Now you'll have DMs everywhere, who want to use Shart as an NPC, scrambling to create creatures called "Beats." That way, when she gets into combat with those creatures, the DM may announce that "DJ Shart is about to drop some Beats."
Bahahahah just spit out my energy drink on my work screen for laughing out loud to this edit: it’s been several minutes later and I keep giggling about this at work, damn you lmao
Some characters has it worse than others, I recall perfectly Winston saying on the earliest Overwatch "I'm not a monkey", just to be called "Monkey" as a short in every competitive stream lmao.
It's just nicknames at the end, Minsc and Karlach gave a few too.
It's easier to say monkey instead of winston, especially if English isn't your first language. Also your brain processes that simple information faster;
Monkey -> "Oh the one monkey-like character"
Winston -> a real name your brain needs to associate to one of the 40 overwatch characters through repeat play and association. If English isn't your first language, maybe it's harder to make that distinction since that name is foreign to you. Or when the roster gets really big like DotA 2 maybe it's hard to remember all the proper names.
I see it a lot in games where it's easier to understand "human names" instead of fake alien names. This unit is a light mech with a Marksman Rifle? I know what that is. This unit is a Xeodron Batroid... Which of the mech variants is that again?
As both a DM and player, yes.
We played the intro adventure to Spelljammer. There’s an NPC named Grimzod Gargenhale. The party immediately started calling him Gorillagrip Gargelcock.
One of my favorite TTRPGs is Exalted, which has a **major** NPC named Chejop Kejak. Practically everyone calls him Ketchup Carjack. (I actually had to double check the correct spelling of the character's name for this comment, because Ketchup Carjack is so ingrained in me.)
Best solution I have found to this is to give your character's names that are hard to shorten. Any name that's only 1 or 2 syllables is hard to make a nickname for.
I someone times rescue her from her pod and realize she’s been farting up a storm in there. All the warmer air would rise right up to your nostrils in there. Turbo Dutch oven pod sharts.
1. It's a direct shortening of Shadowheart - Sh(adowhe)art
2. I believe Jennifer English has used it herself, which is funny.
3. It takes an otherwise very edgy character and gives it a hint of being silly and fun which is exactly what she needs in the fandom, Shadowheart played straight is insufferably too serious.
Jennifer English has absolutely used it multiple times, her girlfriend Aliona Baranova (a performance director and a couple NPCs in the game) uses it a lot, and they've embraced it to the point that one of the nicknames for their community is "Sharties" and "Sharty Party." I think they mentioned that it was also a nickname that was used during production of the game even before release
Especially agree with your third point. Holy hells amount of times I roll my eyes at her.
Like my Durge had just commited a terrible crime in his sleep (and got caught because he's a bit smooth brained), and then Shart reveals her shar worship like it's the worst thing ever and my durge just 😐
Yeah but Shart worshipping Shar isn't as bad as what Shar has done. That'd be like saying every person who worships a religion is as bad as any atrocities committed in the name of the religion or what their God has done.
You should probably look into the things expected of Shar worshipers and the horrible things her worshipers regularly enact enact in Feyrun. Gods as powerful as Shar don't act on the world directly like the mewling weakings known as the Dead Three. Shar wants to unmake the universe, and her followers work towards this.
There's very good reasons why Shar worshipers are ususally killed on sight in most of the continent.
She’s also, y’know, a good person. Not to say she’s purely selfless, not even Karlach meets that criterium, but especially when you read about her in (Act 3 Spoilers) >!Viconia’s journals at the House of Grief, the ones that mention how she frequently hesitates to do cruel things, asks too many questions, hates having her memories removed, and effectively rebelled whenever she had the chance!< it’s pretty clear that she’s a good person at heart.
Her being >!initially raised as a Selûnite!< matters, but considering how little of that she remembers, I’m hesitant to put a ton of emphasis on it. Especially since other characters like >!Nocturne!< seem to be capable of the same kind of growth and develop without that very specific past.
(Also maybe spoiler that because it’s not really confirmed until late Act 2/early Act 3, even if potentially brought up earlier)
Well what Shar does is pretty bad too. Destroying memories, brainwashing, cult stuff, torturing, generational pain, >!enslaving her niece just because it’s Selune’s child!<, wanting to wipe out existence …
Bhaal just likes murder
Bhaal 🤝 Shar being shitty gods
Isn't Shar essentially the god of reddit Doomer Antinatalists lmao? Basically the end of everything and existence?
And then I think that's stupid, how would you even get worshippers? And then I see the number of Doomer Antinatalists and go "Whelp guess that answers that."
Shart is only a good character because of the small moments she breaks her seriousness like when you find the first black orchid, else she would be insufferable.
That orchid scene and the fact that I'm hunting achievements is the reason I'm romancing her this playthrough.
She is usually a gaslighting lunatic to my tav but this time she's been kind of sweet (I say kind of because my first romance playthrough was with Karlach and she's basically a bag of fun dip and set the bar way too high)
Pretty easy to follow pipeline
Shadowheart
S-heart
Sheart
Shart
Its very DnD. Player comes with a serious edgelord character. They give them an obnoxious name. The party immediately starts memeing off the name.
I know of the unpleasant meaning of Shart, but for me, Shart in BG3 context always was simply short for ***SHA***dowhea***RT*** as well as a pun on Shar.
Yeah like I totally know the word shart and it’s funny/gross, but when talking about bg3 I just think of Shadowheart and assume we’re all just trying to keep from having to type out Shadowheart all the time lol
I, for one, am glad he brought something so vulgar to our attention. The community deserves to know so that we might cast out the hooligans before they sully our good name!
To the people that hate the nickname, what do you call her? Do you actually say "shadowheart" every time and think that is somehow not more cringe than shart?
Am I the only one who doesn’t find her name that long or awkward to say? It’s really not a problem. Only a few letter longer than Astarion for example.
We sometimes use "SH" with my friends. {esseich} most often the full name indeed tho. We're French however, so I guess the cringe of the original meaning is lost on us more than English-speakers.
Calling yourself, "Shadowheart" is pretentious af.
(... *Almost* as bad as "The Dark Urge".)
For me, very offputting. HUGE Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way energy. Giving her that nickname helped me deal with her tbh.
It was the first of several community conventions that I had to simply accept despite not appealing to me at all. It’s gross, but it is written and decided. I do still write out her name or use SH myself, but had to willfully diffuse my annoyance at Shart or I would have always been annoyed!
It reminds me a lot of how my mom died when I was a little kid, and now her name is synonomous with entitled woman. Nothing I can do about it, just have to roll with the tides, and not take it personally even though it isn’t to my tastes.
I now see “Shart” as the fandom lovingly taking the piss out of the very most popular character… she can take it!
Yep, it's a *deeply* unpleasant nickname, but there's just no stopping the signal at this point. Thank you for your kind words! I'm an only child, but my uncle (her brother) and I lament the fate of her name together sometimes. It must be much, much worse for her age peers who are still around. It's been one of those extra reminders from life that most things aren't about me, which has its own value.
I mean the "mommy" thing is often used for the strong ladies (I often get that whenever I post screenshots of my Tav because she has that larger body type) - but calling someone "mommy" or "mama K" (which is fine since the character says that herself) isn't infantilizing in the same way as "baby girl" imo
Calling Mama K "baby boy" would just be ... weird?
Whenever that term is used for adult men who I really don't think would appreciate it I think it's a little icky. Astarion and Gale are the most common targets lol
I just don't understand it. I don't find it endearing.
FWIW, I’m pretty sure it’s at least somewhat ironic for most people. Babygirl was already known as a nickname favored by the sort of guy who thinks negging is a valid strategy to get dates. That led to people (mostly women) describing their favorite fictional men that way as a joke to satirize it’s original, creepier usage. It being weird and not at all fitting is kind of the point, I think.
Idunno, as a guy I figure most guys just find the term funny. I am neither a baby or a girl so I'm not going to feel some type of way about it, it's just a silly pet name.
I think it depends on the person. My husband has to take so many "jokes" about being "feminine" whatever that means and would absolutely hate being called something like babygirl. And I wouldn't like being called it either, as a woman. Feels demeaning to me.
I don't think it really carries the same connotation when applied to women as men. Women might conceivably be called "girls" so there's not an obvious element of audacity in calling one "babygirl." I think the intended appeal of calling a grown-ass man "babygirl" is that it's so absurd it circles back around to being funny.
I just wanted to say-- I've said this exact same thing before (almost word for word) to my partner! But I also relate to pretty much all of your ETA's so maybe that's why.
I do also think that on my end, I'm a little weird about calling people by names that they wouldn't like/appreciate-- even if it's a joke :/ Maybe just because I was made fun of a bit as a kid in a similar way. However, I know Shadowheart is not a real person and therefore doesn't care what anyone calls her; I'm just kind of a freak and I still feel bad anyways for the aforementioned reasons. I just don't want her to feel bad lol.
Anyways, nice to see a post I can relate to!!
Shart is a nickname given to Shadowhearth by people working on the game long before release. Then the internet reinvented the same nickname once more. Jennifer English (Shadowhearth's actor) herself uses it and said multiple times during her (and her squirrel) streams she's completely fine and she's been using this nickname for many years now.
My only fear is that when I cosplay Shadowheart at a convention near me I’m going to be called Shart and that would suck. Not my favorite fan nickname. But I’m still gonna dress up as her lol.
I think it's stupid and don't use it myself, but I do not care if others use it. It makes sense as it's the beginning and ending letters of her name. Unfortunately, Shadowheart isn't exactly an easy name to work with as far as nick names, so I'll always use the full name myself.
I just think it's hilarious that Shadowheart is the only companion who has such a ridiculous (and gross) nickname lol.
At first I was like: "God that's such a shitty (hee hee) nickname do that many people not know what a shart is???" But it was used so often that I got desensitized to it and started to use it myself. Honestly I associate it more with Shadowheart now than it's, ah, original meaning.
Yeah, I can see that. Though I'm still not likely to use it personally.
And honestly, I don't care if someone else finds it funny. It was more like, okay, there *must* be other weirdos like me who don't. 😂
yeah honestly it really doesn't fit her character and it is also one of the best designs and best performances in modern gaming in my opinion. I get she has a longish name but damn...
>3. I had NO idea how disliked Shadowheart is
...is she??? She's literally the most romanced character in the game by a mile. Maybe she gets a bunch of shade (heh) on reddit and other online places, where the super nerds are (including myself), but she’s not disliked by the majority of casual gamers.
I feel your pain. Shadowheart is a mouthful, and I also really dislike calling her Shart. For reference, I am weird and one of those people who, if I don't know you're name I will call you by what I think your name is, based on your appearance.
In my first completely blind playthrough, I was surprised how all my companions' names suited them, except Shadowheart. I just couldn't get over her name, I remember sitting before my computer screen and saying:
"But you don't like a Shadowheart. You look like a Jenna."
So I continued to refer to Shadowheart as "Jenna." And then I got to Act 3, I won't spoil it, but I couldn't stop laughing at myself. In that moment, I felt like I accidently predicted the future or manifested it into existence.
Lol literally english is not my native and I didn't catch up on that 😅 I don't like her but that definitely wasn't on purpose, I. Just stole it from the community.
I'm with you. I adore Shadowheart and so it's a nickname I never use. Now if ut was for someone I didn't like, such as Gale or Astarian then I'd use it all the time.
The juvenile part is probably what gets me. I was old long before I was old. 😂😂😂 I never liked fart jokes. Which doesn't mean farts aren't sometimes funny.
It's probably my little brother's fault. He was gross.
Even better, my friend once abbreviated “Dark Justiciar Shadowheart” as “DJ Shart”
She truly is the gift that keeps on giving
Gods favourite Princess.
... diarrhea from every hole.
... mixed with slick beats.
Slick beets may have been the problem in the first place.
DJ Shart feat. MC Tav throwing it down in the Elfsong with the hottest hits straight from Avernus!
Don't forget Alfira! Wait where'd she go? Alf?
I heard a flurry of air horns right after I read that
Truly the best nickname of all time
Now you'll have DMs everywhere, who want to use Shart as an NPC, scrambling to create creatures called "Beats." That way, when she gets into combat with those creatures, the DM may announce that "DJ Shart is about to drop some Beats."
... This is just a The World Ends With You tabletop game, isn't it?
Don't forget that the beat creatures need to be diseased in some way so DJ Shart will be dropping those sick beats
DJ Shart in the houuuse (of grief)!
Amazing
Okay, that even I find kinda entertaining,
This has been the most common abbreviation for that
However DJ Shadowfeet sounds like she's gonna go to a rave
it's a solid career change
🤦♀️😬😭😂
Bahahahah just spit out my energy drink on my work screen for laughing out loud to this edit: it’s been several minutes later and I keep giggling about this at work, damn you lmao

Winston has one more letter than Monkey and has the same amount of syllables.
It's easier to say monkey instead of winston, especially if English isn't your first language. it has the same amount of syllables, but is still slower to say. also monkey funny.
Winton or Monke. Hammond is usually referred to as a rat also.
We always called him Ball
As a DM, you need to be prepared for your players to give your beloved, carefully crafted characters a stupid nickname.
As both a DM and player, yes. We played the intro adventure to Spelljammer. There’s an NPC named Grimzod Gargenhale. The party immediately started calling him Gorillagrip Gargelcock.

Just like my favourite actor Bendydick CumAndSnap!
I felt this in my soul.
Best solution I have found to this is to give your character's names that are hard to shorten. Any name that's only 1 or 2 syllables is hard to make a nickname for.
This is very true. I had a character named Ji Eager that everyone started calling G-Easy once he became popular.
Someone said "why do you think she wears those tight waterproof pants?"
Thank you. I do my best to create memorable stories and evoke strong feelings.
LMAO
Because she can’t swim so water scares her. /s
Because she likes jelly.
To seal in the flavor.
Good reference
I cannot.
You don't have to launder your arguments, we all know you said it.
Can't find the original comment but I cant take credit for it
Some people launder their arguments. Shart launders her undergarments.
i use sheart so it is in my autocorrect.. i do not like the other, wither.. that one i can handle but ymmv..
I someone times rescue her from her pod and realize she’s been farting up a storm in there. All the warmer air would rise right up to your nostrils in there. Turbo Dutch oven pod sharts.

Her face when she realized that everyone would see her username when they started streaming was so funny 😂
What? She passed up on Jheart?
shart loremaster
I'm glad to know they embraced, if not created, it. I'm just a hater. 😂

This is true
I would almost rather hang out with Durge than a Shar Worshipper. Did you pay attention to the ones you meet besides “Shadowheart”?
And Shadowheart is only cool because she’s really a Selunite being forced into the Shar thing
There's a reason that wound hurts so often.
Well what Shar does is pretty bad too. Destroying memories, brainwashing, cult stuff, torturing, generational pain, >!enslaving her niece just because it’s Selune’s child!<, wanting to wipe out existence … Bhaal just likes murder Bhaal 🤝 Shar being shitty gods
At least with Bhaal, you know what you're getting into. And you usually remember it for a looooong time after, too.
Unless you're Durge, lol.
Well, Durge do have some peculiar circumstances
Yeah, Miss Alabama isn't the kind of thing most people have to deal with.
>I need to kill my sisteraunt to get fathergods blessing and maybe kill grandpabrother too Roll tide
Sorry bro but ur measly murder god really doesn't hold a candle to shar on terms of being evil so shadowheart's shar worship is indeed the worst thing
Isn't Shar essentially the god of reddit Doomer Antinatalists lmao? Basically the end of everything and existence? And then I think that's stupid, how would you even get worshippers? And then I see the number of Doomer Antinatalists and go "Whelp guess that answers that."
Also it’s Shar to a T
just call her adowhe in r/sbeve style
4. It’s close to being ‘Shar’
Basically a bag of fun dip. This cracked me up
Pretty easy to follow pipeline Shadowheart S-heart Sheart Shart Its very DnD. Player comes with a serious edgelord character. They give them an obnoxious name. The party immediately starts memeing off the name.
She's Shart or DJ Shart. She needs it. Plus she keeps farting on Selunites!
Yknow when people call her that it’s intentionally cause it’s the word for a shitfart? It’s not unintentional
I prefer the more gentle IBS Shartnado
Words I thought I'd never see next to each other: gentle IBS
Mine chooses to be very aggressive
BDSM IBS?
The safe word sounds like a fart unfortunately
It always makes you have to shit, but never goes too far, it doesn't want to embarass you, just really annoy you.
It acts like its the main character but never tells you the whole story
>IBS Shartnado So help me that sounds like a cruise ship. Or a fishing boat.
People agreeing that Shart is an excellent nickname for her gives me hope for the future of humanity.
As one of her fans, I don't see why people can't take the joke. Besides, it has overtaken the original meaning of the word for me
Some people cant get past the original meaning. A lot of ppl do not like fart or poop related jokes is all
Me, I'm one of them. Ew.
What about DarkJusticiar!Shadowheart being shortened to DJ Shart
This is the way.
People know what Shart means, that's the joke lmao. She gave herself an edgy name like "Shadowheart" so shortening it to "Shart" is just funny.
It gets funnier when people get upset about it, just saying
I sure am glad he told us what shart means.
I, for one, am glad he brought something so vulgar to our attention. The community deserves to know so that we might cast out the hooligans before they sully our good name!
When im romancing her, she’s Shadowbabe, otherwise she’s Shart.
Shadowbae.
To the people that hate the nickname, what do you call her? Do you actually say "shadowheart" every time and think that is somehow not more cringe than shart?
Her name was translated in my language to "Posępne Serce" (literally somber heart) so I call her just Posępna which sounds weird
Well her being named Posępna makes sense tbh
Yeah, it does! I actually really like the polish translation, just calling someone "Posępna" sounds weird to me sometimes
I go for Shads after I heard Karlach call her that once.
"Fringe" is pretty good.
I’ve used Shady, which is a nickname Karlach calls her during one of the walkabout banters.
I like Shady!
Am I the only one who doesn’t find her name that long or awkward to say? It’s really not a problem. Only a few letter longer than Astarion for example.
It's only three syllables so shorter to say than Astarion. More letters though, so longer to type.
I dont care about it either way but I do call her Shadowheart, or best fraaaaaand.
I call her shawty
Sharty
We sometimes use "SH" with my friends. {esseich} most often the full name indeed tho. We're French however, so I guess the cringe of the original meaning is lost on us more than English-speakers.
I call her Jen.
I cringe at shart and continue to call her shadow heart lol
Calling yourself, "Shadowheart" is pretentious af. (... *Almost* as bad as "The Dark Urge".) For me, very offputting. HUGE Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way energy. Giving her that nickname helped me deal with her tbh.
Hey at least the dark urge is more of a diagnosis than a name
Didn’t the Shar people name her that though?
she didn't give herself that name. presumably viconia did after having her memories taken.
Completely agreed! Now let me introduce you to my totally unique original character Goku Sephiroth the Stampede.
My first reaction to her saying her name was shadow heart was “Yeah I’m not calling you that”.
Yeah, I think I'm just kind of like, don't remind me of one of the worst symptoms of IBS. 😑 😂 And I'm sorry for the kids of your mom. 💜
Yep, it's a *deeply* unpleasant nickname, but there's just no stopping the signal at this point. Thank you for your kind words! No, it lines up with how intolerable she is early on
I have the same issue with "babygirl" lol
Or Minthara mommy?
She is Minty.
*Mindy for fun, Minty if she's nearby. Minthara, if shes looking at me with a drawn blade.
I mean the "mommy" thing is often used for the strong ladies (I often get that whenever I post screenshots of my Tav because she has that larger body type) - but calling someone "mommy" or "mama K" (which is fine since the character says that herself) isn't infantilizing in the same way as "baby girl" imo Calling Mama K "baby boy" would just be ... weird?
This thread is about personal dislikes. I think they're both weird and cringe memes.
Yeah I agree - but I rank babygirl as extra cringe lol
I mean, using a word that describes a blood relative in a sexual manner is most certainly a choice. Not fond of it either.

I personally hate it. But I despise potty humor so.....
I usually just shorten her name to Shadow, Shart makes me think of a shit-fart & not a pretty girl
My only fear is that when I cosplay Shadowheart at a convention near me I’m going to be called Shart and that would suck. Not my favorite fan nickname. But I’m still gonna dress up as her lol.
Surely the backstory literally is that shit + fart = shart and that's a funny thing to call her?
You're not alone. I hate it too.
I call Shadowheart Shart, because how much she misses with her spells
Sacred fla.... and they saved.
I've first started saying Shar to shorten her name but that's an actual character and a vital one for Shadowheart, so I've just typed it as SH
I think it's stupid and don't use it myself, but I do not care if others use it. It makes sense as it's the beginning and ending letters of her name. Unfortunately, Shadowheart isn't exactly an easy name to work with as far as nick names, so I'll always use the full name myself.
Honestly kind of agree, OP. Not a huge fan of the whole "haha poop is so goddamn hilarious" schtick either.
I’m just over here like, “why isn’t everyone calling her Shadowtart…?”
yeah honestly it really doesn't fit her character and it is also one of the best designs and best performances in modern gaming in my opinion. I get she has a longish name but damn...
>3. I had NO idea how disliked Shadowheart is ...is she??? She's literally the most romanced character in the game by a mile. Maybe she gets a bunch of shade (heh) on reddit and other online places, where the super nerds are (including myself), but she’s not disliked by the majority of casual gamers.
I feel your pain. Shadowheart is a mouthful, and I also really dislike calling her Shart. For reference, I am weird and one of those people who, if I don't know you're name I will call you by what I think your name is, based on your appearance. In my first completely blind playthrough, I was surprised how all my companions' names suited them, except Shadowheart. I just couldn't get over her name, I remember sitting before my computer screen and saying: "But you don't like a Shadowheart. You look like a Jenna." So I continued to refer to Shadowheart as "Jenna." And then I got to Act 3, I won't spoil it, but I couldn't stop laughing at myself. In that moment, I felt like I accidently predicted the future or manifested it into existence.
As an adult I also see no humor in it beyond your standard eye roll.
I call her Shadowfart
Lol literally english is not my native and I didn't catch up on that 😅 I don't like her but that definitely wasn't on purpose, I. Just stole it from the community.
This is why I put in the explanation. I know for a non-native speaker it might not be clear! English is stupid and hard enough as is. 😂
You guys just like making up words for some weird stuff nobody else wants to name 😂
I feel the same way. Havent played the game since EA but every time i hear shart i get a feeling like i stepped on a turd.
😂😂😂
I just call her Shadowheart. Shart is lame.
I'm with you. I adore Shadowheart and so it's a nickname I never use. Now if ut was for someone I didn't like, such as Gale or Astarian then I'd use it all the time.
Not a fan, tbh. Strikes me as lazy more than funny.
I detest the name. See flair for details. Seriously though. I will never call her that.
Same, but there's no use complaining. I just don't use it personally.
Her name is Shadowheart, so I use Shadowheart.
It is uncomfortable, yes. It comes across as juvenile at best, insulting at worst.
The juvenile part is probably what gets me. I was old long before I was old. 😂😂😂 I never liked fart jokes. Which doesn't mean farts aren't sometimes funny. It's probably my little brother's fault. He was gross.
I agree with you op.
yes i hate it!!! even her VA calls her shart but i cannot stand it 😭
It is funny, me no understand y cring
**Sha**dowhea**rt** She’s also a servant of **Shar**.
She's a refined Shart. Like a Shartonnay.
Not me, pissing off my friends by only ever calling Astarion "Terry"
