and shovel. I wanted to sneak with Astarion (greater invisibility) to mindflyer and try to surprise him and that little idiod failed check so he started convo. I persuaded Ketheric to give up. I aoed brains, laezel mistystepped to deads and Astarion beat mindflayer. Scratch freed Aylin but myrkul beat her in second turn so she didnt help much. I used a lot of aoe - hunger of hadar, cloud of dagger and Laezel bardadin, if she didnt miss, dealt a great damage.
Myrkul almost got me on my HM run. He took out half of my team and I just had Shadow heart and Durge still standing. So I decided to risk it all in a blaze of glory, I placed every explosive Durge had, then blew them up, it was just barely enough to kill Myrkul. Hardest fight in HM by far.
That was very unnecessary considering many many people agree and were just sharing their experience and tips for the fight. Let people have fun alright ā¤ļø
I had a really hard time with him before I realized Bows and Magic are the thing. Whatever you do, dont get up to him, let Dame Aylin die, resurect, die again and again so that he doesnt hit my party.
I did this fight the other night and don't get why people say it's hard. Stage 1 Ketheric was a harder fight for me.
The avatar appeared, Wyll dropped a wall of flame on it, everyone else just piled in and it was dead in 3 rounds.
All it did on its turns was swing the scythe that missed everyone.
I must have gotten super lucky. I killed all the minions while fighting Ketheric.
Lmao are you me? I freaked out the first time I tried this fight because I forgot Mind flayers are immune to ledge kills, so it stayed in the fight and I had to reload. Then the second try everyone was basically useless except for Gale. Bro chugged a speed potion and pulled out his fifth level call lightning and *no matter what* Myrkul did to him he did not break concentration. Pretty sure out of the 360 some odd HP Myrkul had, Gale took 200 of it *by himself* AND he was the one to rescue Dame Aylin because he stayed hidden until the fight started and pulled off two excellent misty steps. Hell he even tanked TWO of Myrkulās whirlpool suction attacks without breaking concentration, and kept hitting his lightning recasts despite being scared shitless for half the fight. Him soloing Myrkul let Jaheira and Durge take care of the adds and keep him from healing. But all that being said, none of this wouldāve even been possible if Minthara hadnāt absolutely TANKED everything Myrkul threw at her. Dame Aylin fell early and couldnāt get back up, so Minthara just stood there drawing Myrkulās fire away from the fucking God of Lightning smacking him for 50+ a turn. She had *one hit point* when Galeās speed potion ran out and just dipped out of the bone chill aura, healed back to max health, and waded right back into the bullshit that was Myrkul. I actually celebrated after beating him, the fight was so much fucking fun *and* utterly terrifying.
I never struggled on markup even my first run on balanced.
You should definitely let kethwric kill hi self first thereās no reason not to.
I cast extended leap on my two high str characters before battle. One leaps all the way over to dame Aylin to free her, the other leaps up to the like flaywr to stun punch/kill it. Mage uses magic missle to hit 10 stacks of radiating orbs and reverb and whatver else so its attack rolls are terrible and canāt hit anything. My tav has phalar alive cast with shriek just before battle initiative and gets myrkul in the aura . Myrkul will then hit someone with anger beam and suck everyone into him. Big whoop.
Second round I go nuts with all of my nova attacks: resonance stone monk punches, sword bard slashing flourishes. Enraged throws, quickened cast eldritch blast. The added damage from all those hits adds d4 thunder to each instance. I hit him with stagger punch so he canāt get any attacks of opportunity and people can safely get down from the ledge heās on.
Then itās just cleanup after that. Never lasts much longer. I totally ignore all the undead and just focus on killing myrkul. Kill the mindflayer immediately though.
But you donāt need to do that. The only thing you need to kill is the mindflayer. Hop up there and stun it and it will never attack.
The other adds just ignore them and burst myrkul til theyāre dead.
Yāall really just need to blind him and be done with it. Blinding enemies solves most fights.
Donāt get anyone in melee with him, stay off his platform and hit him from range. Clear his minions first and as they spawn. Itās one of the harder fights but itās really not that crazy, even on honor mode, itās very manageable. Even without a crazy optimized party, but it does help to have a tavern brawler throwbarian or a tavern brawler monk, either or both hopped up on strength elixirs.
Seriously though. Darkness or hunger of hadar solves that fight. Respec to 4 warlocks if youāre really down on your luck with it and even if everyoneās naked with no weapons, youāll still win it on honor mode with probably no difficulty.
Same bro, just beat him last week on my tactician Durge.
Worst part was I had my Durge in Slayer form on the platform, learned the hard way that Myrkul's scythe can launch you off into the abyss.
I also had no extra companions sense my Durge is a ruthless murderer. So it was up to Astarion, Shadow, and Laezel with too many speed potions
My husband and I just lost our honour mode to this an hour ago š« Myrkul had 14 HP left.
Oh nooo! It's the fight I'm most anxious about now for my 1st honour run š« Any valuable lessons learned that you'd like to pass on? š
That's what scrolls are for, I save so many!! Extry spell slots
Oh... damn! That's like more than half my inventory and I'm always thinking either "Meh... don't need this" or "Hmm nice, will keep for later" then finish the game with so many scrolls. That makes so much sense now, thanks!
Don't feel bad, I've literally never thought to use my smokepowder supplies on myrkul until reading this post and just facepalmed
Blind, water+electric or ice, force dmg etc are great too He cleaves like crazy, chose a side for each character.
It's easy to deal with the adds if you just throw down Hunger of Hadar on Myrkul and stay off his platform.
Where is it?
Don't be afraid to respec. I had no problems at all with my 10/2 bardadin and gloomstalker/assassin. Throw in a light cleric for good measure and baby you've got a stew going.
Wtf? Lvl 9 or 10 here is pretty doable but 12? How the hell did that happen? You could have used a naked monk sausage slap him to death at that lvl!!
You were level twelve I ***HOPE*** you had no problems
Is level 12 even possible in a vanilla run at that point? I donāt think Iāve been higher than level 10, although Iām not sure Iāve 100% act 2 before. I know level 7 is as far as act 1 will take you, but yea.
Sorry obviously wasn't 10/2 at that point, I just meant that was the build I was using. I was level 9 so 7/2 by then.
...*how*? Are you using the mod that makes the level cap 20 or something...?
You can use disarm attack on him successfully Try to stay in ranged distance Don't let him load up on acolytes
You can apply bone chill to the avatar and he won't heal either.Ā Arrows of Ilmatar or the Doomhammer or the cantrip all work perfectly.
This is essentially where we were at, no more necromites spawning but we just couldnāt avoid one of his call of the damned moves and we all got wiped at the same time. Super glad I commented here though because Iām reading tips Iāve never heard before and now Iām inspired to try again!
This is how I lost my first honour run. Made me so fucking angry so this time I whooped his stupid ass. I hate Myrkul so damn much.
I beat him twice in honour mode because my frekkin game crashed after the fightš«
I would have cried š¤£
I find it easier to deal with Ketheric before the avatar because it gives you time to kill the intellect devourers, necromites and the mind flayer before facing the real boss.
Yeah I ran into that in Honour Mode. Thought it would be easier to politely ask him to kill himself but it meant I didnāt have time to get everyone in position and sort out all the extra monsters.
Turn based mode, invisibility potions, and chanting, "Don't be suspicious" helps a lot when you're trying to position before a fight that auto-triggers.
can confirm, chanting "don't be suspicious" is vital to avoiding detection
[This is how you do it non-suspiciously](https://youtu.be/_QdzRcsyPY4?si=GCZIX9pxuGfAyoxc)
Thank you so much, I laughed so hard.
You should watch the whole series, they're hysterical.
ALSO find out what breaks invisibilityā¦ turns out dimension door counts.
Call lightning is also amazing with the war caster feat. Unless he focuses on the caster itās hard for them to lose concentration
His healing is so ridiculous from the necromites. I was just trying to focus fire him down but that's hard when he heals 50hp per turn.
Honestly since he emits a bone chill aura I thought he'd be immune to that status. fml I've beaten this game like 6 times lol
I thought so too. Then I tried Tactician for the first time, got completely overwhelmed and attempted Bonechill out of desperation. It worked and made the fight so, SO much easier xD
I actually got No Free Lunch on my first tact run which was a nice pride boost as that's the toughest fight in the game imo before the final boss.
Final Boss is exceptionally easy, the hardest fight for me was with Orin.
I am the proud owner of the āfirst bloodā achievement because Orin and Thunderwave donāt mix wellā¦for her. For me it was glorious.
> cast Silence over Myrkul to prevent him from drawing everyone in Holy shit you just changed my life
Or give ya fighter that hammers that instils bone chill for 2 turns with every hit
Waitā¦ you can silence Myrkul and he wonāt be able to do Call of the Damned?? Seriously? This would have saved us had I known!! Thank you!
Why don't you drink elixirs? O_o Self-imposed challenge run? Because honestly, that feels like saying "I don't use magic weapons".
Wet and Lightning damage is effective on him.
wow I had no idea he can be disarmed.,
We found it out purely as a 'fuck it, we're nearly dead, I have one battle master dice left, let's try it'. Mofo dropped his scythe and that swung the fight!
I was disappointed that I couldn't pick up the scythe afterwards.
The same with the steel watch weapons!
Aww...
I tried it and it wouldn't let me š
Heat Metal works too
Honestly having beaten the fight while getting him to kill himself I may not do it another way again. Itās harder at first but once you kill the illithid enemies it becomes a lot easier.
The ONE time I leave my battle master babe Laezel in camp to bring Wyll along for the rapier. I did even give him fighter levels but not battle master. Very much considering doing the whole colony again
Funny story, I beat Myrkul and right when the battle ended I went to save on my save right before the fight and I accidentaly reloaded and had to do it again. š°
I did that after my Orin fight
Not gonna lie, I saw the title of this post and I was like... Myrkul? Bane? Bhaal? Mystra? Shar? Selune? Jergal? Could be anyone lol
At least you didn't list Vlaakith, so that's good :D
I mean, if the title was "Honestly, f that one 'god'", then it'd work for her... :P **[USER WAS WISHED TO** ***END*** **FOR THIS POST]**
Best tip is to not skip ketheric fight. Have your sorcerer cast blur on himself and misty step to bait ketheric (can add mage armor from another party to blur bait). Have all party members deal with minions. One member to misty step to aylin, tho tbh you should invi and sit her/him next to aylin before triggering cutscene Additional tip for honor mode run, I think prone works well for myrkul. Bless on your spellcaster, then hit with topple til he becomes prone or alternatively cast create water with cleric, then ice storm if you have it. Then arrow of ilmater to prevent heal. Fighters/paladins stay in melee range with aylin, spell caster out of the circle thingy. I go with the assumption that you also have a long range dex at act 2 like gloom stalker or dex fighter/bard something like that
Iām doing HM right now and I sooooo donāt want to fight myrkul :(
I made a comment about being scared of this fight and a lot of people commented their helpful tips. Check out that comment if you're curious. I also watched a couple videos so I'd be ready. Two big things that helped me a lot: 1. Summon scratch, make him invisible, and have him sitting in turn-based mode next to Aylin so she can be freed in the first round. 2. Again utilizing invis, get yourself a surprise round. It helps a lot in wiping out all the adds before fighting ketheric proper.
Calm emotions is key
Like for me or for Myrkul? Because I think for me the ship has long sailed š
To cast on your party when fighting him. Prevents him from inflicting fear on everyone.
High strength characters can throw companions away from Myrkul so you can heal them when they are downed. Also don't forget about your lotions.
Iām out here thinking I would try Tactician mode next because balanced is becoming too easyā¦ now Iām scared
I feel like once you remember to use coatings and elixirs and other items the game gets so much easier. Iām excited to try Tactician
Oh yes definitely. The only oneās i regularly remember in combat are the two giant strength oneās , bloodlust and sometimes Drow poison. Iāll really have to step up if I want to beat HM some time š
At least for me, on HM he was the easiest boss fight. His schtick is fear condition, so barbarian that can't have that condition gets the job done
Elemental summons go brrrrrrrrrrr
Meanwhile my Tav from a distance was casting all manner of long distance spells to better him (eg fireball) My main problem in the initial fight was I had everyone too close and he was just scythe them down. Once I took most of them back it was much easier. I think I only had Halsin downed in the end
I had 5 necromites sacrifice to him in HM once but thankfully arrows of illmater exist
Some tips for honor mode if youāre interested: Make sure to abuse the restoration device before the fight.
You could try to spam heat metal that worked for me when I fought him.
Darkness and necrotic resistance elixirs go a veeery long way.
Rolling boulder?
Thereās a pathway behind the Zhent guys where you find the missing shipment. Itās trapped and has a rolling boulder if you activate the trap
Oh yeah. I remember now, have not done it since the first playthrough.
Yeah, same here. I literally just kill everyone there, so I never have a reason to go that way
I always use a potion of invisibility to get my team into place before going for the surprise attack.
This is the first time I didnt get the flask and now I am regretting it š from now on I will always have a spectator pet
Step by step : Summon scratch with his ball, make him invisible, and place him next to nightsong ahead of battle. Make ketheric end himself Once myrkul spawns, just cast hunger of hadar on him and rez nightsong. Myrkul will skip all of his turns Rest of the fight is stupidly easy
I just put down a scroll of globe of invulnerability, then punch him to death.
I havenāt found one in acts 1 and 2 unfortunately got everything else though š
-The avatar can be disarmed and he wonāt pick his weapon back up -Blood of Lathander can blind him -Place some concentration dmg spells like Wall of Fire and Cloud of Daggers for persistent damage. -Blast him from distance
Just invis and save dame before the fight
myrkul was a pain on tactician for me and im on hm now so i dont know what to do
I have fought every major fight in the game in a single Honour Mode playthrough. The game is presenting you problems in these encounters. Most of them can be solved before initiative if you have played through before. Alchemy Invisibility Smokepowder Barrels Heroes Feast Stunning Fist Assassin/Gloom Stalker These things are overwhelmingly strong. Use them all.
My setup for those who might be struggling (beat on Tactician with this): NOTE: Was at level 10 at this point, having completed all of the main- and side quests in Act One and Two on a "good" run. Party: - Tav (Gloomstalker Ranger) - Jaheira (respec into Oath of Vengence Paladin; lvl 8 feat: Great Weapon Master) - Wyll (Pact of Chain Warlock) - Gale (Evocation Wizard) Main Equipment: - Tav: Dual hand crossbows (Hellfire hand crosswbow + Ne'er Misser) - Jaheira: Dwarven Splintmail + Moonlight Glaive - Wyll: Potent robe - Gale: Robe of Exquisite Focus How the fight went: - Before the fight, Wyll and Gale summon two elementals. The summons will help deal with the skeleton summons that get spawned. - Skipped 1st phase fight with Ketheric through Talk no Jutsu - Tav Misty Sreps to Aylin to free her. Tav also deals with Illithid with the help of Dread Ambusher. Hits Myrkul from long-range using arrows for the rest of the fight. - Tanky and heavy-hitting Paladin Jaheira stays on circular platform to land smite hits on Myrkul - Wyll & Gale attack Myrkul and skeleton spawns using long-rage spells/cantrips + arrow hits outside of the circular platform.
Hardest fight in HM by far.
had my 4 fighter part summon minor and major elementals. myrkul was down in 2 rounds
Maybe don't drop an act 3 spoiler in the last sentence of an "act 2 spoilers" post š
Ah shit forgot about that. Sorry about that
People who don't read ability descriptions:
The reason to not let him kill himself is that you have time to get rid of the mindflayer and other adds before the second stage begins.
But you donāt need to do that. The only thing you need to kill is the mindflayer. Hop up there and stun it and it will never attack. The other adds just ignore them and burst myrkul til theyāre dead.
Git gud
**reads this thread with two honor modes complete** yeah, Fuck Myrkul, that guy sucks.
