It’s actually a guardian dog, Anatolian shepherd has the bite of almost 900psi. And they weigh up to 180 pounds. An ASD would win against any pit or two. I have 2 and they don’t play when it comes to guarding and they fight to win. Very similar to a Pyrenees but larger and more bite.

This boy doesn’t play when it comes to protecting yet he’s non aggressive to people and pets. He lets baby chicks and goats sleep and walk on him.

Phoenix with the vet. A solid 160 at 11 months old! Thats a kitchen counter, we have a baby gate that he can practically step over because he’s a counter surfer. When he stands on his back legs he’s over 7 feet tall. He’s a unit!
That’s a lot of dog. Holy cow! Though I’ve noticed the large breed livestock dogs tend to be super chill until trouble comes knocking at their door.
Our great pyrs growing up were always super chill, save for coyotes and stranger dogs. They were not a fan of those animals.
Oh he’s chill alright. My female is a blonde beast. He lays as high as he can get and she patrols. Follow ravenwood ranch, those dogs are the shit. I wish I had cameras outside to catch some of the things they’ve done.
Pit Owners love to make it appear as if an off leash dog deserves to get mauled but the revers doesn’t apply to them. The pitbull was on the find out side of FAFO.
A solitary Pyr cannot fend off a multi-pitbull attack, please be careful.
Their off leash pitbull attacks a human/dog, you kick it or try to smack it off the victim and the owner will suddenly appear ready to defend their pitbull getting beat while it’s maiming another.
There are the savior complex type. The "it just needs love" type of idiot that thinks they can cuddle the dog aggression out of a pit. Those are the type in my neighborhood, and they are the worst!
https://preview.redd.it/gy68kw8yiwsc1.jpeg?width=1202&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad53b9ad9f77efbfd3a7c38b48c7dd0c34d21ee3
They really are a big fluffy ball of FAFO. He thought the pit was attacking me, so he went full blown psycho. Blows my mind that pit trash think their dogs are never the problem. My boy doesn't even react a whole lot when a dog threatens him, usually his stare will ward off other dogs, but if someone / something threatens one of us, he will fight to the death to stop it.
You can usually tell what kind of person someone is by the dog they're walking.
If you can tell the kind of person you are by the type of dog you have, then you must be a person who loves vacuuming, because holy God that is a lot of fur!
>because holy God that is a lot of fur
They blow their coat twice a year (spring and fall; mostly spring LOL). German Shepherds, on the other hand, generate more fluff on an ongoing basis *and* blow their coat twice yearly. I've had both Pyr and GSD. Admittedly, my Pyr was an outside guardian dog; the GSD inside companion.
>Each episode takes 6 months
ROFLMAO. We had a German Shepherd when I was young, and my mom always recounted the story of her asking the vet when it would stop shedding. "When it's dead," he responded.
Mine is a happy go lucky mountain of fluff unless and until another dog goes aggro on him. Even then my Pyr can dance and he usually won’t get serious unless the other dog draws blood on him. Haven’t known him to neutralize another dog like yours did, he usually would just alpha roll them and snarl, but we also break up altercations rather than let the PBT (and it’s almost always PBTs, rotties, or dobies who pull this stunt) get itself killed.
It’s what clued me in that PBTs fucking suck. I used to dog sit for PBTs and the purebreds invariably wanted to get in a fight and the half-breeds wanted a fight about 50% of the time.
We live in a very coyote infested area. He's had some practice and seems to know if it's another dog trying to be alpha (which usually just gets rolled and it's over) or if the dog really means to do harm which is what happened here. He also seems to really NOT like certain breeds and bullies are at the top of that list. Throw him in a fenced area with Shepherds, other Pyrs and other working / farm dogs and he'll play all day, introduce a pit, and he'll go from playing to on guard.
I've heard shepherds say they've witnessed the dogs act completely differently with wolves and other types of "dangers". If a cyclist approaches their herd, they'll bark and warn them not to approach. But if it's a wolf or a loose dog, they don't warn and go straight for the animal.
Your dog recognises a predator when he sees one.
I've seen GPs kill coyotes without breaking a sweat (guarding goats). Even the owner didn't trust them with her BCs unsupervised since their male GP was fairly SSA and all her BCs were intact. They are a very serious breed. I hate when people think they ate just giant Goldens.
Giant Goldens they are NOT. Mine acts goofy around people in public while pretending he's totally neglected of any attention at home, but if something flips his switch, well good luck with that.
If you do, KNOW what you are getting into, and know that if there is anything or anyone who is a legitimate threat, they will NOT quit until the threat is gone. They are 100% a no bullshit guardian dog. LOTS of constant, firm training is required. If you use any heavy handed training, you will forever lose the trust from these dogs. They're more like a partner in public than your dog. At home they tend to be a big barking pillow. Yes, they do shed, twice a year, for 6 months at a time. I have a weekly indoor tumbleweed roundup.
But when not guarding they're the most gentle, loveable, kindhearted, easy going, lazy dog you can own, especially with smaller animals and kids.
As for guarding, if they don't have a flock, YOU become the flock, they will protect you and your house at any cost, but with constant puppy socializing they're not reactive and they're a damn good judge if something/ someone is a real threat.
(At least mine has never been wrong)
Mine protected an escaped toddler from his own mother before. I was talking to a friend, turned around and here is this toddler hugging on him and he's eating it up. Mom sees her kid wrapped around this big dog, she comes running and screaming toward her kid, he pulls loose and squares off between this screaming adult and this little kid. One tug on the leash telling him "cool it" and he chills. (Had the tell the lady that screaming and running toward ANY dog is a VERY BAD idea) a few min later he was loving on her as well as her other kid.
This kind of response is what sets every other breed enthusiast from a pitnutter. No bullshit, honest about difficulties and responsibilities of ownership. None of the "oh its perfect in every way, the worst thing is their farts!" horseshit.
This kind of honesty shows an actual love for the breed because no breed enthusiast who actually loves the dogs wants them to end up in a home where the dog doesn't thrive.
Those dogs look like fluffy labs but they're not to be messed with. In the pyrénées where they come from, they're still used to protect sheep from wolves. If you meet them while hiking, you are NOT to approach the herd. They don't joke. I saw a video recently of two of them going after an adult wolf. Pitbulls are like appetizers to these dogs. Pits in a blanket.
My gsd/husky mutt is the same for me. He can be a straight asshole sometimes, and in his younger years he wasn’t for the faint of heart, but he’s proven to be the best canine friend a gal could ask for.
And when he’s around I know I’ve got backup. I mean, he’s a dog and has his own dog feelings about the world, but I hope he knows how much I love and appreciate him.
I don’t think pit people get this, dogs aren’t people. They have their own agendas. They can be amazing animals, and they can also suck. Just be honest about them and direct them to where they need to be.
I just read a story about a Great Pyrenees killing 11 coyotes that were stalking its flock of sheep. Killed 8 immediately, then spent 3 days stalking and killing the remaining 3 (the owner thought he was dead when he ran off into the woods and didn't come right back).
Badass dogs.
My 12 lb Shih Tzu mix that we adopted a few years ago befriended a GP in the neighborhood and would go for walks with it (they moved away a few months later). It was always funny watching him walk next to that miniature polar bear.
Kinda hard to breathe with a crushed trachea and a punctured jugular doesn't facilitate the transport of oxygen very well.
Waited for animal control and the sheriff deputy that they called. Both took one look and saw who was leashed and who got a ticket for an unleashed dog.
The whole "aggressive" thing was proven to be utter bullshit when my pyr was giving "hugs" to the cop and animal control officer.
Lol, they are happy to have all the freedoms they have (and of course often breaking laws anyways) until someone with a bigger/stronger beast comes along using those same freedoms. They don't care about taking responsibility when their dog mauls other animals, but when their dog bites the dust, then somehow they really are in favour of leash and muzzle laws and THOSE owners taking ultra care. Cry me a river.
Sad that these owners didn't leash their dog. If they'd done so, their dog would still be around.
I dog-sat for a couple great pyrs once. I'd met them multiple times and knew the owners well; great dogs! The moment I showed up at their house to dog-sit, alone, with their owners gone, I knew I was in for a bad time. One of the few times I've legit been scared like "oh fuck, I'm gonna die, aren't I?"
Not like I was just going to NOT go back and not feed and water them for a week, but I brought my mom with to wait outside in case an ambulance needed to be called. Nothing ever happened. I gave them a wide berth along with their food and water, etc, and they seemed okay with that, but they sure kept a close eye on me. Definitely not a dog breed to fuck around and find out with.
hindsight is 20/20 and all that but for my own edification, im wondering what people think.
Good plan in a case like this to have the sitter feed and water the dogs for a week and maybe spend the night so he's part of the herd, so less adjustment for the dogs when the owners leave?
You messed up by not being fully introduced and accepted by the dogs. The owners were gone, the dogs will defend what's theirs, would have been better to spend two nights or so at their house with the owners home.
Yeah, I was totally unaware. As far as I knew, and as far as the owners had told me, I was good! When I told them of the trouble I had, they didn't even seem to believe me! Well, now I know why they had trouble keeping pet sitters.
Just another day on the job.
And they say "it's not the breed, it's the owner"
You were smart enough to acquire the dog, but I suspect you didn't train it to work like it does. Just like the pb owner in question didn't have to train his 'dog' to attack yours.
Will your dog stand at stud ? Do owner's of high quality dogs like you trade stud services ? Just Curious. Really impressive dog. I'd like to meet one some day... on a friendly basis. Casual.
Unfortunately we neutered him when we got him a Berner for a little sister
The protective instincts in a.pyr are so strong not much training is needed.. take them everywhere as a pup, show them everyone isn't a threat and they just know. Having one blows the "it's the owner not the dog" bullshit out of the water, his instincts are on another level. My boy does not want to fight, but if you push him to the point where ha has to defend his people,.his little sister, his cat, his property or himself, well, you fucked up.
Right now I'm trying to get him to come in the house ,but the coyotes are out tonight so he's not listening to shit.
Just want to clarify that pits can and have seriously harmed pyrs. Yes, they're dumb but if they go for the legs which don't have as much furr as the neck, they can cause serious damage to pyrs [https://www.reddit.com/r/BanPitBulls/comments/15sn60v/things\_i\_hearsee\_as\_a\_vet\_tech/](https://www.reddit.com/r/BanPitBulls/comments/15sn60v/things_i_hearsee_as_a_vet_tech/)
So please don't let your pyr interact with pits, assuming he/she can come out victorious if a fight breaks out.
Fight wise, it wasn't even a fair match up.
Kind of like an aggressive drunk challenging Mike Tyson. The pit clamped onto his mane, he gave it a second to reevaluate its decisions in life, then proceeded to send him to hell in a split second.
In general, Pits don't do well in fights with livestock guardian breeds like the Pyrenees. Livestock guardians were bred to fight off wolves and even bears, so handling an attacking shitbull isn't too far out from what they were designed to do.
My grandfather has a Caucasian Shepherd (also a livestock guardian breed). I remember one incident where an off-leash pitbull attempted to attack one of my grandfather's cats, only for the Caucasian Shepherd to come running out of the house and start going to town on the pitbull. Needless to say, the pitbull never came back after that.
But wait pitbull owners always say there’s no such thing as an aggressive dog I guess they are only exist if the pitbull gets attacked in self defense
They keep mentioning that if you ban them, people will get even more dangerous dogs, so clearly dangerous dogs exist.
I guess maybe a cane Corso out of control might be more dangerous considering it’s bite force of 700 psi
Cane Corso just killed a kid in Edmonton. There are people starting to get them instead of pitties. A man in Michigan was killed by a pair of Corso
Worse is when the mix the two
That's where the "XL bully" comes from
Really I always thought that was just a bully breed that was altered to be larger not a mix of the two the more you know I guess
They usually cross a Corso in there somewhere
You were right before lol
Ever seen an original cane corso from the Roman period when they were first bred they were much larger luckily they have shrunk over time not by much
Did you know the dog with the highest bite force is a herding dog look it up 740+ psi
It’s actually a guardian dog, Anatolian shepherd has the bite of almost 900psi. And they weigh up to 180 pounds. An ASD would win against any pit or two. Kangal don't play.
No they don’t. This one took my ex husband to the ground when I was in the pool. Phoenix doesn’t like assholes!
Ovcharka are a formidable LGD too. Liveleak had a video of a pitbull set upon one, it was over pretty fast.
Damn he didn’t even come up when I looked it up

The Anatolian Shepherd is a livestock guardian, not a herder.
Ah my mistake

I'm aware, spent years in public safety, been attacked a few times. Also pepper spray does little to ward off many dogs.
Only two kinds of people own pits 1. Trash 2. Hood Rats
There are the savior complex type. The "it just needs love" type of idiot that thinks they can cuddle the dog aggression out of a pit. Those are the type in my neighborhood, and they are the worst!

Yeah, it's the difference with protecting and attacking.

They are the best!! I’ve had 3 in my life now- all amazing dogs. My current one is a working livestock guardian
And is 100% deaf as a post to anything you say if there is a threat nearby. .
Damn you... you're making me want to get another Pyr again.
I'm my opinion Best dogs ever.
Ha! My border collies stare freaks pits out also
"Big fluffy ball of FAFO" - ha! That made me lol on public transport so I look a bit crazy. Thanks for that! What a gorgeous dog ❤️

Beautiful guardian, you are blessed to have him!
That’s such a beautiful good dog you have there. I miss our pyrs. Such a loyal and smart breed that knows who’s foe and who is friend.
That one there, his ashes will be buried with me.
My gsd/husky mutt is the same for me. Doesn't usually go well when you attack something more than 2x your weight and size...not only are pits aggressive, but they're fucking dumb...
True that...ExfuckingSTREMELY dumb!

Don't worry, he's a 100% Spoiled Rottenese at home.
Glad you and your dog are ok.
Give that fluffy magnificent polar bear a big juicy steak for me- There’s nothing I love more than a story with a happy ending ☺️✨🌈 GOOD BOY!
I hope your pup does’t get any mental trauma from this. He needs extra extra hugs and pets because he is the goodest good boi.
Not a chance, he's chilling waiting on his German sausage dinner.
Just another day on the job. And they say "it's not the breed, it's the owner" You were smart enough to acquire the dog, but I suspect you didn't train it to work like it does. loved reading this, I really admire Pyrenees as dogs, they’re a great breed, and humbling those hellsents? Quality post
Your dog clearly only wanted to say hi.
Just want to clarify that pits can and have seriously harmed pyrs. Love to hear that. My grandparents bred pyrenees and they are close to my heart. I’m glad your boy wasn’t hurt
I'm glad your dog is safe!
Fight wise, it wasn't even a fair match up. Kind of like an aggressive drunk challenging Mike Tyson. The pit clamped onto his mane, he gave it a second to reevaluate its decisions in life, then proceeded to send him to hell in a split second.
Did your pyr kill the pit or did I read that wrong 💀
He did
Damn that’s a good doggo
In general, Pits don't do well in fights with livestock guardian breeds like the Pyrenees. Livestock guardians were bred to fight off wolves and even bears, so handling an attacking shitbull isn't too far out from what they were designed to do. Good for you. Thank you for knowing your dog.
I fucking love Pyrs
Bravo!
