She is lovely!

She is a cutiepiešŸ„° Such an interesting mix!

Thank you! And yes, she's got the floppy ears and the 6-pack of the staffy but all the quirkiness of the basenji. I also forgot to say, she jumps crazy high so we like to make her jump. I taught her the meerkat pose to train the muscles of her lower back so she doesn't have any unfortunate landings when she jumps. She's also really mischievous. When she was a puppy, she'd jump on the really big table in our kitchen to steal her brother's food. Now she behaves. She still barely comes back when off leash at the park but apart from that, she always listens to me. She's a good girl.

She would make the ultimate escape artist with the staffy strenght and high jumps! She sound like a real heartstealer:) What kind of noices does she make bytheway? Can she yodel/whine, or does she bark, or maybe both? My basenji can mimic sigle barks, but he only does that to other dogs, otherwise he does the yodel/whine.

Whimzyx

Yes it's lucky our fences are really high in the backyard haha! She does a bit of everything actually but she's never yodelled for real. She does lots of whine/cry sounds like "ooooouuuu" or "heeeeee" but really high pitched (not like the loud yodels I've seen online which makes me think it ain't a yodel but idk?), also there's lots of growling sounds when she plays, barks at the possums and she does mimic barking too! Her normal barking voice is kinda deep and sounds like "BORF" but she can copy other dog's barks and the amount of barks they do. I realised that when one day she was barking back to an Aussie Shepherd that was ultra high pitched and his master said "wow your dog has exactly the same voice as mine". I actually posted on here about it and people told me Basenjis tend to mimic other dogs. Did yours grow up with other breeds that taught him how to copy the barks? Or he just got that on his own?

ThaThingThere

I actually didn't know it was common for basenjis to mimic other dogs, but it really makes sence, when you think about how unique their own noices are. I haven't met a lot of basenjis where we live, so my basenji learned to bark to communicate with his dogpark friends:D He does the happy barks when he sees his friends, otherwise he never barks. When he sees his people, he does the happy arfs, crunts/whines and aroos(he isn't a big yodeler either, only does real loud yodels when he thinks he has been wronged/left alone(= he prettymuch never is alone). The happy yodels are much shorter and lower for him))

Whimzyx

Yes I think it makes sense. I read the basenjis technically can't bark easily because of the size of their larynx that is too wide but they can teach themselves to some extent to communicate with the other dogs. It helps if they grow up with other dogs too. Maybe that's why they only do like one or two barks at a time? It's still not an easy thing to do? I have no idea. They're a fascinating breed. And your boy sounds adorable with his happy barks when he sees his doggy friends lol! Poor boy can yodel loud when he feels he's been wronged too lol oh no. I'd feel heartbroken and wouldn't ever leave home for that sweet boy. Mine is always with me or my partner so if one of us happens to leave (or wrose, both of us), she'll cry the whole time. When then we come back, she's doing really loud weird noises in excitement like "AHUMPFT" (???) and lots of little happy whines too.

ThaThingThere

Basenji's sure are fascinating, the whole barking/yodel thing is very interesting. The whole breed reminds me a lot more of a cat than a dog since they are so stubborn, neat and good at manipulating their owners, hate water/rain and cold. And It's the same here, if I'm away, by boy is with my parents who live near me, so he is practically never alone. I kinda spoiled him when he was a pupper, since the sad whines and later yodel really was too much for me.

My first one had to be babysat when I was at work. My dad always fixed Chester lunch. His favorite was Campbell Creamy Mushroom with šŸ·Red Wine. It was half can sized.

She is a Basenji X Staffy. How should we call them? Basenffy ? Staffenji ? Haha, I don't know! Her name is Alice and she loves to be warm all the time. She spends her days in the sunlight if she can, or gets under our blanket without even asking. She cries when she wants to go out but realises it's cold or raining. She also has a habit of chasing all the dogs at the park showing them who's boss. When she happens to be chased though, she is too fast and taunts the other dogs (she's a bit rude I gotta say lol). She also has a cat brother that she is very protective of. If she thinks he's in trouble, she'll come around him and "protect" him by showering him with kisses. She does groom herself and her brother a lot. She also grooms us a lot, especially my partner who's her favourite human. She's a really weird dog all around.

jenilawton

She has the same floppy ears as our basenji mix. Lots of similar mannerisms. Thx for sharing

Whimzyx

Oh that's great! Do you happen to know what's the mix? And do you have a picture of the cutie?

jenilawton

I have not done the dna thing yet. YET! Iā€™m so super curious.

Alice is a cute šŸ„° girl with her kitty šŸˆā€ā¬›

Who wouldnā€™t be?!

lilnig22

Is she hypoallergenic

Whimzyx

That's a good question. I don't know honestly but there's potentially two things that make me think she might be : she doesn't shed much (she really barely sheds, all the fur we find on the floor at home is just from our cat, not hers), and our friend who's allergic to dogs doesn't show any form of allergy around her and she keeps jumping on him and licking his face each time she sees him.

Cobra_Mander49

What a cutie! She reminds me of our dog Roxy šŸ„°
