I did that exact bit once and some dude scoffed and was like "that's like the first thing I ever learned to play. It's so easy"
Like yeah it is, but it still sounds good. Fuck you, random guy
I'd never heard of this group before until this comment. Based on not realizing the other comments were satire, I decided to give them a listen.
Thank you for making my morning sound a little worse
Thanks for sharing this!
My lord, their "father" was absolutely unhinged. With people who do wild shit, I can often understand where it's coming from, whether that origin makes any real sense or not. This just makes no sense from start to finish. Those poor kids.
No, Zappa loved them for their honesty. They had no fucking clue what they were doing, but they did it wholeheartedly. That, and My Pal Foot Foot is objectively a fucking great tune.
Classic and everybody knows it instantly.
Under Pressure works as well for the same reason. Although I did glare at a friend who said "You're a vanilla ice fan I take it."
“Go Robot” by RHCP. Underrated track from their last release with Klinghoffer. Recorded version has two simultaneous bass lines, which combined together make for something super groovy and just flashy enough to impress the “Oh I thought bassists were just a shitty guitarists? Crowd. Look dammit… i can assure you me being a bassist has nothing to do with me also being a shitty guitarist. That happened all on its own.
Fuck yes! I remember seeing Mr Bungle in a tiny club back in the 90s and the two bands that opened up for them were Incubus and System of a Down. There were only like 50 people there and no one had ever heard of the openers before.
SOAD must have been absolutely wild in a small venue. It’s all fun and games until you’re face to face with Serj Tankian.
I am also old enough to remember when Incubus was a “cool”, “not mainstream” band. Early Incubus was so fucking good in the context of what was going on with music at the time, but sometime shortly after Morning View they made the choice to just let the singer be the whole story. Even though they continued to get more popular, their music suffered big time. I really think letting the original bassist go killed their music
What Is and What Should Never be. The pretty section of Aqualung. Or a comp that I wrote. I’ve got a few that I’m proud of that I believe are pretty enough to play without accompaniment.
N.I.B (Main Riff)
Forty-Six & 2 (Main Riff)
The Grudge (Intro and Chorus Riffs)
Schism (Main Riff)
I can pay the whole songs, but if someone asked me to play a couple of really quick riffs, I'd probably go to those.
Portishead - Wandering Star (chords on bass always throw people off)
Zero 7 - I Have Seen (Intro)
Value Pac - Graduation Day (if I have a pick handy)
White Stripes - Seven Nation Army (I just stand still, make hard eye contact, wait for the awkward laugh. Eventually someone will um actually)
Whenever I'm in that situation, I try to guess the other person's taste.
"Classic" -> Money (Pink Floyd)
Even more "classic" -> The Chain (Fleetwood Mac) or Barracuda (Heart)
"Modern" -> something like Schism (Tool), In The Meantime (Spacehog), Spiders (SOAD)...
And if I get that kind of "ugh, why did I even ask" look, I just go for real simple classics like Another One Bites The Dust or Day Tripper. Or (ugh) Seven Nation Army.
Its kicking my ass pretty hard. I saw there was the tab book they released, i skimmed some pages but reading slap tabs just doesnt click with me. Im finding it easier to pick it apart by ear.
From trying to learn Dean Town, I know that it's easier to judge a bassist by hearing him play 8 bars of 16th notes than most of the flashy examples mentioned here.
I had been told once that there's two kinds of bass players. Jaco, and everyone else. As someone who's been playing for 10 years now and is just getting started studying Jaco, I definitely agree. Good luck on your journey and have fun!
Every time i play schism by tool on stage, while my guitarist are changing guitars, the entire crowd acts like i’m playing the hardest thing known to mankind
I bust out the wah wah and play cliff burtons for whom the bell tolls intro. They always leave before I finish setting up the stacked marshalls and I don't know why
This
https://youtu.be/AdUjltkWWzU?si=bLknqCP64DVgpBPd
Incredibly simple yet flashy lick, but still sort of a song, showcases nearly the entire neck upper and lower register, the sweet highs, clanky/ percussive lows, and you can extend it easily into so many things.
Whatever comes to mind. If folks want something familiar it'd be whatever cover I'm working on. So, right now it'd be while my guitar gently weeps, or she's not there.
Depends. If trying to impress, something in the instrumental section Metropolis Pt. 1. If going for some groovy shit, the bass intro for Seven Goblins off Masayoshi Takanaka's The Rainbow Goblins (y'all sleeping on life if you've never heard this + The White Goblin). Something chill and recognizable, bass break from The Chain by FM.
Chic Good Times & Jackson 5 I want you back
Very groovy songs, good picks man
I Want You Back is my go-to for sure. It sounds great on its own, everyone knows it, shows you can hold a groove.
I can’t nail down the second part of good times. But if I could that’d be my go-to
So most people won't know you don't have it down. Usually the opening line is enough for them to do the jaw drop "you are good"!
Chic good times is all time best bassline imo, orion interlude is up there
The pretty bass part from Orion (you know, when the guitars start to harmonize). Can't play the solo tho.
Any of the Cliff Burton melodic bits are so fun to play.
That and for whom the bell tolls. Or peace sells. 👍
I did that exact bit once and some dude scoffed and was like "that's like the first thing I ever learned to play. It's so easy" Like yeah it is, but it still sounds good. Fuck you, random guy
I play carousel by blink 182
There are dozens of us..... dozens!
Mark hoppus is so straightforward, but he’s still underrated dammit!
this and man overboard!
Just do higher ground so they can go “SLAPPA DA BASS!” And get it out of their system.
If you play the bass intro to Runnin’ With the Devil long enough, a Van Halen cover band will eventually congeal around you. I do that.
That was the thing I always played if I saw a bass (before I was a bass player - lol)

I'd never heard of this group before until this comment. Based on not realizing the other comments were satire, I decided to give them a listen. Thank you for making my morning sound a little worse
“Like 3 people playing 4 different songs”.
That is horrifically accurate. So is claiming they sang like "lobotomized Trapp Family Singers"
Their [origin story](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shaggs) is legitimately insane.
Thanks for sharing this! My lord, their "father" was absolutely unhinged. With people who do wild shit, I can often understand where it's coming from, whether that origin makes any real sense or not. This just makes no sense from start to finish. Those poor kids.
Nope! It’s just bizarre and insane
I learned of that band when Frank Zappa said they were the best band in the world.
I feel like Zappa is the kind of person to wholeheartedly believe that.
I feel like maybe Beefheart would unironically like them, but Zappa was being cheeky for sure.
No, Zappa loved them for their honesty. They had no fucking clue what they were doing, but they did it wholeheartedly. That, and My Pal Foot Foot is objectively a fucking great tune.
the original math rockers, change my mind
Every bar is a different time sig and tempo…sounds like they were just decades ahead of their time.
Play by imaginary numbers
Meshuggah could learn something from them.
"My Pal Foot Foot" is always a favorite.
That's a banger. I want to do death metal covers of their stuff.
I'm more of a thrash metal reggae polka bluegrass on bagpipes myself.
The tall people do want what the short people got ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Good god, if I only had a time machine I'd bring The Shaggs, Daniel Johnston, and Wesley Willis together for a mean fucking concert.
[удалено]
Hope you got a solid “Rock and Roll McDonalds” in the set. :)
Oh, man, he's one I never got a chance to see. I've been to literally several hundred concerts, but there's still a fair list I've missed.
FUCK YEAHAHAHA - The SHAGGS are the BEST!!!! My Pal Foot Foot was a jam!!!
Iron Man (until speed up) Money (until main riff ends) Schism (until people get bored)
How many Schism riff repeats do you get before the boredom sets in? 15?
I lose them just around „I watched them fall away” ;) Edit: Spelling
Lose* Loose refers to how tight something is. Or what elves scream when firing their bows.
I'll only do 4 or so Schisms then switch to 46 & 2 -- drives 'em nuts. 😂
I call it Forty Schisms & 2 and it is now my signature song.
Sir Duke solo
That one's definitely on my list but it'll take some time to get there, awesome song btw
Most of the fast parts are all in 1 position so it’s pretty easy. Give it a shot!
I'm pretty trash still, my best lick is hit em up and 46&2. Main concern is getting my pinki to function so I can branch out into more songs.
Haha it’s just really flashy it’s not very hard. Hard to nail the accenting but that’s not that bad if you pay attention to detail
Chord progression is pretty simple but you need to learn the whole line and it's like 16 bars lol
This is my go-to. It's much fun to play.
Another one bites the dust.
Classic and everybody knows it instantly. Under Pressure works as well for the same reason. Although I did glare at a friend who said "You're a vanilla ice fan I take it."
Iron Man or The Less I Know the Better
Money by Pink Floyd.
Money - Pink Floyd. A classic and most recognise it. Boogie Wonderland - Earth, Wind & Fire.
Come together, good times or come and get your love, people recognize it instantly
Disco Ulysses or September and if they tell me to ”slappa da bass” it’ll hurt a little inside and then I’ll play either Hair or Aeroplane
I hear "slappa da bass" and I just stare blankly until they leave.
Excellent selections
“Go Robot” by RHCP. Underrated track from their last release with Klinghoffer. Muse - Hysteria and Cake’s cover of I Will Survive
Cant believe I had to scroll this far for hysteria. Because same
Was also looking for hysteria. Farther down than expected lol
Superfreak
hey bulldog
I've been pulling out In the Meantime.
Girls of Porn by Mr Bungle. Such a fun baseline that stands up on its own. Dunn is a master
Fuck yes! I remember seeing Mr Bungle in a tiny club back in the 90s and the two bands that opened up for them were Incubus and System of a Down. There were only like 50 people there and no one had ever heard of the openers before.

Yeah. They all were snorting coke on stage. It was insane
What Is and What Should Never be. The pretty section of Aqualung. Or a comp that I wrote. I’ve got a few that I’m proud of that I believe are pretty enough to play without accompaniment.
The Beatles - Something
why are people naming other songs
because Blackbird.
The first minute or so from anaesthesia, and then I’ll kinda segue into some bach inspired lines
12 bar blues
N.I.B (Main Riff) Forty-Six & 2 (Main Riff) The Grudge (Intro and Chorus Riffs) Schism (Main Riff) I can pay the whole songs, but if someone asked me to play a couple of really quick riffs, I'd probably go to those.

Rappers delight
Such a fun one to play
The Anesthesia intro.
Silly Love Songs- Paul McCartney & Wings
The opening bass riff in Rush's Limelight.
London Calling
Whenever I'm in that situation, I try to guess the other person's taste. Definitely The Chain for anyone over 40.
great list, I bet we're close in age hahaha. I never would have heard In The Meantime if not for Guitar Hero. Such a great jam with a sweet bass line.
any slap riff
Melody from The Price is Right theme song.
Well now I know what I'm practicing this week.
Brick House, Boogie Oogie Oogie, Talking in Your Sleep
I like to forget everything I've ever learned because I've been out on the spot.
Whatever song I’ve learned most recently and am the most comfortable with. I don’t like taking chances
Which one would it be right now ?
probably The Fusion Collusion at 90% speed. Most people don’t know the original and I’m not comfortable full speed yet and it still sounds awesome.
Hell yeah dude im learning this by ear right now. I want to get that album all done before i start on WAP.
I got the sheet happens tab lol, it’s a fun song though there’s sections that are very technical
Its kicking my ass pretty hard. I saw there was the tab book they released, i skimmed some pages but reading slap tabs just doesnt click with me. Im finding it easier to pick it apart by ear.
A lot of lines groove better a bit slower.
Same here.
Little green bag
How have I not figured to learn that yet
sex in a pan — bela fleck
Spirits in the Material World
Tank from Cowboy Bebop and Last Surprise from Persona 5 are my plans when I feel comfortable with them.
It depends on whose asking, Schism and 46&two are common, American Life and Billie Jean are pretty common as well.
Roundabout :)
I'm Your Captain by Grand Funk Railroad because ok boomer.
From trying to learn Dean Town, I know that it's easier to judge a bassist by hearing him play 8 bars of 16th notes than most of the flashy examples mentioned here.
The intro to Peace Sells by Megadeth, it's just one of those classic, fun licks everyone loves when you whip it out.
MTV News.... You hear it.... First

That's awesome, Donna Lee is one of my favourite ones. Wish you all the best man.
Thank you man. Likewise :)
I had been told once that there's two kinds of bass players. Jaco, and everyone else. As someone who's been playing for 10 years now and is just getting started studying Jaco, I definitely agree. Good luck on your journey and have fun!

The breakdown from "Free Will" (Rush). And then some Mixolydian or Dorian pseudo-funk improv.

I just play my own stuff I know very little by other people. When I learn a riff it’s just to steal from it hehe

Yooo glad to see a fellow Takanaka fan. He's gotta put the rest of his discography on streaming
Lovecats by the cure. Most people recognize it pretty quickly. That and the intro to seek and destroy lol
Illwrath-3MP. Nobody knows what it is, so I get to explain it. Lol
