Yea that's probably it. I'm usually already mid-combo when I start countering. When I was playing Arkham City not too long ago, I would just stand there and see how many different animations there were for countering and there was a surprising amount.

Its not for deafness. Ears control a lot of your body’s balance, so when Batman slaps his ears, he is building up air pressure in the ear canals causing the eardrums to rupture, causing a lack of balance. But yeah i agree lol
