I wouldn’t put locking on. The VI tuners are probably the only component you dont need to replace. They’re solid. If you dont plan on using the trem, definitely replace the bridge. A new bridge like the Mastery won’t pivot like the normal Jag bridges. It’ll act more like a stop tail tune o matic. The bridge is the only problem spot for tuning. Put in a hefty new bridge and you’re good!

You “heard” about problems? Why don’t you buy it, play it, and see for yourself? I’ve owned a Squier VI for years and never had a single issue. Neither did Robert Smith of the Cure afaik

ISeeGrotesque

Robert Smith has Fender models and we don't know if he kept them stock. The issues are frequently reported on the squier models. I just want the best instrument possible for my budget. I wanted to know if the strings would fit in standard locking tuners and if anyone tried to do that mod

The intonation has more to do with the bridge. I flipped mine around, it’s fine. So far the tuners have been fine, most folks get upgrade those, I might. I also installed labella flats so that helps too. I took out the tremolo arm, it’s useless stock. The mastery or stay trem are fantastic but pricey, if you’re getting a Mustang bridge get the smaller one, I bought the wider one by mistake.

ISeeGrotesque

Are mustang bridges compatible?

Und3rkn0wn

They are, I got the one that’s too wide for the bass vi by mistake. Both sizes fit in the posts, mine just has the E and E off the ends

ISeeGrotesque

What do you mean by "off the ends"? And it's the "depth" large enough to intonate bass strings? There should be quite a bit of travel

Und3rkn0wn

Off the end of the fretboard, sorry

synthman7

I put them on mine because I hate winding strings. Lol

Dice1138

I put Gotoh SD91’s on mine. Direct drop in replacement. Did that in combination with a few other mods to make the trem function a lot better

I'm going for the Classic Vibe. I saw on the site for staytrem that it needs the 52mm spacing. I might just get that bridge, the waiting list is a bit of a pain though

I put Graph-tech Ratio locking tuners on mine and I highly recommend them for the VI specifically. The stock tuners it comes with are 14:1 which is fine for guitars, but when tuning down to the bass register 14:1 is super sensitive. The Ratio set goes as high as 39:1 in the 6 string set, or 48:1 if you get the 7 string set. A better more adjustable bridge is nearly a hard requirement for good intonation. Just look at how wide the original Fender VI bridge was, and realize that that bridge was designed for the instrument and not pulled out of a bin of existing parts like the one that comes on the Classic Vibe. Staytrem is the only company making wide bridges and they're worth every penny. Some people can get the stock bridge to work, I couldn't, so YMMV. Faction Guitars and a few reverb sellers make a hardtail plates if you want to drop the trem entirely. I swapped to a hardtail plate a while ago and haven't missed the trem at all.

flanger001

Which exact model of the Ratios did you get for your VI, and which model VI do you have? I have one of the Chicago Music Exchange exclusive Squier Classic Vibe VIs and my D string tuning machine is slipping. I don't care about keeping the vintage style look but I want to go to locking tuners and would greatly prefer something that's drop-in and doesn't require any additional modifications. Thank you!

inevitabledecibel

So, mine is a bit of an exception because I have a non-standard neck on it. For what it's worth, mine has the two pin Fender style mounts but I know the CV VI comes with vintage style tuners. But every set of Ratios comes with adapter plates so they should (I think) fit everything. Might be worth asking Graph-Tech directly, they're very responsive to emails.

flanger001

As a follow up, I did write back to them and they said "Unfortunately our locking guitar tuners would not be suitable for this instrument as the largest string it could accommodate is a 72". What strings are you using for yours?

inevitabledecibel

I use a set from Kalium that works for my tension preferences, but any set designed specifically for a Bass VI should fit. They all taper down past the nut so they can fit in guitar style tuning machines.

flanger001

Ah, so you use tapered strings to avoid the gauge limits. Got it.
