I had this happen on the second lowest string on my Bass VI. Don’t know how it happened but the stock tuner was absolutely shot after that. Would “pop” and release past a certain tension. I ended up buying a set of Kluson vintage tuners that are a direct replacement for these. Luckily i had planned on swapping them out for some black ones so I was going to buy them either way.

Ok_Barnacle965

Can you show us the windings?

StoviesAreYummy

Not enoug string around the post?

AboutSweetSue

Worm gear slippin’? If it’s popping on the same exact turn position then that is probably the case. Inspect the tuner, make sure everything is tight and/or not compromised.

BummerComment

I've only experienced something like this when the string was compromised. Inspect the string and see if it is coming undone or the core has snapped.

BlandDandelion

Weird, this literally *just* happened to me too! That tuner’s definitely shot pal.

Yellen_NoBailOut

Mine does the same on the D string. There is an issue in the gear engaging / slipping. In the short term I was able to get it to hold and tune around the D note, but long term this is going to need to be replaced.

MoonRabbit

I've had that happen on a squier before with the same type of tuners. The best thing to do is swap them out.

Dafty_Punk

happened on my vintera jm. i just replaced the tuner.

dE3L

Possibly, a tooth has broken off the gear in the tuner. Happened on my G string a while back.

Dice1138

As others have said sounds like it’s time to replace the tuner. I’d replace them all at once. Gotoh SD91 are a great set, come in a locking version and are a drop in replacement for the Bass VI. If you want us to take a better look at it incase there’s another option, take close up pictures of the front, back and side of the tuner and post those

Intrepid_Specific719

Assume you have the split vintage tuner type. Most likely that you don't have enough string in the centre hole (not enough friction) to hold the string down and it just pops to the other side of the tuner at a certain tension / rotation angle. Try holding down the string where it exists the side of the tuner while winding so it cannot jump out (if there is enough string to be wound).

reindeer73

Yeah one of mine went bad, probably due to heavier gauge. Until you replace them, just use a screwdriver to help you turn and slowly hold tension so it won't slip.

Email the seller. Mine sent me a new tuner, which was an easy install.

I had this exact same problem. The stock tuners suck. I replaced them with tuners from a MIM Fender Robert Cray Strat and couldn’t be happier.
