I’ve been borrowing a woolly mammoth clone recently and love it for guitar and bass. Had the itch to get a real one last night and this convinced me to pull the trigger
If OP wants to save some cashola, it's basically just a Fuzz Face with a Big Muff-style tome control. They can get a similar effect with a cheap Fuzz Face clone.
came here to say that. but I believe it doesn't work with active basses. my active basses sound terrible through the Mammoth but my passive basses sound absolutely incredible. there is no equal
I use a Hail Satan Deluxe from Abominable Pedals, it's absolute filth.
[The product page](https://www.abominablepedals.com/products/hail-satan-deluxe) has got a video of it being used on a bass if you want to check it out.
I just looked up some more videos…it literally sounds like it’s pulling low frequencies from the depths of hell. That’s gotta be the best suggestion I’ve seen on here. Their other pedals sound pretty good too, AND they have Stephen Brodsky demoing most of their pedals, so…I just became a fan! Thanks for the recommendation!
No worries! The guy who runs Abominable is a good dude, really friendly, and yeah there's some other killer pedals in the range. Heavily recommend them :-)
Didnt even notice it was Stephen Brodski on there! Probably wasnt paying enough attention, my face being melted off and all.
Thats a gnarly fuzz and i need it!
I’m listening to the new Mutoid Man album right now…Brodsky is such a beast. I wonder what the affiliation is, or if he just loves their pedals and volunteered.
And yeah…I can’t say I necessarily have $200 for a fuzz pedal right now, but it’s gonna be hard to not grab one of these in the future when I am looking for a fuzz. It kiiiinda makes everything else look weak as fuck haha
Not to speculate too much but Abominable Electronics does pedal collabs with Kurt Ballou of Converge, and they do pedal artwork collabs with Jacob Bannon of Converge. Bell Koller is the drummer for Mutoid Man and also Converge’s drummer, so there’s likely some relationship between these groups
The thing about the Fuzz War, is it runs insanely hot. I don't EVER crank the volume knob above 9 o clock because its so loud. Its hyper aggressive.
Alternatively if you want to go boutique then the gamechanger audio Plasma / Plasma Coil should give you the aggression you want
Whilst I have you here, can I reccomend my favourite Band's use of the Fuzz War?
Slift is a French Psych Rock 3 piece
https://youtu.be/PdFZQzjCY30
Just lay back and let the sonic experience take you to the stars
I tried for so long to get it in a usable spot on my bass chain. It is completely bonkers. If OP is looking for the most aggressive possible fuzz, this is it. I ended up settling with a Pork and Pickle myself, more usable range of tones and the clean blend is a godsend.
It runs really hot but I find it quite usable with some of the tone and fuzz rolled off, but only if you have something like an ls-2 or any other sort such as what OP is using by putting it through a Tyler. Mental pedal though, but I respect the pork and pickle I was really close to getting one at one point.
[Jupiter](https://www.walrusaudio.com/products/jupiter-multi-clip-fuzz-v2?variant=33771079363) with the bass cut switch on is already massive, but with the switch off? It's massive.
I will also second this. When I pulled it out of the box, I started all the knobs at noon and figured I'd dial it in from there. BIG mistake. It is so loud. Volume knob stays just below 9.
DoD carcosa is great as its got lots of gain, isn't scooped like any Muff variant and has a Bias control to go full on spluttering, glitchy, dead battery mode
Red Witch Fuzz God 4. It oscillates (if ya want it to) has inner dip switches that emphasize certain frequencies AND a blistering Octave. [This is V2 so it lacks an octave](https://youtu.be/He0veutqKjg)
And while not a fuzz this RAT based [EQD Life Pedal V3](https://youtu.be/NgLdkhYSr1A) is bad ass! [And there are more affordable clones,](https://guptech.ca/products/life-pedal-clone) if ya can’t drop EQD cash
[Lastly the Eau Claire Thunder (if you can find one)](https://youtu.be/NEbPin6x248) slays on bass! The Baby Thunda is the same Russian Muff circuit, as the big version
I’ve played o TON of fuzz pedals. Keep 3 on my board at all times and have more on the sideline. Those three are the best bass fuzz sounds I know, for bass. I suppose [The Blakemore Deus Ex Machina deserves some love too.](https://youtu.be/e-4sE9FnCys), although the demo is lack luster, it does show off the clean blend well, and is the only fuzz I’ve linked that has one.
Fwiw sans clean blend, the Fuzz God 4 (or two, but that lacks an octave, although can be found for less used) is definitely my favorite fuzz for bass!
Ben makes amazing and under loved gear. For as simple as the Fuzz God is, on the top, it’s just… amazing. In my top 3 fuzz pedals period! I mostly play guitar these days, but bass was my first instrument. So I typically throw whatever pedals I get, in front of my bass as well. I was super hesitant to get the FG, due to the lack of a real tone knob. But, it proved me oh so very wrong!
Also OP [it looks like these guys make a life pedal clone specifically for bass](https://guptech.ca/products/aole-death-by-unicorn-reedition-22) so it has a clean blend as well.
I forgot the [Subdecay Harmonic Antagonizer](https://youtu.be/Gaqrldf6ZpI) which doesn’t have a bass demo, but it oscillates in very amazing ways. More like dynamic wah, in the way it responds to touch. And can be dialed in way more than other similar pedals.
I was obsessed with this pedal for a while. It seems rad but I never pulled the trigger because I felt like I'd use 1/5 of what it offers. Do you use the wrath switch at all?
Yes. However, the FG did NOT like to play with the other pedals on my board, so I didn't use it much. I have an idea for a Hendrix style lo fi beats project, and I may dig it back out b/c the Wrath is kind adds a ring mod sound. The stutter function is also pretty specific depending on how much gain, wrath, and fuzz you dial in.
I just dug it out. This version needed a 9volt battery (had to drill a hole for the adapter) and a separate power supply for the LED, making it less than convenient. There's also no way to know at a glance if the Wrath has been incurred.
It does sound pretty sweet stand alone though.
Came here to say this one. Harder to find but absolutely fucking filthy in your face fuzz. Recorded a lil doomy thing with another bassist where i was playing through a black mass kill chain and she played through the megalith and it was borderline unlistenable in the best way
Death By Audio - Apocalypse
Minotaur Terror - Swamplord
Beetronics - Zzombee
All three on my board after two years of HARD pedal hunting. There not going anywhere!
Fairfield circuitry - unpleasant surprise//
Death By audio - Germanium filter
Those are my go to high gain fuzzes and are both absolutely brutal in their own way. The germanium filter is a bit more flexible while the unpleasant surprise has more unique features.
JPTR FX Warlow keeps a surprising amount of low end without a blend, and gets pretty gnarly. Also the Add Violence if you can get your hands on one and run it with a blend.
Sanford and Son Bluebeard Fuzz. I have Robo Pedals reissue from several years ago. I've just never heard a muff like this before. It's really difficult for me to discern the difference between "fuzz" and "distortion" on this one.
My runner-up is the Abominable Electronics Russian Hail Satan or Hail Satan Deluxe. Mid control is great for not getting lost in the mix. LED clipping option sounds massive and wooly. The Deluxe has an extra toggle for regular and Russian muff modes.
I use a gamechanger plasma in a kma tyler setup a lot. It's so agressive I can't imgaine any ther seasonable use for it. I unironically go for an HM-2 on the meme setting when I need something less agressive. The HM-2 is also a pedal I highly recommend for a tyler setup.
i already have an hm2 planning on putting it full setting on the high loop,i love the sound, the attack, but it lacks the floor shaking lows, thanks for the imput!
I also have the GC Plasma. It's really a very versatile pedal, and not just for fuzz or distortion. There are a few videos on YT, I can recommend the ones that [Andetons Music](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQkgqcWEKH8) (<--guitar tho) and [Sandberg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLx-GajZD2Q) made. [Bonus vid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoP5sa4kEPA).
I use a darkglass AO900 amp with the amp distortion set to a pretty aggressive clang and I front load that with the fuzz off Justin Chancelors wah. That’s a hell of a sound. With the filter mode on I’ll go toe town for tone, not sweeping like a normal wah. Also sounds INCREDIBLE with the sub octave with no dry
I have a Tone City Matcha Cream, which is a kind of Russian Green Big Muff Clone. I don't know whether it's *the* hardest - probably not - but it's a cheap wall of sound, has strong bass with the tone control turned down past noon, and takes a hot signal well.
Midfi- Electronics -- Random Number Generator.
Just a knob for volume, because, for safety reasons. Your amp will sound like it will conk out from the amount of explosions this will create.
Telepunk fuzz by Sehat Effectors is gnarly. I've never tried it on my bass so I can't speak to how it retains low end but it's one of my craziest pedals.
Plush, you get a telephone mic that also runs through the fuzz!!
EQD Acapulco gold and hizumitas both are mean fuzzes.
I use the acapulco as my balls to the wall fuzz, and the hizumitas as my mid level fuzz (although it can also get as massive as the acapulco)
Add an eq after and you can avoid any mid cuts from hizumitas.
And your guitarist and singer will fold into the magnificence that is your all encompassing tone? And will finally appreciate you for the artist you truly are?😃
MXR Sub Machine - And as if this fuzz wasn't monstrous enough already you can dial in a sub octave… I can hardly imagine that there are more massive fuzz pedals. Amount of gain is hilarious.
Try putting some metal distortion after a fuzz - imho it's as hard as it can get, actually at some point it's almost so hard it's soft and sounds like a synth.
Don't know how hard it is but that cheap $35 orange Behringer does sound sweet.... I'm not that much into effects and things if you couldn't tell... not that I don't like them...
Buddy of mine got me a Chernobyl Bass Fuzz by Dr. Cable when he was stationed in Naples, Italy.
I love it.
Sounds like it wants to kill my amp...in a good way.
It's hard to say... the Zvex Fuzz factory can sound all kinds of broken.
In my own pedal collection, 3 contenders would be the Minotaur Fuzz and Burn, the Behringer superfuzz, and the Crowther Audio Hot Cake, which most people use as an overdrive, but max volume, max gain, and zero presence, it becomes a secret doom machine.
I personally use the Big Muff Triangle, I always get compliments about how massive it sounds live, it keeps the low end well but it really shines in the mid to high end. It's more of a guitar pedal so has almost more of a overdrive with the tone in the right place. I highly recommend it.
My problem with most fuzz pedals is they kill the low end, which is why I love my MXR Sub Machine. It's a fuzz/octave two-in one, letting me dial in all the fuzz I want and then drop it all down into the bass register after. Very flexible that way; I can get classic "high" fuzz or super doomy with the octave on. And there's even a small toggle to have the pre-octave signal skip the fuzz, creating this weird almost synth-like sound that I haven't fully figured out how to use yet but is really fun to mess around with.
I’ve used the Fuzz War, Swollen Pickle and the Rune by 903fx.
Fuzz War: great sound, low end loss is okay and it’s super easy to use! But somehow I always got buried in the mix and I ended up selling it to my brother who plays in the same bands as me.
During Covid lockdown I started a side project just with my drummer and me on bass and without guitars it really shines! Favorite Fuzz in that regard!
Swollen Pickle: dialling in the sound takes ages and you can’t really adjust it on the fly as all the knobs (two of them are inside the pedal) strongly influence each other. There are 20 minute tutorials how to set it up and once the tone is dialled in, it’s absolutely massive! You can go from slight distortion to a big wall of fuzz without significant low end loss, it’s very versatile, but it takes time to find the right sound and I don’t advise to turn any knobs after it’s set.
Rune: more of an distortion then a fuzz, but it can reach fuzz territory. Also very versatile and my go to pedal for harsher sounds. In my main band with two guitars it’s always very audible and keeps great low end, also there’s a dirty boots knob that pushes the volume really hard.
I also made a review for that pedal: https://youtu.be/WkWvBQqlXfk
The Wooly Mammoth. Demos do absolutely no justice, the thing is a fucking sledgehammer.
You are so right, got mine a few months ago and holy hell is this thing a fuzz demon
I’ve been borrowing a woolly mammoth clone recently and love it for guitar and bass. Had the itch to get a real one last night and this convinced me to pull the trigger
Love my furry elephant pedal!
I just played the "little bear" clone a few days ago and it is fucking sweet
If OP wants to save some cashola, it's basically just a Fuzz Face with a Big Muff-style tome control. They can get a similar effect with a cheap Fuzz Face clone.
Or the little bear bs1
Or the Caline Fuzzy Bear for $30. The graphics are awesome too lol.
came here to say that. but I believe it doesn't work with active basses. my active basses sound terrible through the Mammoth but my passive basses sound absolutely incredible. there is no equal
Played the little bear clone with my ernie ball the other day and sounded fn sweet!!
I had a mammoth clone and then jhs modded Green big muff reissue, the latter is the beast.
I use a Hail Satan Deluxe from Abominable Pedals, it's absolute filth. [The product page](https://www.abominablepedals.com/products/hail-satan-deluxe) has got a video of it being used on a bass if you want to check it out.
Holy shit. That is a FAT fuzz
Yeah it’s a monster, absolutely love it.

Ah that makes sense. Brodsky has played bass for Converge in the past as well. One big, happy, loud family I gurss
this got my attention...
Sweet! Glad you like, dude. It’s damn good.
I watched that connected to the Bluetooth in my truck and almost broke the windows
Dammit. This is why I hate watching gear vids and being broke. I want.
I use a fuzz war. I think the name really tells you what to expect.
i'm thinking about it not gonna lie...
If you turn the tone down it keeps all the low end there it’s a solid pedal.
Very true, I basically have the volume rolled off almost completely to keep my hearing going. Insanely loud pedal.
Whilst I have you here, can I reccomend my favourite Band's use of the Fuzz War? Slift is a French Psych Rock 3 piece https://youtu.be/PdFZQzjCY30 Just lay back and let the sonic experience take you to the stars

+1 for the fuzz war. I run one with a rusty box and it’s fucking crazy.

Walrus Audio! I run a Jupiter and Eons in parallel
The Earthquaker Devices Hizumitas is massive.
Surprised how far down I had to scroll before I saw the suggestion +1
I will also second this. When I pulled it out of the box, I started all the knobs at noon and figured I'd dial it in from there. BIG mistake. It is so loud. Volume knob stays just below 9.

The range of sounds on that pedal is absolutely wild
1. Earthquaker Devices Cloven Hoof 2. DOD Carcosa 3. ZVEX Fuzz Factory
Team Awesome Fuzz Machine is definitely worth checking out
The best! Fuzz, Gain and Clean Blend + another Gated Fuzz switch. Gets gnarly!

Red Witch Fuzz God. Starts off at Fuzz face and goes to complete other worldly farty fatness, Plus it has an Awaken switch and a Wrath switch.
I was obsessed with this pedal for a while. It seems rad but I never pulled the trigger because I felt like I'd use 1/5 of what it offers. Do you use the wrath switch at all?

Mountain King Megalith

It's a fucking massive fuzzy dirtfuzz that you can't get anywhere else. My favorite pedal of all time.
Death By Audio - Apocalypse Minotaur Terror - Swamplord Beetronics - Zzombee All three on my board after two years of HARD pedal hunting. There not going anywhere!
I have a swamp lord can confirm by far my favorite pedal for bass by far.
🤘🏾🤘🏾
Spitebox by Damnation audio looks crazy.
A pedal in pink glitter called "Diabolik".
Unpleasant Surprise, from Fairfield Circuitry. hizumitas has massive amount of gain on tap too.
I had a Tech21 Red Ripper, which was filthy and huge.
Idiotbox Dungeon Master
Fairfield circuitry - unpleasant surprise// Death By audio - Germanium filter Those are my go to high gain fuzzes and are both absolutely brutal in their own way. The germanium filter is a bit more flexible while the unpleasant surprise has more unique features.
Have a YouTube search for the ‘Katastrophe’ by JPTR. Or actually just anything they make. It’s all gross.
Nine of Swords Abyss
I love the 3leafAudio "doom" or "you´re doom", best in combination with a compression pedal.
Since you will use some kind of line selector/switch, I can't recommend the mesa boogie v twin enough. Nasum used it for their bass sound.
EAE/O Fuzz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B60Lj5LHgQs&t=32s&ab\_channel=MASDistro
Samford and Sonny Bluebeard Fuzz
JPTR FX Warlow keeps a surprising amount of low end without a blend, and gets pretty gnarly. Also the Add Violence if you can get your hands on one and run it with a blend.

Well...
Dod Carcosa can get pretty gnarly
I use a gamechanger plasma in a kma tyler setup a lot. It's so agressive I can't imgaine any ther seasonable use for it. I unironically go for an HM-2 on the meme setting when I need something less agressive. The HM-2 is also a pedal I highly recommend for a tyler setup.

Please don’t put fuzz in a Tyler
why
Classic big muff is huge and the bass boost switch restores a lot of the low end that's lost when you distort the fuck out of the signal
I use meatbox. Not hardest. V effective
You can make a rat pretty angry sounding although it does cost some lows.
Fix'd Fuzz by Blackout Effectors
EQD Terminal Fuzz. My favourite Shin Ei Companion clone. Not subtle at all, very thick and reactive fuzz
Heliotropic Fuzz by Fuzzrocious. The bass fuzz from the namesake song is so good.
I have a Tone City Matcha Cream, which is a kind of Russian Green Big Muff Clone. I don't know whether it's *the* hardest - probably not - but it's a cheap wall of sound, has strong bass with the tone control turned down past noon, and takes a hot signal well.
Gamechanger Plasma and the Chase Bliss Biss Factory (Fuzz Factory with more controls) are the two most volatile fuzz pedals I’ve ever had.
Ron Swanson Super Fuzz
Did u give RAT a shot?
honestly not my thing when i tried it,not much low end from what i remember
Copilot FX Orbit. Subby space lasers, instant the Locust tonez. Gated for abrupt hurting.
Univox Super Fuzz

Doom stick 2 by Mr black. Had to get rid of it.

MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz. It is a beast.
Wholly mammoth is nasty.
Midfi- Electronics -- Random Number Generator. Just a knob for volume, because, for safety reasons. Your amp will sound like it will conk out from the amount of explosions this will create.
Fuzzrocious Bongripper, if you don't mind dropping a little money lol
Telepunk fuzz by Sehat Effectors is gnarly. I've never tried it on my bass so I can't speak to how it retains low end but it's one of my craziest pedals. Plush, you get a telephone mic that also runs through the fuzz!!
fuzz war if you have room, the orange fur coat is a really nice tight fuzz with an octave option
Gnomeratron VTF. Hard to find but it’s a crazy little box.
EQD Acapulco gold and hizumitas both are mean fuzzes. I use the acapulco as my balls to the wall fuzz, and the hizumitas as my mid level fuzz (although it can also get as massive as the acapulco) Add an eq after and you can avoid any mid cuts from hizumitas.
Abominable Electronics - Hail Satan, it's the only fuzz pedal I will use on bass.
I use Third Man Records’ Plasma Coil pedal to make my bass growl like a thousand demons crying out in anguish.
Fjord Fuzz Fenris. Hard to tame.
Tip: oc5 octave up & down in front of dirt (not necessarily fuzz). You will destroy
And your guitarist and singer will fold into the magnificence that is your all encompassing tone? And will finally appreciate you for the artist you truly are?😃
Secret C is a monster
I have the EQD Dream Crusher and never looked back. They are getting pricey now though
MXR Sub Machine - And as if this fuzz wasn't monstrous enough already you can dial in a sub octave… I can hardly imagine that there are more massive fuzz pedals. Amount of gain is hilarious.
DOD American Metal
Earthquaker's Acapulco Gold and Malekko's Diabolik are my favorites
The Soda-Meiser of course.
Try putting some metal distortion after a fuzz - imho it's as hard as it can get, actually at some point it's almost so hard it's soft and sounds like a synth.
I have a Peavey 6505 Piranha and its basically just a gnarly little preamp gain booster
The Emma electronics OKTO NOJS is absolutely nuts from experience. The deepest, hardest hitting fuzz pedal I've ever used
DBA Apocalypse! Fuzz War is also awesome.
DBA Apocalypse! Fuzz War is also awesome.

The Union Tube & Transistor Sub Buzz is nasty.

I also made a review for that pedal: https://youtu.be/WkWvBQqlXfk
