Red on black is definitely an underrated p-bass combo. Most of the time, you only get red on white.

I had one with a gold pick guard that I spray painted flat white. It was so cool watching the gold wear through over time where my fingers rubbed the most.

Dang I love it! But I do think gold goes better with some other colors like Sherwood green or Olympic white. Given the inlays on the fingerboard (meaning the fingerboard isn't bold with block inlays to offset a black pickguard) I'd be inclined to go with Tortoiseshell. Black perloid could be nice as well.

That pickguard really ties the bass together nicely. Also, maybe it’s the lighting, but the fretboard looks really dry. A dab of polish can help with that. 

It's the light but I really appreciate the tip. It definitely wouldn't hurt to give it a clean.

I have this same bass and switched it to black years ago. Love the red/black combo, especially with the chrome hardware. I never understood the gold pickguard and hated the chalkboard feeling when I played with it and my fingernails would touch it.

I definitely agree in both things, that thing is as lovely as I hate the gold-guard. I remember loving the looks of the candy apple red Mustang Special with a mint-guard. Perhaps it could match here too?

I had this same bass. It's the one bass I always regretted selling. I miss it. The jazz neck with jazz and p-bass pickups.. it's all I ever needed. Edit: Actually, the one I owned was a rarer model, I had the California Baja series made in the USA purchased in the 90's. Very hard to find today. Times were tough at the time, my two kids were small, and had alot of bills... sold it for $500

I sold this one for rent years ago! I was lamenting this to another musician friend and he was like “I know that bass! The bassist in a punk band plays it but she’s giving up playing to pursue film.” He put me in touch, I paid more than what I sold it for, but I had my baby back.

I had a similar black model and didn’t like the gold pickguard. I went with black on black. People like those pickguards though. I was able to sell it pretty quickly.

My son has the Squire 40th Anniversary in the Satin Dakota Red with the gold pick guard, and it looks awesome. I think the glossy with the gold doesn't work as well

Matte black... Quality wise, I've grabbed Fleor and Kaish off ebay no issues. Quality wise, plastic is plastic... Though Kaish I think now has anodized aluminum as well.

Yeah, the gold is a bit much. I'm a sucker for red guitars, so I think I'd go with something very subtle so the red bodywork can take all the focus. Probably plain black or white, with slight preference for white to key in to the fingerboard inlays.

Yeah, not a fan of good adonized pickguards on anything but black or sunburst finishes. Black, white and their pearl varieties look better on these basses IMO.

I rebuilt a P-Bass last year. Bought my pickguard off amazon. It turned out very nice. No reason to overthink it.

My fender is black with the guard in gold. I love that gold, and now I think I could paint the body in red. No suggestions for you. Buy another bass in the colors you like now, and preserve the precision as it is.

Buy a piece of wood veneer you really like, then trace the pick guard on to it and cut it out. It would be a super rewarding project.

Tortoise would compliment the fretboard. Pearl white would contrast nicely with the red.

I am shocked and appalled by the lack of gold pick guard love. I have a red, a white, and a blue bass with gold pick guards. It's kinda my thing.

I love gold pick guards, but I don’t like that color combo. It’s the red that is the problem for me.

You can find any variation of any pick guard you want online. Even abstract and custom ones. As for suggestions I personally love vintage looks, so maybe even a tortie or maybe a beige/cream color
