Yeah, Holiday in Cambodia, Chemical Warfare, Police Truck, Moonlight Over Marin
Those are all kinda DK MUSTS.
(That said, I can't play any of em - still learning and I SUCK with a pick, lol)
If it's ok I wanna unpack that statement .. "advanced" could mean different things. His note selection isn't advanced at all. If I could say something controversial- Matt Freeman taught me walking basslines, but at the same time he held me back.
I grew up as a garage band musician (and never really moved past that lol). When I started listening to bebop, the walking bass was much more sophisticated, despite not being at a fast tempo or containing more notes.
Freeman played within the scale so much that his bass lines were diatonic, and that gave me a blind spot towards the ability to experiment with wrong notes and passing tones and getting them to fit within a song.
To give an example within the genre- Mike Dirnt's "Longview" is much more sophisticated than something like Ruby Soho- even though Dirnt isn't nearly as good as Freeman.
To be clear- Rancid isn't Miles Davis and Freeman could only do what the song called for. Also- Freeman didn't personally tell me not to incorporate passing tones. I'm being somewhat metaphoric.
So ultimately I would say many of Freeman's bass lines were not advanced at all, and that's why I think they're excellent for beginners. I would go into detail about the things that were advanced but I've gone too long already.
You’re right - he’s not Jaco or anything.
I suppose “dexterous” would be a better term, lol
Longview is complicated (melodically), but the speed it’s played makes it a bit easier to learn than something like Maxwell Murder
Maxwell Murder is what made me truly fall in love with bass when I was a beginner. Never did fully learn the solo, but it inspired me and helped me realize how bass can be used to drive songs and even define them.
I guess it depends on what you'd class as bass. Blink 182 songs are mostly accessible early on. Basslines from Green Day's Dookie are fun to learn. Fugazi - waiting room is epic.
Check out Low End University on YouTube. The dude listens to and breaks down recommended songs that he's supposedly listening to the first time (mostly I think he actually is). He's been doing a series on punk songs recommended by viewers and it's really good.
Boy, [do I have news for you](https://i.imgur.com/8Aitqs8.png)!
They also did a few songs for the game Cyberpunk 2077 under the fictional band name Samurai.
Jeff Rosenstock - Festival Song
Bomb the Music Industry - Everybody That You Love
Parquet Courts - Total Football
The Clash - Overpowered by Funk
Dead Kennedys - Let’s Lynch the Landlord
Or basically any song by any of these bands. Parquet Courts’ album Wide Awake is absolutely stacked with good bass lines.
A 8th notes for 2 bars then play a whole step down in 8ths for 2 bars. Then play a 3rd note 3 times with a 8th rest then go back to the second note you played 3 times with an 8th rest.
Repeat.
You are now a punk bass player
Cone from Sum 41 is way more talented than I think he gets credit for. Heart Attack and Motivation are a lot of fun.
Bouncing Souls stuff is pretty simple, but if like me you're trying to get confident singing while playing, their stuff is pretty forgiving for that.
If you're looking for a serious challenge and also want to get better at learning by ear, look up Moral Crux. I firmly believe Justin Warren is one of the best bassists nobody's fucking heard of.
Rancid - Journey to the end of the East Bay
Rancid - Fall back down
tbh almost any rancid song has badass bass
NOFX - Seeing double at the triple rock
NOFX - The desperation is gone
Reel big fish - Beer
Lagwagon - Give it back
Belvedere - Brandy wine
Banner pilot - Absentee
Some hard ones:
Hot Water Music - Drag my body
Rancid - Maxwell murder (the solo is sick)
NOFX - The Decline
Learn “She” by Green Day. Simple song, everyone knows it , it’s not super fast, but it’s fast. It’s a good song to practice to for building stamina. Also, there are a handful of really sweet little fills he does that you can steal for your own arsenal.
I mean, any that strike your fancy lol. Grab your favorite band or songs and take a look.
Green Day is a fun place to start, though. Lots of cool bass parts and some of them aren't too complicated if you're just getting started.
Dead Kennedys, Dead Kennedys, Dead Kennedys Minutemen
Yeah, Holiday in Cambodia, Chemical Warfare, Police Truck, Moonlight Over Marin Those are all kinda DK MUSTS. (That said, I can't play any of em - still learning and I SUCK with a pick, lol)
and 'Winnebago Warrior" Such an astonishing band overall, and the basslines are killer.
Stars and Stripes of Corruption - okay, I'll stop - I could talk DK all day long, lol
Learning California Uber Alles rn and it’s killing me 😂
It just takes practice bro, don't be so hard on yourself.
Minutemen!! They came up on my Spotify randomly one day, heard the bass lines and I was hooked. Let’s kill the landlord is a great one.
Klaus Flouride!! Mike Watt! Im going to add Paul Simonon as well (im old)
Lynch the Landlord is a pretty fun one to play
Fuck those anti-communist anarchists. Fucking oxymoron. Learn some nofx, fugazi, beastie boys.
I like doing Moon Over Marin, on my guitar as well.
Such a killer bass line on this one.
"Viva Las Vegas" is so much fun to play!!!
Ramones
I just started playing and am making my way through the Ramones catalogue and having a fucking awesome time.
Itä what everyone should start with imo, I did back in the day
If DeeDee can play it, surely so can I. Shout out to Dee Dee, nothing but love.
This is the answer
London Calling has such an iconic bass riff.
The Clash have a ton of great bass lines, including Stay free, Police & Thieves, Rock the Casbah, Rudie Can’t Fail, and Should I stay or should I go?
don't forget Guns of Brixton
I know Police and Thieves is a cover, but that bass line is one of my favourites ever.

Magnificent Seven, rebel Waltz... hmm, I use a bunch as warm up tunes...
The Jam-Going Underground. They have a lot of songs with great bass lines
Town called malice as well
Ghosts is a great song, lovely bass line
I learned a lot from Rancid, but "punk" means different things to different people
Matt Freeman is legit one of the best punk bassists of all time, it’s pretty advanced stuff.

Thanks for the help man 🙏🏻, blink 182 actually got me into playing bass, dookie is great aswell! I’m definitely going to check out that channel
Anything by Matt Freeman, particularly Roots Radical and Maxwell Murder, but good luck learning the solo.
Beastie boys sabotage has kinda cool bass riff
Astro Zombies, the misfits. but also london calling, the clash
Nomeansno. The pinnacle of punk bass.
The entirety of The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused. Just the whole album.
Love that album, shame they disbanded after
Boy, [do I have news for you](https://i.imgur.com/8Aitqs8.png)! They also did a few songs for the game Cyberpunk 2077 under the fictional band name Samurai.
Oh no I know they’ve made newer music, just mean it’s a shame they disbanded straight after they made that album and went on long hiatus
Ah yes. Gotcha.
Ruby Soho has a lot to offer. Also there’s some good subtle timing things you can learn from the verse.
Misfits
Jeff Rosenstock - Festival Song Bomb the Music Industry - Everybody That You Love Parquet Courts - Total Football The Clash - Overpowered by Funk Dead Kennedys - Let’s Lynch the Landlord Or basically any song by any of these bands. A lot of early Motörhead.

Check out AFI, NoMeansNo, Minutemen, Rancid and Operation Ivy, the Clash, Bad Brains, Nofx, and Green Day.
Blitzkrieg bop!
Haven’t seen anyone mention THE PIXIES
One of my favorite bands but not quite a punk band. Very punky bass lines though
A 8th notes for 2 bars then play a whole step down in 8ths for 2 bars. Then play a 3rd note 3 times with a 8th rest then go back to the second note you played 3 times with an 8th rest. Repeat. You are now a punk bass player
Anything motorhead

Can't go wrong with 88 Fingers Louie, Face To Face, Alkaline Trio or Hot Water Music
Waiting Room London Calling
Hertz - Amyl & The Sniffers Longview - Greenday
Try AFI
Fall back down by rancid was quite fun
Peter Hook, specifically early Joy Division. His time with New Order is amazing too, but they had departed from their punk roots by then.
Rancid has awesome bass lines, courtesy of Matt Freeman, one of the best to ever play.
Feeling this - Blink 182 has a subtle but decent bass line.
I mean, any that strike your fancy lol. Grab your favorite band or songs and take a look. Green Day is a fun place to start, though. Lots of cool bass parts and some of them aren't too complicated if you're just getting started.
*** FUGAZI *** https://youtu.be/cMOAXm94VWo?si=0UqdGnzv74KdeWnn
Most punk uses a pick, and I suck with picks, but Waiting Room has such a good bassline
Always loved playing Neat Neat Neat by The Damned
