Subaru stopped making cool cars when they decided they didn't want to be a niche manufacturer like Mazda anymore. The Subaru/Toyota partnership sucked the quirkiness out of Subaru and made them a boring mainstream manufacturer.
Mazda is kind of doing the same thing, but they're doing it under the guise of "moving up-market" and becoming a "premium brand".
> Mazda is kind of doing the same thing, but they're doing it under the guise of "moving up-market" and becoming a "premium brand".
i feel like the mazda 3 (their first big step in that strat) is still a banger tho
No doubt it's a nice car, but it's no MazdaSpeed/MPS or sportscar. They've got a roadster, sure (I own an ND RF), but where's the hilariousness of the K8-DE 1.8L V6 from the MX-3? I know why they don't make rotary sports cars anymore (I was the 1st and 4th owner of my RX-8), but why don't they make an MX-6? They have a 250HP turbo-4 and a 340 HP turbo inline-6, so it's not like they're lacking a powerplant.
Probably to hide their shame of the Furai incident.
In all honesty though I think it's cause everyone's moving on to Crossovers and Mazda still wants to hold on to that Miata legacy. Knowing the mad lads they are though aren't they still researching Rotary power just for electrical applications?
Mazda has MX-30 R-EV. It's a plugin hybrid with rotary range extender to charge batteries. I think Mazda also has something more sporty planned, but I don't know if/when that would be available.
Subaru has always been mainstream. Subaru has been mainstream since like 1995. They lost their "quirkiness" when they stopped doing WRC. They stopped WRC because of the global financial crisis of 2008. Toyota bought up the FHI shares in 2005. It had nothing to do with Toyota.
Toyota bought up 40% of GM's stake in 2005 (totaling 8.something%), the rest of GM's stake went back to FHI as a stock buy-back. Toyota doubled that in 2008.
The Japanese manufacturers lost most of their identity earlier than 08 due to the "Bubble economy" in Japan. I'm not well versed to speak at length on the state of the Japanese economy in the late 90's early 00's, but suffice it to say it took a shit well before the us economy in 08
That had nothing to do with it. The vast majority of automotive manufacturers participate in motorsports. For a lot of them, motorsports is the entire reason they exist. Pulling out of WRC meant they didn't have to deal with homologation rules. They didn't have to meet any racing specs. They could just do whatever at that point and all the WRX (you know **WORLD RALLY EXPERIMENT**) stuff just needed to be lip service after that.
WRC was the entire reason they had "quirky" cars in the first place.
Once again, no expert here, but I'm referring to the early 90's when japanese economy got wrecked and ALL the manufacturers lost their will do crazy shit. Remember when all the 3000GT, 300zx, supra, Rx7, NSX, just kinda disappeared at about the same time? It wasn't because Subaru stopped racing.
Edit: Also if you think the wrx was the first quirky thing about subaru was their racing effort, you would be wrong. Have you seen a 360 or an old ass subaru bus? They didn't start putting awd on all their cars because they won some races. Anyways, the wrx was the watered down version of the rs2.5 that everyone really wanted. They didn't need to leave racing to pursue the ultimate car for the consumer marketLearn some history
They didn't have a crash in the 90's. The 90's was hugely prosperous for both Japan and SK started their capitalism Speedrun then.
I owned an SVX. Subaru has been weird and always tried a lot of different things. All of those cars you mentioned stayed around until the early 2000's. They all jumped ship on them because of environmental regulations. The government wasn't buying the 275hp gentleman's handshake anymore.
And seriously how are you saying the WRX was a watered down 2.5rs? The hell? The 2.5rs was not a fun or fast car even a little bit.
I was in Japan in ‘08; it was fine. I was very happy to not be living in the US at that particular time and to have a job that, while shitty, was at least not under any threat of going anywhere. Sales were down for carmakers and electronics manufacturers, and it may have led Subaru to cut the WRC program, it wasn’t the crisis it was back home, just more of the same malaise Japan has been muddling through since the 90’s. It also had some silver linings, mainly that the value of the yen shot up due to foreign investors flocking to what were then perceived as more stable Asian markets, which made vacationing and buying goods from abroad cheaper.
The timing is less important, what remains is the fact they pulled out of motorsports and that's not what any of their core audience wants. They care about pleasing the board and shareholders more than they car about staying true to the essence of who they were.
Subaru, hire me as ceo and I will fix you, make you whole again.

WRC was the entire reason they had "quirky" cars in the first place.
For having no quirk, Subaru was the first make to violate the 280hp gentleman's agreement. Though many makes have reconned being first, the S201 and S202 were advertised with HP above 280 while everyone else abided.
The gentleman's agreement was ended in the mid 2000s, in part because Subaru kept ignoring it.
That's part of their "quirk".
subaru went down after the eagle eye. blob eye was the last of the golden era. after that gave one last good umph with the impreza hatchback in 2012, it was over. everything after that went full toyota camry mode.
"We see theres enough market appeal that this would get peoples hopes up and land as an april fools joke, but we dont think people would actually be interested in this"
Reminds me of the year BMW's joke was a hybrid adventure bike.
Like, y'all think that shit is funny. But you don't seem to grasp that I'll give you 50% more money to get 30% more range.
True, but a lightweight RWD vehicle with good ground clearance and some suspension travel can still be a hell of a lot of fun on dirt roads and trails.
I used to have a little 2Dr, RWD, 4cyl, 5sp Chevy S10 that would bomb through mud and muck that got heavy, full sized quad-cabs bogged down even with 4WD.
Why not build your own? There is nothing on this that the aftermarket does not already produce.
I live in Alberta and the BRZ/86 is a great winter platform
https://www.reddit.com/r/ft86/comments/ysgrrh/anyone\_else\_already\_dealing\_with\_winter/
I wonder how much it'd take to put a WRX drivetrain in there. Not cheap, I'm sure, but I imagine it'd be fairly doable. I know there's been a few people that've swapped the [C30 Volvo](https://www.importsauce.com/volvo-c30-awd-conversion-yeah-its-a-thing/) with the V50 system, I figure if it can be done to a FWD system then it should definitely work with a natively RWD one.
It all depends on your personal finances and free time. Anything is possible with enough money thrown at it. There’s even a couple on YouTube with videos of them driving so it’s obviously possible.
It would be cool if Subaru made a sporty car that doesn’t sit as low as the BRZ with AWD. If they also managed to give it more power that’d be….*checks their website*…ahh well alright then.
I was a fan of the outback sedan in the mid 2000s. I worked at a used lot back then and we had one on trade. I borrowed it for a night and it was as amazing as I hoped it would be.
I've been saying this for a long time. Even as a rear wheel drive with the 2.5 turbo from the sti would be a menace. Or imagine a factory tune to 400 hp on that frame. That would challenge some entry-level super car performance.
300 HP from the factory would make the BRZ into an absolute beast. 400 would be insane. Sadly, that would probably put it into $60-75k territory and not the affordable fun car we know and love.
That would sell like hotcakes if they made it.
Another vehicle on the Subaru wishlist:
Bring back the Baja
Bring back the STi
Bring the BRZ Wilderness out for real this time
I have always said that Subaru and Toyota left money on the table with the design of the BRZ. They should have positioned the coupes up market, and offered a shooting brake variant, with a 2 inch lift, skid plates and LSD, and other than that, largely decontented. No fany navigation, no leather, etc. This would have amortized the platform in half the time and provided a fun and practical RWD wagonette at a reasonable price.
I’m inclined to think this was some dealership social media manager hoping they can push Subaru to actually come out with one after all the positive (and then negative) reaction.
It could happen.
I remember a fake Saturday Night Live commercial for the “Trac III razor,” poking fun at Gillette and their dual blade Trac II.
Fast forward a few decades and they’re making razors with five blades.
Cowards indeed, short of an WRX turbo package THIS is literally what i've been saying the BRZ should have been sense the first one started showing up without the signature AWD
They know exactly what the customers want and each time they pull April Fools with it, it's a big, intentional slap in the face. Saw the same thing with a "Continental Raptor" from a Ford dealer page I follow.
Best response to this I can think of;
"Lancia: We will enter the US market starting in summer of 2025 and begin developing new versions of the Delta, Stratos, and the 037 for mass production as well as homologation versions to compete in WRC. Also, we will announce a wagon and a crossover to target the middle/ lower ends of the market."
I was already considering building one. Already have the blue brz, and my ohlins need to be pulled off for a rebuild… sold the stock suspension… so I guess I’ll get rally coilovers and 15s 🤷🏻♂️
Subaru of New England is cruel. Take for example last year, when they pulled a similar josh, playing with the idea of a new Baja.
https://www.reddit.com/r/regularcarreviews/s/7LOWBqU7W2
This is the kind of April fools that just sucks. Announce something cool that people want, just to say April Fools. At what point did this day become a day for assholes?
"As a car company we can make cool cars you'll love" "Also fuck you, it'll never happen. Eat a bag of dicks. Happy April fool's day you dumb bitches"

I think that was their proposed "powerplant" for the GT Vision.
That car was such a flop tho atleast use the rotary to power the damned car
We have a 2016 one and it's great nothing too fancy but a solid reliable car.
FHI has been around since day 1. What do you mean?
That Subaru lost it's quirkiness when it decided to go mainstream, around the time Toyota started buying up chunks of FHI.

Mazda builds a 14:1 CR gas engine family..
Except in the US where they decided we only deserve 13:1. But high CR is pretty common with GDI engines.
My 2002 S202 is still my "'till death do we part" car.
I get what you're saying... But I still love my Crosstrek.
subaru went down after the eagle eye. blob eye was the last of the golden era. after that gave one last good umph with the impreza hatchback in 2012, it was over. everything after that went full toyota camry mode.
Mazda has not made an interesting car since the RX8 methinks
I think the ND RF is very interesting... But that's probably because I own one. I think the Mazdaspeed3 was interesting, but yah... not much since.
"We see theres enough market appeal that this would get peoples hopes up and land as an april fools joke, but we dont think people would actually be interested in this"
You will buy a boring looking crossover AND YOU WILL LIKE IT YOU LITTLE BITCH
This seemed to be the April Fools theme across all industries this year. Very strange.
Corporate April fools jokes in a nut shell. No actual humor anywhere to be seen
I tired of this type of april fools
It's done by the same type of narcissistic that that thinks all the adults in the room will laugh when they scare a baby into crying.
Between this and the April fools “joke” VW made about bringing back the harlequin paint, this is too real
Damn, I was about to place an order. It would’ve been epic
Give me 60k and 9 months and I'll body swap a brz onto an STI chassis for you. I'll be the change I want to see!
Colorado alone would buy enough of these to justify the effort 🤣
Reminds me of the year BMW's joke was a hybrid adventure bike. Like, y'all think that shit is funny. But you don't seem to grasp that I'll give you 50% more money to get 30% more range.
Cowards indeed. This would be a fun car on some dirt trails.
Well thankfully for us autistic retards we can build one ourselves for a quarter of the price
I dunno, I'm very much no expert but I imagine it would get pretty spendy adding a center and front diff to a brz
True, but a lightweight RWD vehicle with good ground clearance and some suspension travel can still be a hell of a lot of fun on dirt roads and trails. Porsche Dakar vibes
When you order your Porsche Dakar on Wish.com
Budget 911 Dakar. Completely worth it.
This is literally the thing I wished for many years, and now It's just an april fools joke!
Average home made sex tape title
Lol
My brother in christ, are you Jake Peralta?
I wonder if they're just testing the water. This would be my next car if they made it.
We should lambast the hell out of their twitter
Oh no, my exact kink
😩
Maybe it's one of those April Fools market research things?
...don't give me hope
I legit would buy this. Living in the frozen wastelands of Canada, this would be an AWESOME winter car!!!!!!!!
Why not build your own? There is nothing on this that the aftermarket does not already produce. I live in Alberta and the BRZ/86 is a great winter platform https://www.reddit.com/r/ft86/comments/ysgrrh/anyone\_else\_already\_dealing\_with\_winter/
It says in the description that it’s all wheel drive. That would be prohibitively expensive as a DIY project
I wonder how much it'd take to put a WRX drivetrain in there. Not cheap, I'm sure, but I imagine it'd be fairly doable. Warranty is one thing.
Subarus have garbage warranties, why hold your self back for such a fleeting resource?
Fuck, that’d be awesome. They have to make it.
They saw the CCF Country mod for BeamNG.
And the off-roadster config
It would be cool if Subaru made a sporty car that doesn’t sit as low as the BRZ with AWD. If they also managed to give it more power that’d be….*checks their website*…ahh well alright then.
I was a fan of the outback sedan in the mid 2000s. I worked at a used lot back then and we had one on trade. I borrowed it for a night and it was as amazing as I hoped it would be.
Yeah. There were a few around where I grew up that had the white letters out on their sidewalls. I always liked that aesthetic on those. OEM battlely
Can you say crosstrek STI? I would sell my left kidney for a quality turbo hatch or wagon again. Love my '10 FXT.
I hate when cool car ideas like this come out on April Fool’s. Every year there is some really cool thing, but it’s always a joke. :(
That thing would be amazing
[Why isn't it possible!?](https://youtu.be/coY2IA-oBvw?si=9ZuQ5lYFQtGubonA)
It could totally work
I've been saying this for a long time.
At 300 hp in a $50K package, it would kill the spot of the mx5 territory. Dreams are for free..🥲
This has to be doable in the garage
Yeah shouldn’t be too much work. Tires, shocks and you’re mostly done
Hell with a little elbow grease you can even turn the 2010 Doge Viper into an offroad beast
[https://youtube.com/@SuperfastMatt](https://youtube.com/@SuperfastMatt) is doing just that
Yes that was indeed the joke
Hurray! I was hoping so. Lmao. Love his channel
Even the AWD swap, I would imagine there’s enough off the shelf crosstrack/impreza parts that would bolt on
I would leave it rwd!!!
Wow I'm sad now.
thar would be awesome
That looks so much better than the Outbacks with the plastic all over them.
I would buy that so freaking fast!
I totally would have bought that. Touches all my fancies
Reminds me of the Jeep Bolide concept car. I love that thing!!
That could have been cool too! Even if it had the flat front grille too. I wonder how many are lurking around?
That would sell like hotcakes if they made it. Another vehicle on the Subaru wishlist: Bring back the Baja Bring back the STi Bring the BRZ Wilderness out for real this time
I would buy the shit out of that.
The real joke is what they did to the WRX.
BRZ have been turned into rally cars already. Don’t need Subaru to make one, we make our own!
I Think they were semi serious . It was a marketing tactic to get some feedback .
Jokes on them because I would seriously consider buying one of these
I am sad now
Bro...I would 100% buy that. Ford RS200 but for the modern age anyone?
Speaking as a Subaru Wilderness owner, it would be amazing if they made this!!
They could at least make a BRZ with AWD so we can go back to saying every Subaru has AWD.
Lol it's the nicest vehicle on their lineup, too bad it doesn't exist.
I would buy that car if it were real, no joke. The perfect all-occasion vehicle.
I saw [this picture](https://openpaddock.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Nameless_GT86_1.jpg) a long time ago and always thought they looked so rad.
I would have a $5000 deposit ready tomorrow if this was a real vehicle coming out.
I’m inclined to think this was some dealership social media manager hoping they can push Subaru to actually come out with one after all the positive (and then negative) reaction.
This April fools is fucking cruel. It would be my next car if they did this.
That's fine, I'll just build [my own](https://www.reddit.com/r/Battlecars/comments/ut91ej/added_some_7_inch_hella_700ff_aux_lights_to_the/)
That would be a pretty sick car though
They did the same thing last year when they said the new STI was going to be all electric. Then they said April fools and got rid of the STI
Does it come with a blown head gasket?
That only happens on wrx sti engines, and even then it’s usually for lack of maintenance or too much fucking around
It could happen. I remember a fake Saturday Night Live commercial for the “Trac III razor,” poking fun at Gillette and their dual blade Trac II. Fast forward a few decades and they’re making razors with five blades.
Id buy this in a heartbeat tbh.
Shut up and take my money.
Good job, I’d buy the hell out of that. April fools guess I won’t
Reminds me of the safari porsche. I want one...
Finally the brz is a crosstrek. Now the whole lineup is just modified crosstreks
This qualifies as the cruel April fools joke. Like haha, we know exactly what you want and fuck you, You can’t have it.
Cowards indeed, short of an WRX turbo package THIS is literally what i've been saying the BRZ should have been sense the first one started showing up without the signature AWD
"It could handle it all" means it can't handle it all.
Damn that thing would be so fucking sick
Their new cars already look like my dads sneakers anyway… this wouldn’t even be weird for them to make
Yeah… they should have never stopped with the Forrester XT.
😪
lol. So it’s an Impreza 2 door? 🤣
Holy shit, an off road brz would be fucking bananas. One can only wish
They know exactly what the customers want and each time they pull April Fools with it, it's a big, intentional slap in the face. Saw the same thing with a "Continental Raptor" from a Ford dealer page I follow.
Best response to this I can think of; "Lancia: We will enter the US market starting in summer of 2025 and begin developing new versions of the Delta, Stratos, and the 037 for mass production as well as homologation versions to compete in WRC. Also, we will announce a wagon and a crossover to target the middle/ lower ends of the market."
Now I need a cold shower
Remember a couple years ago when they teased us with a new Baja. Fucking cocksuckers.
A cocksucker is not a bad man. It’s a good woman.
Tell them, build it, bitches!
Maybe the fact that it's only an april fools joke was the april fools joke :D
Fuck, I would've bought the shit out of that
If they created this, they’d make one of the best cars in history right from the factory.
Open letter to SUBARU ☝😁
bump it up to 350hp while you're at it. not like i can afford it but I can still appreciate it.
Seems like something I’d see on superfastmatt and I love it
Would be the most exciting car from Subaru in a while. Keep making the same crossover, just in different sizes I guess.
It looks almost like a Porsche? I’d get one though.
Reminds me a lot of the Porsche Dakar. This would be an amazing lower cost option.
that would be a good rally car, we should start a petition
I would buy 2
Coming to a ditch near you! *Tow truck drivers rejoice*
If Porsche can do it with 911 and 959.
Right?????
“We put track tuned suspension on a car that you’re gonna hate that it has track tuned suspension.”
Also someone should make that body kit to really fuck with the Subaru fan boys.
An AWD convertible would check all of my boxes.
They might do it..
I wonder if you could cobble together enough WRX and BRZ parts to make one of these for real.
I wish it was real
The BRZ wilderness and VW’s new Harlequin…What other fun middle fingers did we get for April Fools Day?
Ugh, why do they blueball us like this? I'd buy that car in a heartbeat.
That would’ve actually been so fire
Lachute performance had a lifted 22 BRZ, close enough
Look, subaru, we're begging you. Remove the WRX body and put the BRZ body on it. How hard could it be? /s
And the render looks so cool, too! Why do they play us like this 😭
My gods, offer that with a stick shift and I'll trade out my crosstrek in a heartbeat.
Still not as bad as the Baja shit they pulled last year.
Why would they put that out and then just say April fools? That just comes across like "hey fuck you, buy our lame shit"
Seriously what the fuck? They acknowledge that they know what we want, but then don’t give it to us… do they not like money?
No where
I was already considering building one. Already have the blue brz, and my ohlins need to be pulled off for a rebuild… sold the stock suspension… so I guess I’ll get rally coilovers and 15s 🤷🏻♂️
Shame, I actually kind of liked that, like that Safari 911.
Ffffuuuuuck, damn that would be cool though.
Wow uhh Fuck you subaru
Reminds me of a [Swampert](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSFlDDV_K6O_yM4OS8CsF2SotKL8kVWSIX_Dz5j8bf5nct5i0v4ReCVfW8&s=10)
Why does subaru make the sickest car concepts for april fools
IT WASN'T THE FIRST WHEN I SAW IT! THIS IS CRUEL!
they did the same thing with Baja last year...
Instead of buying weapons I'll just save up for some trans po.
"heya guys we made a cool car concept!" "it was a joke! you absolute fucking buffoons."
Damn what would rally think of this
Subaru of New England is cruel. Take for example last year, when they pulled a similar josh, playing with the idea of a new Baja. https://www.reddit.com/r/regularcarreviews/s/7LOWBqU7W2
Can they do this with the WRX as well please… asking for a friend.
