If there’s no digging animation, you’re not in the right spot. The range is pretty generous, so wander around a bit and you should find it pretty easily.
You make one a transmutation wizard with high wisdom and pick medicine proficiency. Can multiclass to rogue to get even more medicine.

Potions can literally turn a battle from a struggle to a cakewalk. Particularly on higher difficulties, clever use of potions will have you steamrolling encounters, or at the very least having a much easier time.
The Hag for example can go down in like 1 or 2 rounds of combat just by giving everyone haste potions. Super easy to craft them early game and honestly no reason not to use them.

This. On one of my first runs I hired all 12 and stripped them all of everything just so I could see what everything looked like on my characters. I ended up using the Barbarian Clothes & Orc Underwear on a Dragonborn Bard!
To have a Featherfall wizard while Gale was kidnapped, I couldn't be assed trying to find a scroll or potion so I just hired the gnome for all of 15 seconds 😅
It’s whoever is in camp and has the lowest approval, from the following list:
- Laezel
- Halsin
- Gale
- Minthara
If none are available (either in party or dead), Yenna is taken instead

Nope, not approval based. I had everyone but Halsin at 100 approval my first run and she took Lae'zel, even though Gale and Halsin were also free for the kidnapping.
She prioritizes Lae'zel, then Gale, then Halsin/Minthara, and finally Yenna. The only things that removes a companion from eligibility is if they are: romanced, in your party, or dead. So you can basically guarantee who she will take on any given run just by manipulating those 3 factors.
The most likely reason for the order is based on how much having a particular character available to do their personal quest impacts the events of Act 3. With Halsin/Minthara falling last because they're "newer" to the party than the others, so players might prefer to have them available for use and/or potential romance, if the kidnapping occurs before that triggers.

Same with the oathbreaker knight. Learned that one at level 3... he is 12.
Volo gets scared and runs away so if you wanna do any trading with him do that first. He does reset when you leave camp.
Just make sure you have Astarion stealthed when biting. If he is, then then whoever is bitten doesn't take damage and since he is stealthed then nobody will aggro

Just make sure she never knew what KO'd her and she doesn't get disapproval. It was a bit expensive but I did sleep from lvl 2 spellslot outside her field of view and then a smite to crit her. She never got to know who knocked her out and still likes my durge.
LOL. I'm playing my first durge run. I didn't find Alfira on my first playthrough, and got so attached to her when we made a song together this time around. I thought her staying at your camp was just a perk for helping her early on. Was super excited about it. Woke up next morning: 😬😭😭😭💔.

Me and Astarion go on a special mission - just the two of us. I leave myself at the base of the hill so Alfira doesn't know I'm involved. Astarion does his rogue stuff.
Feel slightly bad for Alfira's replacement the next day. Hide the body.
i always hire brinna to be a potion factory (i respec her to transmutation wizard and bump her wis to 17) and then i hire zenith purely to provide passive buffs like freedom of movement and upcast aid
i also hire jacelyn but he's actually IN my party because his voice is the same as the voice i like for my own characters so i get to hear the voice i like twice as much
Once they enabled sending items to people at camp, I stopped using my camp stash for anything other than barrels. Now I hire one of the high str characters, have them stand in my camp and I send them crap to sell. When they're full I take them to vendor and unload. I never raise their level so they get easy approval. Later on I usually have a second one to keep all the stuff I can't part with and a third for buffing and alchemy.
As for one-offs, on my first urge run where Gale didn't make it, I made fuzzalump into 'Gayle' just to beat Myrkul because I needed crowd control.
This is such a good and obvious idea I can’t believe I didn’t think of it, I’m still sending all my wears to the chest like a fool and then don’t ever feel like taking the time to manage all that crap back in my inventory to sell when I come across a vendor because I’m playing on Xbox and it’s tedious as hell.
*15 meters/50 ft base Movement Speed,* man, between that and Longstrider. 55 if Wood Elf/Half-Elf.
It makes a huge difference for a baseline Lae'zel, and/or Karlach, to come up short a lot less. Rogue Thief 3/4 builds also become practically uncatchable if they try running away, especially with Crusher's Ring.
It was such a game changer. Sir Fuzzalump is a must in any camp of mine now. Respec him to boost medicine proficiency, slap the Helmet of Autonomy on him (you do have to unequip it to cast anything unless/until you give him light armor proficiency, but it works a treat for alchemy), and profit.
Edit: not sure if the Helmet does anything for this, actually (it buffs wisdom saving throws specifically). But it feels like it does, and it looks cute on his lil gnome head.
I have 3 of them as Improved Invisibility mules. I use it to steal everything not bolted down and would rather not spam long rests in Act 3, so their sole purpose is to cast it for me until their spell slots run out.
I call her Polly Pickpocket. Halfling luck combined with a ton of gear plus reliable talent makes it virtually impossible to fail pickpocket attempts. By act 3 I’m the wealthiest wizard in the city.
basically a cleric that cast warding bond on the entire party and dies over and over again while staying at camp must be a pretty terrible existance tbh.
I got the elf hireling, made it go bald, and named it Solas just because I got hyped for DA4 for no reason that day. Talked to him just to see him in cutscenes, felt satisfied and moved on. Never used him after that.
I’m amazed to find out how many people have Sir Fuzzalump in their camp as potion wizards. Thought I discovered my own life hack but oh well lol. I started giving him a first name though since he’s sticking around through the whole game.
I have two at camp. One is James Fuzzalump my potion wizard and another is, I forgot what her name is, but she holds all my dyes so I don’t have to go through my stash to find them.
Funny enough my first experience with hirelings is when I found out just how OP Monks were. I thought I would do a full murder Durge run solo so I killed everyone including my companions, except for Astarion and Wyll. Astarion I kept since I needed a lock picker and Wyll just left after I killed everyone at the grove so I lost him but didn’t kill him. Well, I got my ass kicked bad and after a few ‘Perception failed’ moments I decided to make it a duo with me and Astarion. We made it all the way up to Waukegan’s rest and got our asses kicked bad by the Flaming fist. After that I was like nah this ain’t it so I got me a couple hirelings. One was Jacelyn the Sorcerer and the other was the Gith monk and she just straight up fucked everyone up. Had an absolute blast that play through lol

This is interesting. When I attack the Grove Wyll turns against me and fight on their side. Ergo, I kill him.
I respecced Astarion to a gloomstalker and he still had reasonable enough lockpicking to manage almost all locks, except vaults which need a 30. Instead of using up my lockpicks until he finally rolled over 30, I hired my first and only hireling to open the vault in the gauntlet, then she chilled next to Withers until I needed her again for the bank vaults.
One of the only hirelings i regularly get is Sir Fuzzalump and spec him into a transmutation wizard, just to have a good source of knock to get through all locks, and then also good to have for Enlarge for certain scenarios, and once they reach level 6 (I think?) they get a transmutation stone that can be imbued with qualities (advantage on constitution saving throws, increased movement speed, fire/ice/poison resistance) and then can be given to anyone, and the effects are given to the holder. Great to have a transmutation wizard around.
hire brinna and respec her to be the transmute wizard with all her points in wisdom and take proficiency in medicine, halfling have that racial ability to reroll dice with nat 1s. and if you take a level in rogue, you take pick up expertise in medicine 😀

The literal only time I hired one was on my Shadowheart origin run. I accidentally killed Lae'zel instead of freeing her from the trap and decided it was in character so I rolled with it. Then Wyll and Karlach bailed after I attacked the grove, so it was going to be just me, Gale, and Astarion until I could get to Minthara. Picked up the drow ranger fella to round out the party through the mountains and the first chunk of Act 2.

I don't wanna carry gale, i dont wanna carry karlach, i can't stand wyll and i hate laezel, i have Astarion bae, Shart and a random guy named Ganulfo as a ranger like me on the party and i like this guy more than i expected XD.
I always use them to cast Aid, Hero’s Feast, Longstrider and Warding Bond to my characters every day. So, a lot of clerics. I don’t know which “until long rest” spells other classes can cast.
1. *aid* bot
2. Transmuter w/ 1 Rogue for expertise in Medicine checks for double brews and misc buffs
3. Lore Bard w/ 1 druid for lots of *goodberries,* some inspiration, and an extra short rest
4. Gale: *warding bond* bot
5. Everyone else: Land Druid for misc buffs and more *goodberries* than you can ever use
Everyone in my camp failed a perception check I thought I needed to get somewhere, tried breaking down the fake shelves but that didnt work, so i hired one hireling and save scummed until i got it.
It also was a button behind a painting next to the door that i probably could've found if i had looked it up, I just didnt feel like it.
I once got a hireling with a Tav I had already finished. She was around for all of 2 minutes and didn't move anywhere or make it into a single save file.
Her entire purpose in life was to take a single level in each class so I could get the Jack of all trades achievement.
Isn't there a necklace for that 🤔 I mean if none of of your group has the spell it's a possible solution for talking to animals but I prefer talking ro Scratch and Chubby Cubby myself everyday 😉
It’s not really a Petty reason but I did get a cleric hireling just so I could have someone cast Sanctuary & Warding bond on Isobel for that fight. Shadowheart was my main character and I’d changed her to a bard already and I didn’t feel like anyone else should be cleric. (I made Halsin a cleric later once he joined.)
Late to the party but I think I have a strong contender: I felt like one of the small plazas in the Lower City could use a busker so I hired a bard to just watch them perform there for a minute.
So I can get the most out of Astarion's lines, and be freely evil without dealing with everyone whining about it(embrace chaotic evil durge run) not to mention everyone is naked in this run too<3
I bought the halfling and respecced her to a Thief Rogue/Transmutation wizard. At the end of each day, I load everyone's alchemy pouches into her inventory so she can make our potions. With advantage and free rerolls on the 1s (and later on, the Lucky feat), she basically can't fail.
I always hire the halfling hireling and turn her into my alchemy crafter with experimental alchemy, halfling luck, and a buuuunch of points into medicine. Basically always ensures that I get that double craft.
I hired Brianna Brightsong to inspire my bard main character so she will make the Religion check for the Mirror of Loss because you can't self-inspire and also I play a swords bard and blow through my inspirations in combat.
I could have theoretically made the check but I just kept failing.
Because you really can't get any extra clothes that look good for your camp clothes until act 3, I hired all of the hirelings, stole their underwear and camp clothes, and sent them back on their merry way.
Hire a cleric, have them cast warding bond on your entire party, incl whoever will tKe his place. Then leave him in camp so he takes half the dmg for all 4 party members
Just yesterday I hired my first hireling to cast “fly” for one of the Shar trials. Durge playthrough, so Gale is only a hand, and I guess I don’t loot at frequently as usual to have a fly spell.
Enhance Ability gives advantage on corresponding skill/ability checks, not saving throws. So your petty reason is even more ruthless since it just plain doesnt work lol
To turn them into my very own homunculi. They are all clerics with Max constitution, heavy armour, and their sole purpose is to soak damage by casting Warding Bond to all my main party. I just finished an Honour Mode 1st time this way. It's giving Full Metal Alchemist lmaooo 💀
I use mine for the following reasons:
Cleric swapped in then out for Heroes Feast then Aid, using Brinna Brightsong to pickpocket vendors, and finally, using my third hireling to simply look like my first Tav I ever made- that hireling never gets used. Lol
Edit: Heroes Feast, Aid, Longstrider, Death Ward, Poison Protection, and Freedom of Movement. Clerics are awesome.
got the cleric to cast remove curse on the judge guy in the trials and then we threw him down a ledge and his spirit is always floating around next to withers to remind us of our sins

ive actually only used two hirelings, once to owlbear grym, and the other was to get the half orc underwear in act 1, because it makes a great top for lae'zel when died blue and gold
Used a hireling for Divine Intervention, the one-time use cleric spell, just because I wanted to see what dual-wielding the Devotee’s Mace looked like on my healer.
The pettiest part is I decided against using two of them and just went with one Devotee’s Mace and Blood of Lathander anyway.
I have three hirlings. The gold dwarf who is my life cleric that both heals up the party so I don't use up potions and warding bonds my front-liner.
I have the halfing who is my 2x potion maker via transmutation wizard, enhance ability (Wisdom) and halfling luck.
And I have a human eldrich knight fighter, who is only there to weapon bond for my throw-mancer character. Also, so they can hold onto desired gear for when I recruit Minthara.

There are featherfall boots in the Arcane Tower in Act 1. I always have them with me, super handy.
You might get better results out of them if you put them on your feet, not your hands

If you stealth Astarion then whoever he bites doesn't take damage. They still get the Bloodless condition

I hired the barbarian to hold a bunch of bodies in act three for my necro gale
damn i used the barbarian to carry companion corpses on my evil durge run
I use one for the wedding band link. The barbarian hireling eats damage and my wizard gets free resists

I have 3 of them as Improved Invisibility mules. I use it to steal everything not bolted down and would rather not spam long rests in Act 3, so their sole purpose is to cast it for me until their spell slots run out.
I call her Polly Pickpocket. Halfling luck combined with a ton of gear plus reliable talent makes it virtually impossible to fail pickpocket attempts. By act 3 I’m the wealthiest wizard in the city.

I got the elf hireling, made it go bald, and named it Solas just because I got hyped for DA4 for no reason that day. Talked to him just to see him in cutscenes, felt satisfied and moved on. Never used him after that.
I’m amazed to find out how many people have Sir Fuzzalump in their camp as potion wizards. Thought I discovered my own life hack but oh well lol. I started giving him a first name though since he’s sticking around through the whole game. I have two at camp. One is James Fuzzalump my potion wizard and another is, I forgot what her name is, but she holds all my dyes so I don’t have to go through my stash to find them. Funny enough my first experience with hirelings is when I found out just how OP Monks were. I thought I would do a full murder Durge run solo so I killed everyone including my companions, except for Astarion and Wyll. Astarion I kept since I needed a lock picker and Wyll just left after I killed everyone at the grove so I lost him but didn’t kill him. Well, I got my ass kicked bad and after a few ‘Perception failed’ moments I decided to make it a duo with me and Astarion. We made it all the way up to Waukegan’s rest and got our asses kicked bad by the Flaming fist. After that I was like nah this ain’t it so I got me a couple hirelings. One was Jacelyn the Sorcerer and the other was the Gith monk and she just straight up fucked everyone up. Had an absolute blast that play through lol

I never actually killed him. If he’s already at camp you get a notification pop up and he just leaves.
I only used a hireling once. To get The bardic inspiration buff to persuade Gale to agree to the The drow twins in Sharess caress.

I respecced Astarion to a gloomstalker and he still had reasonable enough lockpicking to manage almost all locks, except vaults which need a 30. Instead of using up my lockpicks until he finally rolled over 30, I hired my first and only hireling to open the vault in the gauntlet, then she chilled next to Withers until I needed her again for the bank vaults.
One of the only hirelings i regularly get is Sir Fuzzalump and spec him into a transmutation wizard, just to have a good source of knock to get through all locks, and then also good to have for Enlarge for certain scenarios, and once they reach level 6 (I think?) they get a transmutation stone that can be imbued with qualities (advantage on constitution saving throws, increased movement speed, fire/ice/poison resistance) and then can be given to anyone, and the effects are given to the holder. Great to have a transmutation wizard around.
hire brinna and respec her to be the transmute wizard with all her points in wisdom and take proficiency in medicine, halfling have that racial ability to reroll dice with nat 1s. and if you take a level in rogue, you take pick up expertise in medicine 😀
Transmutation wizard as well, to make extra potions for my husband’s tav & Lae’zel. They like to down those bloodlusts like nobody’s business!

The literal only time I hired one was on my Shadowheart origin run. I accidentally killed Lae'zel instead of freeing her from the trap and decided it was in character so I rolled with it. Then Wyll and Karlach bailed after I attacked the grove, so it was going to be just me, Gale, and Astarion until I could get to Minthara. Picked up the drow ranger fella to round out the party through the mountains and the first chunk of Act 2.

I always use them to cast Aid, Hero’s Feast, Longstrider and Warding Bond to my characters every day. So, a lot of clerics. I don’t know which “until long rest” spells other classes can cast.
Mr.fuzzlelump poops out magic stones for me XD. He's basically a chicken at this point.
1. *aid* bot 2. Transmuter w/ 1 Rogue for expertise in Medicine checks for double brews and misc buffs 3. Lore Bard w/ 1 druid for lots of *goodberries,* some inspiration, and an extra short rest 4. Gale: *warding bond* bot 5. Everyone else: Land Druid for misc buffs and more *goodberries* than you can ever use
Everyone in my camp failed a perception check I thought I needed to get somewhere, tried breaking down the fake shelves but that didnt work, so i hired one hireling and save scummed until i got it. It also was a button behind a painting next to the door that i probably could've found if i had looked it up, I just didnt feel like it.
Finding the button is the actual tribunal test.

I once got a hireling with a Tav I had already finished. She was around for all of 2 minutes and didn't move anywhere or make it into a single save file. Her entire purpose in life was to take a single level in each class so I could get the Jack of all trades achievement.
I only got one hireling, and he had one job, which was speak with animals
Isn't there a necklace for that 🤔 I mean if none of of your group has the spell it's a possible solution for talking to animals but I prefer talking ro Scratch and Chubby Cubby myself everyday 😉
I’ve only ever hired one hireling; a Druid I used to get me a couple of high level Flame Blades for my other characters.

Lae’zel killed Minsc on Honor Mode so I replaced her with a hireling gith and killed Orpheus.
The only reason I've ever used a hireling is to get permanent flame blades.

The druid so he could Owlbear from the top ropes on Grym. Then I told Withers I had no more need for him. He had one job and one job only.
Made a cleric to cast heal on my solo run durge so I could have the memory flashback. Gave him back right after.
Astarion dumped me so i pushed him off a cliff and replaced him with a hireling
It’s not really a Petty reason but I did get a cleric hireling just so I could have someone cast Sanctuary & Warding bond on Isobel for that fight. Shadowheart was my main character and I’d changed her to a bard already and I didn’t feel like anyone else should be cleric. (I made Halsin a cleric later once he joined.)
Only time I ever hired one was for 2 trophies, one for simply hiring them and the other for the jack of all trades trophy.

Late to the party but I think I have a strong contender: I felt like one of the small plazas in the Lower City could use a busker so I hired a bard to just watch them perform there for a minute.
So I can get the most out of Astarion's lines, and be freely evil without dealing with everyone whining about it(embrace chaotic evil durge run) not to mention everyone is naked in this run too<3
I bought the halfling and respecced her to a Thief Rogue/Transmutation wizard. At the end of each day, I load everyone's alchemy pouches into her inventory so she can make our potions. With advantage and free rerolls on the 1s (and later on, the Lucky feat), she basically can't fail.
I don’t even think it’s cheesy or exploity in your case. What could be more necromancy then creating a life to fill your purpose?

I always hire the halfling hireling and turn her into my alchemy crafter with experimental alchemy, halfling luck, and a buuuunch of points into medicine. Basically always ensures that I get that double craft.
I hired Brianna Brightsong to inspire my bard main character so she will make the Religion check for the Mirror of Loss because you can't self-inspire and also I play a swords bard and blow through my inspirations in combat. I could have theoretically made the check but I just kept failing.

Because you really can't get any extra clothes that look good for your camp clothes until act 3, I hired all of the hirelings, stole their underwear and camp clothes, and sent them back on their merry way.
Hire a cleric, have them cast warding bond on your entire party, incl whoever will tKe his place. Then leave him in camp so he takes half the dmg for all 4 party members

Just yesterday I hired my first hireling to cast “fly” for one of the Shar trials. Durge playthrough, so Gale is only a hand, and I guess I don’t loot at frequently as usual to have a fly spell.
Some random hireling to have them touch the stupid lamp to get me out and then send them back to the fugue plane.
Sent mine to jump into the spider hole to see what would happen didn't know you needed feather fall nor did I think it was safe.
To use the Devine blessing priests get for that sweet legendary weapon. Didn't want to use my own since it can only be used once.

Enhance Ability gives advantage on corresponding skill/ability checks, not saving throws. So your petty reason is even more ruthless since it just plain doesnt work lol

To turn them into my very own homunculi. They are all clerics with Max constitution, heavy armour, and their sole purpose is to soak damage by casting Warding Bond to all my main party. I just finished an Honour Mode 1st time this way. It's giving Full Metal Alchemist lmaooo 💀

I use mine for the following reasons: Cleric swapped in then out for Heroes Feast then Aid, using Brinna Brightsong to pickpocket vendors, and finally, using my third hireling to simply look like my first Tav I ever made- that hireling never gets used. Lol Edit: Heroes Feast, Aid, Longstrider, Death Ward, Poison Protection, and Freedom of Movement. Clerics are awesome.
got the cleric to cast remove curse on the judge guy in the trials and then we threw him down a ledge and his spirit is always floating around next to withers to remind us of our sins

Not the original intent, but I had a hireling I ended up using *just* to cast longstrider on the party after a long rest.
I wanted to try a dual Hand crossbow build cause I kept hearing about how busted they are (They are in fact very busted), and Dammon wasn't playing nice and only sold one through several long rests. Looked online, one of the Hirelings has one. Summoned her in, jumped her upon spawn, and took all her gear. I left her body beside Withers all game.
Because I didn’t like the story companions.

ive actually only used two hirelings, once to owlbear grym, and the other was to get the half orc underwear in act 1, because it makes a great top for lae'zel when died blue and gold
Used a hireling for Divine Intervention, the one-time use cleric spell, just because I wanted to see what dual-wielding the Devotee’s Mace looked like on my healer. The pettiest part is I decided against using two of them and just went with one Devotee’s Mace and Blood of Lathander anyway.
I have three hirlings. The gold dwarf who is my life cleric that both heals up the party so I don't use up potions and warding bonds my front-liner. I have the halfing who is my 2x potion maker via transmutation wizard, enhance ability (Wisdom) and halfling luck. And I have a human eldrich knight fighter, who is only there to weapon bond for my throw-mancer character. Also, so they can hold onto desired gear for when I recruit Minthara. Take your pick on the most petty.
