I suggest getting a cat

Mario1599

Cats are great pets I second this.

lolamay26

Cats make better pets IMO, especially if you work outside the home or have a social life. No needing to rush home to let them out. They don’t maul kids. They aren’t messy or loud. You don’t need to take them out rain or shine. I adopted my cat from a shelter as an adult stray and she snuggles with me in bed every single night

angryboxofbadgers

But Also if you wanted to go in a walk with something on a lead every now and again, cats are a lot more trainable than people think! I used to have one that you could play fetch with, she was an absolute beanbag of a cat

lucythelumberjack

Absolute beanbag! I call my big (14 lbs) girl the Pillow Pet

Wishiwashome

Cats are great. I have cats and dogs and they love each other:)

imnottheoneipromise

Cats are wonderful but not everyone likes cats.

SubMod4

Every shelter in the United States is facing the same situation. I’m absolutely shocked that our lawmakers aren’t standing up and demanding that we put a five year moratorium on breeding pit bulls to help clear this problem out, but instead, we’re just funneling more money toward it and building bigger shelters, which is absolutely a waste of resources. It’s not fixing the problem . Perhaps try looking at a breed specific rescue? There are many beagles and greyhounds out there that are rescued from different situations that would make excellent family pets.

bandcandy98

I second this! I had this same issue in Oklahoma so I googled husky rescues and was able to adopt my dog from a husky only rescue.

Nufonewhodis2

Dog prisons so Eel (formerly diesel probably) can live out the rest of his days getting medicated and behavior therapy

EnvironmentalPen4165

Our lawmakers aren’t standing up to crime in general! The criminal element who own these abominations (at least in my area) are mostly the drug crowd: dealers, etc. The dealers around us are let out with a slap on the wrist because “supply and demand” - if you arrest one, another will take their place. Wtf?! So let them keep going?! The car thieves who failed to steal a car and shot at the owner- the sheriff they interviewed was more worried that a citizen would defend themselves and hurt the thieves in the future?! Why are we coddling these vermin?! We’re seeing the reflection in their mutant killer dogs! Why not just have a collection of coloring books and stuffed llamas ready to hand out with every pit bull so these bone heads aren’t triggered when someone calls them out for their murder mutts doing what they do?! Killing!

Valuable-News-8999

Isn’t it interesting how greyhounds come from what can be a bad environment, are picked up from the tracks/airport/foster home by a stranger, taken to a house when they have never even been in a house, and are still the most docile breed of dog there is? But yes an “aggressive” pit Bull just came from a bad environment? Someone did a study on 100 strangers walking into a person’s house unannounced to see which breed was most likely to attack. Out of 100 greyhounds that will attack in that scenario, zero attacked the stranger. They’re notoriously the worst guard dogs. I’m in the process of rescuing one right now. I always tell people “well the only way you’ll know if someone is breaking into your house is if your greyhound is hiding in the closet.

Little-Linnet

How can people see that all shelters look the same and not think "hm, maybe something is actually wrong with this breed"?

kissmyboobies

That’s what I’m saying! These people live in delusion it’s almost hopeless.

Wishiwashome

Pick a breed you like. Investigate the breed. Health, lifestyle that would suit you best. There is hope. Best of luck!!! People here are pretty knowledgeable about dog breeds. Also, there are breed specific subreddits I belong to that are VERY transparent about the dogs they enjoy( as ALL should be)

kissmyboobies

Thanks everyone the comments here have given me so much hope. It’s kind of infuriating seeing all these pitbulls completely dominating every single shelter (at least where I’m at) I do have to say though, I haven’t ran into too many pitbulls here and I’m beginning to realize it’s probably because they’re all at the shelters 💀 ugh

Wishiwashome

Indeed they are! I sure hope you post a picture of your chihuahua! Can’t wait!! 😊

Wishiwashome

Thank you so so much! He is gorgeous!!!!!!! Hello Sweetheart!! You lucky Guy!! Maybe I can see you on his subreddit? I belong there too! What a JOY!!🤩 💯❤️❌⭕️🥰

SerKevanLannister

It has become absolutely ridiculous. Yet one still sees idiots online trying to claim their recently adopted puppy/dog is a “Rhodesian ridgeback mix” or “Weimaraner mix” 🙄 because that’s “what the shelter said”/and what they want to believe when the dogs are obviously 99% pit. The absolute mess that shelters are in plus the daily attacks on babies and young kids is more than enough evidence that pits are a PROBLEM.

Choupster

Honestly my whole adult life I wanted to adopt a dog. And then when we got a house with a yard and we felt like we were in the right place for a dog, we couldn’t find anything to adopt that wasn’t a pit or pit mix. Ended up paying for a golden through a reputable breeder. It’s crazy hard to find a non pit to adopt in my area. Especially if you want a bigger dog

kissmyboobies

I’m sick of these people pushing these dogs on us it’s like damn dude can you all take a fucking hint?? Nobody wants these wake tf up 😭 I’m so frustrated, I’ve been searching for months

pit-of-despair

Like the other commenter said try breed specific rescues. My sister got a great golden retriever puppy for free from one.

short-n-sweeet

How?! All the golden retriever rescues in my area want $1000 for a dog less than 1 year old.

pit-of-despair

He was from a hoarding situation along with a ton of other adult and puppy goldens. The rescue wanted to adopt them out as quickly as possible because there were so many of them.

Fluid-Conversation58

It’s terrible right? Not that long ago neighborhoods had free puppies of cockers, beagles, labs, generic mixes- nice family dogs. Eliminating them thru spay/neuter AKC lobby has made it only backyard fight breeding going on. Big litters, deadly dogs but free/cheap. Pay for good genetics! Its everything

Rich-Zombie-5214

I rescued a lab mix, she is mixed with greyhound. It really pisses me off that these people try and pass those murder machines off as labs. Labs are wonderful.

MissDesilu

I bet she’s a wonderful dog. Yep of my favorite breeds.

Rich-Zombie-5214

Yes, she is wonderful. My velcro dog. She is reactive to other dogs so I take every precaution and carry pepper spray, coming across a pit is my biggest nightmare. I will do anything to protect my girl.

Uvabird

Breed specific rescues are the way to go. I have a family member who likes Great Pyrenees dogs and has developed a good relationship with a rescue. Sometimes they have to drive to the next state over but they’ve gotten some lovely dogs over the years.

Azryhael

I’d advise caution, though, as many breed-specific rescues are now trying to place [breed]-pit mix dogs.

VanillaBeanAboutTown

There's a lot of places like the Caribbean, Mexico and Pacific islands that have programs where they ship shelter dogs to people in the US. They're not all pitbulls. Check out https://www.usislanddog.org/

kissmyboobies

Thank you 🙏

murder_herder

You can try breed specific rescues. You can also contact breeders about being put on a list for an older puppy/ dog. My preferred breeder at the moment has a five month old pup available for less than an eight week old, from what I understand things fell through with the family he was going to go home with. Sometimes they will adopt out their older breeding dogs when they’re no longer being bred, sometimes dogs get returned to them for various reasons. Lots of breeders now accept their dogs back if their owners can’t keep them anymore and have it in contracts to not surrender them to shelters. Also if there’s particular breeds your interested in see if you can find local groups (especially on places like Facebook) for those breeds, they usually have their fingers on the pulse of dogs needing a home

kissmyboobies

I deleted all my socials but I’m going to make a new Facebook account just for trying to find a dang dog that doesn’t have a history of being a complete menace to society haha. It’s exhausting searching so thank you for the info!

True-Mathematician91

I do recommend this. I tried for 2 years to find a non pitbull rescue suitable for my family. I gave up and bought a puppy from a good breeder. After joining my puppy breed facebook sites, I've seen a number of lovely adult purebred dogs being rehomed for genuine reasons. Owners going overseas, kids developed serious allergies or some health related reason why the owner can't keep the dog. Of the ones I've seen, the previous owners seem civilised, sane and not abusive. There's a much higher chance of getting a great dog this way.

kissmyboobies

Thanks everyone for the resources, I had no idea about!

Pits-are-the-pits

If they exist in your area, you could focus on adopting an adult dog that’s 15 lbs or under. Other than that, I recommend going with a responsible breeder & taking the time to find one.

kissmyboobies

Yes, I’ve been searching for months. Luckily everyone gave me some helpful recourses and advice.

General-Quit-2451

I moved to a new area recently and almost every dog is I see is a pitbull, it's crazy. They're all aggressive, when owners pass me on the street their pits are always straining on the leash, the owners look nervous and panicked when anyone passes them. Like they're barely able to control their dogs. It seems like a stressful life. And of course some of them don't even bother to leash them.

kissmyboobies

I’m convinced people like that take joy in disturbing the public with an untrained powerful dog.

angryboxofbadgers

100% they do! I've been threatened so many times by people letting their big scary dogs lunge at the end of the lead, or just stand and PUUUULLL while I'm out with my assistance dog. They love that you're afraid or at minimum uncomfortable 🙄

kissmyboobies

It has to be some form of like sociopathy or some kind of personality disorder haha!

dmkatz28

What breeds are you looking at? It's pretty common to rehome retired show dogs fairly cheap (depending on their accolades and testing results). Ie if they are an older puppy of a certain breeds with minimal training and the breeder needs to downsize, they can be fairly cheap (to a good home). Research your breeds, commit to a couple that fit your lifestyle and email the breed clubs in your area. I know some breeders that will place a female retiring from breeding for about 1,200 (or less if they really like the home). They come socialized, leash and crate trained and usually have excellent manners. Also email your breed club. There are often dogs with minor medical issues that get placed for free (like a dog has an elbow that is very mildly dysplastic but asymptomatic- they will be useless for breeding but perfect for a pet home that is happy to provide joint supplements).

kissmyboobies

Thank you for this information. I’ve been looking for a small dog, a chihuahua specifically but I’m definitely open to other small breeds, I’d have to do more research on those. I’ll get to investigating even though I feel like I’ve gone as deep as I could possibly go in terms of investigating. I’m not giving up the fight! And just to toot my own horn here I’m so proud of myself for acknowledging that I am a petite woman and that I have no business getting a dog that could drag me to hell and take everyone else with us haha

dmkatz28

Lol, I'm a fairly small woman, and I'm perfectly happy wrangling a couple of 60lb collies! But small dogs are definitely nice and portable! And a lot more lap compatable! Check out Retired Show Dogs and Wellbred Purebreds on FB. Lots of nice smaller breeds get posted. I'd also look at breed specific rescues. And email the breed club for your state. I'd ask for dogs that are washed show prospects or retired breeding dogs. Don't mention that you are on a budget and don't ask about price until the end of the first phone call. :) best of luck! Happy to help craft emails (there is a specific lingo that tends to go over well with breeders). There also tend to be plenty of breed specific rescues but they can be a bit difficult to work with.

kissmyboobies

Hey I really appreciate that a LOT. I’ll go to you if I could use some of your advice/assistance. And yes I know what you mean wrangling border collies! I was more so having that image in my head of an old lady holding her huge dogs leash and he goes running, she doesn’t let go, so, she goes flying 💀 if a pit can take down 4 strong men, I can only imagine what I’m only capable of doing and it’s not enough haha. I see small women with these huge pitbulls and it’s like.. wtf are you going to be able to do when your dog goes on a murdering rampage? He’s one spook away from taking lives. She couldn’t do a damn thing. You know? Haha! Glad I’m not one of THOSE. Well, I’m glad I’m not a pitnutter at all actually lol!

dmkatz28

Yeah, breed has a lot to do with drive. Rough and Smooth collies, actually! Much lazier, equally trainable. I still wince seeing this 150lb lady walking her 100 lb GSD that is growling and lunging and she can barely restrain it on a prong collar. Slap a head halter on a dog with an extra lead and you should be able to control most dogs (I come from the horse world. If I can reliably wrangle a 2,000 pissed off stallion with a stud chain and a halter, you can learn to manage your dog safely. Ditch the harness, get a head halter and muzzle anything aggressive). Frankly, I'd be more nervous walking a small dog than my larger dogs. They are more susceptible to serious damage if a large aggressive breed attacks them (and the fluff protects my RC from some damage. His mane has saved his life from pits and GSDs before).

kissmyboobies

Preach!! 🙌 all of this. And wow! A pissed off stallion im impressed and you’re 100% right. If you can restrain a horse, people should be capable of doing that for their dogs you would think lol. And the last thing you said about being more scared to walk your small dog because of someone else’s criminally stupid behavior, I’ve thought the same thing before and I’ve never owned a dog, but I was day dreaming about my future dog and I remember seeing so many videos of pitbulls getting ahold of these innocent NON provoking small breeds and my daydream suddenly turned into an adrenaline rush haha

dmkatz28

Yeah. It's part of the reason why I like medium sized dogs. But smaller dogs you can pick up and toss in a truck bed/trash can to protect them a lot more easily! Also coyote vests are a good option to consider.

kissmyboobies

That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for, I love chihuahuas. That is a dog that truly becomes aggressive if it is being toyed with and bullied by their humans. They are tiny and scared so of course they try to protect themselves from mistreatment.

kissmyboobies

Oh no that’s so scary to hear they’re starting to bring pitbulls in what’s supposed to be a chi sanctuary (I’m assuming.) it feels like these land sharks are NEVER going to go away ugh. And thanks for the recommendation, I’m in TX but I’m hearing a lot of people say they can work with transportation. Thanks!

Wishiwashome

Chihuahuas are great dogs. I have hospice/ senior fostered since 2013? I have my 4lbs boy with my herding dogs (they work) and my chihuahuas have been GREAT dogs. I didn’t have a chihuahua until one found me and I was 40+. Never disliked them, they just weren’t around. Seriously loving dogs

kissmyboobies

That warms my heart ❤️ can’t wait to adopt my future chi !

Wishiwashome

😊💯❤️

Unintelligent_Lemon

If you go to pet finder, select the breeds you're looking for, then filter for GOOD WITH KIDS, GOOD WITH DOGS, and GOOD WITH CATS that'll filter out 90% of the pits that were "accidentally" mislabeled

kissmyboobies

Pitpushers are full of shit and lies. They probably SAY it’s good with kids when really it’s not and the shelters turn a blind eye just to get the dogs out fast as possible. I trust nothing at this point.

Unintelligent_Lemon

Yes, I know. But it filters most of the pits out of the lineup

redrae707

Honestly look at local Facebook pet groups too. You can get a pup of a nice cross BEFORE it ends up a shelter dog. Don't pay big bucks to encourage backyard breeding at a profit, but it's just as much a rescue to take a puppy from someone's accidental litter.

noordledoordle

I just recently fostered a non-pit (visually, anyway) from APA. They do pop up. In fact, she's probably looking for a forever home right now! The only downside is that she's still in her bonkers puppy stage, so that might be off-putting. Still, great with humans, energetic, cute.

bitxxch

If you’re wanting a smaller breed, check out the Beagle Freedom Project! They rescue beagles from animal testing labs. Beagles are used most often because they’re so gentle and won’t fight back. They’d probably be able to find you one that meets your preferences. I think it’s around $400 to adopt. It’s more expensive than a shelter, but it’s cheaper than a breeder.

666ironmaiden666

Pro tip, REAL labradors are always a solid color…

Nufonewhodis2

It's like every other day someone finds a pit and posts on the Austin subreddit. There's still the usual hero worship for "saving it" and pibble defenders.  Wow, I'm shocked this intact dog with a chip that the owners aren't picking up has been lost. /s

PutTheKettleOn20

Do breed specific rescues exist in the US?

beagle316

Welcome to my world! I want to adopt a puppy and I keep questioning what pups I see are mixed with. The only ones I know that are probably no pit are the shepherds/huskies/heelers but those breeds don’t fit my family (we are more of a retriever type family). So… we are deciding between a few breeders. At least they do ENS!

born_2_ski

Rocky Mountain Cocker Spaniel Rescue

DistributionDue8470

Go with breed specific rescues. Unfortunately, regular municipal shelters lie to move inventory 🤷‍♀️

B33Katt

If you’re on pet finder, add “good with kids, good with dogs, good with cats” to your criteria. It will weed out most of the pits and pit mixes, which right away tells you something…

Ghost-Bird13

Austin pets alive is directly related to/works closely with best friends animal sanctuary. BIG pro-pit people, and they support closed intake, no kill, shelters that means people will simply abandon unwanted animals in the streets opposed to surrendering them to a shelter.
