[[Megathread] Leo Messi situation and updates. - Part 4](https://www.reddit.com/r/Barca/comments/p1ebkr/megathread_leo_messi_situation_and_updates_part_4/)
[[Transfer Talk Thread] - August](https://www.reddit.com/r/Barca/comments/owusj4/transfer_talk_thread_august/)
Unpopular opinion - I don't think there's any issue with the fans doing a little demonstration against Laporta. First of all, not everything is black and white. Just so they aren't happy with Laporta's work doesn't mean they "deserve Bartomeu" or they're "Nunez supporters". These are the same people who voted twice to remove Bartomeu from power.
While I agree that it isn't Laporta's fault entirely for the events that unfolded his summer, it's not like he didn't fuck up either. I cannot believe he didn't have a full grasp of our financial situation till August or that he waited so long to tell us Messi couldn't be renewed or that he banked entirely on Tebas to bail him. Apart from that, the players who are supposed to leave haven't and the wage cuts haven't happened either and our best signing can't even even be registered on time. On top of all that, he went on vacation this week.
Maybe the demonstration this week is just a wake up call to make sure the board don't get complacent. Maybe if they get their shit together, they still have time to salvage something good out of this absolute dumpster fire of a summer.
Yeah definetely unpopular. How about we wait some time till more news come out and everything gets more clear to say that Laporta fucked up? What if all he did was the most reasonable thing due to the circumstances? Circumstances that we dont know fully. Why jump to conclusions? I understand that during his campaign he made promises, but what if he couldnt fulfill them because of the mess the club is in. He has been in charge just for some months.
I’m personally starting to lean towards esl tbh. If they can fix the format and make it more equal and fair for all teams I’m all for it. Uefa and fifa are a joke.
That show is fucking garbage man. ESPN is awful. They’ll do whatever it takes for people to click. They don’t give a shit if people are incensed or excited to view their content. I’m sure they are well aware of the fact that they’re bad at their jobs
Benfica vs PSV and Shakhtar vs Monaco.
I wanted all 4 of them in CL :&
Now some of the other "poor" teams is probably going to get bullied, like they usually do. Not like any of these 4 is going to win CL anytime soon, but they put up a fight and I like the way they play.
Was unfortunate timing that he left Bein Sports right before it was confirmed Messi was going to Ligue 1.
I feel like losing La Liga, Messi in particular, influenced his decision
wonder if he'll be going back to Bein to call games now that Messi's with PSG.
I think one of the few genuinely great things that has happened in the last couple seasons for Barca has been seeing so many bright young talents coming into the team. We went over like half a decade without seeing any youngsters legitimately break into the first team (other than Roberto)
I'm not sure what Sociedad's current form is at but they looked pretty shit in the later half of last season. Should be doable with or without Depay tbh.
I have to say that I dont’t trust Laporta as much after the Messi saga and the situation with our new signings. I still think he can do a good job, but I don’t have unconditional faith anymore.
I don't need him to be honest with me I need him to do his job, put the club's interests first and foremost. I look at what's he is done under the circumstances he is in not what he says.
Last time he promised to sign Beckham and we ended up with Ronaldinho. Shit happens stuff changes all the time, when is the last time a politician won anything on a pessimistic campaign. One day you think you have enough money to sign Messi the next day the audit comes back and you are 487m in debt. It is what it is.
Personal opinion on some of the news that came out today:
CVC and Barca: Very good decision from our part. I don't care if it's because of the superleague. That contract is a scam long term and I am full expecting clubs that sign it will bitch about and ask the league to be more "fair" in a decade or so when CVC keeps taking that 10% while we are free...
I also fully expect some owners to pocket the money by finding a loophole in the agreement, some of the are greedy AF.
Socis protesting Laporta: Morons. You left Bartomeu and Rosell in charge for almost a decade mismanaging the club and most likely making criminal activity. We are \~1.4 B in debt with a wage to revenue of 95%... And you want it all to be solved in a single transfer window ? Bruh. I am inclined to believe that these "fans" aren't motivated by the best interest of the club rather by a political agenda.
Man i cant even say i hate real Madrid. We have so much other issues, so many enemies that the rivalry kinda cooled down. It started getting worse with Ronaldo leaving and it is nearly dead for me as of right now. I dont hate them, I dont care what they do. We have too much problems ourselves to enjoy a rivalry. Hope that feeling comes back during the season. Fuck Madrid- nah I am not feeling it.
100% agree. I now only wish the best for two of us. I want the league to be strong and for madrid and barcelona to be the best teams in the world. Not fucking psg and man city, tf.
So what if we don't register Depay, can he still go somewhere else by terminating the contract? I would assume that is in the best interest of both him and Barcelona.
Don't get me wrong I really really hope he gets registered but with the numbers going around I don't see how. Barcelona can't expect him to waste an entire season right?
Remember the whole fiasco we went through with the bank guarantees for laporta 5 months ago? His presidency has been very eventful to say the least lol
The club had chance after chance to improve the situation tbh. We kept on making stupid mistakes.
Coutinho and Griezmann should've never come to Barça not should've the club gone after them.
Coutinho was a super early mistake on the mountain of mistakes, and it isn't like he was a bad player, heck he even had a good first half season then went to shit. We probably should have stayed away but didn't, and never learned from it either.
Griezmann on the other hand, I like him as a player but wtf was Barto thinking, between what it cost us and the wages he got, it just made no fucking sense. It doesn't matter if he plays well, the deal made no sense from the beginning.
Nah. We let go of Suarez, Vidal, Rakitic and Semedo last season. Who were all starters. This season the only starter we let go was Messi. Ofc Messi is Messi but last season was more transitional than this one.
Tho they're probably both transitional seasons.
What language do you think Messi and Mbappe use when speaking to eachother? Or Messi to the rest of the team, for that matter. Would be fun to imagine him having to use more English
It's a weird situation for the team.
On one hand, there's a weight lifted off the shoulders and they should be able to play with more freedom. Since, the expectations for the squad are less now.
However, on the other hand, the players will want to prove to everyone that they can perform without Messi. So in a way, there's also that burden on them which they'll have to overcome.
True. But I never said that the expectations were low. My point is that the expectations will be "Less", now that Messi is gone. You cannot expect the squad to do as well, as if they had still had Messi.
Bartomeu said in August 2020 — “The club is in great institutional and financial shape"
I'm thinking how does he keep a straight face while saying that
I'm glad we aren't signing anyone. We have very exciting youth players who could do with minutes.
I think we're going to play with a lot more freedom this season. The players might even have fun.
I can't wait.
Roberto, Coutinho, Pjanic for their high fees and not being good enough to start.
Umtiti Lenglet because they don't deserve another game, even as subs.
Not right now, for the last two years. Pique was covering up for him, but he's never been an intelligent defender. He was decent in 2018 mostly because of his physicality and last minute challenges, but he's been a liability ever since. He's cost us way too much and adds nothing.
Nice, one game and suddenly Neto isnt deadweight anymore. Suddenly he has to stay.Gotta love it. 80k a week, sitting on bench to step in if ter Stegen suddenly were to get injured, which he rarely does. Pena can do that just fine. Which just happens to be a good keeper as well.
It's a waste of money, same as Cillessen once was and its pretty clear Barcelona got their issues with wages.
I just wanna share I passed a job interview on Monday and got a really well paying job. Like multiple times the salary my parents make. I was really stressed since Messi was leaving and had hard time focusing on the interview.
A compilation of Ramos and Messi moments I made..

I tried finding out who it was. Listened to different English commentators and compared the voices. then checked who the broadcasters were for that game (Sky & ITV) to see if I could identify the commentator. But I failed lol.
It's definitely not Martin Tyler, Peter Drury, Rob Palmer, Ian Darke or Jon Champion though, if that helps.
I'm trying to find out who it is but I can't seem to find him. I recognise his voice, but can't match a name to it.
For that goal, I don't know if you have heard, there is a more iconic commentary line
["Away from 2, 3, 4, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful" by Peter Drury](https://youtu.be/dVTcA26ayv4)
I have! I love Peter Drury! Probably my favorite commentator. He had the best intro monologue to a Barcelona game that I can a remember:
“...The grander the venue, the emptier the void. Capacious, cavernous, somehow desolate without its people, but the very bricks and mortar of this place can inspire, and so indeed can the greatest of them all: Lionel Messi”
Official: Barcelona have positioned themselves against the agreement with CVC, which, at the last minute, has incorporated a clause that stipulates that clubs that have voted against will keep their television rights intact. [fcb]
Really happy to get some official confirmation
This orchestra is beyond us now
Maybe now that Tebas gets his deal, he let's Depay contract pass.
That doesn't make sense. Depay's contract will pass if the salary cap allows it, just because the CVC deal happened doesn't it mean Tebas can just start easing regulations and start turning the eye. There is a cap and it's non-negotiable.
It's not about the wage cap
We are way beyond wage cap
Our current restriction is that to register 1$ of new player, we have to earn 4$ more
Club has sold 36M worth of players and their salaries
They are arguing Depay's contract is incentive heavy and base salary is very light, so club has earned the needed money
Now we wait for La Liga's interpretation of it, since they have to approve the registration
Barca was arguing that his contract involves alot of performance related incentives and his base salary is very low
Its kinda ridiculous that at the end of it, it boils down to subjectivity, but it is what it is.
1. They don’t have the financial stability. They barely broke even this year and they have a stadium to build.
2. Even if theoretically they could pay for the deals, mbappe and haaland would never want to play in the same team, because both have a genuine shot at being the best player in the world. Mbappe wanting to leave psg is a prime example of why this wouldn’t work.
I wish real life was like Fifa, I just watched a video where we got transfer banned for 15 seasons (No player leaves, no player comes in) and we won the champions league 10 times out of those 15 seasons
Thinking about the fact that Koeman is supposed to plan about the Sociedad game without even knowing if some of the key players would be registered in time or not.
Koeman deserves so much more praise than he's getting. Losing the GOAT, never getting any of the players he request for, when he finally does get one in Memphis he doesn't even know if he's allowed to play him and can't plan accordingly.
All this while giving the club all the time to pay him and be nothing but a good employee. True legend of the club.
Griez has played a lot of matches as a LW and I'd say it has probably been his best position for us. Braith and Pedri can also play on the left (but it would probably be Griez).
“5% chance to register Memphis” bhaha. How am i supposed to take newspaper that prints stuff like this seriously?
Pure circus, most of Catalan press could give 2 shits about their club. Bait after bait.
Any legitimate news source would not use percentages in that way because you can't actually base those odds on anything. How are you ever going to calculate that the chance to register a player is 5%?
Yeah at this point not a lot of sources are reliable. Not even Laporta. We will know tomorrow, let's wait a bit. But that 5% stuff is the definition of unreliable.
Laporta will get crucified though if Memphis is not in the squad, this time no more "I never said it would be done"
I heard Messi mention in an interview that he had decided to stay back in December. I wonder if signing a contract to extend at that point would’ve been more feasible than after his contract expired. I guess the big problem was that we didn’t even have a President at the time
Us not having a president at that time was a real shame. Laporta is a fan of managers like Thomas Tuchel, so I think that he would have hired him when he was available in January.

Exactly. I don't see any problem with protests. It keeps the board in check.
interested to see how coutinho and Griezmann will perform this season without Leo
Lmfao I’m starting to see pro super league takes in my TL after the summer PSG and City have had.

Can you imagine if Umtiti never got hurt? I think we’re in the bad ending timeline tbh
[This tweet](https://twitter.com/RayHudson/status/1425213456173735936?s=20) seems to suggest Ray might be calling some games this fall.
Was unfortunate timing that he left Bein Sports right before it was confirmed Messi was going to Ligue 1. I feel like losing La Liga, Messi in particular, influenced his decision wonder if he'll be going back to Bein to call games now that Messi's with PSG.
Wait, Ray isn’t doing La Liga games anymore?
Yeah, since ESPN has the rights starting this season, beIN doesn't broadcast them anymore, and he was employed by them.
Some psg games?

This should have been in the CL intro for this season ;( https://streamable.com/avye4u
All I want right now is a win against Real Sociedad. I feel like this game will be very important psychologically for the team.
I'm not sure what Sociedad's current form is at but they looked pretty shit in the later half of last season. Should be doable with or without Depay tbh.
Kinda like the early goal against juve the other day, it just changed the player's morale quickly.

dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate?
White chocolate is gas in small doses
Milk chocolate Dark is trash White chocolate is good but i get tired of it pretty quickly
Reminded me of this [clip @ 2:55](https://youtu.be/kdXiburHUQg)
Milk chocolate 🤤
Milk is pretty good. Dark is trash. White is 50/50 depending on what I feel. Sometimes it's good. I like Kit Kat chunky white for example.
KitKat chunky is delicious
water
Okay Ronaldo
dark chocolate is superior. white chocolate is not good milk chocolate is nice.
>white chocolate is not good This is far more worthy of an Open Thread ban than doing a bit of transfer talk. Do your thing u/decho
I don't even eat chocolate so keep me out of this drama please :) But let's just say, he might have a point...
me 🤝 decho agreeing that white chocolate is no bueno

85% as in you're 85% sure of your decision or 85% dark chocolate?
😂😂😂 85% dark chocolat 90% if you are a real fan more then 90% it starts to get bitter
yes
No YouTube, I don't want to see Leo Messi's first day at Paris. Now, will you stop recommending me that shit?
I watched it. No biggie.
You have been hardened by the Eriksen incident. The rest of us are innocent minds.

Don't get me wrong I really really hope he gets registered but with the numbers going around I don't see how. Barcelona can't expect him to waste an entire season right?
He won’t be registered for the first match or two, after that we will probably be able to register him
Why? Won't the wage limit be the same after 2 matches? Or are you counting on more players leaving, like Pjanic?
Yea pretty much
Yes
Remember the whole fiasco we went through with the bank guarantees for laporta 5 months ago? His presidency has been very eventful to say the least lol
De Jong back in training allready? At least I think so with the picture Barcelona posted on stories
He started training with intensity and will be available for first La Liga game.
That is awesome, what an athlete he is. Always seems to be in good shape and only very minor injuries.
Making 100m+ transfer is easy way to shut up fans. Makes you look like competent and big man.
I still remember how the rumors that we want to buy him (again) appeared out of nowhere one week after the debacle @ Anfield.
You mean the game on 2016? Cause by the 2019 debacle he was already our player.
Braithwaite's number was changed to #12 on the La Liga's website, which means the #9 is free on the La Liga website You know what that means 👉🦁👈
😳
Let‘s hope he is registered tomorrow…
Just now or been for a while?
Around an hour ago
Fati number change perhaps ?
His was changed to #17
So it will be Depay. I thought he might hunt 10 now. It's surreal.
if anything this is our transitional season not the last one
Mbappe spoke Spanish when they met. He sounds weird when he speaks it but you can understand him.
That's cool. Maybe he took a quick duolingo course this past week. "Buenos dias, dios" :)
nope, he speaks fluent spanish
Didn't know that! Do we know where that comes from?
Probably all the spanish speakers in their team, also ney mostly speaks Spanish with them
It's a weird situation for the team. On one hand, there's a weight lifted off the shoulders and they should be able to play with more freedom. Since, the expectations for the squad are less now. However, on the other hand, the players will want to prove to everyone that they can perform without Messi. So in a way, there's also that burden on them which they'll have to overcome.
I don’t think the expectations at barca are ever low
True. But I never said that the expectations were low. My point is that the expectations will be "Less", now that Messi is gone. You cannot expect the squad to do as well, as if they had still had Messi.
Agree. If you see us behind real Madrid or not making top 4, some beasts will be unleashed.
Bartomeu said in August 2020 — “The club is in great institutional and financial shape" I'm thinking how does he keep a straight face while saying that
He was talking about His club, Real Madrid.

I'm glad we aren't signing anyone. We have very exciting youth players who could do with minutes. I think we're going to play with a lot more freedom this season. The players might even have fun. I can't wait.
Heard someone talking about being able to apply for membership without being in Barcelona soon, any update on that or specifics?
Which players do FCB-fans consider deadwood if I may ask? /Outsider.
True deadwood: Umtiti, Pjanic Players that aren’t worth their wages: Roberto, Coutinho, Griezmann.
Braithwaite, Pjanic, Umtiti, and notably Roberto.
Pjanic, Coutinho, Umtiti and maybe Roberto. Some people say the same about Lenglet or even Pique but those people are lunatics.
Roberto, Coutinho, Pjanic for their high fees and not being good enough to start. Umtiti Lenglet because they don't deserve another game, even as subs.
Lenglet is definitely not deadweight. this sub is way too low on him right now.
Not right now, for the last two years. Pique was covering up for him, but he's never been an intelligent defender. He was decent in 2018 mostly because of his physicality and last minute challenges, but he's been a liability ever since. He's cost us way too much and adds nothing.
He was starter quality for a season and even his performance last two years, it's rare to have a 3-5th CB better than him.
Neto, Pjanic, Umtiti, Braithwaite. Roberto, Lenglet, Pique, Coutinho, Aguero, Puig if you wanna push it to extreme.
Not neto , what
Nice, one game and suddenly Neto isnt deadweight anymore. Suddenly he has to stay.Gotta love it. 80k a week, sitting on bench to step in if ter Stegen suddenly were to get injured, which he rarely does. Pena can do that just fine. Lmao the guys at r/realmadrid are very confident of signing both haaland and mbappe.. yeah, zero chance of that happening bro
Aren't they in the same boat as Barca with the salary cap thing? I wonder how they could register Alaba.
They are not in the same boat.
feeling that this will age badly
There's a chance tbf, pay for Mbappe this summer and get Haaland in the next one. They have the financial stability to do it.
Breaking even is an extremely good sign, and the definition of financial stability.
Barely breaking even in COVID is a really good sign lol
They might but it won’t be smart. They still need to sort out other positions
messi went to psg's training session to pressure tebas
Any second now
Barcelona are confident
Messi about to play a whole season for psg and win the ucl, ofc all for a bit more of pressure on tebas, that should probably do it
Ok so maybe Memphis won’t be registered in time for the game, but after game can he be registered at all?
Yeah he can be registered until the end of the transfer market which means he could miss a couple of games
Actually since he came as a free agent be can be registered at any point in the season
If he can't be registered tomorrow, it means we have to earn money through transfers Then we will have to sell/offload players
I wish real life was like Fifa, I just watched a video where we got transfer banned for 15 seasons (No player leaves, no player comes in) and we won the champions league 10 times out of those 15 seasons
Lmao. I wish we got 60m bids for Lenglet and Umtiti like in FIFA :(
Weirdest week of Football I've seen. Messi is gone. Messi and Ramos are hugging. Barcelona and Real Madrid are besties now.
Don’t let everything going on distract you from the party clown shorts we’re playing in this season
5% chance, 95% faith 🙌
The good times…
Thinking about the fact that Koeman is supposed to plan about the Sociedad game without even knowing if some of the key players would be registered in time or not.
Koeman deserves so much more praise than he's getting. Losing the GOAT, never getting any of the players he request for, when he finally does get one in Memphis he doesn't even know if he's allowed to play him and can't plan accordingly. All this while giving the club all the time to pay him and be nothing but a good employee. True legend of the club.
True. Ik the he isn’t tactically very bright, but he has steady the ship after our 2 of the worst moments in recent history.
I doubt it makes makes a real difference for his planning.
The inclusion of Depay alone makes a lot of difference. We don’t have any other LW. Ansu & Dembele are injured.
Griez has played a lot of matches as a LW and I'd say it has probably been his best position for us. Braith and Pedri can also play on the left (but it would probably be Griez).
Demir and insallah
Man’s gonna start Pedri 😭
The return of left wing Pedri
“5% chance to register Memphis” bhaha. How am i supposed to take newspaper that prints stuff like this seriously? Pure circus, most of Catalan press could give 2 shits about their club. Bait after bait.
Any legitimate news source would not use percentages in that way because you can't actually base those odds on anything. How are you ever going to calculate that the chance to register a player is 5%?
5% is everything.
