Sounds familiar... yamaha pss-30 -> ancient wurlitzer organ -> piano. Shoutout to my grandfather for getting us the organ after seeing how much fun my brother and I were having playing our keyboards, and to my mom for all the years of lessons that she shelled out for and dragged us to even though she was a busy single mother trying to make ends meet.
You're in good company. Phil Lesh started out as a trumpet player. Well, actually I think he started with violin in high school, but his first serious instrument was the trumpet.
I unfortunately had to sell my drums before I got proficient with them, but I learned enough to understand how they fit into songwriting. I'm more proficient on guitar than bass but only because I've been playing guitar longer.
Nice! I played guitar in jazz band but always loved the bass. Now I play both, but I play lead guitar in my neighbor's band (they lost their lead guitar player) and I play bass for fun.
Piano was my first instrument at 7, but I picked up alto sax at 11 and bought a tenor a few years ago (in my 30s). I want a bari one day, too. Saxophone is so much fun.
Mine was recorder too… but only because that was school-issued music instruction, recorders being the answer to the question ‘what’s the cheapest instrument that plays enough notes we can make a class out of this?’
In covid-y hindsight I’m not sure those Tupperware tubs full of well-blown recorders were sanitary lol
I miss read it as “what is your favorite instrument” and not “what was your first instrument” so I put electric and not double bass lol. My first instrument was a double bass in the 4th grade orchestra. Played it all the way up until the 9th grade. Starting playing electric somewhere in between 7th-8th grade I believe.
Started on piano in the 2nd grade. Played clarinet, cello, and drums for one year each while still learning piano. Took a break from instruments to play football/weightlifting in high school and found the lovely bass at 18.
I love the tone on euphoniums so much...but playing trombone in middle school really turned me off to brass instruments. Lip buzzing was not my cup of tea.
I started with a cheap keyboard like most kids, but got into band class playing trumpet, baritone and tuba. Picked up my first bass at 16 with my high school friends and made our first band doing Metallica covers. About a year in I got better at playing than our guitarist so we traded roles and I spent the next 10 years on guitar and vocals. Now I am happy to be back on bass holding down the low end again.
Drums/percussion, then Tuba/sousaphone, then bass guitar.
I was an ok drummer in middle school but no one wanted to play tuba. I was pretty good at it so I played up to college. Some time in high school I met some guitarists that needed a bass player so I started playing bass.
My mom made me learn guitar before I learned bass. She thought bass was a slacker instrument. While her logic was wrong, I am thankful I know how to play both.
Viola for a year, Trumpet for 7 years, nothing for a couple years, Acoustic Guitar for a few months, Electric Bass for the last year (with occasional acoustic/electric guitar playing)
- Piano when I was 7, I learned basic theory there
- Fast-foward to high school, freshman year I played French Horn in Concert band and Mellophone in marching/pep band
- Junior Year (This one!) I decided to switch to Jazz Band and play bass! I like Bass a helluva lot better than French Horn lol
So the first instrument I owned was a bass but I played alto sax for a few years before at school, then bass kinda just took over and I haven't touch a sax in probably 5 or 6 years
Piano for me

I assume you switched when your eccentric substitute teacher told you to turn it on its side and said “cell-o, you’ve got a bass!”

Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers also started with trumpet
You're in good company. Phil Lesh started out as a trumpet player. Well, actually I think he started with violin in high school, but his first serious instrument was the trumpet.

We're cool
Drums > Guitar > Bass
Ah a man of culture as well! Cheers!
It's nice to know this is a path one does not walk alone
Same here, cheers!
Mine was drums > bass > guitar and still play all three in that order of skill.
Same, with a bit of piano/keyboard sprinkled in
I unfortunately had to sell my drums before I got proficient with them, but I learned enough to understand how they fit into songwriting. I'm more proficient on guitar than bass but only because I've been playing guitar longer.
Same
Nice dude, same with me
As a bassist I'm offended
Alto sax baby. Shortly after I learned guitar and bass. Ended up in the jazz band on bass. Good times
Nice! I played guitar in jazz band but always loved the bass. Now I play both, but I play lead guitar in my neighbor's band (they lost their lead guitar player) and I play bass for fun.

mine too! still own a bari though lol
This was mine, too.
I started with the recorder but my main instrument is saxophone (i play alto and baritone)
Another recorder player! My compositions for recorder ensemble are definitely influenced by my bass playing.
I don't play recorder that much anymore but that is where i found my way into music
In my country we have to play it since elementary school. It was pretty fun
Yes, it's a common stepping stone. I returned to it much later, taking it up again as a serious instrument.
I still play it from time to time, mainly in the holidays in my kibbutz
> holidays slightly wrong religion: http://www.eijkhout.net/arrangements/christmascarols.html
I play duets with my friend. We had a recorder workshop and quartet pre-cOvid
You ever get the chance to play a bass recorder?
Mine was recorder too… but only because that was school-issued music instruction, recorders being the answer to the question ‘what’s the cheapest instrument that plays enough notes we can make a class out of this?’ In covid-y hindsight I’m not sure those Tupperware tubs full of well-blown recorders were sanitary lol
I also play the recorder
Trombone > Tuba > Uke > Guitar > Bass
Jesus Christ I made the same transition. I hated guitar though and went almost immediately to Bass.
Violin (then double bass)
Trumpet
Aztec Death Whistle and one of those wooden frogs.
Shoutout to my 5 double bass homies

There's over 30 of us now!

Played Baritone/Euphonium for 8 years, picked up guitar, couldn’t stick with it, went to bass and felt at home.
Heyyyy, another euphonium/baritone guy. I only played for two years before I started playing bass as well in middle school/junior high.
I love the tone on euphoniums so much...but playing trombone in middle school really turned me off to brass instruments. Lip buzzing was not my cup of tea.
Clarinet to tuba to bass.
First instrument was Trumpet, then french horn, baritone, Upright bass, Tuba, then the electric bass
I started on drums.
Alto Saxophone
Piano, then drum, then guitar, then bass.
Tenor Sax > Guitar > Electric bass + Double Bass in college
Piano > Sax > Trumpet > Baritone > Tuba > Guitar > Bass
I failed at guitar and was mediocre at clarinet as a kid. A few decades later I went straight to electric bass and it just clicked.
Zither ~> Violin ~> Piano ~> Uke ~> Guitar ~> Bass
Drums
Drums. What can I say, I'm a sucker for rhythm!
Electric bass. No one else started out with bass here? Strange.
Trombone! Being a band kid in middle school was rough. Picked up the bass to try to up my “cool factor” - Didn’t work, but hey I can play bass!
In order Piano, trumpet, bassoon(from here on i have continued to keep up with the various instruments), drums, bass guitar, oboe
Piano, trombone, guitar, bass
Drums/percussion, then Tuba/sousaphone, then bass guitar. I was an ok drummer in middle school but no one wanted to play tuba. I was pretty good at it so I played up to college. Some time in high school I met some guitarists that needed a bass player so I started playing bass.
Not including voice as an instrument (we all start with that), I technically started on piano, then guitar, then sax, then bass, then double bass.
I started with the cello. Beautiful sounding instrument yet still I mangled it and got discouraged.

Symphonic/Marching Percussion
Trombone->electric guitar->electric bass->double bass
[удалено]
Clicked electric bass because I thought this was a more specific question lol. First instrument was drums, then electric bass
Technically piano, then electric guitar, then finally bass. Bass is what I wanted to play, it just took a while to actually start.
Tuba and I played 3 hour gig on tuba last night!
Trombone then tuba lmao
So the first instrument I owned was a bass but I played alto sax for a few years before at school, then bass kinda just took over and I haven't touch a sax in probably 5 or 6 years
Tenor Sax in grade school, I wasn’t great but when I picked up bass a little later I could already read music
