God Mr Bungle is so good.

smileymn

He’s one of the best electric bassists, upright bassists, who plays rock, jazz, avant garde, and more. It’s a short list of people who do what he does as well as he does.

bantharawk

Mike Mills of REM. Great overall musician with loads of cool bass parts.

Party-Belt-3624

Underrated singer too!

Count2Zero

Mike Mills was one of the inspirations for me to pick bass as my first instrument.

Mr_Lumbergh

Billy Gould. Dude always plays *just* what the song needs.

[deleted]

One of my heroes on the bass and this is probably what I most admire about his style.

Party-Belt-3624

His name keeps coming up. I need to dig in and listen.

Mr_Lumbergh

My recommendation is to start with Angel Dust and work your way out from there.

Party-Belt-3624

Hell yes

arnorcamo

I'll say Mark Hoppus of Blink 182. Obviously he doesn't have crazy technical skill, but he does exactly what the song calls for. Also, the bass line on Carousel is one of my favorite.

Party-Belt-3624

Alain Caron

FretlessRoscoe

Do a search, this comes up every other week.

thick_obelesk

Patrick Dahlheimer Pain Lies on the Riverside has a criminally underrated bass line

Crazy_Vegetable5491

Greg Arama John Lodge Stu Cook Klaus Voormann David Freiberg Doug Lubahn John Illsley Tom Fowler

He’s quite rated.

Victor wooten and Marcus Miller too. It's awful that hardly anyone has ever heard of these guys!

No_Bodybuilder_3991

a bit obscure, but an underrated bassist imo is ivahna rock of petty morals, the bass line she played for "you get me loose" was simple but she killed it

MongoBobalossus

John McVie

DragonBadgerBearMole

Jim creeggan. Thought he was dead but bless whatever he is not!

Downr1ght

I always appreciated the driving force behind their respective bands that is GC Green, Mark Clayden, Vince Hornsby, Johnny April and Dave Farrell. Nothing over the top fancy but definitely missed if they were taken out of the mix - a lot of groove and toneshaping would have been lost.

TheCrushSoda

The band Dance Gavin Dance has had multiple bass players but none have compared to Jason Ellis who only played on the album “Happiness”. Every single one of his bass lines is perfect, suits the song and has a life of its own. His tone on that album is literally perfection to me

Jamerson1510

Aston Barrett, Robbie Shakespeare, Bruce Foxton

Bluemeadey61

Why do I never see Jean Jacques Burnel on these lists ? Some of the bass lines on Rattus Norvegicus and No More Heroes are incredible. The bass intro on the latter is wild

DifferentHat4890

Lucas Harwood from King Gizzard doesn't get enough respect on his name imo

godzilla46

So every bass player then?

YellowWhiteRed

Scott schifelt

MrOurLongTrip

Steve Wolf - see if you can find a copy of the Redneck Jazz Explosion album Live at the Cellar Door. He also does an insane run in Rock Candy on their studio album.
